[Dovecot] older gcc don't know --as-needed

Hi,

I have to build dovecot-2.1.10 for SuSE SLES9.

gcc version is 3.3.3

Is there a special option to disable ithe ld option or do I have to apply a special patch?
Are there other suggestions?
