I should have thought of that, I had the same problem with proftp.
I ass/u/me you call stat on the socket. SCO admits there's a bug here
however they claim that fstat work in that case.
I leave your account open for a while if you need unixware machine to
test.

Bear in mind that unixware needs sys/types.h and mkdev.h in compat.h
