deliver appears to copy "^From " header lines from stdin when delivering to Maildir. The header filtering in mbox-save.c prevents this when delivering to an mbox and instead a synthesized "^From " header is written. This is an issue when using, for example, Postfix and mailbox_command = /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver which does not appear to have an option not to write a "^From " header on the mailbox_command input. I'm attaching a patch that adds a save_header_callback() along the same lines as in mbox-save.c but I'm really not sure this is the right way to do it.

[Dovecot] Binary packagers: BSD license issues

Adding this SHA256 code made me read the BSD license once again. It says: * 2. [Dovecot] IDLE with inotify problem

Hi, I recently switched from courier imap to dovecot. With courier I had a working IDLE setup that informed me immediately when new mail arrived. With Dovecot it is different, sometimes i get an immediate result but most of the time it takes a rather long time for the notification to return to the client. For testing purposes I set mailbox_idle_check_interval = 1 and i now get the same behaviour as with couier (a new mail immediately causes a notification) but i am not sure that this is the right solution. Reading the comments in the config files I was under the impression that this is not needed if dovecot uses inotify. Setup: Kernel 2.6.22.1 with inotify dovecot 1.0.3 from debian unstable Build options: ioloop=epoll notify=inotify ipv6 openssl So my question is can I check that dovecot is actually using inotify? [Dovecot] maildir rename_subfolders() and listescape interaction

I'd like to flag a problem we are observing that looks like it is caused by the listescape-plugin.c. I realize that this plugin is not part of the standard Dovecot 1.0 distribution but I would appreciate any insights or suggestions for fixes that anyone is kind enough to offer. The problem concerns subfolder renames when used in conjunction with Maildir folders (I've not tested this against any other folder type). Seemingly the only relevant log entry is @4000000046d70d8f1f72b66c dovecot: Error: IMAP(pod): rename(/srv/mail/home/test0/pod/Maildir/.a/b, /srv/mail/home/test0/pod/Maildir/.c/b) failed: No such file or directory Note the response to tag 05 in each case. The 06 list response in the listescape case is not unexpected given the nature of the failure. My initial reading of rename_subfolders() from maildir-storage.c suggests that the calls through maildir_mailbox_list_init() and maildir_mailbox_list_next() are returning "external" style names (i.e. ones that present "/" as the hierarchy separator) to rename_subfolders(), which is an "internal" helper function. This is supported by the logged error message. I am afraid I am yet to get my head around the actual code path and the escaping and unescaping that is going on so am not able to suggest a fix as yet.

[Dovecot] deliver assertion failure

Deliver from latest 1.1 HG with sieve also from latest 1.1 HG is dying with an assertion failure when it delivers to my mailbox. Other mailboxes on the same system are unaffected, but I can read my mailbox fine through IMAP. [Dovecot] Dovecot 1.0.3: mbox problems for newly created users

Hi, I am having problems with Dovecot 1.0.3 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.6 when using a new user account without any mbox files present. Directory /home/$user/.imap_mail/ does not exist when Thunderbird first tries to login using IMAP to the account. On login this directory is created with a zero byte Trash file and .subscriptions containing string "Trash", so far, so good. Now I create a new message in Thunderbird and save it as draft. A zero byte file "Drafts" is created in /home/$user/.imap_mail/ but the message I wanted to save got _lost_, /home/$user/.imap_mail/Drafts stays at zero bytes. The next message I try to save as draft finds its way to the Drafts mbox however. Please note that no /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox has been created although a inbox is shown in Thunderbird. When I move the saved message from Drafts to the inbox folder shown in Thunderbird, it gets saved in /var/mail/$user instead of /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox, I guess this is due to the use of the mbox_snarf plugin, right? /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox is the maildrop for Exim, which handles incoming mails, but in this scenario the user did not receive any emails yet. If I manually create /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox, then moving a message from Drafts to the Thunderbird-displayed inbox works. How to fix this problem? Especially messages getting lost is really bad because I am in the process of changing our mail server setup from Exim/UW-Imapd to Exim/Dovecot, where I have to move 100+ /var/mail/$user mbox files to /home/$user/.imap_mail/inbox. But when Dovecot can not properly save files to previous non-existing mbox files, like Drafts, this is really a problem. [Dovecot] Migration woes from tpop mbox to dovecot maildir

I was hoping some one might be able to offer me some advice on a little problem I have. I am looking to A. move from mbox to maildir B. looking to move from tpop to dovecot to bring both pop and imap under the same program. anyways the problem I am having is this tpop3d mbox uses MD5 sum of the mailbox headers in hex which is option %m in the uidl section but the problem is when dovecot convert plugin runs and makes in a maildir it fails to find the md5 of this because it is only used for mboxs. if I change this from %m to %Mf it downloads every message on the clients computer which is not desirable. I was thinking only options i have is to allow it to download all them mail and or write a script to convert it to maildir or another pop servers uidl. but i dont know much about how other pop servers generate there headers. so I was hoping maybe some one has done something similar to this or could offer some input. thanks -Chris The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material. [Dovecot] dirsize quota assertion problem

Our current virtual mailbox configuration is not compatible with one of the assertions in the dovecot quota plugin's assertions in quota-dirsize.c. I believe the assertion is incorrect, but I would also be happy if I could get the same result with a better configuration setting. Here is a sample passdb entry which causes the quota assertion to fail: test(a)example.com:<snip>:3007:1000::/usr/boxes/username/example.com::userdb_mail=mbox:~/test^/.imap:INBOX=~/test userdb_uid=3007 userdb_gid=1000 userdb_home=/usr/boxes/username/example.com userdb_quota=dirsize:storage=100 The imap folder is "~/test^/.imap" and the INBOX is "~/test". As you can see, these are in different locations, but the INBOX string happens to be a substring of the imap folder directory. An example of the failed assertion error: Aug 31 16:44:13 www2 dovecot: IMAP(test(a)example.com): file quota-dirsize.c: line 180 (quota_count_path_add): assertion failed: (!is_file) This particular error log line was generated by dovecot 1.0.3, but the code in quota-dirsize.c is the same in dovecot 1.1 alpha3's version of quota-dirsize.c: 131 if (strncmp(count_path[i].path, path, strlen(path)) == 0) { 132 /* the new path contains the existing path */ 133 i_assert(!is_file); 134 count_path += i; 135 break; 136 } First, quota_count_path_add() is called for directory "~/test^/.imap" and it succeeds. When it is subsequently called for file "~/test": - the strncmp matches because "~/test" is a substring of "~/test^/.imap" - the assertion fails because "~/test" is a file and not a directory It seems to me that instead of asserting !is_file, it would be better to simply skip the conditional in that case, since a path variable that is a file should never be tested to see whether it contains an existing path. if (!is_file && strncmp(count_path[i].path, path, strlen(path)) == 0) { /* the new path contains the existing path */ count_path += i; break; } But this also has a bug: if path is a directory which substring matches count_path[i].path, but the same path with a directory separator appended to it does not substring match count_path[i].path, then it is a different path and does not contain the existing path. For example, if count_path[i] is the directory /usr/home/test/mailbox_folders, and path is the directory /usr/home/test/mailbox, then /usr/home/test/mailbox does not contain/usr/home/test/mailbox_folders, and this condition should fail. If some other code were to enforce that /usr/home/test/mailbox be terminated with a directory separator, then this is not a problem and my patch should work. I hope this makes sense. [Dovecot] "pipe() failed: Too many open files"

I am getting random disconnects from my imap session, dificulties to revconnect, very sluggish behaviour when changing between mail folders also frequent and rapidly repititive messages on te client "mailserver x.x.x.x is not a imap4 server" I am running dovecot 1.0.rc2 from ports on OpenBSD 4.0 on a PIII, 500MHz 512MB My set up is very small - a webserver with a single imap account on it for myself and my wife and a pop3 account for a printserver. The clients are both Thunderbird on Linux (Ubuntu7.04 and Ubuntu 6.06 I have overall maybe 6000 mails distributed over all folders.
