Try this:

[root at ketola .INBOX]# pwd
/vmail/sami at ketola.io/index/.INBOX
[root at ketola .INBOX]# doveadm dump . | grep -c hdr.message-id
11007

This is Maildir, but it should work the same way with mdbox.
