So what is on/around line 233 in /etc/dovecot.conf?  It seems like 
that's where I would try to look.

Also, to answer your initial question, you could probably use Maildir 
instead of mbox if you want a painless way to support subfolders.  It's 
not that mbox can't do it, it's just a little more picky about it.
