Hi Borthers/Sisters Thanks for all the developer(s) and for all the hard work spent on build this great piece of software! I loved Dovecot since it is really easy to set up and really fast but I am really new to it (only 2 weeks and half). Right now, our server configuration is: Server: Apple Xserve G5 dual RAM: 4GB Number of Users: ~ 150 IMAP only users Authentication: LDAP Mailboxes sizes: ~200GB Dovecot version: 1.0 Beta 5 (I am looking forward to beta 7 that was released today) Email client software: mostly Thunderbird 1.5 Right now, we are experiencing occasional problem with imap users unable to connect to the server. With beta 3, we had to restart the dovecot/imap processes almost every 3 hours. with Dovecot beta5 we still have to restart the processes but it seems to occur every 3 days (Friday and Yesterday) and only in a peak time (around 3pm). I am waiting to occur it again and I will be able to grab more information about the number of processes, users, virtual memory, etc, etc. So, at this point, I don't have much information to debug the problem. Let's wait. I guess we have here a nice machine (xserve) and not a huge number of users (~150). So, I would expect that our server would handle the load. But having to restart Dovecot once a while, as I described, is not an option (users are getting frustrated). :( Maybe with Beta 7 with the feature "Added shutdown_clients setting to control if existing imap/pop3 processes should be killed when master is" can stop our nightmares :) By the way, our dovecot.conf is basically the default sent with the software. We haven't changed much there! Meanwhile, I'd like to know, if possible, whar are you using to run Dovecot like hardware, OS version, number of users and problems that you are experiencing. I'd like to compare with my setup and if it is the case, migrate to pure Linux or FreeBSD if it is more stable than OS/X! Best Regards, Flavio Domingos - San Francisco/CA -

[Dovecot] Error 127 / dovecot-auth problem?

Hello everybody! I try now since 2 days to get Dovecot working. First i tried it with apt-get install dovecot-imap dovecot-pop3 (Debian Sarge), but couldn't start it, syslog told: Apr 15 17:04:05 wpc2386 dovecot: Dovecot starting up Apr 15 17:04:06 wpc2386 dovecot: Auth process died too early - shutting down Apr 15 17:04:06 wpc2386 dovecot: child 1310 (auth) returned error 127 Apr 15 17:04:06 wpc2386 imap-login: fd_send(-1) failed: Broken pipe Apr 15 17:04:06 wpc2386 imap-login: fd_send(-1) failed: Broken pipe Apr 15 17:04:06 wpc2386 pop3-login: fd_send(-1) failed: Broken pipe Apr 15 17:04:06 wpc2386 last message repeated 2 times Because there's "(auth)" i tried to start dovecot-auth manually to see what happens, and i got this error-message: /usr/lib/dovecot/dovecot-auth: error while loading shared libraries: libmysqlclient.so.12: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory A "find / * | grep libmysqlclient*" gives me a list of libs, but not a libmysqlclient.so.12. [Dovecot] Sieve Filtering?

I am wanting to set-up some basic sieve filtering on our Dovecot 1.0b7 box. Is this possible in 1.0b7? I'm completely new to sieve filtering so a basic dovecot sieve filtering how to would be fantastic! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Gavin

[Dovecot] Quota again

Hi, quota is now working well, except that both quota-fs and quota-maildir is showing incorrect values. I have to use this patch to get correct numbers. I _know_ it's totally wrong, and that the cause have to be something else, I just want to know if this is something with my setup, or what? With these changes the values are correct (Indeed the quota-fs is correct, the quota-maildir is at least better...) I'm setting up a new server with dovecot 1.0b7. Whenever I try to connect with a mua (thunderbird or outlook) I get this error in the log: kernel: pid 53279 (pop3), uid 15008: exited on signal 6 Apr 14 10:52:54 dovecot: POP3(williams): Unrecognized event: kevent {.ident = 2, .filter = 0xfffffffe, .flags = 0x0001, .fflags = 0x00000000, .data = 0x00004000} Apr 14 10:52:54 dovecot: child 53279 (pop3) killed with signal 6 The system is freebsd 6 with maildir in nfs mounted home dirs. Any ideas on what the problem is?

[Dovecot] configure option to add QUOTA to IMAP CAPABILITY?

I'd really like to see a configure option to add "QUOTA" to the CAPABILITY response. I always forget to modify configure and add it manually when compiling new versions. Thanks! Steve

Fixes, mostly: * The login and master usernames were reversed when using master_user_separator (now the order is UW-IMAP compatible). * Killing dovecot master process now kills all IMAP and POP3 processes also. + -a parameter to dovecot prints now all settings that Dovecot uses. -n prints all settings that are different from defaults. + Added pop3_lock_session setting + %M modifier returns string's MD5 sum. Patch by Ben Winslow - PLAIN SASL authentication wasn't working properly, causing failed logins with some clients (broken in beta4) - Fixes to Maildir++ quota, should actually work now - Don't crash if passwd-file has entries without passwords (eg. deny=yes databases) - Fixed prefetch userdb to work nicely with other userdbs - If master process runs out of file descriptors, don't go to infinite loop (unlikely to have happened unless the OS's default fd limit was too low) - Fixed non-plaintext password lookups from LDAP. Patch by Lior Okman - %U modifier was actually lowercasing the string. Patch by Ben Winslow

Servers: 2 SuperMicro single-Xeon (dual-capable) 2.8, 1gb RAM, mirrored SATA boot Storage: 1 SuperMicro dual-Zeon 2.8, 2gb RAM, 600GB RAID5 SATA shared via NFS over GigE OS: RHEL 4 Users: 10,000 mostly POP users, SquirrelMail IMAP Auth: MySQL Maildir size: daily averages about 50gb Dovecot version: 1.0 beta 5 Client Software: squirrelmail, outlook, outlook express, thunderbird, eudora, Apple Mail, Claris Emailer, and other odd clients too numerous to mention This system is intentionally over-engineered, to replace the single server Courier-IMAP system that it replaced. Load on each Dovecot/ SquirrelMail server is very low and allows for a lot of growth. Our incoming MTA is Exim, on another pair of SuperMicro machines writing to the same NFS over GigE. -- Roger J.
