The alias works fine. It's just an auth request. I'll live with it.

Unless your userid is also zero, my guess is that Exim isn't using the alias. This message
(to me) says "I can't deliver to 'root' because that userid is zero".
On Postfix, you have to run 'newaliases' after changing /etc/aliases.
