Thanks Stuart & Jan - no_snowball seems to have cleared up the errors.

relevant  config now reads:

plugin {
   fts = lucene
   # Lucene-specific settings, good ones are:
   fts_lucene = whitespace_chars=@. mime_parts no_snowball
}
