[Dovecot] Problem with dovecot on home LAN

At present I get email directly on my laptop in /var/spool/mail/* through uucp. I'd like to get the email in the same directory on my desktop (alfred), and then run a mail server on the destop and collect the email on my laptop (william) (or on other computers on my two little home LANs, ethernet and WiFi). I was advised that dovecot was a good imap server for this purpose (I tried cyrus-imapd, but decided it was too complicated), so I'm running dovecot on alfred (my desktop), with the following /etc/dovecot.conf (minus comments): ============================================ imap_listen = * pop3_listen = * login_dir = /var/run/dovecot-login login = imap login = pop3 default_mail_env = mbox:~/mail/:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u mbox_locks = fcntl auth = default auth_mechanisms = plain auth_userdb = passwd auth_passdb = pam auth_user = root auth_verbose = yes ============================================ I am able to access my desktop with telnet from my laptop: ============================================ [tim@william ~]$ telnet alfred 143 Trying 192.168.1.1... Connected to alfred. Escape character is '^]'. * OK dovecot ready. x login tim <password> x OK Logged in. ^] telnet> quit Connection closed. ============================================ Unfortunately, neither fetchmail not KMail on my laptop seem able to retrieve mail from my desktop. With fetchmail I get the error message: ============================================ [tim@william ~]$ fetchmail alfred fetchmail: Server CommonName mismatch: localhost.localdomain != alfred fetchmail: Server CommonName mismatch: localhost.localdomain != alfred 10 messages for tim at alfred. reading message tim@alfred.murphy.ie:1 of 10 (765 header octets) fetchmail: fetchmail: getaddrinfo(localhost.smtp) fetchmail: SMTP connect to localhost failed fetchmail: SMTP transaction error while fetching from alfred fetchmail: Query status=10 (SMTP) ============================================ My .fetchmailrc on william reads ============================================ poll alfred proto IMAP user "tim" password "whatever" ============================================ I have no better luck trying to retrieve mail with KMail on the laptop, after adding the following entry to KMail=>Settings=>Configure KMail=>Network=>Receiving ============================================== Name: dovecot Login: tim Password: <password> Host: alfred Port: 143 Prefix to folders: /var/spool/mail/ ============================================== (I also tried with "Prefix to folders:" empty.) When I start KMail on william I get the message "Checking account dovecot for new mail", but no mail comes over, and I see no error in the log files on either machine (although I may have missed something there). I should say that I am running Fedora-3 with all programs up-to-date. Hi guys, Seems to be my week for mailing :) I am getting the following in my mail log: Dec 7 11:54:08 svr21 dovecot: auth(sql8): file mech.c: line 143 (mech_auth_finish): assertion failed: (*requests != request) Is this assert important or can I remove it from my copy of the code? [Dovecot] imaps, certificate and authentification

hello, first sorry for my poor english I'm doing the migration from UW-imap to Dovecot I have two question about the authentification in the imaps (port 993) process In dovecot .conf I can enable (or disable) the différent port (pop, pops, imap, imaps) and may be restrict the access to the serveur with the ip adresse. Can I configure dovecot in imaps so it permit the access if the certificate is knowing by the server? Actually, this is the process to authenticate in WU-imap on imaps : the client connect to the server through a tunnel SSL (stunnel) and only if stunnel know the certificate, then the client can connect. and more, Is it possible when the client (with a certificate) connect to the serveur with imaps to authenticate the user without prompting the password, so the authentication is throught the certificate ? These are similar functionnality in the apache server with the restriction access to location et authentification with certificate. thanks -- Jean-Noel

The only difference to 0.99.12 is that it now builds without GNU make. I didn't bother to change the version number so it's still 0.99.12 inside the tarball.

[Dovecot] 0.99.12-1.1.fc1.rf broken?

Hi, I dont know if this is a dovecot problem, or the rpm build, me, or my computer ;) Was wondering if anyone else has been having problems using the 0.99.12-1.1.fc1.rf release from http://dag.wieers.com/packages/dovecot/ My specific problem is this. 1. Dovecot starts 2. You can login using telnet 3. You can issue a select inbox but nothing seems to happen By this stage dovecot is spiraling out of control, using up almost all my tiny cpu's processor, when usually it uses basically nothing. What appears to happen if you look at the logs is this. ======= Dovecot Log ======= dovecot: Dec 06 10:39:48 Error: login: Authentication process 5634 doesn't exist ======= Dovecot Info Log ======= imap-login: Dec 06 12:36:09 Info: Disconnected: Inactivity [127.0.0.1] Then, I noticed that if I tried to log in again I would have multiple dovecot-auth processes churning away at my processor.... I went thru the config file, and the new one with my changes, still the same. I also restarted dovecot several times, having to kill all the processes manually as service dovecot stop didnt seem to work. Is anyone else having this problem? And do they know how to fix it? Im running dovecot on fedora core 1, using mysql for authenticating. Thanks Alex

[Dovecot] 1.0 test 52 - test 56 upgrade

Hi guys, I run a LVS cluster system which holds mail via a NFS server in Maildir format, and indexes on the local hard disks. When upgrading from 52-56 about half the index files failed to work correctly, many killing the server. Not really a problem, I just deleted them. Just thought the developer guys should know. http://dovecot.org/test/ - Lots of fixes for mmap_disable = yes. It finally seems to be working pretty well. - POP3 idle timeouts changed to 10min I just wrote a simple stress test tool for IMAP and I've had one for POP3 for some months. [Dovecot] problem with test56

Hi all, im doing some tests with the test56 release and im seeing some problems with APPEND (may be related to something else, I just see it with APPEND). When I ask someone to move some emails from one mailbox to another, after some messages (seemingly random), the client experiences a 'hang'. When tracing the process what seems to happen is that dovecot doesnt send a final OK after that specific email. It's kinda hard to attach a gdb at that point, so for now, maybe someone has seen this also? Cor

Hello, attached patches fixes some bugs in passdb cache. First patch fixes bug which causes passdb cache always return empty scheme for cached passwords. Second patch fixes dovecot-auth crash with passdb cache enabled. I'm not sure that it is proper fix, though.
