Nothing is listening on /var/run/dovecot. It must be a relict from the
old version 1.x

I can run it as root but not as vmail
# su vmail doveconf -m lda base_dir auth_socket_path
/usr/bin/doveconf: /usr/bin/doveconf: cannot execute binary file
# doveconf -m lda base_dir auth_socket_path
base_dir = /usr/var/run/dovecot
auth_socket_path = auth-userdb
You are great! So the problem is dovecot-lda does not find the sockets.
Can I tell it to look in /usr/var/run/dovecot?
