[Dovecot] Feature Missing OUTBOX Folder
Hi Dovecot People,
i have switched my system from courier-imap to dovecot and iam quite happy with it, the performance is well and i had nearly no problems.
One little feature iam missing is in Courier i had a folder called "Outbox" there i could paste mails which i want to sent out.
In some networks its not always available to sent mails via port 21, i know i could just set up my email server to another port but it was a nice feature.
Is this a big afford or is it just alittle hack ? could it done via a little plugin ?
Thanks Timo & all others for the great work !

Awful hack, but I'm not bothered either way as I know that it will be configurable if it is included, just like all of Timo's other great work :)

It should never be possible to send mail via port 21, that's the assigned port for FTP. However you can almost always get mail out of any network on the SMTP standard submission port of 587.

A plugin would seem like the best place for it.

You can achieve this by running a cron script picking up those files from Maildir easily, e.g.:
sendmail -t -F"Full name" -f"sender" < ~user/Maildir/.Outbox/new/xyz
- -F and -f depend on user and/or must be verified from the From: field of the mail.

well i would like to have this for all users which also dont have shell access, its really only a workarround to just parse the maildirs of all users in a big environment.
additionally the outbox feature would deliver the mail over the local smtp server and this in time, and not if the script executes.

What do you see as the benefit of a Dovecot plugin over a free-standing sending gadget?

Also, Dovecot could advertise an ad-hoc IMAP capacity, which could be understood by MUAs.
