My sieve scripts don't get executed and when I enable debug logging I get following errors in the log:

It has nothing to do with your sieve scripts not being executed though. You can ignore it, it's a debut message.
Sieve scripts are not normally executed by imap unless you try to use IMAPsieve or FILTER=SIEVE extensions.

and then send yourself mail and provide debug logs for lmtp?

The problem for the personal script is the path statement, it does not translate the %d and %n as domain and user. I can hardcode the domain, but what variable to use for the user?

As upgrading documentation indicates, 2.4 does not support %u or %n anymore, you should use
%{user}, %{user|username}, %{user|domain}.

It has nothing to do with your sieve scripts not being executed though. You can ignore it, it's a debut message.
Sieve scripts are not normally executed by imap unless you try to use IMAPsieve or FILTER=SIEVE extensions.

Finally got it working had to change the directories and one user had a corrupted site script.
sieve_script personal { driver = file path = ~/sieve active_path = /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/mail/hbsimon.net/%{user | username}/.dovecot.sieve }

I'd expect the software client to notify me about incoming mails (like it is happening in many setups and clients) as simply as possible. I'd deploy push notifications if one would also like to receive mobile notifications or in need of an advanced wide-scale mechanism for professional installations.
So if you expect a pop-up message in your browser, I suspect that push notification is a more complex solution compared to what you are looking for - I may be wrong.
