I think this needs some clarification:

there are at least two component involved:

- the storage component

- the protocol/frontend

For the protocol we have usually caldav and ActiveSync.

 For the storage mechanism, we can store contacts in some database or in
IMAP folders. ( we can obviously imagine other methods but there are the
most used)
