[Dovecot] dbmail benchmarking

I thought I'd try benchmarking with dbmail (v2.2.4) to see how much slower a SQL backend could actually be. Skip to bottom for the conclusions. Originally I ran the tests with the databases being in XFS filesystem. MySQL's performance was horrible. It went 3-7x faster with ext3. MySQL 5.0.30 backend (innodb): ./imaptest clients=1 - append=100 seed=1 secs=30 msgs=1000000 logout=0 Logi Sele Appe 100% 100% 100% 5% 1 291 303 So that's 10 messages/sec saved. So apparently there's some PostgreSQL-specific bug in dbmail. This is most likely because dbmail doesn't have a cache equivalent to dovecot.index.cache so it has to do the fetches the slow way. I would have liked to also run the generic tests with more than 1 client, but then I start hitting dbmail bugs and the test stops (reported already to their bugtracker).

[Dovecot] OS X Mail Administration

I'd like to request some feed back from any OS X Mail Admins on the list, please. Currently running 10.4.9 here using postfix / dovecot and I'm about to take the plunge from mbox to maildir. I just migrated from uw-imap to dovecot. As you're aware, users inbox's are customarily stored in /var/mail/% username and personal folders under /Users/%username/Library/Mail/IMAP. I'd appreciate if you'd share with me the directory structure that you use, or would use in my situation. All mail storage will be on the server so disk space is not an issue. I'm a bit confused whether or not to keep the inbox separate from the other imap structure as is the OS X default: should all mailboxes be under inbox, etc. Your input would be appreciated. [Dovecot] Login with firstname.lastname instead of loginname

Some of our users use to login as firstname.lastname or firstname.lastname(a)charite.de instead of using the "correct" "flastname" login name. In order to get this behaviour a long-gone co-worker wrote an authdaemon.pl, which speaks the courier-authdaemon protocol. How can I emulate this behaviour with dovecot? Looks like in Cyrus, sorting by Received date is faster than sorting by the Sent header date because of the way they use the index and cache files... http://www.emaildiscussions.com/showpost.php?p=419246 Is this the case in Dovecot as well? Bill

[Dovecot] deleted Messages don't go into Trash Folder always

Hi all, most of the time deleted messages aren't moved into trash folder but go into nirwana. Sometimes it works correctly. But a restart does not guarantee this function. This effect exists with different imap clients. Can anybody help please. [Dovecot] Deliver sending bounces from 'MAILER-DAEMON@'

Hello, I'm having a problem with postfix and/or dovecots "deliver". I'm getting these lines in the mail log: | Apr 24 11:42:08 smtp2 postfix/qmgr[6176]: 05BAE3B67E: from=<>, size=3055, nrcpt=1 (queue active) | Apr 24 11:42:08 smtp2 postfix/qmgr[6176]: 05BAE3B67E: to=<MAILER-DAEMON@>, relay=none, delay=0.01, delays=0.01/0.01/0/0, dsn=5.1.3, status=bounced (bad address syntax) After some debugging, it seems that those lines in the log appear if I send mail to an account which is over quota. (I'm using the Maildir++ quota) This is from my dovecot.conf: | protocol lda { | postmaster_address = MAILER-DAEMON(a)my.domain.tld | mail_plugins = quota | auth_socket_path = /var/run/dovecot/auth-master | hostname = my.mail.server | sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail | } It seems to me that dovecot is sending bounce messages from 'MAILER-DAEMON@' .. Does anyone know why this is happening, or how I can specify the address to be used? I'm using dovecot 1.0.0. -- Erland Nylend
