I have virtual_transport = dovecot

I have that now (didn't when I initially set up the server assuming it
was a default, but later added it)

Mine is a bit different:

dovecot   unix	-	n	n	-	-	pipe
  flags=DRhu user=vmail:vmail argv=/usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -f
${sender} -d ${user}@${nexthop}

I'm still not sure what "nexthop" means but it seems to make it work.
