Just a heads up for all interested in using the Dovecot LDA with SIEVE scripting: I've started work on a proof-of-concept managesieve daemon, since the only one available right now is dependent on Cyrus. It appears that the only choice available for sites not using timsieved is the Ingo component of Horde, which is way too fat to install by itself (plus it uses FTP for a transport, which I make it a rule not to install). For testing purposes, I am hacking together a Perl module based on the Net::Server model (which is not suitable for production). If this goes well (the managesieve protocol is painfully stupid and the only tricky part is linking in libsieve), then I'll do a rewrite in C. It will authenticate directly to Dovecot through the auth-client (or auth-master) mechanism, so whatever SASL methods that Dovecot supports, it will support. I've decided that the eventual server will be called timosieved, in honor of our host, and echoing the original Cyrus timsieved. Hi, I'm currently installing a dovecot Server to be a replacement for an uw-imapd. I dont want to touch the clients configuration, because I have too much users... Situation is the following: the mbox files are in the users homedirectory (~/MailImap), automounted via nfs In dovecot.conf I've set default_mail_env = mbox:%h/MailImap:INBOX=/var/mail/%u It works perfect without a value in Firefox' setting 'IMAP server directory' but in all clients tis is set to '~/MailImap' so it doesnt show subfolders I already tried to symlink various things in the MailImap directory and different values of default_mail_env, but I cannot mak it work. Any suggestions? It would help if dovecot could discard the IMAP server directory setting of the client, but I am not a programmer and dont know where to look in the source :-( -- TIA dirk

Hey Guys, I want to transition from Merak to Postfix/Dovecot. I am not sure how to begin. I have been reading the different Howtos - cocktail of services to Postfix like ClamAV, Spamassissin, Greylisting, Jamm, SquirrelMail. The thing is that I want stable IMAP mail. Here is what I want to do: a. Stand alone linux box for email only - 25 users b. provide IMAP and web c. provide SSL authentication, spam filtering and virus checking. d. I would perfer to setup flat file, or unix based SIMPLE authentication scheme. e. Current users are on windows and are popping mail. Although we have LDAP, can we have another LDAP server which lives with existing server? f. I have Fedora 5 installed. I have Dovecot, Postfix, Cyrus-SASL installed. As well as webmin to manage it all. Any suggestions to get running quickly? h. I need to preserve the popped mail sitting in user Outlook clients. -- Yudhvir Singh Sidhu, 3-4039

I don't know if this has been mentioned here or even thought of in the grand scheme of things and I'm just sending a one time email about it "just in case" I recently swapped my server around and I'm using dovecot now....LOVE it! Could use a bit more intuitive error messages, but otherwise, it's great! But there is one flaw that I've run into with my users. Case sensitivity. As you all know, Linux is case sensitive and windows is not and mail should always be lower case. I have users who are checking Thisemail(a)domain.tld instead of thisemail(a)domain.tld. This causes my build to create a folder for Thisemail(a)domain.tld to check instead of pulling mail from thisemail(a)domain.tld Either rate, I'm correcting users when I find it, but it doesn't help when I have those that USE ALL CAPS BECAUSE EITHER IT'S COOL OR THEY USE IT FOR OTHER PURPOSES AND DON'T TURN IT OFF. Now I have other problems: - Error message: imap-login: Can't open SSL parameter file ssl-parameters.dat: Permission denied I don´t know if it is because I have another location for ssl-parameters.dat file $ls -la /var/run/dovecot-1.0/login/ssl-parameters.dat -rw------- 1 root dovecot 230 Jul 4 13:41 ssl-parameters.dat - I´m testing dovecot with Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 and when I try to access several folders this error appear: " ... use the Advanced IMAP Server Settings dialog to reduce the number of cache connections." in config file: auth_cache_size = 0 So cache is disable - And last error is when I send a message. I just install RC1 + Plugin cmusieve (cvs), the sieve script is compiled and the sive lib seems OK. But in my log I have sendmail qui with signal 11 when I try to send a mail with "redirect" or "vacation" ? Any possibilitie to use a external SMTP server ? Signal 11 with sendmail is often a memory problem, but the server is in production since more than one month without any problem to sendmail. As discussed in the previous thread about "Dovecot deliver logging problem and procmail" I have made a small patch for procmail to deliver through dovecot's deliver program (or any other delivery program). So Procmail does not write the mailboxes directly any more. So delivery is done through pipes and an external program which can deliver the files. Since dovecot's deliver program can not handle absolute pathes, theses files are handled directly by procmail. See the configuration options below for details. Also INBOX handling needs special handling because this is handled through the /var/spool/mail/$LOGNAME folder which dovecot deliver can not handle. So this is mapped (when configured) to the INBOX folder. For debugging purposes you can add the VERBOSE=on variable. A sample configuration for dovecot usage with documentation is discussed below. Some other delivery agents (e.g. cyrus) might need other options. Keep in mind that the environment expansions with $ in the DELIVER_PROGRAM must be escaped with a backslash. Having some difficulty with this one: I have Postfix setup, with a web interface for postfixadmin. Both Dovecot and Postfix are setup to use the same MySQL database to authenticate users. Only SSL connections are allowed, so I use PLAIN/cleartext as my password type. I have a current working installation of Postfix, Dovecot and MySQL. I want to utilize the Dovecot implementation of SaSL for SMTP-AUTH. Hi all, i got a problem with the umask parameter. I set it to umask=0007 because i need to access mail with another process with different uid, but dovecot seems to ignore the directive for files. I'm using the last 1.0_rc2 release and i'm storing mail in maildir format. Good day, I am having trouble getting dovecot to authenticate using postgresql. For some reason, it fails on a PAM error, although I have specified pgsql as authentication? It queries the database for the password, but it does not seem to query for user? Hi we run dovecot on sun solaris 9. I try to switch from dovecot 0.99.11 to dovecot 1.0, with ssl support turned on. The user's mail are stored in mbox format in Mail in their home dirs. I was not able to get the subscrition working properly with the new dovecot. New means: 1.0beta2 and now also 1.0.RC1 (beta9) The client mailreaders are mainly thunderbird 1.0x and 1.5.x, Netscape Messenger, and SquirrelMail for web access. The mail folder subscriptions stored in <usershome>/Mail/.subscriptions works fine with the dovecot 0.99.11. With dovecot_1.0 the subscriptions get properly read, but as soon as the user wants to make any changes to them (for example subscribing to a new folder out of thunderbird), the subscriptions get lost, the file <usershome>/Mail/.subscriptions simply disappears. Did I miss any point in the configuration? Or does someone else encounter the same problem? Hello! Currently I'm trying to integrate dovecot's deliver program into procmail. So basically I'd write a patch for procmail to deliver not directly into the mbox file but delivering with the dovecot deliver program. Do you think this is a good concept? For testing I use the commands discussed below. Today (tonight..) I thought maybe I should see how easy this would be to implement: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1469343&group_id=1… So basically if enabled it'd add a "Reply-To: dovecot(a)dovecot.org" for the mails you *send* to this list. You can of course already do this yourself, but most clients don't support setting it automatically. I even managed to make it work: http://dovecot.org/tmp/mailman-2.1.8.replytolist.diff But should I actually enable it for Dovecot list? It'll probably break completely once Mailman 2.2/3.0 comes out (when does it come?) and I probably won't bother updating it then. And somehow I feel that the patch won't get accepted to upstream version..

Hello! It seems to me that correct deletion of message in thunderbird still doesn't work with ThanderBird and dovectot 1rc1. As I've said before messages are not removed phisically from filesystem, just marked for deletetion. Though I'm not sure that this is dovecot bug and not ThunderBird. Anyone to clarify this issue ?

Timo, My setup: Solaris 9, 1.0rc1, built like so: CC=gcc CFLAGS="-g -O" CPPFLAGS=-I/opt/openssl/include \ LDFLAGS=-L/opt/openssl/lib ./configure --prefix=/opt/dovecot.1.0rc1 \ --with-ssl=openssl --with-ssldir=/opt/openssl/ssl \ --with-sql-drivers=no --disable-ipv6 using gcc 4.1.0. Protocols are imap and imaps. My system paniced and crashed in the middle of the night, and after it came up the ssl-parameters.dat file was messed up. >From syslog: child 1965 (login) returned error 89 imap-login: Can't open SSL parameter file ssl-parameters.dat: Permission denied Nobody was getting their email via imap. So I removed the directories /opt/dovecot/var and /var/run/dovecot to get dovecot to rebuild the ssl-parameters.dat file. Questions: 1) Why on Earth does ssl-build-param take so long??!! (> 12 minutes on my E220R) What is it doing? How to speed this process up, and/or tune it? 2) Where does ssl-parameters.dat get written to? I found one copy in the /opt/dovecot/var/lib/dovecot directory, and one copy in /var/run/dovecot/login. Which copy gets used? 3) What are the permissions supposed to be for ssl-parameters.dat? The copy in /var/run was chown root:other and chmod 640. I could not get rid of the syslog "permission denied" until I made it chmod 644. 4) Likewise the directories /opt/dovecot/var and below get created chown root:other and chmod 750, with ssl-parameters.dat chmod 640. Hi, I've spent some part of the last week on trying to figure out whether dovecot LDA meets our requirements for a new mail server infrastructure (the IMAP and POP servers, as well as the SASL backend certainly do; thanks a lot!). The one thing that's holding me back is that we need per-user integration of SpamAssassin and some other, custom content filters, all of which are implemented as Unix pipe filters. My conclusion is that since dovecot LDA cannot yet integrate such filters in the delivery chain, but it supports plugins, that such a plugin must be written. Conceptually, it's very simple: a configuration file option specifying the Unix pipe, and a plugin that does the proper popen() (or whatever is to be used these days) call, checking for errors and doing the right thing. Unfortunately, I do not have much time at my hands -- basically it all boils down to Sunday evening and a little bit of Monday, and then it's got to be done. My C is rusty, but I do have a lot of experience with it, so I am confident... ... but what would really help is if someone who knows the internals of Dovecot would give me a starting point, or even some more information. How do I conceive to write such a plugin? I could not find the information online, and I'd rather not reverse engineer existing plugins, for that approach usually leads to ugly and hence unstable/insecure/unusable code. Any feedback is thus warmly appreciated! Also, if someone is online on IRC on Sunday and Monday and wouldn't mind if I asked a question now and then, please let me know. [Dovecot] SSL proxy rewrite

Last time I committed my SSL proxy rewrite people complained that it got broken. Now that I'm finally trying to fix it, it seems to work perfectly with me. Both downloading lots of messages and saving lots of messages works fine. I added SSL alerts and something else to be logged now with verbose_ssl=yes. With that enabled, could you people try if the rewritten code works with you, and if not, what do the logs say? Since I put this installation in an FreeBSD geli encrypted disc image I had no choice but to choose an imapd with clever indexes - dovecot was perfect. However, since I reconfigured the disc image to work as a FreeBSD jail, I had some trouble with my web mail solution. Squirrelmail does not work with imaps (or at least not smoothly, out of the box, or whatever) and I didn't like to hack php to support SSL. Plus: there is no point in using ssl for a local connection. In a FreeBSD jail a sockets source address is always rewritten to the jails address, so squirrelmail opening a connection to dovecot will not come from 127.0.0.1 but from the same (jails) address, dovecot listens to. Still, dovecot only considers 'localhost' addresses as secure and allows LOGIN or PLAIN auth. With the little patch below dovecot allows clients from the jail to authenticate via LOGIN, when they connect from the IP it accepts connections at. Something similar is lurking around in pop3 auth code, I am sure, you get the point. [dovecot-1.0-0.beta2.7 on Fedora Core 5, maildir formatted mail directories, various clients: thunderbird 1.5.0.4 from FC4 and WinXP, SquirrelMail 1.4.6-5.fc5 RPM, various recent versions of Pine from various Fedoras and Redhat 9] I have just one mail user who experiences server timeouts when trying to delete a message (move it to Trash) or other common operations. This user has 4.1GB of mail spread over 200+ Maildir-formatted folders, so I immediately expected sheer volume as the problem - this user has by far the most mail. This user experiences the problem from multiple Thunderbird installs, from SquirrelMail, and from Pine. However, I created a new user account using our standard account creation processes, and did a direct copy of olduser's Maildir to newuser's homedir. Then I did a chown -R newuser ~newuser/Maildir, set up an account in Thunderbird for newuser's account, and tried for an hour to get a server timeout doing all the same operations that cause the timeout on olduser's account, with no timeouts. I absolutely cannot duplicate the behavior, but when I watch olduser do this from any of the above named clients, I see the timeouts on about 10% of the operations. I've been looking into this off and on for weeks, but I am baffled. I can't think of what is so specific about this one user's account that is causing the trip up. Both home directories are stored on the same filesystem and as I mentioned I made an exact duplicate of Maildir. I'm completely out of ideas, does anyone have any thoughts? Does Dovecot do any data tracking on a per user basis that could be confusing it, some cache I can clear? We are using dovecot-0.99.13-3.FC3; the users use IMAP. I have had several of these today where the user cannot write to their Sent folder on the server. I know this is the fault of Mail.app, whose IMAP support leaves a lot to desire, but I was wondering if there could be some dovecot configuration tricks that make the interaction smoother. I think I've found a bug in Dovecot 1.0 rc1 where if you have namespaces without the "location = " setting defined, it fails to use default_mail_env as it should. Hello, how can I configure the IMAP quota plugin to force quotas on inbox only? I would like to limit the size of each of the user's inbox (in /var/mail/%u) to 50 meg and I do not want to force any quotas in their folders (mbox style). They should keep their inbox small :) thanks, Kristian
