[Dovecot] Another numptie question - making maildirs for shared mailboxes.

Hi there, Sorry to have so much trouble with my Dovecot setup & to ask so many questions, but I'm having some problems with shared folders. I've read the thread at <http://dovecot.org/pipermail/dovecot/2005-January/006079.html> and added the following lines to /etc/dovecot.conf: namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes } namespace public { separator = / prefix = General/ location = maildir:/tmp/dovecot-test/ inbox = no hidden = no } So I create a directory /tmp/dovecot-test/ and an empty file /tmp/dovecot-test/dovecot-shared with liberal (777 & 666 respectively) permissions and then try to subscribe to the "General" folder in Outlook - I get a "failed to subscribe to the folder. The server responded `the mailbox doesn't exist: General`" error message, but cur, new & tmp are created in /tmp/dovecot-test. These subfolders are owned by the user that attempted to subscribe & have 700 permissions; chmod'ing them 777 makes no difference. Since "default_mail_env = maildir:%h/.maildir" in dovecot.conf I make a directory /tmp/dovecot-test/.maildir also containing cur, new, tmp & dovecot-shared. When I select "IMAP folders" in Outlook I am still unable to subscribe to "General" but am now able to subscribe to "General/maildir". The subscribed folder is shown in Outlook underneath the users' Inbox as a sub-folder of general, screenshot at <http://linux.stroller.uk.eu.org/DovecotSharedFolders.png> - see how I can't subscribe to "General" alone, but it is "brought in" by subscribing to "General/maildir"? If I try to copy a test message into General then, after a delay of a minute or so, I get "Can't move the items - this IMAP command could not be sent to the server before the connect was terminated"; if I try to copy the test message into General/maildir then I immediately get "Can't copy the items. The server responded: `Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information [2005-12-20 12:05:40]". I've tried tinkering with other directory structures under /tmp/dovecot-test/ with no success - can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong, please? It's quite important to me that the "General" folder is a fairly high-level one - only one additional folder icon should show up for the users' shared mail. At one point I managed to create a folder General/General, but that's undesirable - the users wouldn't understand the concept of having a folder showing in Outlook that they can't write to, or which is only used as a container for another folder. (In any case, I believe I was still unable to write to it). I was about to say, "I know I could resolve this with the use of a symlink-type shared folder, but that's undesirable because I'd have to manually add the symlink for each user that's added to the system", but writing this it occurs to me that I could resolve that by adding the symlink to the the etc/skel/. Nevertheless, I see the namespaces approach as more elegant, as it allows for different user groups having different shared folders. I'd appreciate any advice - I suspect I'm just getting the directory hierarchies wrong, or the syntax of dovecot.conf wrong AGAIN! If anyone with a working shared folders setup could provide a copy of the appropriate section of dovecot.conf & a listing of the appropriate directories then I'd be EXTREMELY grateful. Stroller.

The search order is as follows. The search stops upon the first successful lookup. (...) o The user(a)domain.tld address, without address exten- sion, is looked up next. o Finally, the recipient @domain is looked up. --- Basicaly this allows to have separate users assigned addresses like j.doe(a)example.com (first account), j.smith(a)example.com (second account) and at the same time to have a "catch all" anything(a)example.com mailbox (for the administrator e.g.). What do I need it for? To have dovecot-lda working. Why? I want Sieve :) The test data may look as follows: account #1: + mail: j.doe(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.c.doe(a)example.com account #2: + mail: j.smith(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: j.t.smith(a)example.com account #3 (administrator): + mail: bofh(a)example.com + mailAlternateAddress: @example.com (means - anything possible) The filter I used is (more or less - for both pass_filter and user_filter): (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=@%d)) Just for testing purposes I've stripped off some irrelevant data (like checking if the account is active), since that made the filter about 140 characters long ;) The trouble is when there're both a "catch all" and a true account that are linked to different accounts. As an example, if I try to send mail to "j.doe(a)example.com" I receive: dovecot: auth(default): ldap(j.doe(a)example.com): Multiple replies found for user Which is of course true, since the filter returns "account #2" and "account #3". What I'd like to get? I'd like to set the filter to: (|(mail=%u)(mailAlternateAddress=%u)) Where "%u" is expanded to "j.doe(a)example.com" during the first run Then, if dovecot can't find any user that would match this literaly it should retry the search operation, but now with "@example.com" as the "%u". I've tried to fiddle with the filter itself, but I see any reasonable way of doing it. I don't even know if it is possible at all. Could anyone give me a hint? Or maybe it's already on someone's whish list? [Dovecot] NFS

I've finally managed to run Dovecot without errors in two computers with maildir and indexes stored in NFS. I added a page to wiki about this: http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS Suggestions how to keep attribute cache enabled but to allow Dovecot to specifically request not to use a cached value (when it's important) would be welcome.

[Dovecot] MAILDIR environment

from docs/mail-storages.txt: "Also as a special case, if MAILDIR environment exists, maildir storage is used with the directory specified in it." Forgive me if this seems obvious, but is this talking about setting MAILDIR as an enivornment variable? I have it set on my system in both /etc/profile and ~/.bash_profile: MAILDIR=/path/to/maildir/ export MAILDIR and have confirmed this worked by running 'echo $MAILDIR'. I've logged the user in question out and then in again, as well as restarting dovecot but it still defaults to checking ~/Maildir when the user logs in. Setting the location using default_mail_env is not an option here as I need the fallback behaviour that occurs when default_mail_env is not set. Any advice appreciated.

Hi, Running the current debian unstable version (1.0.beta2) dovecot tells me: $ /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail imap Error: No protocols given in configuration file Could this be changed? I don't need dovecot listening on any ports but would still like to allow this usage... Or should I configure protocols but no listen addresses instead? [if so the debian package needs an update because it filters out the case of no protocols and doesn't start dovecot in that case] johannes

[Dovecot] Something other than dotlock for uidlist locking?

If I read the code correctly, only dotlocks are supported for locking of dovecot-uidlist. And I don't see any settings in the config file for it. As it turns out, dotlocks are very slow on my system, due to their implementation via hardlinks. Would it be possible to support other locking mechanisms for locking of the uidlist file? -jdb

[Dovecot] making Dovecot match Courier POP3 UID's

Hi, guys. I've read the information in the Wiki about making dovecot's UID's match Courier's UID's in the POP3 server, so that a UIDL command on either server will return the same UID's for the same group of messages. However, what I've read doesn't match what I'm seeing in Courier. Courier appears to keep the UID numbers for messages that it uses for the POP3 server separate from the UID numbers for the IMAP server. Courier has a file: courierpop3dsizelist which has a line for every message, like: 1129610881.6075832619.blade4:2,S 2361 1478:1065670602 1129727025.1168007000.blade1:2,S 14718 1479:1065670602 1130005953.3295720403.blade5:2,S 1554 1481:1065670602 1130108068.0849623942.blade5:2,S 8246 1482:1065670602 The first column is the maildir filename, the last column is the UID that the POP3 server uses and the UID validity. Both are used to create the UID number returned by UIDL. The IMAP server uses a completely different UID number that's stored in courierimapuiddb. So, it seems to me that dovecot can't ever match Courier's UID numbers for the POP3 server unless it reads and interprets this courierpop3dsizelist file. My Courier-IMAP installation is Courier-IMAP 4.0.6. Any ideas? This is a real hassle because it means I can't switch the POP3 server from Courier to Dovecot or, if I do, lots of my users will download every message again which is just unacceptable. Thanks Jeff

[Dovecot] Getting maildir++ quotas working

Can somebody post details for how to get maildir++ quotas working in the latest CVS? I have tried but can't get the CAPABILITY string to show "QUOTA"; and the GETQUOTAROOT command is recognized, but returns nothing... 2 GETQUOTAROOT INBOX * QUOTAROOT "INBOX" "" * QUOTA "" () 2 OK Getquotaroot completed. These are the settings I have... am I missing something? protocol imap { mail_plugins = imap_quota quota mail_plugin_dir = /usr/lib/dovecot/imap } plugin { quota = maildir imap_quota = maildir } Here are some more details: Dovecot is creating the maildirsize file in my maidir, and it seems to show correct storage used calculations, but the first line which should contain my storage limits is blank. So I suspect that I am not returning a valid quota value from the user database. I am returning what my old Courier-IMAP wants to see "1073741824S,4000C"... if the format for Dovecot is different, what should the format be? So there are two problems that I am trying to resolve, but I'm not sure how to go about fixing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated: (1) Dovecot isn't announcing QUOTA support in the capability string. (2) Dovecot isn't getting a valid quota limit, which I assume is breaking the GETQUOTAROOT command. Thanks, Bill
