Hello, Please let me know how I can troubleshoot this - driving me crazy! I tested with several auth configurations myself and they seemed to work, but it's possible I left a bug somewhere in there breaking someone's configuration. So make sure to test that it works after upgrading. Of course it would be really nice if Dovecot had a proper test suite where testing all configurations could be automated and run before each release. I've already started this with my imaptest tool (http://imapwiki.org/ImapTest) but it only does IMAP tests and a lot of things are still missing. Some help would be nice here. * Fixed a security hole in blocking passdbs (MySQL always. PAM, passwd and shadow if blocking=yes) where user could specify extra fields in the password. This affects only blocking passdbs: - MySQL - PAM, passwd and shadow if blocking=yes The underlying bug exists in all v1.0.x versions, but I couldn't figure out a way to exploit it except with v1.0.11, v1.0.12 and v1.1.rc2. Probably a good idea to upgrade in any case. The main problem is that Dovecot's internal protocols use TAB character as a delimiter, but passwords were sent unescaped through them. So passwords containing TAB characters allowed to add new internal fields. The main problem here is a new "skip_password_check" field added in v1.0.11 to fix problems with master user logins. Specifying this field allowed the user to skip the password check, as the name implies. This has been fixed thoroughly in v1.0.13 and v1.1.rc3 to make sure there are no more escaping problems with any fields, but it can be also fixed with a less intrusive patch for v1.0: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.0/raw-rev/da2a9372e26e

Hi, I'm having a really really strange problem. Hi I would like to simulate dovecot's dovecotpw with a perl script I tried / used use Crypt::SaltedHash; my $csh = Crypt::SaltedHash->new(algorithm => 'SHA-1'); $csh->add($passwd_string); my $salted = $csh->generate; also use Digest::SHA1; use MIME::Base64; $ctx = Digest::SHA1->new; $ctx->add($passwd_string); $ctx->add('salt'); my $salted = '{SSHA}' . encode_base64($ctx->digest . 'salt' ,''); But it doesnt work. Basically what im doing is authenticating against a mysql db. If i do a dovecotpw -s SSHA -p password and update the DB, then the mail client authenticates perfectly. Hello, I use Dovecot 1.0.12 with Postfix on FreeBSD. It works perfectly, but I have a question. My users are virtual (stocked in a MySQL database). I use SASL Dovecot authentification, and SASL uses my userdb (for POP/IMAP access). However, I would like my users have an other login/password to send email with SMTP/SASL. Or, I don't want my users use the same login/password for POP/IMAP than SMTP. More, I don't want some users could send emails with their login/password, but I want they can fetch their mails. I'm looking for an option in my dovecot.conf to specifie a table SQL for SASL authentification (and don't use same table SQL than IMAP/POP access). How I could do for this problem? Do you have an idea? Or, simply, is it possible with Dovecot SASL? I read all Dovecot wiki, with no results... Thanks very much. Nicolas

Hi Guys, I have just purchased and installed an authenticated certificate for the mail server, but I am getting errors from dovecot. My mail.err file is showing the following. [Dovecot] Building Dovecot with OpenLDAP break PAM LDAP on Solaris

Hi all, I'm back with more data on a problem Iposted about one month ago. To sum it up, my Solaris 10 box has local accounts as well as LDAP ones via PAM. They work well as-is, with no special configuratio, for WU IMAP (using the «other» entry in pam.conf. When I tried a self-built Dovecot, all accounts were authenticated without problem. Then I tried the Blastwave version, same release, but with more option, and this one didn't work with the exact same configuration: local accounts were authenticated, not the PAM LDAP ones. Now, it turns out that when Dovecot is built using OpenLDAP, then PAM LDAP account won't work. If it's built with Solaris LDAP, they work, everything else being equal. Is there any way to fix that? [Dovecot] Squat performance

The initial building (and an occational compression) performance just got a major boost. I knew there was a problem there, but I hadn't realized it was this easy to fix: http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.1/rev/4445415da4ff My 1,4 GB test lkml mbox can be now indexed in 7 minutes, doubling the speed form earlier 14 minutes. I added some more benchmark results here: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/FTS So the initial Squat index building is about 2-3x slower than the non-indexed search. I think that's pretty good. Also I think it means that the non-indexed search code could be optimized more. :) Maildir test shows that it indexes about 5 MB/CPUsec. My earlier tests showed that it indexed 8-10 MB/CPUs when feeding data directly to it, so 3-5 MB/CPUs is going elsewhere, probably to message parsing and charset conversions and such..

Hi, I am upgrading a setup from Dovecot 0.99 to 1.1. There are a bunch of .imap.index* files that it appears that I can just delete, and they will be recreated as dovecot.index* files. Right? Next, there are some .customflags that I have now learned are not being converted to dovecot-keywords (as we skipped the 1.0 version, and the conversion code appears to be removed in 1.1). Is there some way to convert this? Is it just a rename? Thanks, Anders.

How can I tell deliver to deliver it to user\'s abc(a)domain.com mail box SPAM? [Dovecot] Future enhancement of imap: sorting?

After solving a problem with a sweet little application I discovered (more on that below), I wanted to get some feedback about a potential enhancement for IMAP: standardized, MUA independant, server-side sorting. Currently, there are two basic solutions for sorting: handle it during delivery or handle it in the MUA. However, if you handle it in the MUA, you lose some of the client independancy and portability that imap was designed to address, as there is no mechanism to sync sorting rules between clients, and many lightweight clients don't support sorting at all. On the flip side, in distributed mail envrionments sorting at delivery time isn't feasible, as you typically have the entire mailspool owned by a single UID and mounted via NFS. My basic point is that the two paradigms for sorting have fundemental flaws that severaly limit them. It occured to me that it would be ideal to enable sorting in the imap daemon, enabling users to implement sorting rules which are stored in their directory (similar to the other imap metadata), and which get invoked whenever mail is checked. Perhaps that is beyond the reasonable scope of the imap protocol, but in my mind sorting is a critical task that is poorly addressed and needs to be standardized. I'd love to hear opinions on this. See, in our mail cluster environment, it's basically impossible to use procmail without forwarding your mail to our shell server (nor are we able to use the dovecot LDA). So, the question presented to me by one of my business partners was, since Outlook was shortsighted and didn't include the ability to sync sorting rules between clients, nor did they implement sorting functionality whatsoever on the windows mobile version, what options does he have to ensure proper sorting of his mail without having to leave outlook running 24x7? He doesn't want to have to wade through mailing list email on his mobile outlook, nor does he want to have to ensure his filter rules are consistent in both his outlook and our webmail. So, I poked around in the ports tree, and found a gem: imapfilter. http://imapfilter.hellug.gr/ It's configured via lua, supports a very rich array of actions and queries, and has proven to be very robust and lightweight. I helped him get started with some sample rules, added it to run every minute as a cron job, and boom: robust, fully featured, MUA independant filtering in an environment that can't support procmail or the dovecot LDA. As nice as it is, it's still a personal solution. In my mind we need to have standardized, server-side, MUA-independant sorting rules that get invoked when a mailbox is checked. Thoughts? Hi, Im running Dovecot 1.1RC1 (only IMAP). I noticed that when I connect with Outlook 2003; and I start reading new email some mails get marked (completely random) for deletion (,S -> ,ST) ?? I can set this mail to unread, undo the deletion read it again and it will stay OK. But other emails will still get marked. This only seems to happen with Outlook 2003 not with Outlook Express or Thunderbird and only with new unread mail. Any ideas why Outlook marks this mail for deletion? Cheers, Jan

When I set it (with auth_debug=no), I get a good amount of auth debug info, regardless of password matching.. ------ dovecot.conf: # In case of password mismatches, log the passwords and used scheme so the # problem can be debugged. Requires auth_debug=yes to be set. auth_debug_passwords = yes ------ I'm basically looking to just add a "login failed" line, with the username, and supplied passsword when a mismatch occurs.. I'm getting this error in my dovecot-deliver.log file... deliver(paul3(a)fleeky.com): Mar 06 10:15:08 Error: net_connect(/usr/local/var/run/dovecot-auth-master) failed: Permission denied What does that mean? If you guys need more information just ask but I just don't now what the problem is... -Paul

[Dovecot] dovecot overquota and delete message

Hi all, i use dovecot-1.1_rc1 with postfix and maildrop as deliver. The problem is where user gets overquota, at this point he is unable to delete message in pop3 as imap. dovecot.conf has: plugin { quota = maildir } protocol imap { mail_plugins = quota imap_quota } protocol pop3 { mail_plugins = quota } I change it to plugin { quota = maildir:ignore=Trash } and plugin { quota = maildir:storage=100240:ignore=Trash } but the problem persist. I have to del manually maildirsize file to get the user back to delete. Any suggestion ? tnx s

[Dovecot] Not using "." as separator?

When using maildir storage, is there any way to use something besides "." as the folder separator? I like to use folder names that match people's e-mail addresses (that's a default behavior in mutt), and "." is a pretty popular character in e-mail addresses. Ideally, I'd like to use "/". Dear Listmembers, I tried to figure out how to get statistics not only about the amount of mails which where sent from / to my mailusers, but also about the size in byte (e.g. to compare with other traffic stats) for each of my users. postfix shows me the size of sent mails per user, but afaik I cannot get the size of rcvd mails per user with it. I use the dovecot LDA with postfix and in this lda - logfiles I also cannot see a byte-like size of delivered mails. Is there any possibility get such statistics working? My used versions are (all Debian Etch): dovecot: 1.0.10 postfix: 2.4.6 Regards, Steffen Ille

Hi, If an IMAP fetch is issued some "short" time after a message was delivered with dovecot deliver then dovecot reports wrong (zero) values for that new message. Afterward, it reports the information OK. This causes problems to our IMAP client. The problem is easily reproduced with a large message on a slow machine. [Dovecot] Quota exceeded - ignore setting

Hello, I have a problem if I use the 'ignore' setting in my dovecot.conf A delete operation in the client means that the mail is copied to Trash mailbox. If the user is already over quota the delete operation will fail. Therefore I use the ignore setting, which doesn`t count the quota at all for the given mailbox. But it doesn`t work. I got still a quoted exceeded failure in my client. [Dovecot] two problems with dovecot and antispam-plugin and qmail/vpopmail

Hi! I'm trying do use antispam plug-in to split spams in different folders. My problem is with backends... I tried dspam backend and now I'm tring mail training backend. With dspam backend the problem is: When I receive a mail then dspam creates a data directory to store his data as it should do it. But when a try to move the message to Spam folder I get an error (could not execute dspam). If I remove de data directory, it works... I can move the message and by doing this de data directory is re-created. So I decided to try mail training backend. My configuration is: antispam_mail_tmpdir = /tmp antispam_mail_spam = spam@%d antispam_mail_notspam = nospam@%d antispam_mail_sendmail = /opt/qmail/bin/sendmail # antispam_mail_sendmail_args = -f;%u But an error occurs. (Failed to send mail) I tried to use qmail-inject instead but the same error occurs. Then i tried to use de args commented (-f;%u) but didn't work yet. I also tried to use a complete e-mail address to spam and notspam parameters... but nothing seems to works. So I created a shell script to use instead a sendmail program to be able to debug de error. Hi, I'm using dovecot1.1 with postfix2.2.5; I configure dovecot.conf following the dovecot-wiki. But i doesn't work. The maillog said 'Can't connect to auth server at /var/run/dovecot//auth-master: No such file or directory' when I send a mail. my Postfix Master.cf configure: dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=vmail argv=/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -f ${sender} -d ${recipient} I just confused that why it needed to be authed again when postfix pipe the mail to dovecot. [Dovecot] Effects of migration

So, to follow up to my previous thread, we just successfully migrated our NFS-based mail cluster from qmail pop, courier imap, and bincimap to dovecot 1.1rc1. Overall the transition was very smooth, the only unexpected adjustment was having to implement ntpd on each box, rather than doing an hourly ntpdate against our local ntpd server, to prevent dovecot from crashing itself from too much drift. The impact has been severe! Even with NFS-stored indexes, our netapp is seeing 1/6th of the NFS ops per second, and its CPU utilization is now at 1/3rd previous levels. The only user comment thus far was thanking us for bringing IMAP folders out from under INBOX. Dovecot is truly excellent. In my book, Timo joins Wietse Venema and Marc Martinec to form the backbone of the premiere open source mail solution. For now, praise will have to suffice. I do, however, maintain a little IOU list that I intend to fulfill at some point in the future, and Timo is now high on the list. Thanks again! [Dovecot] Problem with Thunderbird hang, multiple retry to .Sent/.Draft

I have begun havening a problem when sending or when Thunderbird tries to write copy to .Draft. Usually only happens when the message is longer. While in the Thunderbird editor will say "Copying message to Draft folder". It will try indefinitely. The copy is successful but it looks like it is believed to have failed so its retried. If you let it go hundreds of copies of message end up in .Sent and .Draft. I am totally stumped here. I have setup a dovecot user and I can telnet to port 110 and login no problem with that user. Hi all I've mounted a cluster ACTIVE-PASIVE, with the mailbox in a SAN. The user's home are: /Correo/mail/foo/home I use: Postfix, dovecot and dovecot_lda. The folder /san/mail is only show in the active node (switch the virtual ip, filesystem and daemons). How i configure dovecot mail_location?? Now i have: mail_location: maildir:/Correo/mail/%n The problem is that the admin mails in pasive node are in enqueued and not arrive. I need a user with mail_location in /var/spool/mail/foo (in aliases, root: foo)and the rest users in /Correo/mail/ I have seen override mail_executable, but it not work with dovecot_lda and postfix (local mailer). I was having trouble getting sendmail to deliver to dspam and then to dovecot's deliver. Thanks PS: I am not using the IMAP DSPAM integratation libs (yet)... I am using 1.1. [Dovecot] multiple namespaces, Mac OS X

After installing a new server with postfix/dovecot I found that the Mac OS X mail client does not see email in subfolders. It seemed to be related to the namespace. From dovecot.conf: namespace private { separator = . prefix = INBOX. inbox = yes hidden = no } After googling I found that I might need to add a default namespace with an empty prefix so I added this: namespace private { separator = . prefix = inbox = yes hidden = no } Then I was able to access mail in subfolders using the Mac mail client. However, using Kmail I can see both namespaces, where all the folders are listed under the inbox at the same level, and where all folders are listed one level below the inbox. I don't really want to keep my "INBOX." prefix so existing accounts remain unchanged. How do I solve this? The current dovecot.conf is below. I removed "dovecot" repository for now. It was almost the same as dovecot-1.1, with the exception that I had forgotten to commit a few things there and also messed up some other commits ("oh, hg export can export multiple changesets at a time, cool. oh, hg import imported it all in one changeset, not cool."). So for now v1.2 code doesn't exist. I'll clone it again from dovecot-1.1 once I have something real to commit. Although I guess that's probably going to be pretty soon.

[Dovecot] Security issue #5: mail_extra_groups setting is often used insecurely

mail_extra_groups=mail setting is often used insecurely to give Dovecot access to create dotlocks to /var/mail directory. If you don't use mboxes in /var/mail, make sure this setting is cleared. If you do use /var/mail mboxes and Dovecot gives permission errors without it, do one of the following (in the preferred order): a) Upgrade to v1.0.11 and use the new mail_privileged_group setting instead of mail_extra_groups. b) Make /var/mail sticky and world-writable (chmod 01777 /var/mail) and clear mail_extra_groups setting. c) Make /var/mail sticky (chmod +t /var/mail) and keep mail_extra_groups setting. This fixes the main problem but some may be left. The mail_privileged_group setting is also available as a patch: http://dovecot.org/patches/1.0/dovecot-1.0.10.mail_priv_groups.diff mail_extra_groups setting has existed since Dovecot v0.99.10.6. It's never been enabled by default in the distributed dovecot-example.conf, but some distributions enable it by default (at least Debian). A longer explanation: The main problem is that if users have filesystem access to the mail server, they can create symlinks. Dovecot doesn't try to prevent following symlinks (and I don't think it should) and normally it isn't a problem. But when mail_extra_groups=mail is set: 1a) Maildir: Any files readable by mail group can be read by the user by symlinking the file to their ~/Maildir/cur/. 1b) Any mbox files readable by mail group can be read by the user by symlinking the mbox file to their ~/mail/ directory. These are pretty obvious problems and I didn't think they were all that important. Why would anyone have secret files that are mail group-readable? But apparently those do exist in some systems (maybe accidentally). 2a) mbox: Any files/directories under mail group-writable directories can be created/deleted/renamed by symlinking the directory under ~/mail/. For example ln -s /var/mail ~/mail/var, DELETE var/root will happily delete root's mailbox. This I hadn't thought about before. 2b) Maildir: Pretty much the same thing can be done with maildir but with a little less control. mail_privileged_group setting works by keeping the group in process's saved GID while it's not in use and temporarily switching it to effective GID while dotlocks are created. Currently this is done only when: 1. It's only done for INBOX mbox which doesn't exist under the same location as other mailboxes (so typically under /var/mail). 2. It's used only after initial dotlock creation try failed with EACCES error.

I've recently upgraded to 1.0.10 in hopes that this problem would go away but no luck. I've got some users at my company with large inboxes on maildir (say 22,000 messages). Their mailboxes are hosted on nfs and dovecot is configured to do dotlocking. I suspect this happens with other users as well but since they have smaller inboxes they don't notice the long delays. Also this is not linked to version 1.0.10, I've been seeing on and off with the previous version (1.0rc17). Here's the 'dovecot -n' output. I should add that the default is for users to use mbox but some users (like the above one) use maildir via a separate dovecot.passwd file. [Dovecot] Missing IMAP folders

Hi, I'm fresh starting to use dovecot. Before this I used bincimap, mainly because it was very simple to config. I've tried to find the FAQ's and tried searching the archives, but little came up. My current config: server FreeBSD i386, postfix 2.4 dovecot 1.0.10 client: windows 2000 thunderbird 2.0.0.12 after some inital config this starts up, and I even have the advantage that I can save in the Sent folder on the server. However I have over 3500 folders and most of them are more than 3 levels deep. And I only get to see the first top level of directories. Searching and/or subscribing does not bring anything. Does somebody have pointers on how to fix this, other than manually trying to recreate al subscriptions. --WjW

Hi I downloaded dovecot 1.09 sources I patched it with quota-rewrite patch for v1.0. And now I have a problem with quota , I have quota dans mysql. [Dovecot] odd password issue using ]...[

Hello folks, I'm using 0.99.11 with sendmail and shadow passwords. I've discovered an odd bug with password characters. Password Result [dove] works ]dove[ fails You can substitute anything for the dove part so its the inverted ] [ that's causing some sort of problem. For the failed login I see this in the dovecot logs ... imap-login: Mar 03 15:54:10 Info: Login: test [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] dovecot-auth: Mar 03 15:54:11 Info: Login process 23 disconnected Any ideas? thanks, Tom

[Dovecot] Index corruption with squirrelmail.

Hi. I don't know if the problem is related with squirrelmail or not, but I started to have index corruption when I started to try squirrelmail. Some informaton about my instalation: dovecot 1.0.5-1 debian package with maildir squirrelmail 1.4.9a-2 debian package Some log information: dovecot: 2008-02-27 08:39:39 Warning: IMAP(<please don't send spam to me>): fscking index file /var/virtual/contactnet.com.br/fcatunda/Maildir/dovecot.index dovecot: 2008-02-27 08:39:39 Error: IMAP(<please don't send spam to me>): Unexpected transaction log desync with index /var/virtual/contactnet.com.br/fcatunda/Maildir/dovecot.index I'm not pretty sure, but it looks like that if I keep my thunderbird open, receive a message and a rule move the message from INBOX to some other folder and then, finally, I try to login in squirrelmail I reveive a message like this: Query: EXPUNGE And in my log file the above message appears. I already deleted dovecot.* files, but the error ocurred again. Any suggestion? Thanks!
