Sieve not working again

Hello, For the past few weeks, I have been facing an issue where user Sieve scripts no longer work. I have configured the filtering of spam emails marked by Rspamd in a before.sieve script, and that works fine. However, the user scripts created via ManageSieve through the Roundcube webmailer do not function anymore. I suspect that this issue started after a Debian 12.6 system upgrade. Could it be that something fundamentally changed, or is Dovecot not fully compatible with Debian 12? However, I find that hard to believe. Despite repeatedly reinstalling the Dovecot environment and verifying file permissions and configurations multiple times, I haven't been able to resolve the issue. I’ve been running Sieve for over 15 years on various servers and have never encountered such problems. Unfortunately, the sieve_user_log = /var/log/dovecot/sieve.log file is not being created. The directory specified in sieve_trace_dir = /var/log/dovecot/sieve is created, but it only logs actions from before.sieve, not from user Sieve scripts. Trying to track down the source of a corrupted cache error

Recently we have been seeing a steady increase (nothing too crazy, just more than usual) in "Deleting corrupted cache record" log errors. What struck me as weird was that it would be for the same message over and over, indicating that the deleted record was making it back into the cache. I'm trying to follow the instruction https://doc.dovecot.org/2.3/configuration_manual/howto/antispam_with_sieve/ to setup IMAPSieve I cannot find any info on what sieve_pipe_bin_dir should point to. Any references I have found to this point to the old wiki. My current spam learning sieve scripts are in file:/home/vmail/sieve/global/ Should sieve_pipe_bin_dir point to this? Thanks, Leo

Dovecot IMAP Mail latency

We are working on importing emails from Gmail to Dovecot. During the process, all emails are written to a new directory within the mail folder. For fetching the emails, we are using the IMAP protocol with the imap_tools Python library. After importing, we run the IMAP fetch at 5-second intervals. However, the newly imported emails do not appear immediately. They only become available after 30 to 40 seconds. How can we resolve this issue? What steps can we take to debug and identify the source of the delay?

If I create a directory structure manually, everything works well. Maybe we can make some parameter in config, telling that we are using virtiofs and skip EINVAL when doing fchown...

Is this a bug or do I have to change something in my setup? "INBOX can't be deleted" error when syncing from imapc

I'm syncing mail from an IMAP server to local Maildirs with `doveadm backup -R`, and I sometimes get an error the second time I sync an account: > Mailbox INBOX sync: mailbox_delete failed: INBOX can't be deleted. I've figured out that the sync completes the first time without an error, but the UIDVALIDITY of the INBOX Maildir doesn't match the UIDVALIDITY on the IMAP server. Then the second time doveadm detects the mismatch and wants to delete the INBOX, but it can't because Maildir INBOXes can't be deleted. So I think the root cause is that the INBOX is being created with the wrong UIDVALIDITY in the first place. It only seems to happen when there are no messages in the INBOX on the server at the time the Maildir is created, but it doesn't seem to happen all the time. Is there anything I can do to make the sync job run smoothly? Andy

bug? dsync extremely much slower on forward than reverse direction

I have been experimenting with dsync lately, and to my surprise I found that dsync in forward direction is extremely slow compared for reverse (-R) direction for the exact same data, disk caches flushed both times. Extended LIST not working

Hi, i try to use extended LIST command but it doesn't work out. I wonder if there is any option necessary to enable it or some option that prevent using extended LIST commands (for example Courier compatible namespace config). I didn't find anything in the documentation. Authentication hangs on before SSL initialization

I'm running into below probem; my ath is stuck on initializing SSL. Certificates are fine, cert-chain is tested and auth no further errors are shown. sharing sso between regular mail client and web applications

I am testing a bit with sso with keycloak, I was wondering if/how it is possible that your logged in session between eg Thunderbird and dovecot can be used as a single sign on in webapplications. So as long as you have an active session with dovecot you can access all your web applications without the need to login.

Hi, I'm running into a problem where I'm not sure anymore if it's possible to proxy to an SQLite database file using a dict for authentication. openid / roundcube example

Does anyone have a current config example using openid and with roundcube. I like to add this next to 'regular' logins'. I was able to login once but know I am getting these in the logs " No requests to service for this peer (1 connections exist, 0 pending)" I have added the 2 passdb with links to dovecot-oauth2.token.conf.ext from this manual[1], but it is not really clear if I need these and can just add a config file with openid_configuration_url [1] https://doc.dovecot.org/2.3/configuration_manual/authentication/oauth2/

Hello! I'm using dovecot with keycloak for oauth authentication. My config is: client_id = dovecot client_secret = MY_SECRET introspection_url = https://MY_KEYCLOAK/realms/master/protocol/openid-connect/token/introspect introspection_mode = post pass_attrs = pass=%{oauth2:access_token} Everything worked great on version 2.3.20. After upgrading to version 2.3.21.1 oauth stopped working with errors: auth: Debug: http-client: conn [::1]:443 [1]: Got 401 response for request [Req1: POST https://MY_KEYCLOAK/realms/master/protocol/openid-connect/token/introspect] Unauthorized (took 5 ms + >Aug 16 00:23:58 auth: Error: oauth2(MY_EMAIL,127.0.0.1,<HADwdb8f+PN/AAAB>): oauth2 failed: Introspection failed: No username returned I tried all combination of configurations, debugging and versions of keycloak. Seems something was broken in this version of dovecot.

Locking box for backups

I’m running 2.3.19.1 on a system that isn’t set up to support filesystem snapshots. So I’d like to back up my mdbox mailboxes at a filesystem level (with rsync, or something equivalent). I’m assuming that to get a consistent backup I should lock the mailbox while I copy it. How should I acquire a (write) lock on an mdbox mailbox? Cheers, Steve

replication and backup

Hi all & thanks Aki for adding me to the list. First of all, I'm not a dovecot user yet. For several years now I use cyrus imapd and never saw the urge to switch, until I recently lost random mails from my mailbox which were neither temporally connected nor related in some other way. Fortunately, I had a rolling replication which never expunges, so I was able to restore them. While circumventing some pitfalls during the restore, I learned that the backup and restore procedure cyrus imapd offers is deprecated and will be removed. Now I ponder whether or not I should switch the mda. Does dovecot offer the following? - setting up a rolling replication which replicates every action made to the mailbox (flags, mark as deleted, relocations, etc.) to a different server (one way only) - NOT expunging the emails that have been marked as deleted on the slave server or expunging only manually - restoring selected emails from the slave directly to the master The slave server doesn't need to be accessible via imap, I'd be happy to search for some header data (subject, recipient, sender, date, ...) and restore the email by command line using its uuid or message-id or something like that. Browsing the documentation I found "doveadm-backup" which is using "dsync", but I'm not sure whether or not it fits my requirements. I'd love to hear your opinions. Kind regards, Philippe

Dears, I recently installed the package dovecot-fts-xapian on my Ubuntu 22.04 VM, where dovecot 2.3.16 is installed. I enabled the plugins mail_plugins = $mail_plugins fts fts_xapian plugin { ### # fts fts = xapian fts_xapian = partial=3 full=20 fts_autoindex = yes fts_enforced = yes #fts_autoindex_exclude = \Trash # Index attachements fts_decoder = decode2text } I skip to show the "service indexer-worker" and "decode2text" for the moment. After restarting dovecot I ran doveadm index -A \* which ran without any issues. But for the moment I am faced with two issues I am unable to solve on my own and also didn't found a solution on the internet: 1. The indexer created a new directory "xapian-indexes" in the user's mail folder (where also "INBOX", "Drafts", "Sent", ... exists), with the result that you can see this folder in Thunderbird and GMail Android App. How to hide / disable the folder to mail programs, IMHO no mail program should have access to it. 2. When listing the capabilities of my mail server I get "CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE IDLE SPECIAL-USE LITERAL+ AUTH=PLAIN AUTH=LOGIN" and it seems to lack the FTS capability(s). Am I right? And should dovecot set the capabality on its own or is something missing in the config? If you need more info, just let me know please. Thanks and kind regards Torge

Hi, I have sporadic messages on my server about an account getting an out of memory error: Fatal: master: service(imap): child 17910 returned error 83 (Out of memory (service imap { vsz_limit=325 MB }, you may need to increase it) - set CORE_OUTOFMEM=1 environment to get core dump) In response, I raised the limit from 256MB up to 325. That didn’t seem to help. The server has only 512 MB of RAM so I’m afraid to go much higher. I googled around a bit and some people are saying that when the dovecot.index.cache grows too large, it can cause these errors. The imap account has a dovecot.index.cache file that is 167 MB which seems to be well below the limit (but maybe it is compressed?). So I’m not entirely sure as to what the underlying problem is. So before upgrading to the server to 1024 MB of ram and going on a wild goose chase, I just want to get input on whether I have positively identified the problem and whether there might be something else I can do to manage this problem.

I have just moved from cyrus-imap to dovecot. In cyrus I had an automatic purge of messages marked as deleted with a cron job: /usr/lib/cyrus-imapd/cyr_expire -E 1 -X 7 -D 7 -E = Expire Days -X = Expunge days What is the equivalent in doveadm? doveadm expunge -A DELETED BEFORE 1w Is there any equivalent to expire messages marked as deleted? I can't remember why I have it as I set up Cyrus so long ago. I also delete from deleted (INBOX.trash) anything older than a year. In Cyrus, it is run from an event in the configuration: trashPurge cmd="ipurge -s -X -f -d 365 user/*/Trash" at=0104 I would be happy to run it from cron, so does this work: doveadm expunge -A mailbox INBOX.trash SENTBEFORE 52w Except I get: doveadm(nobody): Error: mkdir(/nonexistent/.Maildir) failed: Permission denied (euid=65534(nobody) egid=65534(nogroup)) I can run it for the individual users but not -A. If by expire, you mean expunge, this is more or less what I used in a nightly cron script doveadm expunge -A $ mailbox 'Deleted Items' OR mailbox 'Deleted Messages*' OR mailbox Junk OR mailbox Trash OR \( mailbox INBOX Deleted $ \) BEFORE 7d In English, for all users, delete any messages in commonly named trash folders or any messages in INBOX marked as deleted that are older than a week. I recall one quirk: if the mailbox didn't have a cached entry for the message's age, the filter criteria would miss this and it would remain in the mailbox. IMAP quota reporting free disk space

Hi, Is it possible to make IMAP quota commands report free filesystem space? I don't want to set quota limits to individual users, but it would be nice to have an information on the bottom of Thunderbird window about free disk space (it could be percentage of the total disk size). Anyway I have trouble with quota reporting itself, because I tried to setup a regular quota (100G) first, but somehow Thunderbird doesn't report free quota as it does in case of Gmail accounts. I added to 20-imap.conf: protocol imap { mail_plugins = $mail_plugins quota imap_quota } and to 90-quota.conf: plugin { quota = maildir quota_rule = *:storage=100G } What else should I add to enable reporting? (without warning emails, commands changing quota and all that stuff) P.

Upgrade Dovecot Cluster 2.2 to 2.3

Hi All I’m planing to upgrade/migrate my dovecot cluster with two dovecot 2.2.36 nodes to 2.3.16. They use Maildir als IMAP backend and will continue to use that in the future. Can I just: - Install a new Server (AlmaLinux 9) - Stop dovecot on the old node-2 - Copy all the data from the old mail directory of node-2 to the new one - Install dovecot 2.3 on the new on with more or less the same config and let it run - Repeat the same with old node-1 ? Or would it be better to start of with an empty mail directory and let the other old node imapsync the data to the new one? - What would the advantage be (over the disadvantage that it may take some time to get everything synced)? I know that Maildir are just static files, so moving them to the new server should not be a problem. I’m thinking more about indexes created by dovecot 2.2.36… Are they read without issues with the newever dovecot 2.3.16 or should I consider a re-index. or something the like? thanks in advance, Steven -- https://steven.varco.ch/ https://www.tech-island.com/

Dear all, On the Dovecot website, I noticed that the IRC link isn't clickable: https://www.dovecot.org/support/ The Markdown-esque square brackets suggest to me that this should be a hyperlink, but it's just plain text at the moment. The other issue is that there is no hash symbol before the channel name, so even if it were clickable the user's IRC client would start a private message rather than join the channel. dovecot-lda from www-data - doesnt work

m trying to deliver email from a webform, but its not working. I then tried manually in the console: WORKS: sudo -u info /usr/lib/dovecot/dovecot-lda -d info DOES NOT WORK: sudo -u www-data /usr/lib/dovecot/dovecot-lda -d info sudo -u postfix /usr/lib/dovecot/dovecot-lda -d info sudo -u dovecot /usr/lib/dovecot/dovecot-lda -d info I need to be able to deliver email from "www-data" to any user on the system (that is a valid dovecot-lda mail user). It seems a security setting blocks it. I have already set authdb to 0777 in dovecot settings (because otherwise it gives an error about lookup rights), and also enabled stats-writer and stats-reader with 0666. so no more error messages in log, but the above commands that does NOT work, terminate immediately, while the working command waits for email from STDIN. No error messages in either log or on STDOUT/STDERR. What can be the problem?

With configuration "mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir", incoming mails are always saved to /var/mail/%u , which are invisible to Thunderbird. How do I configure Dovecot to save incoming mails to ~/Maildir/cur/ and ~/Maildir/new/ ? Thank you in advance! context: I replaced my host recently. Version 2.3.13 running in the old host used to correctly save incoming mails to ~/Maildir. Aggregating auth/proxy events

Hi, I'm working on aggregating event logs and trying to correlate all related events using session IDs. However, I’m struggling with some events as they're missing the session ID. 1. proxy_session_* events lack a session ID field, making it difficult to pair them with auth_request_* events. 2. when using dovecot as sasl for postfix with a unix listener, both auth_request_* and auth_passdb_request_* events are missing the session ID too. Example of the fields object for auth_request_finished when using smtp. LMTP rejecting aliased emails

Hi, I am pretty new to Dovecot and totally new to LMTP. I have normal delivery working but I am struggling with aliases. In my mail queue I am seeing things like: -Queue ID- --Size-- ----Arrival Time---- -Sender/Recipient------- E0F617055DB 720 Sat Oct 26 14:50:24 clamav(a)mydomain.com (host mail.mydomain.com[private/dovecot-lmtp] said: 451 4.3.0 <clamav(a)mydomain.com> Temporary internal error (in reply to end of DATA command)) clamav(a)mydomain.com But in my /etc/aliases, I am aliasing clamav to nick and nick(a)mydomain.com is a valid mail box that can receive normal mail. The corresponding line in the mail log is: 2024-10-26T14:55:56.385500+01:00 mail-www dovecot: lmtp(1371485): Error: lmtp-server: conn unix:pid=1371484,uid=102 [1]: rcpt clamav(a)mydomain.com: Failed to initialize user: Mail access for users with UID 107 not permitted (see first_valid_uid in config file, uid from userdb lookup). How do I get round this issue? I can drop the minimum UID to 0, but then all system users are deemed valid for mail which is not true. None of them are. Thanks, Nick

sieve crashes when two optional include scripts are missing

Hi, we've found an issue with sieve plugin. When script includes two missing optional scripts, it causes crash. For reproducing the issue, script names must belong to same hash table node, so either two scripts with same name or scripts where 'hash(name) % table->size' results in same value, like missing_a and missing_aa in reproducer below. It includes script with NULL block, returns 0 so caller cmd_include_generate does not emit anything. On second pass the above 'included' check returns first missing script, it goes through true block where it just checks flags and returns non-zero, so caller this time goes through the emit code block and the previously included NULL sblock gets referenced causing crash later. Note: despite scripts have different name, they pass the "same script" check because sieve_file_script_equals compares 0==0 dev & inode numbers as scripts do not exist. This is why scripts do not have to have same names. Side effect of this is that as missing_a and missing_aa are treated like the same script, only first one is linked in compiled svbin. Which means that if missing_aa reappears later, svbin won't get recompiled. Another manifestation of the issue is when included missing_a script is present when main script is compiled and later missina_a is removed again. During execution, script is not recompiled and it aborts for hash table dupe check: sieve_binary_open->ext_include_binary_script_include->hash_table_insert There are several ways how to solve this. I've tried a few, but there were other corner cases that appeared. One tried way was for example ext_include_generate_include in the 'if (included)' replicate the check sieve_script_is_open(...) from else block, just check flags, no include and set result to 0. Another way to solve this is to return from ext_include_execute_include early if sblock is NULL just before it tries to derefernce it, similarly as it does if it fails 'once' check. Same for dumping in opc_include_dump. Whilst the first approach seems a bit better, it won't stop crashing in existing environments as it won't trigger svbin recompilation and svbin would fail. This means that the second soultion is sort of needed anyway. This still won't solve the problem with different missing scripts as only first one would be able to trigger recompilation when file becomes available. Just including both in the mentioned function won't work either as they would still be evaluated as same and hash table anti-dupe check would trigger abort. So some changes in script comparison seem needed anyway. This is what I've used in my approach. Return early from ext_include_execute_include and opc_include_dump if sblock is NULL and change sieve_file_script_equals to compare also script->location for missing scripts (when inode is 0). Ignore specific subfolders within Maildir?

Consider Dovecot with "mail_location = maildir:~/.maildir". Is it possible to configure Dovecot to completely ignore directories like ~/.maildir/.foo ? The subdirectory .foo is created by third party software and the name cannot be changed. Because of the leading dot, Dovecot interprets ~/.maildir/.foo as IMAP folder /foo by default, creates the typical subdirectory structure with cur/new/tmp, and exposes ~/.maildir/.foo to IMAP clients. Not being able to change the name or location of .foo, I would like to tell Dovecot to ignore .foo's presence altogether. So far I have not found documentation about how that can be done (or if it can). Helpful pointers are appreciated. -Ralph

Per https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc2971.html#section-3: Servers MUST NOT deny access to or refuse service for a client based on information from the ID command. Clients MUST NOT refuse to operate or limit their operation with a server based on the ID response. Client blocking is much better handled via other mechanisms, that may incorporate ID information as a part of the decision making process but does not make a determinative decision based on that string. michael

While implementing this, I noticed that "client_id" is always nil in the lua script or I am doing something wrong. Yesterday I was told that at a customer the vacation scripts don't work anymore. Looking closer it seems the whole sieve-funtionality is missing (eg. filtering mails into folders). I am in the process of analysing, and don't have a clue yet. Editing scripts via managesieved works (for example from roundcube). The scripts are in the right place, afai understand. I compare this with another setup where things work and don't see the difference. All this worked perfectly until maybe summer. Issue with logrotate and dovecot

Something new here has cropped up, no changes to configs for some time. I've had my dovecot using the default /var/log/dovecot.log location for logging, logrotate used to back this up weekly and logging would continue using this same file. Now when logrotate runs, it correctly backs up the log but then creates a new dovecot.log-yyyymmdd file and dovecot starts logging to that. I'm at a loss as to why this is happening. My postfix and other processes are still using their correct log files, so it seems related only to dovecot. From dovecot/conf.d/10-logging.conf: # Log file to use for error messages. "syslog" logs to syslog, # /dev/stderr logs to stderr. #log_path = syslog log_path = /var/log/dovecot.log From /etc/logrotate.d/dovecot /var/log/dovecot.log { weekly rotate 4 missingok notifempty compress delaycompress sharedscripts postrotate doveadm log reopen endscript } Looks like something happened mid last month but other than periodic software updates nothing has changed for a while here. If I reboot the system, dovecot resumes logging to /var/log/dovecot.log, but as soon as logrotate runs (I did a --force to test) it logs to the new file again. Hoping this may sound familiar to someone on the list.

Struggling to get sieve running

Hi, I am new to Dovecot and Debian, but I seem to have got Dovecot up and running with local delivery and then switched to LMTP. I am running Debian 12.7 and Webmin 2.202 to try and get things running, but I've had to tweak files. Also Webmin did not install dovecot-lmtpd, dovecot-sieve or dovecot-managesieved, so I did that manually. I have tried following the configuration guide from Dovecot (but there seems to be little there) and other sources I've found on the internet, but there is nothing I have found to get sieve listening on port 4190 when checked with ss.
