[Dovecot] Index corruption causes child process to die

My recent migration from Courier-IMAP to Dovecot has been marred by these errors: Oct 24 12:12:40 server dovecot: IMAP(juha): Fixed index file ~user/Maildir/.Geekzone/dovecot.index: first_recent_uid_lowwater 431 -> 430 Oct 24 12:12:40 server dovecot: IMAP(juha): Corrupted index file ~user/Maildir/.Geekzone/dovecot.index: Duplicate header extension keywords Oct 24 12:12:40 server dovecot: child 5786 (imap) killed with signal 11 They happen with Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 and I'm using Dovecot 1.0RC7 from the FreeBSD ports. I think the index corruption may be caused by Tbird's message filtering - I'm asking it to filter certain messages from INBOX to subfolders. When the error occurs, Tbird pops up an error message saying it can't connect to the mail server, but I don't lose any messages it seems. Instead, I get duplicates and even triplicates when I restart Tbird. Any work around for this? -- Juha http://www.geekzone.co.nz/juha

[Dovecot] dovecot rc7 assert, core

Hi, Wow, I haven't had an assert/core in dovecot in a long time. Here goes: Setup: Solaris 10, dovecot built with gcc 4.1.1, imap and imaps only. User's home directory lives on a ZFS filesystem, but I don't think that makes a difference. So does every other user here (>3K). Assert: IMAP(mulepri): file message-body-search.c: line 393 (message_body_search_ctx): assertion failed: (input->v_offset <= part->physical_pos) gdb backtrace and other poking at the core is attached. [Dovecot] NFS

I've finally managed to run Dovecot without errors in two computers with maildir and indexes stored in NFS. I added a page to wiki about this: http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS Suggestions how to keep attribute cache enabled but to allow Dovecot to specifically request not to use a cached value (when it's important) would be welcome.

[Dovecot] MAILDIR environment

from docs/mail-storages.txt: "Also as a special case, if MAILDIR environment exists, maildir storage is used with the directory specified in it." Forgive me if this seems obvious, but is this talking about setting MAILDIR as an enivornment variable? I have it set on my system in both /etc/profile and ~/.bash_profile: MAILDIR=/path/to/maildir/ export MAILDIR and have confirmed this worked by running 'echo $MAILDIR'. I've logged the user in question out and then in again, as well as restarting dovecot but it still defaults to checking ~/Maildir when the user logs in. Setting the location using default_mail_env is not an option here as I need the fallback behaviour that occurs when default_mail_env is not set. Any advice appreciated.

[Dovecot] Redundant shared mail store?

Hi guys I'm about to embark on a project replacing a legacy single mail server running proprietary software with a cluster of Dovecot servers. We clearly need a shared mail store for these servers, but we are not happy with simply using a server running NFS as this becomes a single point of failure. What have other people used? AFAICT our options are: * A shared block device (Fibre Channel, iSCSI, ATAoE etc) running GFS or similar to allow multiple servers to access it concurrently * Two or more NFS units, either with built-in support for replication of FS changes and failover, or with scripts for achieving this functionality I prefer option 1, although it's expensive. [Dovecot] BUG: passdb checkpassword {} and lastauth file

If checkpassword interface is used for working with vpopmail, function vpopmail "Record time and ip of last auth attempt" (--enable-auth-logging option for configure) won't work - the file "lastauth" is created in Maildir, but does not contain ip-address. If I had correctly understood, dovecot woldn't have set a enviroment variable TCPREMOTEIP for vchkpw. If changes are made in auth/passdb-checkpassword.c (a patch in attachment), everything will work. Probably, the patch is incorrect and does not solve all problems, however the request is to pay attention to existence of the problem. Also it is possible, that a similar problem exists with other variables TCP UCSPI protocol (http://cr.yp.to/proto/ucspi-tcp.txt) P.S. [Dovecot] Problem with rc10

I just upgraded our test server from rc6 to rc10... ISSUE #1 I noticed that we no longer are getting two "From_" lines. However, the one that was good (had the original sender e-mail address) is now gone. The one with "dovecot.deliver" remains. I attempted to add "-d test" to the mailbox_command line in main.cf as follows: mailbox_command = /opt/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/deliver -d test and things turned ugly and caused Postfix to defer messages: Oct 17 16:31:50 hostname postfix/local[7230]: D14632C9C: to=<someuser@somehost>, relay=local, delay=3.6, delays=3/0.02/0/0.62, dsn=4.3.0, status=deferred (temporary failure) I removed the "-d test" from the Postfix main.cf and the problem went away. So, how do I fix the "From_" lines? ISSUE #2 After upgrading, messages cannot be moved from the INBOX to a folder. Thunderbird claims there was an internal error and to consule the server logs, but I see nothing in the dovecot logs that would indicate what's going on. For example, I attempted to move a message into my Trash folder which did not currently have any index files. [Dovecot] quota plugin enhancement request

Hi am having a small issue with the quota plugin In Squirrelmail when a message is deleted, it seems to be copied to the Trash folder *before* it is deleted from the current folder. However if it is a large message being deleted and the mailbox is close to its quota limit, it means dovecot will deny the copy operation as the quota will be exceeded if the message is copied Because of this, I am wondering if it is possible to have an option for the quota plugin to track, but not enforce the quota. This is because I don't require quota enforcement on IMAP, as Postfix will enforce quota on incoming mail anyway. I hope this makes sense... Michael

Hi all, Using dovecot's LDA (debian backports package: 1.0rc2), users who have exceeded their quota when receiving messages see the message get bounced. This works fine for us, however, the sender is sent a message as follows: -- Start bounce text ERROR This is the Postfix program at host foo.domain.com I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below. For further assistance, please send mail to <postmaster> If you do so, please include this problem report. You can delete your own text from the attached returned message. The Postfix program <user(a)foo.domain.com>: Command died with status 11: "/usr/lib/dovecot/deliver" -- End bounce text Is it not possible to specify something a bit more civil for the sender? a "User is over quota" message works much better here. We're already running a script which notifies users when they approach a certain specified % that they're about to exceed quota, however, hoping they all comply is another thing entirely.
