Hi, While moving services to a new server, I finally decided to switch from exim + procmail delivery to exim + dovecot-LDA (dovecot 1.2.5). All accounts are virtual - their settings are stored in mysql. This also includes configuring Quota and Sieve. So... there come some doubts: 1. Using "deliver" As I see, deliver uses auth-master socket to retrieve the mailbox settings (especially mailbox location). So, enabling dovecot-auth socket is everything I need to enable dovecot-LDA (apart from the exim configuration, which is explained quite clearly in wiki)? 2. Autocreation of mail folders Is it possible somehow to automatically create folders (like Trash, Sent-mail etc.)? 3. quota and its dict file. map { pattern = priv/quota/storage table = popbox username_field = username value_field = bytes } map { pattern = priv/quota/messages table = quota username_field = username value_field = messages } First - what is the "username_field" here? I'm running multiple domains, so will it be just username@domain? And - if so - is it possible to use the existing tables? I mean, that in my configuration I have a table named "popbox" with fields "local_part", "domain_name" and "quota". It would be perfect to make use of it, but either I could not find the solution or it simply requires an extra table... All, This is slightly OT, but I figure a bunch of folks running IMAP servers should have some strong opinions on the topic. While working on a migration to Dovecot, I had the opportunity to move one account to a server running same. This is an in-house billing department box that 3-4 people share. In theory, this should work well - all the billing folks see the same email, save sent mail to the same place, have the same set of folders available, and concurrent access is no problem. In practice, I'm finding most clients kind of suck. They started with Outlook, and that did not work well. The list of problems is long. They've been using Thunderbird for some time and I'm finding the following issues there: -searches across 2GB+ of mail are painfully slow, since it's all server-side -while the inbox is checked regularly and automatically, other folders are not unless the user manually checks them. getting tbird to do this involves a fairly non-intuitive process, and there's also the issue of making sure everyone actually adds the folders they need to watch -the client does not deal well with large amounts of mail in general - some operations give no feedback, like expanding large sub-folders or doing large copy/move operations. this leads to the user quitting the app and starting the whole process again. dovecot deals with this more gracefully than the old server (Courier), but it's still an issue -offline operation would be handy sometimes, but tbird has no "hybrid" mode, and again, one must select every folder for offline access As much as people like to bash it, OS-X mail.app is basically what I'm looking for. It addresses all the shortcomings in Tbird. If I tell it to make messages available offline, it does that for all boxes. It always checks all my boxes, and when a search is performed it searches on the local copy rather than the server (which is quite polite, IMHO). It works quite well with no internet connection as well. I have about 50,000 messages in it now across 5 accounts and it only rarely gets laggy on me. I want this client on Windows, basically. :) I'm installing Mulberry now, but the manual seems to indicate it also will rely on the server-side search unless it's in offline mode (which has to be toggled - not a good solution). I must say, Dovecot has impressed the hell out of me. I had a chance to deal with the same mailbox in courier and dovecot, and everything is much faster, especially in mail.app and roundcube. Yesterday I upgraded dovecot from 1.1.16 to 1.2.4 using portupgrade I am now getting the following messages in the log file: Sep 23 12:00:41 imap-login: Fatal: Can't load certificate file /etc/ssl/imaps.example.org.csr: The file doesn't contain a certificate. Hi, I just updated to dovecot 1.2.5 on centos5. 1.2.4 did not show this problem. I am going to roll back for the time being but I am willing to do whatever I need to to fix this. This is an x86_64 system. filesystem is ext3. [Dovecot] Solr Plugin make only INBOX able to search

Hi all, I have downloaded and installed dovecot 1.2.4 with Solr plugin. After that, when I try to do some searches the results are weird. All messages that aren't on INBOX folder are ignored. For example, if I have a folder named "Test Folder", when I try to do ". search text <string>" the result is always empty. I tried TEXT, SUBJECT and BODY arguments and none of them returned any email. Any idea of the problem's source? Regards, Rui Carneiro

Hello folks, I'd like your thoughts on the following problem: If one is using v1.2+ IMAP ACLs to allow users to share their mailbox and uses SQL as dictionary backend, every dovecot server would know which ACLs to enforce. But as the wiki states here "http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Shared" dovecot needs access to the other mailbox. Does that automatically mean that one dovecot machine needs to have filesystem access to the all mailboxes that are to be shared? [Dovecot] shared/public mailbox doesn't exist

I have 3 servers running dovecot 1.0.10. 2 of them are configured with a shared/public namespace, but I'm having trouble getting it to work on the third, even with 2 working examples to go by. There's something I'm missing, and I'm hoping that someone here can see/tell what it is. I've created the maildir for sharing: # cd /home/vpopmail/domains/mydomain.com # maildirmake shared # chown -R vpopmail:vchkpw shared Then added the configuration to dovecot.conf: # shared namespace namespace shared { separator = . prefix = shared. location = maildir:/home/vpopmail/domains/mydomain.com/shared } Restarted dovecot: # service dovecot restart When I try to subscribe to the shared namespace though with Outlook, I get: "Failed to subscribe the folder. Server responded: 'Mailbox doesn't exist: shared'." When I try to subscribe with Squirrelmail I get: "ERROR: Could not complete request. Query: SUBSCRIBE "shared" Reason Given: [TRYCREATE] Mailbox doesn't exist: shared" I've tried various combinations of permissions to no avail. Suggestions welcome. [Dovecot] Dovecot versions and index compatibility

I realize these are older versions, but I'd like to know specifically whether dovecot 1.1.6 and dovecot 1.1.8 are compatible index-wise. In particular, if we downgraded from 1.1.8 to 1.1.6 would there be any issues with doing so? I realize there are later versions, but we've tested both of the above extensively, but recently loaded up a server with 1.1.8 and found that the 'imap' process core dumps frequently, so before we pursue later versions we thought it would be best to downgrade to 1.1.6. -- Steven F. [Dovecot] Managesieve displays folder name (dovecot/sieve)

Hi, I'm using Dovecot 1.2.4 with ManageSieve 0.11.9 and Sieve. All works fine but users can subscribe to the folder "dovecot/sieve" which is also displayed in the folders list. protocols = imap managesieve protocol managesieve { listen = ip_address:2000 managesieve_logout_format = bytes ( in=%i : out=%o ) } plugin { sieve=~/Maildir/.dovecot.sieve sieve_dir=/home/vmail/%d/%n/Maildir } In the maildir of the user I see this folders and files: .Drafts/ .Sent cur/ new/ temp/ sieve/ @.dovecot.sieve ingo.sieve The file "ingo.sieve" comes from Horde Ingo because users manage their scripts with ingo.The symlink "dovecot.sieve" is correct and point to ingo.sieve. When users browse their available IMAP folders they'll see a folder "dovecot/sieve". Can this be turned off or restricted with acl's? Without an symlink all folders are displayed normally without the "dovecot sieve" folder. Thanks.

The same result - TB still reports 20GB quota for user foo, the above "echo" command still reports 20971520, but(!), quota is actually unlimited for anyone. When I set some limit in ~foo/Maildir/maildirsize now, same values 20971520) are reported, although the limit works! Looks like LDA (deliver) works fine, but imap_quota plugin is doing something weird. Finally, the question ;-) Where does that value (20971520) come from? Hi, I've a mail server with Postfix and Dovecot, using a LDAP backend to get the users. I've also configure quota rules, and I'm able to get the quota from LDAP. But I need the mails that come from the local domain to bypass the quota rule and be delivered to the users' inbox. Is there any way to do that? [Dovecot] Automatic fd limit changing

I just realized that Dovecot should probably be doing something different with how it handles fd limits. The way it currently works is: 1. It checks some settings and warns at startup if fd limit is lower than what master process might need. 2. For login processes it calculates how many fds are needed and then either increases or decreases it. So it's automatically and silently increasing fd limit for some processes, but not for others. Should it just automatically increase the limits to all processes when necessary, or never increase and just warn that the limit is too low?

I've upgraded mine Dovecot 1.0.15 to 1.2.4 also moved to new Sieve. I have simple sieve rule: if header :contains "Delivered-To" ["bcc(a)bcc.inblock.ru"] { setflag "\\Seen"; } It basically mark my own messages which are saved to Sent folder. When I was on 1.0.15 I never seen unread count in Thunderbird, but suddenly after upgrade I seen unread message in Sent folder just after I've sent message. If I open Sent folder it already marked as read. Me wonder if this is actually Dovecot much faster delivers and reports to MUA there is new unread message or Sieve not perform fast enough?

I'm using a Postfix, Dovecot, MySQL setup with virtual domains. I have mail being delivered through Dovecot LDA working 100%. I'm trying to use sieve to handle vacation messages but dovecot is not reading the .dovecot.sieve file in the users maildir. I have a hunch it has to do with my dovecot-sql query but have had no success with what I found in the forums from Googling. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [Dovecot] IMAP clients suddenly redownload folder headers

We had an issue today with IMAP clients (Thunderbird, Outlook) having to redownload headers for folders. This issue was eerily close to a MySQL database structure change that shouldn't have affected any related queries, however we did notice an event of user CPU % not being reported via SNMP around the same time for the server. There are no entries in our dovecot error log around the outage. We're running Dovecot 1.1.13 with MySQL being used for user and password queries, and Maildir for storage on a fibre channel SAN. However, it is possible for some stores to be on an NFS mount (supporting legacy during migration), which is why there is the nfs options in the below config. I'm wondering if someone could shed light on what could cause this to occur. I imagine it's related to the index cache's, but the lack of any mention in the error logs has me puzzled. Hello, I'm trying to configure my user_attrs using LDAP as the userdb so that dovecot knows what secondary groups a user is a member of. The LDAP backend is an Open Directory implementation, which stores secondary group affiliations as memberUid attributes in cn=groupname,cn=groups,dc=dns,dc=name,dc=server. Hi, I plan on upgrading from 1.1.13 to 1.2.4 using an RPM. I have read the wiki [1] and have a question about the mail_location variable. Currently, in 1.1.13, I use: mail_location = maildir:/var/spool/virtual_mailboxes/%h with virtual mailboxes. However, I am planning to change it to use: home=/var/spool/virtual_mailboxes mail_location = maildir:%h as part of the new configuration. Is that correct or have I misinterpreted the wiki? Hello All, First of all thanks a lot for providing a quality software such as Dovecot. I am having troubles for setting up the config files of OpenBSD's binary package of Dovecot, flavor sieve/mysql. Do you know where some documentation could be found for setting up correctly the .conf (dovecot.conf & dovecot-sql.conf) since it does not even load ("Error in configuration file /etc/dovecot.conf line 871: Unknows setting: args"). I shall understand that the problem lies in dovecot-sql.conf, which is not a file I understand well and can configure correctly, as it seems. Some more docs/infos about this issue could be helpful. Moika, Overnight, I migrated my user-mails from uw-imap to dovecot-maildir. I used the uw2dovecot.pl script to convert all mails and changed exim, too. Receiving mails works fine allready, but nobody can access the usual subscribed folders with thunderbird. Via "subscriptions" I can find the converted folders in a folder called "_" (underline). People getting mad about me as the cannot find their stuff any more in the usual folders. What can I do that they have the converted stuff in the same folders as they had before? Hi Timo, No, I mean, when I try to subscribe folders, I get offered a folder "_" with some subfolders. I do a screenshot, its maybe better to understand. [Dovecot] fixing deleted-to-trash-plugin

Hi, I'm currently trying to make the deleted-to-trash-plugin work with dovecot v1.2.4, without this plugin the trash mailbox is pretty useless with mail clients like Evolution and Outlook, I still can't believe this functionality isn't intergrated into dovecot since it doesn't even influence the operation of other mail clients that do support this option theirselfs (even when turned on, the plugin detects this and doesn't break the client's functionality). I have modified the plugin to run without errorsin 1.2.4, when using a mail client which doesn't support this feature in the client itself, (according to my debug and the mail-log plugin output) everything works, but the mails are deleted as expected but not visible in the Trash box, it looks like they where copied to /dev/null :P (even though the log output makes me think otherwise). Hi, I started experimenting with ACLs and found I could reliably and reproducibly crash the IMAP process when trying to create a subfolder of a folder that has has ACLs set. The folder is called "Sent" with an ACL of "owner lrwstipke". I wanted to be able to have certain folders the the user cannot delete but where subfolders can be created freely. [Dovecot] Dovecot+PAM advice please?

I'm trying to set up an experimental system (which may become production if it ever gets off the ground) and it's not working. The short version: I'm trying to get Dovecot 1.2.4 to authenticate against a customised PAM module. In short, we're using a specialised OTP radius backend. One of my colleagues has coded up a PAM module for this backend. The IMAP service is on HP-UX11.23, IA64. The module is compiles into /usr/lib/security/hpux32 and is called "pam_cached_radius.so.0.0". The entry in /etc/pam.conf is: cached-radius auth required pam_cached_radius.so.0.0 The PAM module compiles OK, and my colleague's test suite (run, both as root and as our local "dovecot" user) works fine. When I use the following options in dovecot.conf: auth default { user = root mechanisms = plain passdb pam { args = cached-radius } userdb passwd { } } it fails leaving only the log entry below in syslog. Hello I occasionally get the following error in dovecot log I've replaced the username by xxxxxxx /user is the user's home directories place, does this means it must be owned by the "mail" group ? Hi, having a nightmare trying to get dovecot working on my SheevaPlug (flash based ARM embedded device). I need to use virtual users, and I need to store all the mail on an external USB HDD (not in home directories which live in the limited flash space). However I can't even log in via telnet. I've followed the Wiki troubleshooting tips, and still no further forward. logging via telnet, I get: "user sheeva BAD Error in IMAP command received by server." the logs show: ubuntu dovecot: User sheeva is missing UID (see mail_uid setting) What do I need to do? I hadn't thought of setting mail_debug, don't know why :) Now I can see more clearly. It seems that ACL files such as "/etc/dovecot/acls/Backup.received" or "/etc/dovecot/acls/Backup.sent" are read, but when accessing the actual mailbox Dovecot looks for a file "/etc/dovecot/acls/received" or "/etc/dovecot/acls/sent". I.e. the mailbox names *without* the namespace prefix. This can't be the desired behaviour, can it? When I create such an ACL file (""/etc/dovecot/acls/sent") the defined restrictions seem to be applied. At least KMail doesn't even offer to "Delete message" anymore. Thunderbird does and messages can apparently be deleted, but they show up again upon reloading the folder. This is probably a Thunderbird issue. Horde/IMP is similar in this regard. The Public namespace however doesn't seem to be given any consideration at all by Dovecot. I can see the namespace root ("Public") in the folder subscription list, but nothing beneath it. Even when I apply the "fix" described in the previous paragraphs I still can't see any of the public folders. The log file doesn't show anything about this either. There are no "dovecot-acl" files at all, anywhere. I want to avoid having to use them, which is why I am trying to get global ACLs to work. The "dovecot-acl-list" files are created in every root directory, i.e. /var/mail/public/dovecot-acl-list, /var/vmail/example.org/username/Maildir/dovecot-acl-list and /var/vmail/example.org/username/Maildir-backup/dovecot-acl-list. All three are empty. So, the second issue (private namespace ACLs) could be a bug in Dovecot, unless I misunderstood how to name ACL files for mailboxes in other private namespaces. The first issue (invisibility of public folders) is still a mystery to me. Ideas? Thanks again for your reply! Hi Everyone, I have a question regarding reverse quota_warnings. I'm building a new setup, and I would like to block sending messages if a person is over his/her quota limit. Although this can be accomplished using a quota_warning script, I can't find how to accomplish the reverse. Has anyone tried to do something like this? Hello all, I'm trying to get dovecot read three different quota_warnings values directly from ldap. [Dovecot] Security holes in CMU Sieve plugin

A recently found security hole in Cyrus Sieve exists also in Dovecot, because Dovecot's Sieve plugin is based on libsieve from Cyrus project. I also found and fixed a few additional buffer overflows that I can't really understand why I hadn't noticed/fixed before. This security hole affects all installations that give their users any kind of ability to modify their Sieve scripts. Even if you give only limited access it might be enough for an attacker. For example forwarding a user's mails to about 100 addresses should do the trick. Since these are buffer overflows for variables in stack, they're very likely exploitable and allow attackers to execute arbitrary code as the user. Note that this security hole doesn't exist in Stephan Bosch's excellent new Sieve plugin for Dovecot v1.2. I encourage everyone to switch to using it as soon as possible. Who knows what other holes still lurk in libsieve. [Dovecot] Sieve and locale (Japanese)

I have setup Dovecot-1.2 'delivery' to use Dovecot's Sieve as well (both versions are latest from dovecot.org) I am curious if sieve can handle Japanese, or locale, in general in the language. In particular, the subject which is encoded even more complicated. if header :contains "subject" ["test", "テスト"] { So if I want to file based on above, test, and tesuto (utf-8). Most Japanese mail is send in iso-2022-jp, will it use iconv to change to utf-8 before the test? Then handle the Subject encoding? (It's also possible to be in EUC-JP, but that is unusual). Hello I have problem with deliver dying with signal 11. I'm using postfix + dovecot devliver. If mailbox have many (100+) redirects in sieve or many other sieve rules deliver died. I have tested this in debian etch + dovecot 1.1.18 (compiled from sources) and debian lenny + dovecot 1.1.13 from backports. Hi, I'm using deliver for storing new mails (nfs). I am currently using dovecot 1.0.7-7.el5 on 32bit centos. Plan is to upgrade to 1.2.4 using http://atrpms.net/dist/el5/dovecot/ rpms. My config is very minimal: protocols = imaps imap ssl_cert_file = /etc/pki/tls/certs/server.cert ssl_key_file = /etc/pki/tls/private/server.key ssl_cipher_list = HIGH:MEDIUM:+TLSv1:!SSLv2:+SSLv3 mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir protocol imap { } protocol pop3 { } auth default { mechanisms = plain login passdb pam { } userdb passwd { } user = root socket listen { client { path = /var/spool/postfix/private/auth mode = 0660 user = postfix group = postfix } } } Just wondering if 1.0 to 1.2.4 is safe, or do I need to upgade to 1.1 first?
