Please edit /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-logging.conf and enable:
auth_verbose = yes
auth_verbose_passwords = plain
auth_debug = yes
auth_debug_passwords = yes
mail_debug = yes

Then you'll get a very detailed account in the logfiles about what's
going on.
