Oh, I just realized the problem. You're relying on autodetection for
mail location. The problem goes away if you set it explicitly:

mail_location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u

(or without INBOX, depending on where it really is)

I'll of course fix the bug anyway.
