[Dovecot] virtual user question

I'm sorry if this has been asked already, but I'm new to the list and to dovecot. I'm trying to add imap to our existing setup where we host many virtual domains and would like to use dovecot to do it as I find it's one of the most configurable I've seen so far. The problem is that our virtual users passwd files are kept in seperate directories so /etc/virtual/%d/passwd, but I can't use the variable substitution in the dovecot.conf file as it results in a load error because it won't translate the %d. I'm using the latest development release, test65. I read in the config file that you can use many passdb's but do I have to put them all in there or is there a way to use some sort of substitution? The other issue I'm having is when I try to test the connection (with a hard coded path to passwd) it fails auth if I pass the username "user(a)domain.com" but passes if I pass just "user". Any help or places you can point me for these issues? Thanks, Steve

[Dovecot] dovecot don't start

hi...I've a problem with dovecot 0.99.13-3 for fedora core 3. When I start dovecot with "service dovecot start" it seems to start succesful but it is a false message. [Dovecot] new to dovecot, dealing with MH foders

Hello, I'm sorry if this is a repeat, a few choice searches into google didn't help and I found no search for the archives. I can no longer put of moving away from UW-IMAP. Dovecot certainly seems to be the right choice, but I am having problems getting it to do what I need it to for all my mail. The machine is running the dist version, 0.99.12. I have a system mailbox and a large MH mail tree (~25K messages.) I saw that dovecot didn't support mh trees like UW did. It looked like maildir would be a good common target. So I found a script that would convert the mbox to maildir and have adjusted postfix, and that all works fine. Then I found mh2maildir, and ran it over my entire mh tree. Then I tried just for a test copying one of the small top level directories under ~/Maildir, but my MUA (mulberry) doesn't see it. So how do I get dovecot to see things other than the inbox in maildir format? How can I easily test to see if it's dovecot's problem or the MUA? thanks for any help, jerry Jerry Scharf laguna way consulting

In CVS pass_query can now return "user" column to replace the username that was used to log in. Besides fixing character casing problems, it also allows login aliases.

[Dovecot] FC2 POP3/SMTP Configuration

OK, let me try this again. . . . I'm a newbie to dovecot and a little bit less of a newbie to linux. I am in the process of moving my server from RH9 to FC2. The only obstacle remaining is my email. I run dovecot (v0.99.14) POP3 and sendmail (8.12.11-4.6) with Mozilla (1.4.2 and others), Thunderbird (1.0.2) and Netscape (7.1 on PC's, etc) mail clients - mostly PC's (W2K, WXP). They all can read their mail but none of the users can send any mail. I have also tested with Outlook and it works!? Ximian Evolution (1.4.6) also works!??? Depending on the state of the dovecot.conf file, I get the following: Mar 28 16:04:14 corvette sendmail[5810]: unable to open Berkeley db /etc/sasldb2: Invalid argument Mar 28 16:04:14 corvette sendmail[5810]: unable to open Berkeley db /etc/sasldb2: Invalid argument Mar 28 16:04:14 corvette sendmail[5810]: no secret in database Why do Outlook and Ximian work and the others do not? [Dovecot] LDA Wishlist idea

Hi all, Sorry if this is out of place, but I've seen people suggesting future functionality for Dovecot on here before. TBH I'm not completely sure if this would be possible in a LDA. Demon (an ISP) have extensions to POP3 they call "SDPS" - there's basically an extra command that can be called for an email and it gives the envelope rcpt and from addresses. I was wondering if there was any chance of future versions of Dovecot allowing something similar? I just tested and IMAP doesn't ignore case either. Remove the UPPER CASE maildir created by your POP3 login then do the same thing with an IMAP client. Set up the IMAP client to use an UPPER CASE username and when you log-in/refresh folders it creates the new UPPERCASE empty Maildir all over again. Crap, between this and the missing QUOTA feature I guess I'm gonna have to rip out Dovecot and use Courier. I really wanted to use Dovecot for it's speed with the indexing. What I don't understand is -- all usernames in my test database are stored in lower case -- shouldn't it simply fail to match and cause the login to fail? Can anyone point out how to force the match to be case sensitive? I'll investigate and get back to the list. It would be "nicer" though if Dovecot converted all username input to lower case before authenticating to maintain uniqueness of email addresses.
