I've no idea about 0.99, but in the earlier 1.0tests Dovecot assumed 
certaint things about root's group membership (i.e. root's primary group 
was gid 0) and Solaris (which had gid=1 for root) elicited this error 
message.  Perhaps your system has something similar....  or try the 
later 0.99 as Timo suggested.
