Oh, that was fun. Making the change below resulted in mail getting deferred with "Fatal: destination user parameter (-d user) not given" ... which apparently is caused by running deliver as 'root'! (http://archive.netbsd.se/?ml=dovecot-general&a=2008-02&t=6558196) So I am back to: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root dovecot 4044835 2009-04-03 13:52 deliver which doesn't produce the error and delivers the mail. Still no joy with Postfix+Spamassassin+Dovecot. This is unbelievably hard to get going. I started with the default installations of everything on a brand new system. I only made minimal changes as indicated by the docs. Then I made small changes as indicated by this and other mailing lists. I always reverted back to the original defaults between each effort. Now I'm just stumped. I'm not a newbie ... I've been administrating public servers for over 10 years, and using and working on the Internet since 1968! This is just the first time I've tried to use Postfix+Spamassassin+Dovecot. Previous installations have all used Sendmail+Spamassassin+Dovecot with zero issues. I want the benefits of using the Maildir storage system, but the past two weeks of trying to get this going are making me question whether that benefit is worth it. Can anyone please post their successful Postfix+Spamassassin+Dovecot setup for me to learn from? I would really appreciate it. I've been messing with this for too long, now, and I'm blind to whatever's wrong. Or I'm simply being dense. Either way, I need help with a common issue. I'm trying to get Postfix+Spamassassin+Dovecot going on Fedora 10. (I'll get back to the global Sieve thingy soon, but I need to get this going, first.) When using the simple: mailbox_command = /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver everything is cool, except there's no Spamassassin involvement, obviously. The problem shows itself when the Spamassassin user hands off to the recipient user and Deliver + the recipient user tries to access /var/run/dovecot/auth-master. [Dovecot] uw-imap to dovecot conversion tool

i plan to switch from uw-imap to dovecot on a couple of medium size systems and so i have written a conversion tool that understands mbox, mbx, and mix formats and converts to maildir format while trying to preserve uid info, keywords, flags, subscriptions, etc. it seems to work for me now, but i think some feedback might be useful. so if you have some files to convert and a desire to help, please download: http://www.spiretech.com/~joey/uw2dovecot.pl and give it a whirl. it is very sparsely documented right now but isn't too complex (yet). by default it copies your INBOX, mail dir, and .mailboxlist info into Maildir. those filenames can be overridden. i'd suggest running with -v to watch it. it requires that the output directory not exist before starting, so it should be relatively safe. it doesn't lock any files being read, so an active uw tree could cause it indigestion. it's designed to run while inbound mail and pop/imap sessions are disabled. it uses a few perl modules, but they should be standard with perl itself. it does do everthing in memory, so the largest message you have will be in memory and will be duplicated at least once as crlf pairs are replaced. also, this assumes you'll change the uid format in dovecot.conf to %08Xu%08Xv so that it doesn't change uids for the clients. send feedback to me and cc the list if you feel it useful. once this is stable, i'll get it added to the dovecot wiki.

My mail server consumed all of its configured file table slots and started returning ENFILE ("Too many open files in system") for many operations. This wreaked havoc with dovecot-1.1.13. Here are some areas where dovecot should detect and more gracefully handle ENFILE error returns: 1. Deliver should report an error more helpful than "Unknown internal error" when fdatasync_path fails: deliver(user): Apr 10 14:53:20 Error: fdatasync_path(/Volumes/MailData/ user/new) failed: Too many open files in system deliver(user): Apr 10 14:53:20 Info: msgid=<...>: save failed to INBOX: BUG: Unknown internal error 2. Index files should not be fscked when they could not be opened due to ENFILE: Error: IMAP(user): open() failed with index file /Volumes/MailData/ user/.Deleted Messages/dovecot.index: Too many open files in system Warning: IMAP(user): fscking index file /Volumes/MailData/ user/.Deleted Messages/dovecot.index 3. Dovecot should not crash when mail transaction logs become corrupt, or appear to have become corrupt due to ENFILE. [Dovecot] Issue with converting users from cyrus user.domain.com

I have been using cyrus for the past 6 years, but it is a pain to config. So ... I just installed dovecot 1.0.15 on a new debian 4r7 box. In cyrus we were using usernames as "user.domain.tld". In dovecot I realize I can: auth_username_translation = .@ But this converts user.domain.tld to user@domain@tld which of course fails. Is there a regex or something I can apply to pull this off? I also tried auth_username_format = %n.%d But I think this does the opposite of what I need. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance P.

deliver is the binary name. but it's configured inside protocol lda {} section. This is getting annoying, any thoughts on what would be a good unifying name? a) deliver binary, protocol deliver {} b) lda binary, protocol lda {} c) dovecot-lda binary, protocol lda {} d) mda binary, protocol mda {} e) dovecot-mda binary, protocol mda {} f) something else? In any case protocol lda {} would work for a while longer for backwards compatibility. c) and e) choices also makes me think if e.g. imap and imap-login should be called dovecot-imap and dovecot-imap-login instead. People have had trouble finding them since ps|grep dovecot doesn't find them..

tonight dovecot 1.2beta4 crashed for the first time with an assertion failed. See attached log file. Around that time nobody was logged in into dovecot and there were no other mail deliveries going on. The mail in question should have been delivered to three recipients, one got the mail, the two others not. There is unfortunately no core dump file. I'm trying to restrict imap logins to our internal network for several users, but this breaks dovecot delivery too Even if i set allow_nets to NULL or 0.0.0.0/0 deliver exits with "Error: Auth lookup returned failure" i'm running it as 'command = /usr/lib/dovecot/deliver -e -d "$local_part@$domain" -s' in exim.conf i guess delivery lookups should be independent of allow_nets i'm using dovecot 1.1.13 + managesieve patch -- Pavel

Hello Until now I used Postfix in combination with Procmail and Dovecot. I am convinced that the Dovecot Sieve plugin is a much more elegant solution. So I changed to Postfix + Dovcecot Deliver + Dovecot + Sieve. If I understood correctly I cannot call other applications within a Sieve script. Until now I used Procmail to filter Spam Messages with SpamAssassin. Is there a possibility to filter spam messages before/after Dovecot deliver. I want to use the users .spammassassin user_prefs located in their home folder. I suppose if I use a content filter in Postfix this is to early, since the user is not known at that moment. Hi, I have just tested the dbox format mailbox, it works fine. But when I create dir through imap with `create` command, it only creates the dir onder ~/dbox/mailboxes, such as ~/dbox/mailboxes/newfolder. There was no `dbox-Mails` dir created. Hi all, I use a local dovecot server which is synchronized with my two imap accounts using OfflineIMAP. This works very nice and is highly usable. But one thing I'd like to improve is the slow IMAP search. When I search for a string in the subjects of all messages in a mailbox using some mail client, dovecot seems to grep all the messages in there. Hello Due to lack of disk space on local disks I need to move all our imap folders to a NFS volume ( NetAPP filer ) I have a question about Dovecot indexes , is it better to remove all of them before copying folders to the NFS volume and let Dovecot rebuild all indexes when users restart to access to their imap folders ? I want to upgrade a Dovecot installation from 0.99.14 to 1.1.15, so I had a look at the following wiki article: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading?action=show&redirect=UpgradingDovecot The article http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.0 says something about .customflags -> dovecot-keywords and .subscriptions -> subscriptions change/conversion: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.0#Subscriptions http://wiki.dovecot.org/Upgrading/1.0#Keywords Do I understand it correctly that when directly upgrading from 0.99 to 1.1, Dovecot does the subscriptions renaming but not the keywords renaming and conversion, but that when I manually rename all .customflags files to dovecot-keywords, it does the format conversion of that file automatically? Is there anything else what's important to note for such an upgrade? [Dovecot] Multiple use of the same LDAP attribute

Hi, we've found a weird bug (?) in Dovecot 1.1.11. Since day and age we've been running dovecot for our student mailserver, getting the location of the mailbox from a LDAP directory. We allow login and LDA with both full mail address and an internal username, so the mailbox directory is based on a LDAP attribute user_attrs = xxxMailbox=mail=maildir:/home/mailstore/%U$/Maildir:INDEX=/home/mailstore/indexes/%1U$/%U$, uidNumber=vmail, gidNumber=vmail, xxxMailQuota=quota_rule2=*:storage=%$B this worked just fine until we introduced sieve, which made us realize we did not have the home directory set at all. The obvious and easy fix (we thought) was to set the home directory based on the xxxMailbox variable as well: user_attrs = xxxMailbox=mail=maildir:/home/mailstore/%U$/Maildir:INDEX=/home/mailstore/indexes/%1U$/%U$, uidNumber=vmail, gidNumber=vmail, xxxMailQuota=quota_rule2=*:storage=%$B, xxxMailbox=home=/home/mailstore/%U$ unfortunately, after this trivial change hell froze over, because suddenly the mail variable was not set at all anymore, and since we had set mail_location = maildir:/home/mailstore/%Uu/Maildir:INDEX=/home/mailstore/indexes/%1Un/%Un (based on username) it was suddenly delivered into the wrong folder (based on the supplied username, not on the LDAP attribute). According to wiki.dovecot.org/AuthDatabase/LDAP/PasswordLookups this should work, and indeed when starting dovecot it does not complain about: 'CRAM-MD5 mechanism can't be supported with given passdbs' Instead it starts right up, but when a thunderbird client connects and tries authenticating with CRAM-MD5 it fails. In the wiki page 'PasswordLookups' it mentions: Supports non-plaintext authentication mechanisms (if returning plaintext/properly hashed passwords). I've already verified that this works correctly with plaintext (CLEARTEXT in slapd.conf), but I really want to store the passwords in LDAP using some hash. Why doesn't LDAP-MD5 work as advertised? [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.1.11 failing to accept SSL/TLS connections

Greetings - We are running Dovecot 1.1.11 on our servers and have been gradually migrating people off our old (UW-based) systems onto the new (Dovecot-based) ones. As a result the new systems are seeing more connections from more people. We have started seeing problems reported by users of our webmail service that they are getting an error indicating the webmail software (Prayer) has failed to establish an IMAP connection using TLS to Dovecot. Investigations show it is not just the webmail service that is affected but all mail clients: it's just other clients retry the connection, whereas Prayer fails the login and shows the error message: TLS/SSL failure for username.imap.york.ac.uk: SSL negotiation failed It seems to be related to one of Dovecot's imap-login processes getting a lot of file descriptors in use. We initially spawn off 10 imap-login processes and have each handling 256 connections. Full "dovecot -n" at the end of the message, but the relevant settings here are: login_process_size = 64 login_process_per_connection = no login_processes_count = 10 login_max_processes_count = 128 login_max_connections = 256 We have grown to suspect it is to do with one of the imap-login processes having a large number of files open. Killing the process seems to get rid of the problem. For example currently we have 11 imap-login processes running, one of which has 518 open files -- process 12436 in the list below. I suspect that, as in previous times we've encountered the problem, killing this process will alleviate the problem. (I'll be doing this later on this evening.) It is slightly odd that the imap-login processes have a very skewed distribution of open files, almost as if the algorithm for allocating connections to a process favours some over others. For example the current counts of open files are: Pid = Open files count 12430 = 42 26818 = 237 12431 = 90 12433 = 12 12438 = 304 12437 = 106 12435 = 190 12432 = 14 12436 = 518 12434 = 32 12429 = 12 Process 12436 was one of the 10 imap-login processes initially created back on March 3rd. (Process 26818 was the additional imap-login process spawned a little later on March 4th.) Likewise the output of the pfiles command on process 12436 (which is the one I believe to be problematic) indicates its limit still has some available -- I'm guessing Dovecot has reduced the limit down to 533 from the 10128 set in the startup script: Current rlimit: 533 file descriptors We originally saw this problem with Dovecot 1.0.3 which we were running up until a couple of weeks ago. From there I upgraded first to 1.0.15 and then to 1.1.11. I'd hoped that upgrading would fix the problem: I see it has been mentioned before on the list, but not for a year or two. [Dovecot] Prohibit removing INBOX

Hello list, I'm using dovecot 1.1.11 and I'm going to prohibit users to remove their INBOX and some other directories in the mailbox root. I tried symlinks like: /var/mail/.../INBOX/dovecot-acl -> /etc/dovecot/acls/INBOX/.DEFAULT /var/mail/.../dovecot-acl -> /etc/dovecot/acls/.DEFAULT But I think the symlink won't help because they doesn't change anything. And even with the symlinks its not possible to remove directories under IBOX. The documentation says: > If a mailbox has both global and per-mailbox ACL file, both of them > are read and the ACLs are merged. If there are any conflicts: > * v1.0 and v1.1: The per-mailbox ACL file overrides global ACL file. As far I can see it the documentation says nothing about merging ACLs of subdirs. But it seems the given behavior is not wanted by the dovecot design, because it seems it should be possible to override ACLs for subdirs, also give more permissions than the upper dirs. Is this a dovecot failure, do I miss something or is it really wanted by dovecot this way? My MUA (Evolution) says: > Cannot delete folder "INBOX/test". > Because "IMAP command failed: Permission denied". It unsubscribes the folder but it not able to remove it. [Dovecot] Dovecot, LVS and the issues I have with it.

We run around 5 dovecot (debian etch 1.0.rc15) POP/IMAP 'nodes' using the LVS load balancer and an NFS based SAN. it works pretty well. I love the robustness of load balancing POP/IMAP. We do a reasonable amount of throughput through these especially at peak times pushing our SAN to around 1.5k IOP/s We currently have two issues with this setup. One of which is NFS index corruption issues we get due to NFS/dovecot locking. Basically the UUID list or a .index gets corrupt. This causes a full re-indexing of the mailbox / broken mailbox until i delete the indexes. In the UUID lists case the symptom tends to effect use who use POP rather than IMAP and insist on keeping messages on the server. Because it's corrupt it gets rebuilt one way or the other and the users email client proceeds to redownload the entire mailbox again until he remarks them to be saved. This tends to annoy the user a lot. After a bit of testing we do however expect this to be fixed by version 1.1. However if anyone has any comments on this I would certainly be interested. The other issue is a little tricky to describe or even log effectively. Occasionally a node basically receives more connections than it is able to handle. The connection count goes through the roof for that node. It will go up way beyond 150 dovecot authentication threads and 100 or so active POP/IMAP dovecot threads. The IO_wait/cpu and memory usage also tends to be spiking at this point. The server gets to the tipping point where it can no longer serve it's POP/IMAP requests fast enough compared to the number of connections it's getting. I'd be fine with this but this creates some less than desirable symptoms: 1. We obviously reach the auth thread cap eventually so any new auth requests basically get refused by the server. To the user this is a seen as an outlook/mail client re-auth pop-up request. This annoys them. Ideally if the server stops accepting auth requests it should fall off our load balancer until it can consistently accept them again. Since the LVS detects a node fail by whether the tcp port is still open this doesn't happen, since dovecot keeps the port open. This is obviously more an LVS issue and not for this mailing list I expect unless anyone has any config tweaking tips here? 2. Now here's my real gripe. Dovecot does not handle running out resources very gracefully at all in our setup. It does start killing threads after a while. I get multiple *"dovecot: child 17989 (login) killed with signal 9". *I'm not exactly sure what's going on here because after this all I can see is the machine totally out of memory and the kernel starts killing absolutely everything. All services are killed (including ssh etc..) and I plug a monitor into the server and find the last few lines of the console listing init and other rather important things having just been killed. At this point it is a case of power cycling the server and all is back to normal again. I imagine there's not a huge amount of people using dovecot in this way. But anyone got any recommendations here? I really like using dovecot in this setup it handles it pretty well and the redundancy and functionality options it provides have been invaluable. Neil

Is anyone here using a global Sieve file that handles messages for an entire server with many users? I understand and use local Sieve files, but I would like to learn more about how to set up Sieve to filter ALL incoming messages using a single file. I would love to read about how you managed to get it working. I'm running Fedora 10 with Postfix 2.5.5 and Dovecot 1.2.rc2. Thanks for any insight! James

I was hoping to finally get shared libdovecot.so and libdovecot-storage.so libraries for v1.3, so Sieve (and maybe others) could link against them. But I'm running into trouble getting it to compile in Solaris 10. [Dovecot] v1.3 plugin locations

It's getting more and more annoying to have separate plugin directories for lda, pop3 and imap. Currently all the plugins are installed into $lib/dovecot/ and then symlinked to the lda, pop3, imap directories. The original reason was that v0.99 just loaded everything in those directories since there was no mail_plugins setting. But then there are things like expire-tool and convert-tool (and the upcoming doveadm) that don't load plugins at all, even though they probably should. Adding just more directories to them seems to be pointless. Also SQL plugins are shared by dovecot-auth and dict and those would need symlinking.. And in future you might want to load SQL plugins to e.g. imap process. So, I was planning on just putting everything into $lib/dovecot/. expire-tool etc. would use mail_plugins setting that wasn't inside protocol {}. So for example: mail_plugins = quota protocol lda { mail_plugins = quota sieve } protocol imap { mail_plugins = quota imap_quota } protocol pop3 { # defaults to mail_plugins=quota above, no need to set it explicitly } That leaves auth and dict.. I was considering adding new auth_plugins and dict_plugins settings, but that might make it more difficult to start using distro-compiled Dovecot where sql, ldap, etc. are in plugins. So perhaps the auth/ and dict/ directories can stay and contain symlinks. But the $lib/dovecot/sql/ directory could go away and the sql plugins be stored just in $lib/dovecot/ among everything else. Any thoughts?

[Dovecot] Compile and configure Solr plugin

Hi all, I'm having some kind of troubles on Solr's integration. I configured Dovecot with the Solr argument (--with-solr) and everything proceeded just fine. But, when I started Dovecot I got this error: Plugin fts_solr not found from directory /usr/lib64/dovecot/modules/imap Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf In fact, there is no Solr plugin in that directory. So I tried to make a symbolic link from where the compiled Solr plugin was to this directory: ln -s /usr/local/lib/dovecot/lib21_fts_solr_plugin.so And now I have the following error: dlopen(/usr/lib64/dovecot/modules/imap/lib21_fts_solr_plugin.so) failed: /usr/lib64/dovecot/modules/imap/lib21_fts_solr_plugin.so: undefined symbol: mailbox_get_virtual_box_patterns Couldn't load required plugins Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf I'm missing some steps in this installation for sure, do anyone have any clue? [Dovecot] Modified websieve for use with dovecot

In order to let users construct a sieve filter using a GUI I have taken websieve.pl from Alain Turbide (for use with Cyrus) and modified it to work with dovecot. In order to get it working quickly I have removed all the code I did not need (e.g. ldap support, password authentication) and coded Kerberos5 auth (via GSSAPI or SASL) in. I understand that this makes the work mostly useless to others. As however the dovecot adaptations were done by removing internally used perl packages by ones on CPAN such as Mail::IMAPClient and Net::Managesieve that part of the code should be of a broader interest. If someone is interested to have a look or even wants to help make it again a more universal tool I have put the code on ftp://ftp-zeuthen.desy.de/pub/unix/mail/websieve.pl Current status: I have tested the creation and modification of sieve rules, inspecting and setting ACL's (dovecot 1.2), displaying quota and creating folders. I have no idea if this is of interest to anyone but it might save you some work .. I created a script that will install Dovecot 1.2-rc2 (currently) to a CentOS5.2 installation complete with Stephan Bosch's Managesieve, postfix, virtual users, LDAP, and LDAP personal address books. Oh right! .. and Squirrelmail plus various plugins (change LDAP password, LDIF import, Avelsieve). Also self-signed certificates are created from data supplied in a configuration file. I've stuck the required files here: http://www.nightstorm.com/~bam/CentOS5.2/ I did an install to a 32 bit CentOS so it has worked at least once on that architecture. It *should* work on a 64 bit as well (I provide the RPM) but I've not personally tested it. I am by no means an expert on any of this stuff (particularly the security aspects), so I'd certainly welcome any suggestions for ways to improve on the installation, the script, life, the universe, ... ;-) - Bruce
