Agreed, I could (and should) have provided more information on the imp 
environment.

- php 4.3.1
- linux  kernel 2.4.20
- IMAP c-Client version 2001

The IMP hasn't changed. Just the imapd (dovecot) has been updated (and 
downgraded)
