Hierarchy separator recommendation?

Why is '.' default (at least in .deb packages) if it is worse then '/' ?

Doesn't it, in the end, all come to translation from IMAP names 
(user,folder) to OS filesystem names within dovecot (at some benchmark 
tests expense) ? :-)
