[Dovecot] Question about mail storage

I am in the throes of trying to understand all the issues of transforming an old UW Imap server with mbox (I think) INBOX format running sendmail and procmail serving 3500 users to dovecot and maildir format. Currently, the folders are under ~/mail and the INBOXes are under /var/spool/mail. If I understand correctly, the typical default Dovecot/maildir format installation will have both the INBOX and folders (prefixed with a period), so they take the format: .<foldername>) under ~/Maildir. Right? I am planning to do a gradual phaseover of one chunk of ids at a time........ "I am in a maze of twisty tunnels, all alike. A dwarf runs by........" Some questions: 1) In the UW IMap docs, formats.txt discusses a bunch of different mailbox formats. Alternately, how do I tell if what I now have (some sort of one big single-file INBOX) is mbox? Or is what he's referring to as unix just mbox 2) How to change Where Things End Up a) The users' ~/.procmailrc pretty much consists of: MAILDIR=$HOME/mail Am I correct in assuming that this should be changed to: MAILDIR=$HOME/Maildir/ ? b) Mail appears to end up in /var/spool/mail/<username> because that's the procmail default (ORGMAIL). To redirect individual users (because this will be a gradual changeover), am I correct in assuming that putting: DEFAULT=$HOME/Maildir/ in ~/.procmailrc will redirect incoming mail? 3) I see that, in the default configuration, /everything/ will now be under ~/Maildir and thus in the home directories. Is there a reason to get away from a separate INBOX directory (we use /var/spool/mail)? I'd have to rebuild the homedir filesystems to accommodate the INBOX demands. This isn't all that big a deal, I'd like to understand the rationale..or should I just bow to the inevitable? 4) Pardon my stupidity, but how is the Dovecot INBOX under maildir++ organized? a) Is it a separate directory under ~/Maildir (say ~/Maildir/INBOX or some such) that has a separate file for each message or b) are the INBOX messages just mixed in with the folders under ~/Maildir. If so, how are they differentated? Enlighten my ignorance,.please! I've been reading docs today until my brain feels like custard, but I couldn't seem to get clear definitive answers to these questions........ [Dovecot] How to configure virtual use suport.

Hello, I have RHEL v4 Linux. I have always been using exim with teapop (po3 client) for my emails. I would like to try dovecot (imap) because I would like to implement squirrelmail. I'm hosting several domains with email each on different IP. I have the some user names in different domains with my pop3 teapop. Can I have it with dovecot. I managed to configure exim to deliver messages for localuser to Maildir directory. directory = /var/spool/mail/${local_part}/Maildir and for virtual_users to Maildir directory. directory = /var/spool/mail/${domain}/${local_part}/Maildir This is working. Email are delivered. But I cannot to connect with my Outlook Express to imap server and download them. I cannot see how dovecot would differentiate between users with the some named in different domains. I believe that me configurations is not right. I would like for starters to have real user to be checked (like in teapop) against /etc/password /etc/shadow file, and virtual user against /etc/mail/passwd.domain file which would contain login:passwd pairs. Do I need like with teapop different IP for every domain ? How do I do that? Any advice would be appreciated. I'm going for a few days vacation I hope that somebody will be able to give me some hints. I have attached my dovecot.conf file. regards Slawomir Orlowski

All, I'm trying to teach dovecot to use the mbox format for /var/mail/%u and maildir for /home/%u/Mail/ but I'm having quite a hard time. This is Dovecot v1.0.beta3 under OpenBSD 3.9 on sparc64. I've been fiddling with default_mail_env and also tried separate namespaces, but all to no avail. Here's some of the things I tried : default_mail_env = maildir:/home/%u/Maildir:INBOX=mbox:/var/mail/%u ... default_mail_env = INBOX=mbox:/var/mail/%u:MAIL=maildir:/home/%u/Maildir/ ... namespace private { separator = / prefix = inbox = yes location = mbox:/var/mail/%u } namespace private { separator = / prefix = "Folders/" location = maildir:/home/%u/Mail } ... But all it does is complain that my mbox files dont have a cur/ directory in them or create mbox-type files in /home/%u/mail/, in stead of saving my mail in a maildir under /home/%u/Mail/. So using namespaces doesn't seem to be such a good idea after all, I can have extra maildirs under Folders/ in ~/Mail, but that's not where my IMAP client saves its sent mail. I'm quite obviously doing something wrong, is this possible at all ? What is the correct incantation for the default_mail_env setting for such a setup ? [Dovecot] multiple domains for the same user

I have postfix and dovecot set up to use virtual domains. I am now experiencing a problem that when I log in as user1(a)domain1.tld and then log in as user1(a)domain2.tld all the emails are downloaded for user1(a)domain2.tld as it thinks all the messages are new. is there anyway to stop dovecot from saying that all the messages are new?

I'm trying to see what users are sending for login. I added the rawlog binary in front of the imap-login in the config file. I'm not seeing any rawlogs. I added the dovecot.rawlog in the dovecot user directory (since that's what the imap-login process seems to run as) and it's permission are wide open. Still nothing. Help?

[Dovecot] Very Complex Master Password Challenge

This might require adding some new code to Dovecot to pull this off. But it would be extremely powerful if I could get this to work. Here's the situation. Having a master password is great for helping users and doing tech support. But - suppose I'm hosting many domains and I want to create master passwords for each domain separately so that the owners of the domain can log in as any user within that domain? Here's the way I have things set up. I have a directory of passwd/shadow pairs for each domain as follows: /etc/vmail/passwd.domain1.com /etc/vmail/shadow.domain1.com /etc/vmail/passwd.domain2.com /etc/vmail/shadow.domain2.com Additionally I have a master domain used for management of the other domains. The master domain is an email account for each domain under the domain junkemailfilter.net. domain1.com(a)junkemailfilter.net domain2.com(a)junkemailfilter.net The password and shadow files are like the others: /etc/vmail/passwd.junkemailfilter.net /etc/vmail/shadow.junkemailfilter.net So - the idea is that the owners of the domain have access to the email accounts on junkemailfilter.net and what I'm hoping to do is that they can use this as the master password for their domain only. Example: domain1.com(a)junkemailfilter.net domain2.com(a)junkemailfilter.net I suppose that the master password feature needs another new feature to limit the scope of what it is allowed to be a master password for. Something perhaps like: passdb passwd-file { # Path for passwd-file args = /etc/vmail/shadow.junkemailfilter.net master = yes scope = *@%u } In the above example "%u" is the user part of the master password. So that that master user would be for example "domain1.com(a)junkemailfilter.net" and it would be the master password only for users of domain1.com and not domain2.com. So - if you can follow this - then you will see that this would be a really cool feature to have. And - I'm guessing that it might be easy to implement.

Hi all. I got my previous problem fixed. Effective uid and gid fix in dovecot.conf file made it work. However, I'm still seeing this in my /var/log/dovecot.conf dovecot: 2006-04-13 21:09:00 Info: imap(chl(a)iaminla.com): Effective uid=1000, gid=1000 The uid and gid *should* both be 1009, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to configure that. I looked around the list and couldn't find the answer. Help a noob out please? Hi Still running 1.0 stable (an old release i know but until i see more stable reports on beta7 i will hold out). last night is the first time in months the dovecot has died. maillog has repeated lines of this. [Dovecot] hard link between courierimapuiddb and dovecot-uidlist?

Hi, guys. I'm attempting to transition between Courier IMAP and Dovecot. I may not be able to transition all the courierimapuiddb files instantly or even transition all my servers at the same time. Ideally, it wouldn't matter. Users can login and get to a Courier IMAP machine or a Dovecot machine and read their email (all mounted via NFS). My question is: is there any reason I can't just do a hard link between courierimapuiddb and dovecot-uidlist? That way, I can transition users over to Dovecot at my leisure. And, if I need to, I can move back to Courier. The hard link is essentially free and lets me make sure these files stay synced. Thanks Jeff

Hi, Occasionally I get an error message in my dovecot log when, in evolution, I click on the inbox: dovecot: Apr 21 00:07:06 Error: imap(admin): unlink(/home/admin/.maildir/cur/1145393825.P23027Q0M159929.terminator.odyssey.nl:2,ST) failed: Is a directory Instead of the message being delivered as a file it appears to be written as a directory. Deleting those directories solves the error message from reappearing. Any ideas? I use FC5, dovecot-1.0-0.beta2.7, postfix-2.2.8-1.2, procmail-3.22-16.2.1 Regards, Alfred

Hi, i'm having a weird message connecting to an account using IMAP + TLS from thunderbird (evolution works great, so does SSL in thunderbird, haven't tested anywhere else yet): "You cannot login to <domain> because the server has disabled login. If a host is running NIS (passwd file ends in +::0:0:::) authentication, will dovecot be able to authenticate with auth_userdb = passwd directly and automagically or do you have to do a ypcat passwd > pwfile periodically to generate a passwd file that dovecot can use? ? [Dovecot] Connection closed by foreign host.

I'm writing this on behalf of someone else... They successfully setup Dovecot, and can login to Dovecot using telnet but as soon as they are logged in, they get the message "Connection closed by foreign host" and are disconnected. The user is a valid Linux user and the mail file exists under /var/mail. They say no errors are written to /var/log/maillog. # telnet localhost 110 Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1). Escape character is '^]'. +OK dovecot ready. USER mymailuser +OK PASS 123456 +OK Logged in. Connection closed by foreign host. # Can anyone give me ideas where we would begin troubleshooting this? Many thanks, Steve :)

[Dovecot] LDA Plugin Maybe?

I was just looking into setting up DSPAM, with the Dovecot LDA. Essentially, what I was probably going to do, was use DSPAM as the Delivery agent, after postfix, and then have it pass it off to dovecot, or something along those lines. I just had an idea, if we start using libdspam, in the dspam plugin, or one of the other suggested methods, we could have a similar plugin in the LDA, so that if it's marked as spam, deliver it straight into the Spam folder! Also, with Sieve, can we make it create a folder if the folder doesn't exist, and can it modify the subscriptions file? Thanks Tim -- Linux Counter user #273956

Hello everybody! I was searching around for an solution of my problem what surely is just a little thing, but nothing helped me out. Here the error in the mail.log: pop3(contact(a)maddy.cc): Failed to create storage with data: /var/vmail/maddy.cc/contact/ pop3-login: Login: contact(a)maddy.cc [84.4.228.150] dovecot: child 30083 (pop3) returned error 89 Who has to be the owner/group for /var/vmail/maddy.cc and /contact ? Because i have the user 'virtual' who manages the maildirs and the accounts (via PostgreSQL) and the user dovecot, but i tried already different scenarios with both and still no success. Do you still have some hints what i do wrong? Have you an idea what is happen here? Probably a very know problem but I fail to find a solution. selinux enforced makes the /etc/init.d/dovecot start command fail If I change it to permiscious mode then it works. Any idea how to solve this? I use FC5 with dovecot-1.0-0.beta2.7 Thanks, Alfred

Hi Borthers/Sisters Thanks for all the developer(s) and for all the hard work spent on build this great piece of software! I loved Dovecot since it is really easy to set up and really fast but I am really new to it (only 2 weeks and half). Right now, our server configuration is: Server: Apple Xserve G5 dual RAM: 4GB Number of Users: ~ 150 IMAP only users Authentication: LDAP Mailboxes sizes: ~200GB Dovecot version: 1.0 Beta 5 (I am looking forward to beta 7 that was released today) Email client software: mostly Thunderbird 1.5 Right now, we are experiencing occasional problem with imap users unable to connect to the server. With beta 3, we had to restart the dovecot/imap processes almost every 3 hours. with Dovecot beta5 we still have to restart the processes but it seems to occur every 3 days (Friday and Yesterday) and only in a peak time (around 3pm). I am waiting to occur it again and I will be able to grab more information about the number of processes, users, virtual memory, etc, etc. So, at this point, I don't have much information to debug the problem. Let's wait. I guess we have here a nice machine (xserve) and not a huge number of users (~150). So, I would expect that our server would handle the load. But having to restart Dovecot once a while, as I described, is not an option (users are getting frustrated). :( Maybe with Beta 7 with the feature "Added shutdown_clients setting to control if existing imap/pop3 processes should be killed when master is" can stop our nightmares :) By the way, our dovecot.conf is basically the default sent with the software. We haven't changed much there! Meanwhile, I'd like to know, if possible, whar are you using to run Dovecot like hardware, OS version, number of users and problems that you are experiencing. Hi, quota is now working well, except that both quota-fs and quota-maildir is showing incorrect values. I have to use this patch to get correct numbers. I _know_ it's totally wrong, and that the cause have to be something else, I just want to know if this is something with my setup, or what? I'm setting up a new server with dovecot 1.0b7. Fixes, mostly: * The login and master usernames were reversed when using master_user_separator (now the order is UW-IMAP compatible). * Killing dovecot master process now kills all IMAP and POP3 processes also. + -a parameter to dovecot prints now all settings that Dovecot uses. -n prints all settings that are different from defaults. + Added pop3_lock_session setting + %M modifier returns string's MD5 sum. Patch by Ben Winslow - PLAIN SASL authentication wasn't working properly, causing failed logins with some clients (broken in beta4) - Fixes to Maildir++ quota, should actually work now - Don't crash if passwd-file has entries without passwords (eg. deny=yes databases) - Fixed prefetch userdb to work nicely with other userdbs - If master process runs out of file descriptors, don't go to infinite loop (unlikely to have happened unless the OS's default fd limit was too low) - Fixed non-plaintext password lookups from LDAP. My problem is, the most customers will lookup all 30 seconds or 1 minutes for new mails, that is stupid so I mean. My idea is a function where the customer must wait (for example) 3 minutes for a pop3-connect and lookup for new emails. Is it possible? Hi, I haven't tried compiling 1.0 series since -test52, figured I'd give it a shot. There were a couple of minor problems. This is building on a fairly ancient BSD/OS box, so the issues may not be universal, but I suspect these ones are. ==================== Building in src/lib-dict/dict.c : loading the 'dict' program fails because it can't find various RAND and other functions. Adding -lcrypto fixes. Because we have fairly draconian attachment size limits, the 52GB of mail we are serving contains a _lot_ of mail. Dovecot is working extremely well for us at this site, and several other smaller sites all using a combination of OSX Mail and Outlook. Sorry, the authentication problem still wasn't actually fixed in beta6. Now, this time I tested every possible authentication case that it really works. I'll soon create a CVS branch which is going to stabilize into the 1.0 release. I won't add new features there so it shouldn't really get broken anymore, at least because of new features.. So, two changes in this release: + Added shutdown_clients setting to control if existing imap/pop3 processes should be killed when master is. - Master login fixes, PLAIN authentication was still broken..

[Dovecot] problem with out-of-box fedora rpm

Hi Folks, Most of the available howtos suggest that an out of the box binary rpm should at least be able to start on a similarly out of the box Fedora Core 4 installation. However, whenever I run /sbin/service dovecot start I get a failed message. Dovecot was installed using the standard package that ships with FC4 (i386 0.99.14). The only slightly anomalous feature of my system is that wlan0 not eth0 is the primary network interface. This hasn't upset anything else though. I even tried disabling the firewall briefly to see if that had any effect, and it doesn't. So, two questions. Firstly, any ideas on why it might be failing to start? Secondly, where might I look (like, which logs/where) for clues? /var/log/messages doesn't contain any references to dovecot (I grepped it), so I'm out of ideas. My sendmail configuration is working perfectly, and I can send and receive emails fine. But I need pop3 access for some of my users. Just to recap, I haven't even got to the point of testing whether its listening, or configuring authentication. It will not start out of the box. Am I missing some essential configuration step?
