I am working on updating the Shupp toaster, http://shupp.org/toaster/ a set of files and instructions for installing qmail, vpopmail, qmailadmin and squirrelmail. Two of my most important goals are switching the imap program from courier to Dovecot, and closer integration with OpenSuSE. (Which I run my mail servers on.) To follow the style of the toaster I need a place where I can obtain the init.d script from http://wiki.dovecot.org/DovecotInit I would prefer to have permission to host the file myself so I don't have to worry about creating patches if there is ever a need for my run file to be different from yours. If that is not acceptable, would you please either provide a URL where I can download just the run file, or include it in the distribution. Thanks, Rick

[Dovecot] Warnings compiling on OpenBSD 4.4 i386

Hi, probably just nothing to worry about, but I get the following warnings when building 1.1.7 on OpenBSD 4.4 on i386. If I remove the --with-bsdauth config option, they all disappear. [Dovecot] convert non-standard mbox to maildir

Hi, Let me start with wishing you all the best for this new year, and I hope we'll see a lot of new features and not so much new bugs ;-) I'm trying to convert a number of PSTs to maildir. Just plain drag&drop in Outlook doesn't work (gives a very cryptic error message in a certain folder, but that folder is perfectly all right), and using the import option also barfs when it's not even half-way through the PST. So, I took aid4mail and it converted the PST to mbox wihtout any problem. But now, I have a directory structure, filled with mbox mailboxes. Like: INBOX INBOX/mailbox INBOX/subfolder INBOX/subfolder/mailbox INBOX/subfolder/subsubfolder INBOX/subfolder/subsubfolder/mailbox INBOX/subfolder2 INBOX/subfolder2/mailbox etc. This differs from normal mbox setup, but given the fact that there are both folders AND messages below inbox, this is indeed the only useful way to do it. But now I cannot convert this to maildir using either dovecot or mb2md, since it's not the usual mbox setup. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Maarten

[Dovecot] Unkillable imap process?

Hi, Not sure if this is relevant but having been running dovecot 1.1.4 for a long time (without any problem) I recently upgraded to 1.1.7 when I switched to SuSE 11.1 This is just running on my home server and it's a fairly standard fetchmail-procmail-dovecot setup. However I recently had an incident which I cannot quite explain. I suspect it could be a possible disk problem but I did run a SMART check and the disks and HW seems ok. The mail store is mounted on a separate partition using ext3 fs What happened was that I noticed that the load on my server went through the roof and that the imap process was hogging 100% of the CPU and it had been running so for over an hour. Before this happened I had just setup a new laptop with Thunderbird as the mail client and had just done a off-line sync of my whole mail store (~1.5GB). So for a short time the dovecot server would have been under maximum load. I tried to recover by gracefully shutting down dovecot and when that didn't stop the imap process I first tried to be nice by sending it the TERM signal and when that didn't do it, the KILL signal. However, I was not able to stop the imap process. I then decided to recycle the server and initiated a shutdown. However, not even that was able to complete (since the shutdown process seemed to be hanging on not being able to stop the imap process). In the end I was (for the first time in over 6 years) forced to use the hard reset button on the server. I do realize that this is almost impossible to diagnose, but does anyone now in general what could possible cause the imap process to so completely be locked up that it is impossible to even shut it down? [Dovecot] NFS, IDLE, and index locking

Hi, I'll try to keep short. My primary question is what, in people's experience, are the best configuration settings for to avoid potential NFS cache locking issues in an interesting heterogeneous environment? We appear to have a workaround for some locking issues we have seen, which is turning off IDLE. Upgrading our version of dovecot from 1.1.4 is likely to address some core issues, but I want to get the system setup in tune first. There are some things in our setup that seem dumb, and I would like to make sure they are dumb. As far as our environment goes, it isn't unusual for our users to connect with multiple different clients from multiple locations. Some of these clients behave well, and some not so well. In addition we have multiple distributed servers with multiple instances. Generally the connection from one of their clients/desktops goes to the same server but their different desktops may connect to different servers. If anyone has a similar enough environment, do you find it better to have the hard link setting off or is it better for you to turn it on? The attribute cache is the default (60 seconds) which works well enough in a polling setting but may be a problem with IDLE (30 second check). Do you find it better to bump up the IDLE check interval or drop the attribute cache? Our cache and maildir are on separate NFS volumes so we can change one without changing the other. Our tcp timeout setting is too long (it is the default). Do you find 180-300 seconds more reasonable? ---Jack To give some context, we have a handful of users with intermittent caching locking where the dovecot.index.cache file would simply not update. One of our internal people managed to get this problem when he was using pine (non-IDLE) with gnubiff (IDLE) from the same desktop. We haven't had any alarms since taking the brute force approach of turning off IDLE. Unfortunately other projects are inhibiting my capacity for additional debugging at this time. Also, it isn't clear to me that we will learn anything useful since the servers do not appear to be tuned and they are only running dovecot 1.1.4. Problem: Using MySQL storage for the user and password db with MD5-CRYPT hashes, Dovecot fails to successfully authenticate when the MD5-CRYPT or MD5 settings are specified as default_pass_scheme in dovecot-mysql.conf. Dovecot /does/ successfully authenticate against MD5-CRYPT hashes when default_pass_scheme is set to CRYPT, which according to the docs should be DES encryption. (I do not know whether or not CRYPT actually works with DES hashes.) I am positive that I am using MD5-CRYPT hashes, as I have dropped in hashes from a Qmail/Vpopmail vpasswd file and they work with the CRYPT setting in Dovecot, as do hashes generated using htpasswd -nmb. I'm really racking my brain trying to figure this one out here. I am running a pop3 server for remote offices on CentOS 5.2. [Dovecot] Password field limitations

Hi, I've searched the WIKI for this information but seem unable to find anything about it. What limitations are imposed on the password for IMAP/POP3 users? I've had a customer saying they can't use passwords which contain "." or ":", and some seem to have problems when the password is 8 characters. I use PLAIN authentication, passwords are stored in a MySQL database. Thanks a lot -- Tom Sommer

[Dovecot] automounting home dirs

Hi, I'm running dovecot-1.0.10 on a Solaris 10 server with home dirs automounted over NFS. I have set the mail_location configuration option so that nothing should be written to a user's home dir over NFS but, as far as I can tell, dovecot still by default tries to chdir to a user's home dir when reading mail, although this is not required. This creates additional unnecessary load on a heavily-loaded fileserver and generally slows everything down and creates an unnecessary dependency. Is there a way to prevent dovecot from causing the home dirs to be mounted? I found this thread: http://markmail.org/message/umywuppl3vvzfe4p#query:dovecot%20mount%20home%2… which discusses the same problem, but it's quite old and there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer other than hacking the passwd file or the code. Is there a more elegant solution? Hello, the vacation module of Sieve works fine for me, but the sender name (From Header) is always the e-mail address. I'm unable to add a name here. I'd love to have my realname in the From: field. Did I miss something? :-) Thanks, Jakob

Hi dovecot list, I'm looking for a possibility to log a moved (or a deleted mail). For example, I have a mailbox, and I read it in IMAP. I have a mail in INBOX. I want to move it to Folder. I want to have this action logged in my dovecot log file (or an other file). Is it possible? I read this: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Logging and I don't find any informations about it. I'm enabling digest-md5 authentication with "user(a)example.com" username and plain-text passwords stored in a MySQL database. What should the password field contain in order to work with digest-md5? Hi dovecot@. I use the last dovecot (1.1.7) with sieve-plugin. All works perfectly. However, I would like to use a "copy" function. All mail sent by "toto(a)domain.tld" have to be copied in a folder (copy, and not move). So, I don't want to use a fileinto rule. I see in http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sieve there is a copy function (1.1 only). A rule like: if header :contains "From" "toto(a)domain.tld" { copy "test"; stop; } does not work. I have nothing into my deliver or dovecot log. However, if I replace copy by fileinto, it works. But I want to copy the email, not move it. I don't find any examples in the Internet or the wiki. Hello, I was wondering is I could use MySQL as storage only..? Meaning that no user information, other than the obvious email address associated with an specific email so that each email can be showed to the right user, will be stored in a MySQL database instead of /home/vmail/DOMAIN/<user> Would I get any advantages.? Hi, Is there a way to associate a user's the login (imap-login) process with the user's 'imap [' process? We are trying to lock down an issue to make sure we full understand it. /proc and shared memory tools weren't particular useful. Just for context, we are having an intermittent locking index cache locking issue that appears to impact only a subset of our users. The index files are on NFS. It may be fixed by a dovecot patch (we are at 1.1.3), adjusting our tcp_timeout on the servers, upgrading out circa 2000 load balancer, the type and configuration of the multiple simultaneous persistent clients that user is using, etc. lslk, alert logs, strace, testing the most recent 1.1.X version, and file mtime is giving us some information but we want to make everything is covered. However, one of our executives has her heart set on being able to get her mail via POP3. [Dovecot] Move mail in Maildir without IMAP

I set-up some spam/ham learning folders where a crontab entry learns the mail and them moves it do a different Maildir folder. Unfortunately, since it has a different dovecot-keywords file, any imap flags get changed to unknown-0, unknown-1 etc. I tried the following, but it didn't work mv "${src_ham}"/cur/* "$dest_ham"/new/ cp "${src_ham}"/dovecot-keywords "${dest_ham}" Is there a simple way to do this correctly without going through IMAP? And are there any more serious consequences of moving mail like this, with dovecot imap running on top.

HiWe need to track exactly when our users read messages. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to figure out how we can achieve this with Dovecot. Then I saw the mail_log plugin.Is it possible to extend the plugin to also log system flag changes? This would be great, because then we could see in the log files when the Seen flag has been set. Changes in user defined flags would also be interesting to track.I know this would create a lot of log entries, but for us this wouldn't be a problem. [Dovecot] "nopassword" extra field useless with LDAP passdb

Hi, We are trying to implement a highly secure mail server with user authentication restricted to SSL certificates only (not using passwords at all). Still, user information is stored in a LDAP directory. In this configuration LDAP is used to check whether the user is registered (and probably supply quota and other info), and actual authentication is done by SSL layer. According to wiki, a "nopassword" extra field should be supplied, together with empty password. But there is no way to return an empty password from LDAP, as LDAP simply does not allow "empty attributes"; if an attribute is present, it is not empty. Supplying empty password as a static field (like this: pass_attrs = uid=user,=password=,nopassword) works an odd way, allowing empty password only, not "any password", and most MUAs (including our target Thunderbird) do not allow empty passwords. [Dovecot] OT: Looking for a robust IMAP client

This weekend we had a runaway email endless loop. When it was killed after 18 hours, my inbox had 135,000 messages in it...there were two messages that were being endlessly sent and bounced and I'm on the postmaster alias. Thunderbird was able to do a mass select of one of the two messages, and deleted 65,000, but after that it locked up. I ended up firing up Pine to do the final 65,000...whereas TBird had had mulitple imap sessions (and failed), Pine only had one and did the job. And even after I had done the mass delete of the other 65,000 and the inbox was down to 2000 messages, TBird was still hiding under the covers and telling me there were still 135,000 messages. In the end, I had to kill the TBird profile for that account and recreate it. Is there a simple robust IMAP client to replace Pine (which I *think* is no longer supported)? GUI or TTY session? I'm wondering if there is something we can tell users to use when Things Are Dire. My limited testing shows that code works, but I'm not sure that defined privilege set is permissive enough for dovecot. Unfortunately I have no root access to our Solaris servers to really test it. [Dovecot] Dovecot imap processes pinning CPU

In recent days, dovecot's "imap" processes keep getting stuck. Each time I check my server (running dovecot 1.1.7) there's a bunch of "imap" processes (sometimes 2 of them, sometimes 4, sometimes 6) that are using all of the box's CPU. And worse, there's no way to kill the processes either (neither kill -15 or kill -9 works), which means that I wind up having to reboot the box every time this happens. REALLY irritating. I don't normally even *see* the imap processes in htop, as I think they're pretty short lived. And I'm not sure what they're looping trying to do. My debugging skills on Linux are a bit weak, and so I don't know how to look at the process and see what it's doing. Also, not sure what's changed on my system to cause this, as this is definitely a recent problem. Maybe the upgrade to Thunderbird 2.0.0.18 (since I usually use T'Bird to access my email). I don't seem to run into this problem when I use Squirrelmail. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be? Or, if not, then suggestions on how I might be able to debug the situation myself? Hi Guys, I am using the SSL Client Certificate authentication method for my Dovecot instance, however rather then just requiring the client certificate it also prompts me for my user password. My certificate was securely generated on a smart card and is passphrase protected so I would like to stop having to enter my certificate passphrase and my user password to collect my mail. With just one user, on a virtual hosting system with several hundred users spread across a couple of dozen domains, there is the following error, repeated a couple of times a second without variation, when the user tries to connect with Thunderbird to read his mail: dovecot: Panic: IMAP(*******(a)****.co.uk): file mail-index-view.c: line 265 (view_lookup_seq_range): assertion failed: (first_uid <= last_uid) Any help would be appreciated. Hello, I downloaded the dovecot-autocreate-0.1-4.6.i586.rpm made by Time Sirainen from opensuse.org and I am getting the following messages in my logs: Module is for different version 1.0.15: /usr/lib/dovecot/modules/imap/lib90_autocreate_plugin.so Couldn't load required plugins They appear for every attempt to autocreate a folder. This is assuming that the IMAP client uses FETCH ENVELOPE command, not all do. Note that it doesn't affect versions older than v1.1.4. + dovecot -n and -a now prints some system information at the top. + More error/debug message logging improvements. - pop3-login: Fixed assert-crash if a client sent USER+PASS+USER+PASS commands in the same IP packet. - Parsing an invalid message address like "From: (" caused an assert-crash in v1.1.4 and v1.1.5. - Folding whitespace wasn't handled correctly inside quoted-strings, causing some messages to be parsed incorrectly. - mbox: Fixed saving messages that begin with a valid From_-line.

Hi, I have just installed dovecot and offlineimap on my laptop for syncing with my gmail, and reading in gnus, as outlined in this article: http://sachachua.com/wp/2008/05/08/geek-how-to-use-offlineimap-and-the-dove… I am using Debian Etch, and I am the only user. The only change I made to the default dovecot.conf file was to set: mail_location = maildir:~/MailDir I read that gnus doesn't handle Maildir very well, so I need to connect directly to dovecot, and this is what I have specified in my offlinemap conf file: [Repository Local] type = IMAP remotehost = localhost port = 143 remoteuser = me remotepass = secret I want to sync my other online email accounts aswell. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Thanks.

Hello, i have following problems using dovecot-antispam plugin (Dovecot >1.1.3, FreeBSD 8.0-Current, dovecot-antispam 1.0/1.1) dovecot-antispam compiled using dspam-exec/mailtrain, with/wo debugging (i've tried all possibilities) When i try to move message to SPAM folder (using dspam-exec backend) i'm getting IMAP error: antispam signature not found and in dovecot logs: Nov 23 23:44:24 freebsd dovecot: IMAP(mr): Next message unexpectedly lost from 2708619 Using mail backend gives this error too(only IMAP error changes: failed to read mail beggining). Commenting out following code in mbox_read_from_line function (in src/lib-storage/index/mbox/istream-raw-mbox.c) helped and plugin was working correctly, but only with Dovecot <=1.1.3. if (stream->istream.v_offset - rstream->hdr_offset + new_pos > rstream->mail_size) { /* istream_raw_mbox_set_next_offset() used invalid cached next_offset? */ i_error("Next message unexpectedly lost from %"PRIuUOFF_T, rstream->hdr_offset + rstream->mail_size); rstream->eof = TRUE; rstream->corrupted = TRUE; rstream->istream.istream.stream_errno = EINVAL; stream->pos = 0; return -1; } Now, with versions >1.1.3 this won't helps and plugin fails. Hello, I use the debian packages from http://xi.rename-it.nl/debian/ version 1.1.7-0~auto+17 If I put a sieve script into /home/vmail/sieve-scripts/test.de/test.sieve it is used, so cmusieve works. If I connect to the server using my username as in the text file i can not access my Maildirs as %d gets not replaced. If i user username(a)domain.com the %d is correctly replaced. But, how would i configure my mail_location, to take the domain part from the server name i connect to? So i could set up my client to connect to mydomain.com and have just my username set as login? I did not find a variable that seems to be more correct than %d. So i guess i have to configure that elsewehre? In userdb? [Dovecot] Horde IMP w/ dovecot folder list

Hi! I'm using dovecot-1.1.7, Horde-3.3.2 and IMP-4.3.2. The left-side folder list has some folders, whos names contains localized (non-ascii) characters. This is displayed correctly when I select the "English (American)" language entry on the login page from the dropdown menu. But when I choose my locale, which is "Magyar" (Hungarian), the folders won't display the correct characters. It's like this: With "English (American)" locale: Ügyfél With "Magyar" locale: &ANw-gyf&AOk-l The latter is the same displaying as with the folder's name on the filesystem: # ls -1 user/Maildir/ [...] .&ANw-gyf&AOk-l/ [...] I've sent this message to imp@ but, they say it is a problem with my mailserver, which I suspected, because the wrong folder names are exactly the same as the folder names on the filesystem. [Dovecot] 1.1.7: quota problem, unable to delete mails when quota exceeded

Hi, When user exceeds it's quota then dovecot can't create it's files and it's showing zero mails :( This also means that user is unable to delete it's own mails. Sounds like kind-of bug, right?
