[Dovecot] Upgrade from 1.2.16 with sieve/managesieve to 2.0.8 with pigeonhole

Hi, I would like to upgrade my server from 1.2.16 with sieve and managesieve to 2.0.8 with pigeonhole. Will I get all functionality I was having before? Should this migration be painless or will it require some additional work? I've read the Upgrading guide so I know I need to create an additional user. I've migrated the mails from Maildir to dbox in the past (using the convert plugin); does that mean I'm fully dbox or am I in a maildir-dbox hybrid situation? Hello, Currently Dovecot (and any other application, which cares about e-mail delivery) does at least one fsync per mail delivery. Given that hard disk drives have a very limited IOPS, this effectively limits the maximum mail delivery performance to a very low value, under utilizing the available storage IO capacity. Calculating with an average mail size of 50 kB and an average consumer HDD with 120 IOPS, the theoretical mail delivery performance will be 50 kB*120 IOPS=5.85 MBps. But if we could write 500 kB with every transaction, the delivery speed would be nearly 10 times as well. Dovecot have two process models: separate processes for each client connection and an async in-process multiplexing method. This works for each one, albeit the timing is somewhat different. So here's the idea: instead of fsyncing immediately in the LDA (lmtpd) every time when the client says "\r\n.\r\n" after the DATA phase, let's introduce a user settable timer (let's call that sync_delay from now on) and only sync in every sync_delay seconds. This would introduce an up to sync_delay seconds delay in lmtpd returning "250 Ok" to the client, but that's generally not a problem, because in high traffic setups there is a great amount of concurrency, so you could use a lot of client connections easily. Take an example setting of sync_delay = 100 ms. With this, 10 syncs would happen in every second from Dovecot LDA processes, meaning if a client connects in t=0 it will immediately got the response 250, if a client connects in t=0.05, it will get the response in 50 ms (in an ideal world, where syncing does not take time), and the committed blocks could accumulate for a maximum of 100 ms. In a busy system (where this setting would make sense), it means it would be possible to write more data with less IOPS needed. I can see two problems: 1. there is no call for committing a lot of file descriptors in one transaction, so instead of fsync() for each of the modified FDs, a sync() would be needed. sync() writes all buffers to stable storage, which is bad if you have a mixed workload, where there are a lot of non-fsynced data, or other heavy fsync users. But modern file systems, like ZFS will write those back too, so there an fsync(fd) is -AFAIK- mostly equivalent with a sync(pool on which fd is). sync() of course is system wide, so if you have other file systems, those will be synced as well. (this setting isn't for everybody) 2. in a multiprocess environment this would need coordination, so instead of doing fsyncs in distinct processes, there would be one process needed, which does the sync and returns OK for the others, so they can notify the client about the commit to the stable storage. Any opinions on this?

[Dovecot] virtual user problems

dovecot 2.0.8 with postfix; transfer postfix -> dovecot by lmtp is fine Now i have to redirect a couple of virtual email names (like admin(a)mydomain.com, postmaster@, webmaster@, info@, sales@ ...) to a single user postbox named xxx@mydomain. As I use mysql for the auth-sql, it's returning userhome /home/<name>/maildir for all sql requests to <name>=admin, postmaster etc. I also verified that "doveadm user info" is returning the maildir/home: /home/xxx/maildir So I assumed, that all mails to admin, postmaster etc. are transfered to user xxx mailbox. But it isn't. Dovecot is creating the maildirs /home/admin/maildir, /home/info/maildir and so on. What do I miss here to get that virtual users mapped to the correct user xxx? Regards Birte

[Dovecot] case (non-)sensitivity for folder names

Is IMAP supposed to be case sensitive or case in-sensitive? It seemed it would be case sensitive because I've had different cases of folders. But today I found I had two folders "Spam" and "spam", with directories ".INBOX.Spam" and ".INBOX.spam" on the server. Messages existed in each directory on the server and they were different. The messages could be read from Evolution. However, the list of messages had info mixed up between the folders. I then selected all messages in one of the folders and trashed them (click on trash icon). Messages disappeared in BOTH folders. On the server, after a couple minutes delay, messages in BOTH directories were flagged "T". That doesn't seem right. But I don't know enough about what IMAP is supposed to do, or on which end the names of folders get remapped into directory names, to even guess which is messed up here. I do know Evolution keeps a track of what it thinks the folder has, because in the past I have just "rm -fr" on a folder directory and Evolution still showed each message in its list, although it could not access them. Anyone know what's the deal with that? Unfortunately, there seems to be no operation in Evolution to tell it to discard its own cache. I'm also wondering if life would be any better if I used Thunderbird. -- sHiFt HaPpEnS!

Hi there, I've just been experimenting with the latest courier-dovecot-migrate.pl script and I notice that it favours keeping pop3 UIDL ordering rather than IMAP UID preservation. There is this comment (line 312): # POP3 clients may want to get POP3 UIDLs in the same order always. # Preserve the order even if it causes IMAP UIDs to change. Does anyone have details as to which clients this actually causes a problem with? If it's some really old software then perhaps we'd prefer to keep the imap UID's the same but change the POP3 UIDL ordering (not the UIDL numbering though of course) Thanks, Mark

FYI it seems dovecot 2.0.8 fails to start on RHEL5 with IPv6 disabled ("alias net-pf-10 off" in modprobe.conf) unless one specify "listen = *". Not sure if this is a known problem, or just a hint that we should start enabling ipv6 on our mailservers... ;-) -jf

[Dovecot] Lazy expunge for performance ?

Some filesystems are quite slow at deleting files, so I'm wondering if anybody is using the lazy expunge plugin to implement a solution where expunged messages are moved to a separate directory structure within the same filesystem, and later deleted as a nighly batchjob ? Assuming expunge renames/moves messages, and don't do a copy + delete.. Does something like this make sense ? -jf

[Dovecot] dovecot + sendmail, what LDA setup?

I have an existing setup with sendmail, dovecot, on debian. I want to move LDA and move from using mbox to using Maildir. I have only 'real' users and aliases, no virtual users. What is a recommended, trouble free, LDA setup? procmail is of course on possibility, but I'd be unlikely ever to use any of its advanced features, just simple local mail delivery. I'd like to use deliver, but most of the dovecot as LDA sample configs I have seen seem to assume I am using it for virtual users. Advice? Pointers to a simple working setup for sendmail, dovecot, Maildir? Cheers David

[Dovecot] re-indexing moved mail

I have a huge block of email that was misdelivered into the wrong folder. Moving it where it should be is not just all from one folder to being all of another folder. Basically, the index files need to be rebuilt. Looking in the wiki I cannot find how to do this. It all seems to be about installation, and no administrative tools. Or would it be just as simple as delete certain index files and they would be automagically rebuilt? -- sHiFt HaPpEnS!

I created a virtual mailbox which maps to a single physical mailbox (in Dovecot 1.x I did this with a symlink but had intermittent problems with Dovecot 2.0 doing the same.) However, I can only copy one message at a time into the mailbox. OK - I thought this was going to be easy. Maybe it is. I'm just not that good at reading directions. Trying to use dsync. Getting this error: Mail locations must use the same virtual mailbox hierarchy separator (specify separator for the default namespace) Currently using maildir. The setup is as follows: mail_uid = mail mail_gid = mail mail_location = maildir:/vhome/%d/home/%n:INDEX=/imap-cache/%d-%n I don't have any namespace setting. Not quite sure what a namespace is or why I need one. This is what I'm trying to run: dsync -u marc(a)perkel.com backup sdbox:/email/%d/home/%n What I'm hoping to do is do a mass conversion while running. Then shut it down - do a second quick pass - and bring it up in sdbox format. Thanks in advance.

Hello, I just installed dovecot version 2.0.8 from the source tarball. After doing ./configure, make, and make install, I don't have the dovecotpw binary anywhere. It is not in /usr/local/bin or /usr/local/sbin where the other binaries are; I also did a find / for it and don't see it. Is there some configuration flag I'm missing? I read the flags in ./configure --help and nothing seems obviously applicable to me. Is there a cryptography library I could be missing? I have the libs installed for crypt, md5, etc. Thanks, Kristina

Hello, I am trying to use two namespaces to create an "archival" directory that is stored as mboxes (the rest of my tree is all stored as maildirs). However, when I add the second namespace, suddenly Dovecot starts emitting, in response to the LIST command, a second version of the INBOX that is marked as \NoSelect. It's long over due, but now I finally plan on upgrading from v1.0.15 to v1.2.16 on our servers. Would appreciate any comments! We have 7 servers, all running of the same GPFS filesystem. Both maildirs and indexes are stored here. We use dovecot for POP/IMAP and deliver. Currently we're using mysql as authentication source, but want to move to using ldap instead. Can we upgrade one server at a time, or do we need to upgrade all servers at the same time ? http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.1 says "Index files have slightly changed as well. Upgrading to v1.1 should go transparently, but moving back to v1.0 might again cause some errors." which makes me think we can't have both versions running against the same users ? Also, if we upgrade only one server, should we switch to "mmap_disable=no" on this one, or keep running with "mmap_disable=yes" on all servers ? "NFS users should now set mail_nfs_storage=yes and mail_nfs_index=yes." Does this apply to any shared/networked filesystems, and is this relevant for GPFS ? Hi, I've changed my running qmail/vpopmail/procmail/courier-imap/sqwebmail installation to qmail/vpopmail/siege/dovecot/horde imp. So far, I've got everything running. Authentification with vpopmail as passdb is working, Mail delivery with siege into different Mail folders is working as well. Hi, I've recently significantly improved the automated Dovecot Debian package builder. At the beginning it only produced i386 binaries for Debian testing. A few weeks back I added a slave builder that builds packages for Debian stable. Today I have extended the slave builder with support for multiple architectures and I've added amd64 binaries to the repository. The master builder still builds packages for testing/i386 every hour. The slaves check for new source packages about 20 minutes later. Recently i upgraded to 2.0.7 (freebsd ports), but it stopped working, says the error in the subject line. [Dovecot] Problem with requiring client certificates for external connections

Folks, I'm trying to configure my dovecot installation to require client certificates for external/Internet connections, while still allowing my local network to not need certificates. This configuration is for Dovecot 2 (2.0.8 in Fedora 14), and I've tried to use the "remote" block to give different definitions for my local network vs the defaults. While most options seem to be set fine, if I set "auth_ssl_require_client_cert" to yes as the default, and reset it to no for my local network, dovecot still requests a client certificate and fails as one is not supplied. Am I correct that it can be reset in a "remote" block, or is it treated differently to other options? In fact do I have the configuration correct, as there doesn't really seem to be anything documenting "remote" or "remote_ip" or related items for Dovecot 2. Related to this, much of the documentation states that the variable is "ssl_require_client_cert", seems to be accepted by ignored, vs "auth_ssl_require_client_cert" which does have some effects. Also, in the configuration dump, it duplicates the netmask. The configuration is below, as generated with "dovecot -n". [Dovecot] Courier-mta with Dovecot LDA again

Hi all Sorry for repost, but i don't believe that there is noone who know where the problem can be. At least developers should know :-) I have sent this post once, but without answer. I have setup dovecot lda instead of maildrop on my courier server. Delivery is working, sieve plugin too, but i can't figure out why lda can't send emails via sendmail (vacation). I always get error Error: Sendmail process terminated abnormally, exit status 67 And i know why, but i don't know how to setup lda to make it work . Here is .courier file where is redirect to lda. | /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver -a $RECIPIENT -f $SENDER But the deliver does not pass recipient address to sendmail. Hello, We have dovecot 2.0.8 in our servers with Scientific Linux SL release 5.2 (Boron). We want to ignore a mailbox and its child mailboxes. [Dovecot] Renaming IMAP folders does not affect children

Just recently Thunderbird users reported problems when renaming folders, and it seems that RFC 2060 (sec. 6.3.5) requires children of a renamed folder to be renamed, too. [Dovecot] user xxx@mydomain.com doesn't exist

new setup of Dovecot 2.0.8 with postfix local users are simply defined as Linux users named xxx, yyy et cetera; IMAP access is fine with that users. Postfix is delivering mails with two domains (to xxx(a)mydomain.com or xxx(a)mydomain.org) and these are rejected by dovecot with 550: user doesn't exist. I've tested the possible usernames with "doveadm user" xxx: okay xxx(a)mydoman.com: "userdb lookup: user xxx(a)mydomain.com doesn't exist" xxx(a)mydoman.org: "userdb lookup: user xxx(a)mydomain.org doesn't exist" Dovecot2 wiki says "Dovecot doesn't care much about domains in usernames" Okay, how to I get dovecot to ignore the domain part (or accept the two defined domains) when mails are delivered from postfix? [Dovecot] archiving

Hi, recently I installed the newest 2.x version of dovecot working with postfixadmin/mysql and it works great, thanks Timo, however I been reading dovecot's mailing list archived messages and haven't run across a good solution for archiving mail with dovecot. There was mention of using rsync but I was looking for incoming mail to be copied to another folder, maybe called archive J, in real time where the user would have only read access to the messages in the archive folder and the expire plug-in would delete messages older then x number of days. Does anyone have an suggestions on how I can implement this, I would also like to hear how some people were implement archiving if they do it differently. Also as far as shared calendars with dovecot what are my options. Sorry if it's a little off topic. Thanks, Paul

I plan on putting two dovecot directors in front of our backend dovecot pop/imap servers, instead of our current haproxy loadbalancing of the connections -- but how do we handle SSL in such a setup. Will all SSL be terminated on the directors automatically, and then proxyed plain text, or is there any configuration needed to achieve this ? Does it matter that the directors are v2.0 while the backends are running v1.2 ? -jf

[Dovecot] Dovecot Quota plugin as Couier quota

I get a similar behavior between dovecot quota plugin and courier quota with the attached patch. When the client change flags, then is forced to recalc. This is because I don't know how to get the changed flags on quota sync method. new Dovecot 2.0.8 installation on Opensuse 11.3 I got the error "lmtp (xxx(a)mydomain.yy) Error: user xxx(a)mydomain.yy: Initialization failed: Namespace '': mbox: mbox requires client_limit=1 for service" while trying to transfer mails by lmtp from postfix to dovecot. I googled and looked on the dovecot wiki about this client_limit issue, but no success. What's the syntax of the client_limit and where to place it? Into which config file? Inside the global namespace doesn't seems to work (error on dovecot start). -What's the side effect of this setting to my IMAP clients? Are multiple imap connections to the same mailbox still possible? Regards Birte Nauer

Hi all Without the listescape plugin I see the following things happen: - If I share a mailbox, dovecot-acl-list in Maildir root is updated accordingly. - If I create a subfolder in an already shared mailbox the dovecot-acl file of the parent folder is copied to the new folder and dovecot-acl-list is updated as well. When I activate the "listescape" plugin, this doesn´t happen. Additionally (with listescape enabled), if I create a folder which contains a dot and then share that folder the dovecot-acl-list looses all entries except the first found shared folder without a dot in foldername. I Hope this is not a bug but only a configuration issue. Thanks for any hints in advance and best Regards Jens

[Dovecot] Shared Folders via Symlinking

Hi folks, I'm trying to set up shared folders via symlinking and have come across a problem. I created a folder for one user, then symlinked it to another. I figured that one thing that is likely to happen at some point is that user 2 is going to decide they don't want to look at that folder any more, and will delete it, so I tried this. Much to my relief, it didn't delete the actual mails, just the symlink. However, it did alter the dovecot.index.cache file to indicate that the folder had been removed, and subsequent attempts to select this folder via the primary user resulted in an error, "NO Mailbox was deleted under us". I had to delete dovecot.index.cache to get it working again. [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.2.12 + Postfix + virtual domains: delivering to system users

As mentioned in my previous posting, I've set up a mailserver for a domain of Winboxen, authenticated through Active Directory. After some struggles, I finally got that working. But I also need to receive emails for a few system users on the mailserver (like postmaster, and a couple of accounts set up for maintaining the system). I thought, based on the way I read the documentation, that I could just add a "userdb passwd", ahead of the "userdb ldap", and deliver would find their home directory maildirs. The virtual users would fail the passwd search, fall through to the LDAP check, and deliver would drop their mail into their maildirs in the /var/mailstore tree. I knew the system users wouldn't be able to login to the IMAP server, but this isn't a concern. Instead, the system users' mail got bounced, after an auth check via the "master" socket (from Postfix, I guess: it's a transient process) whose details don't get logged. And the virtual users' lookups (done by deliver) returned made-up UIDs and GIDs, and maildir locations (/home/<realm>/<username>) completely different from what the LDAP lookup normally returns (/var/mailstore/<username>). So what am I missing here? I managed to work around this by adding the system users to the Postfix virtual.db, but it would be nice to not need to do that. It would also be nice to neable the system users to check email by logging in to the IMAP serve, but I'm reluctant to even try that after the way delivery went completely wonky. Thanks, Ran

[Dovecot] Can doveadm rebuild thread indexes?

I'm already using "doveadm search" to update my squat fts indexes (dovecot.index.search and dovecot.index.search.uids) but I'd like to also update dovecot's thread index file (dovecot.index.thread) using doveadm. I checked the new wiki and the archives but didn't see any option for this. (I'm running 2.0.8) The alternative (AFAIK) is to write a script that signs in to IMAP and does "thread references UTF-8 ALL" in each folder. As an aside, could the dovecot LDA do any of this work? I'd surely be willing to spend the resources at delivery time to keep those indexes updated if it meant I didn't have to run a cron job to keep them updated. -David Warden

I am using 2.0.8. Anonymous binds are no longer supported in the environment I am using. I need to change my userdb ldap setup to bind. I believe the ldap server does Kerberos (or can) authentication. My users are authenticating using Kerberos or Kerberos/PAM. This needs to stay in place. Can anyone suggest how I might go about changing my setup to work? Hi all, I have Dovecot 1.2.13 installed. My clients ask why Disposition-Notification is requested every time the mail is moved on a new IMAP folder... I take a look into dovecot-keywords file and I see that: 1) I have only one row 0 NonJunk 2) dovecot-keywords file is not present inside every directory. How I can restore normal status? [Dovecot] IMAP messages not being marked read

I recently moved from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14 and consequently to dovecot 2.0.8. Since then, I have observed that messages are not being marked as read in all cases. The general behavior is: 1. Use my mail client to read all unseen messages. All mail folders show no messages unread. 2. Tell mail client to check for new mail. 3. Mail client now says that some folders have new mail (1 or more messages) 4. Clicking on a folder with new mail (say with 6 unread) shows that there are no unread messages. I have observed this behavior using both kmail and squirrelmail so do not believe it is a mail client problem. I have maildir folders to which mail is delivered using procmail recipes directly to the appropriate dovecot folder. In these folders, I notice that the "cur" directory has a matching number of messages that do not have an "S" flag on the end of the file name. Unfortunately, my install of Fedora 14 overlaid the partition with Fedora 13, so I cannot confirm the version of dovecot I was using with no issues. (so very glad I use separate disk and partition for the OS!) I can say that all configuration was in one dovecot.conf file, not the multiple conf.d files I see on Fedora 14. Any assistance on what to troubleshoot next is greatly appreciated! The info about my dovecot is shown below. The maildir's are on local LVM/RAID and not remote.
