[Dovecot] Rename public folders

I've got a number of public mailboxes configured for my users. We pretty much have to use Entourage for a client, which insists on creating all new subfolders with the name 'Untitled Folder'. When they try to rename these subfolders with useful names, Dovecot returns A028 NO [CANNOT] Renaming not supported across non-private namespaces. I guess this is because renaming a subfolder could potentially break subscriptions for other users? Or is it a hard requirement from IMAP RFC? If the former, is the problem merely very complicated, but eventually fixable, or is it just intractable? We're using Dovecot 2.0.7 from the atrpms RPM, Redhat EL 5.0. Interesting since imap_acl also makes dovecot segfault. Maybe there is a problem in the way Dovecot loads plugins? [Dovecot] Can I get rid of the fchown log messages?

Hi, Since upgrading dovecot version (from somewhat ancient to 1.2.16), I see messages in the logs like these: Jan 15 00:55:17 srv0303 dovecot: POP3(obm03): fchown(/home/obm/obm03/mail/.imap/INBOX/dovecot.index.tmp, -1, 8(mail)) failed: Operation not permitted (egid=1033(obm), group based on /var/mail/obm03) I know that this is because the mailbox in /var/mail has ownership username:mail. However, in this setup this is intentional, and quota-related (quota on inbox is enforced by Exim, not Dovecot, and kernel does group-quota but not for group mail). Also, group read rights for group mail are intentional. >From what I read on this list, it has something to do with shared folders. I did not (at least it wasn't my intention) configure users' inboxes as shared folders. So, is there a way to disable these log messages, or, to disable Dovecot's attempts to try to change the owner/group of the index/cache/log files when these are inside the user's private ~/mail folder? More specifically, is there a way to do this without changing anything to users' inbox permissions? Thanks, Maarten

Hi, I maintain postfix mailserver with sudo enabled dovecot LDA using multiple uids. I want to enforce quotas per-unix-user (which can have multiple domains with multiple emails set up using postfixadmin), so I have set up a FS quota backend with imap_quota plugin. Unfortunately, the quota appears to work (when i disable chrooting) according to dovecot-info.log, but doesn't send anything over IMAP. I found several topics related to this bug in this mailing list, but without any reply. After installing dovecot 2.0.8 (just updated to 2.0.9) I installed the fts plugin 2.0.9 and get several seconds after reloading dovecot segfaults. I've checked my setup - the guest is not set to sync with the VMware host. NTP is running with local clock server commented out & 'tinker panic 0' set. It sounds like this is not a Dovecot issue so I'll stop posting to this list now and seek help elsewhere. What negative effects to Dovecot would I expect to see where the system clock is constantly changing?

I'm working on a web based software that provides a simple webmail ( http://modoboa.org/) I'm wondering what would an efficient way to detect if a message (or a group of messages) has attachments. OK, so I decided to go ahead and just upgrade to the latest 1 series Dovecot and see if that solves my ACL/config issues I've been having. (I tried compiling 2.0.9, but it errored out and I assume that's because it's a pretty old machine/compiler.) Anyway, 1.2.16 compiled fine, and I installed it in another location from the currently running 1.1 series install. I have this new install running (IMAP) on a non-standard port while I test it out, and it starts fine and all seems well. However, I'm wondering, is it OK to run it and have it look at the same Maildir mailboxes as the currently running 1.1 series install? Does that have the potential to mess with indexes or change anything in a bad way? (FWIW, I tried it briefly, and after changing the port number in and restarting my mail client [Thunderbird], it had trouble pulling up the mailbox I was trying to access.) David

Hi, I was trying out Kerberos authentication with som sample users for Dovecot and stumbled into this problem: The user names are of the form local-part@domain, so the Kerberos principal becomes "local-part\@domain@REALM". But it seems Dovecot (1.2.9) doesn't understand that syntax. Looking at the 2.0.8 sources I guess it's not supported. But isn't this a valid Kerberos principal? Is it a bug, or a missing feature or is there a special reason for not supporting it ? kind regards, Peter

Does that error just basically mean something's set wrong somewhere in dovecot.conf? David

[Dovecot] Denying authentication

Hello, I've been running dovecot for over 3 years now and it works with no problems. I have it setup so that it authenticates users against Active Directory via LDAP and so far no problems. What I would like to know is if there is any way that I could deny access for users trying to access email via cellphones or email clients outside the company. I can close everything since there are a few users that need to get emails from outside the company via cell phone of email clients. I was thinking if there was a way to lets say create a group in AD named: "remote-email" that will allow connection and authentication from any network, any user not in that group will only be able to authenticate if the source is 192.168.xx.xx/24. Is this possible? Maybe not with Dovecot, but maybe someone else has any ideas..? Thanks -------- Romer Ventura

[Dovecot] Making shared folders "unmovable"

I have set up an area of shared folders with Dovecot 1.2 that is accessed by several people (by way of one account, and everyone who logs in sees these same folders), and the only problem with this setup is that occasionally somebody moves one of the folders underneath another folder or somewhere else in the folder structure, and this sometimes disrupts some automatic procmail filters and the like. Is there a way to keep folders in a shared setup such as this "static" or "unmovable" so that the users can't disrupt the structure? Like, where the folder structure itself can't be changed, but new messages can still come in to the folders? David

[Dovecot] How do folk . . . Aggregate system mail from LAN machines?

List, good evening, Running Dovecot for external email, but not yet worked out how (best) to aggregate 'system' mail from other machines on the LAN. By system mail, I mean mails generated by the OS or by applications, and addressed to root, or 'some admin user', etc. Ideally, these would be seen by 'root' or 'some admin user' or whoever on our existing Dovecot/IMAP system. Our scale is not large, we only have 5 servers on the LAN doing various things. I wondered how other Dovecot users do this. I've thought of 3 possibilities: 1. Install Dovecot on each LAN machine, and use Fetchmail to retrieve the messages using POP so that local mail stores were emptied. 2. Perhaps, use a 'forwarding' mechanism of some sort on each LAN machine, but that would require an MTA on each LAN machine, would it not? 3. I wondered whether /etc/alias, mentioned in a recent post by Simone Caruso, might help though again, presumably, requiring an MTA on each LAN machine. What do you do? regards, Ron

I just updated MySQL to Server version: 5.5.8 on my FreeBSD-8.2 system. Now Dovecot refuses to run. Prior to this, dovecot had been running for several years without a problem. [Dovecot] mail quota dovecot 1.2.15-3

Dear all, I am attempting to enforce quota with Dovecot 1.2.15-3 using LDA for deliver. I use smtp-source (postfix) to deliver large messages but the quota is never noticed. The webmail interface is Roundcube, and the admin is performed using Postfixadmin. I have not looked into the postfix portion for quota, yet. Is there something that I have missed from the configuration? Hello, i already read http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/RefilterMail but it won't work here :( I have many old mails in my folders and need to refilter many of them. But there are many mails without a delivered-to-header. What can i do? Error: Configuration error: envelope_recipient specified header missing (delivered-to:1) Would be okay if getmail would just skip the mail, but it cancels. Not sure if there is any way around. [Dovecot] Connection queue full on my directors

I finally upgraded to v1.2.16 on my backend servers, with ldap instead of previously mysql, and put a couple of dovecot v2.0.8 directors in front of them (used haproxy previously). It seemed to work OK initially, but after a few hours we got bit by "Connection queue full" problems on the directors. So I now set default_process_limit=512 and also: service anvil { client_limit=1027 } since dovecot said that was now required. Things seems to be working, but I'm afraid default_process_limit=512 is too low: $ ps -ef|grep dovecot/pop3-login|wc -l 192 $ ps -ef|grep dovecot/imap-login|wc -l 472 so looks like I'm quite close to hitting this limit for my imap logins. We will eventually put up some webmail servers (using imapproxy to keep connections alive), that will be connecting over these directors. Then we will expect to have a lot more active imap sessions over these directors. Should we just keep increasing default_process_limit, or per service process_limit, and follow dovecots warnings about client_limits for auth/anvil.. or will we be getting into other problems like running out of file descriptors? Are there any max'es we should expect to run into ? Hi, I'm trying to control access to different services on an Debian server using /etc/group. So that a user I create for FTP usage doesn't fill up my server with IMAP folders or samba garbage. Services like proftpd have: "AllowGroup ftpgroup" sshd have "AllowGroups sshgroup" And samba have "valid users = @smbgroup" But I can't find the correct option in Dovecot (/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf) Do anyone have the magic option or a workaround thats doesn't envolve maintaining seperate user databases and password? (I know its needed for samba but besides that) /Neergaard

[Dovecot] utility to copy/sync IMAP mailboxes

Well, my Dovecot server (v2.0.8) is up and running, and now it's time to migrate mailboxes from the old mail server [Lotus Domino Release 5.0.8] running on Windows NT 4.0 [ancient -- been the mail server since Aug-2000]. I saw "dsync(1)" and thought my troubles were over. Only I can't figure out how to make it work with the NT/Domino server as a source for mailboxes. I guess dsync(1) works only in completely *nix environment. I've been trying the imapcopy.pl script from the IMAP Tools web page (http://www.athensfbc.com/imap_tools/) but it is having problems with Notes' choice of the backslash (\) character as a mailbox (namespace?) delimiter. Any suggestions for a stable, reliable (copy/duplicate/mirror/sync) tool that can do the job using only IMAP access? (No SSL support required.) Thanks in advance, - Don

[Dovecot] Max number of mail processes

Dovecot version 1.1.11. Error: Maximum number of mail processes exceeded (see max_mail_processes setting). I can't seem to get rid of these errors. I get batches of these errors about 4 or 5 times a day. I have a cron-job checking for the existence of this error and then I reboot dovecot when I see this error, but what is causing this error ? What I am reading on the Internet about this particular issue has not helped to resolve the issue. I would really like to know how many mail processes it thinks that it is using at any one instant in time. Is this possible ? Maybe then I can track the reason for the error.

[Dovecot] enforce STARTTLS on port 110 with POP3?

Hi there, We are using DoveCot 1.0.7. User will use POP3 or POP. We want to force user to securely send their credential and keep a secure connection between us and them. We can do TLS/SSL on port 995, or STARTTLS on port 110. The problem is that we have no way to enforce STARTTLS on 110, user can connect to DoveCot on port 110, sending user credential without STARTTLS (thus insecure). Reading DoveCot documentation does not sound it supports this. Here is what I got from documentation. Dovecot supports: * IMAP (including TLS/STARTTLS) * IMAP+SSL ("imaps") * POP3 (including TLS/STLS) * POP3+SSL ("pops") My only option to enforce securely sending user credential is to enable port 995 and disable port 110, sound right? I'm a nube to Dovecot and this list. Please be kind. ;) I'm running Dovecot 1.1.20 and Postfix 2.5.5 on OS X Server 10.6.6. I've moved accounts from another, older cyrus-based server (thank god), and used fetchmail to imap the existing mail to the new server. At some point, I developed a problem with my partition map being semi-ignored. Mail is stored in multiple places, and I'm not sure why or entirely clear how it ended up there. My log is overflowing with entries such as… Jan 10 15:44:57 gilded-bat dovecot[65]: auth(default): od(john_doe_com): unable to find partition for tag=johndoe: using default mail location: /var/spool/imap/dovecot/mail …referring to each of my defined partitions. Here's what I semi-understand. /etc/dovecot/partition_map.conf.default contains: default:/var/spool/imap/dovecot/mail /etc/dovecot/partition_map.conf contains correct entries like default:/Mail JohnDoe:/Groups/JohnDoe/Mail [etc.] dovecotd -n is below. It's configuration with regard to mail store locations look ok to me, but then I'm a virgin. In practice, mail is being stored in three different locations. They're all full of mail directories and are busy. /var/spool/imap/dovecot/mail /Mail /Groups/JohnDoe/Mail …with of course the third entry being many entries for each client. The directories described definitely exist. Clients started out being able to see old mail that was transferred from the retired server, but no longer do. I'm not actually clear which of the three mail stores in use are being accessed by whom or for what. (And let's not even ask why none of this showed up in testing.) In short, I'm over my head and the villagers are outside with the usual pitchforks and torches. [Dovecot] dsync not copying all mail

Hi, I'm still trying to migrate from Dovecot 1.2.16 to 2.0.7 on FreeBSD. Previous attempts have failed with mails not being visible after the upgrade. Version 1.2.16 was migrated from maildir to dbox about a year ago via the convert-plugin. After previous attempts to "clean" the hybrid maildir-dbox situation I used imapsync to copy all mails from the old account to a new account. I would assume in this case I get a clean dbox-mailmap. Hi, I'm trying to find a way to find inactive users. Is there a simple way to deduct the last login date of a user from that users Maildir files? Are the timestamps on the index files reliable? I ask because the system and dovecot logs are not available to me but I can search the whole .../vmail/domain/user/Maildir tree. I'n running 1.2.9 on ububtu 10.04 LTS with posttfix and postfixadmin. [Dovecot] Urgent problem: Dovecot fetches the same mails multiple times per POP

I have a problem since a couple of hours: I manage several mboxes on a virtual server using Dovecot (over POP3). Until a few hours ago, it worked well, but since 11:50, the e-mail clients which access Dovecot's mailboxes, receive all e-mails new each time the mailbox is queried. For example: 15:40 fetches 22 new mails 15:41 fetches the same 22 mails again as new 15:42 fetches the same 22 mails again as new etc. Dovecot version is 1.0.15 on Debian Lenny. How can I fix this? How can I diagnose what's wrong? The mailbox files themselves seem ok, no dupe messages. When i changed sendmail_path to original sednmail binary it's working and vacation is sent, but i can see some errors from sendmail. [Dovecot] CatchAll virtual user removes spamheaders

Hi all, I am having a small problem with a catch-all user I have setup in my Postfix/Dovecot setup. I am not 100% sure this is Dovecot related, but, logic tells me it is. I have a virtual user called @reinhold.dk setup to redirect to my main account, peter(a)reinhold.dk. If I send a spam mail (GTUBE) to peter(a)reinhold.dk, the mail is marked with Amavis x-headers as it should be. If I send the same mail to peterpeter(a)reinhold.dk, I can see in my maillog that the mail is PASSED SPAMMY, just as the first one, but when I check the mail, all amavis x-headers are missing. (Except one, X-Spam-Virus-Scanned:, which just informs me that the mail has passed through the scanner) Does anyone know if this is a Dovecot issue? (It seems so to me), and if so, any hints on how I can change this behaviour? Hi, I am new to Dovecot. Recently I have got a new server running on Ubuntu Server 10.04 with Postfix, Dovecot (for IMAP) and Squirrelmail. During the test, I was able to send & receive emails internally, and can send emails externally. However, I got a problem when it comes to receiving emails externally. The emails I sent from yahoo never arrived to my local inbox. I have a very bizarre problem that I hope someone can help me with. I am not sure if this is a Dovecot problem, or IMAP client problem. I recently used Transend's Migrator to move mail from Exchange 2007 to my Dovecot 1.0.7 server. The program seems to have moved the nested IMAP dirs properly as seen below in a directory listing of the maildir dir. The nested dirs have indexes, cur, new dirs as expected. However, when the account is viewed in Windows Thunderbird 3.1.6 or Outlook 2010 the 3rd tier dirs are not seen, nor can they be subscribed to. On a whim, I decided to try Apple Mail 4.3 to view the account and all the IMAP dirs can be seen and accessed as expected. Any idea what is going on? Is this somehow an IMAP client problem (bug) or an issue with Dovecot and these clients? [Dovecot] Pointers for developing a proper encryption plugin?

Hi all, One thing that's always itching when I think about mail-servers, is the storage of e-mail messages in (rather) plain-text. Meaning, any administrator with sufficient privileges would be able to read messages not meant for them. Of course, PGP alike solutions exist, but that's not for the masses. In my opinion I would like to have e-mail messages stored encrypted using a (strong) user-supplied password. That password would ideally be the same as the one the user logs in with. So for me it's okay to place and enforce that requirement on any of the users. Having this in place would for sure reassure external auditors/accountants of any kind. Having Google'd from here to 'yonder and consulting experts on Experts Exhange, I have come up with only this pointer: http://dovecot.markmail.org/search/?q=dovecot+encrypt#query:dovecot%20encry… It mention the same issue, and also mentions the non-existence of a solution (back in May 2010). But, beforing diving into developing solutions myself, I have to be absolutely sure that there isn't any solution yet. And, in consequence of non-existence: what would allow me to fasttrack any development efforts on this? Is there an overview available where I could learn the best approach for plugin development? Hi, Sorry. This is what I find when I try to run Dovecot. # dovecot -F Segmentation fault If I comment out the SSL configuration values, then: # dovecot -F doveconf: Fatal: Error in configuration file /opt/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf: ssl enabled, but ssl_cert not set These are the configure options, "--enable-maintainer-mode" & "--enable-devel-checks" were added with the hope that dovecot would produce a more verbose error message. ./configure --prefix=/opt --with-ssl=openssl --disable-dependency-tracking --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-devel-checks None of the log files have been touched since before this version of Dovecot was installed (logging was initially part of the configuration).
