[Dovecot] Spliting Folders for Efficiency

Dear Timo, Would there be any sense in giving Dovecot the option to split folders into multiple subfolders when they reached a specified size (probably message count) limit? Dovecot would monitor folders and when they reached, say, 10,000 messages, silently split the folder on the filesystem to ensure that access remains fast. I know that Dovecot scales very well but this would give practically unlimited storage capability and also keep things fast. You could even have it so that the latest 100 messages are kept in their own folder for fast access. .Folder.new .Folder.cur .Folder.tmp could become: .Folder__1.new .Folder__1.cur .Folder__1.tmp and .Folder__2.new .Folder__2.cur .Folder__2.tmp with Dovecot merging them before display as just "Folder" within the mail client. This could be further extended so that Dovecot could be configured to store 'old' message folders in a separate location. We could then have slower+cheaper+larger storage mounted so that 'old mail' does not take up the expensive local SCSI disks on the machine. Mail from 2 years ago is much less likely to be accessed than mail from the last week. This would provide very neat behind-the-scenes archiving functionality. [Dovecot] compressed mbox patch

[Dovecot] Feature Missing OUTBOX Folder

Hi Dovecot People, i have switched my system from courier-imap to dovecot and iam quite happy with it, the performance is well and i had nearly no problems. One little feature iam missing is in Courier i had a folder called "Outbox" there i could paste mails which i want to sent out. In some networks its not always available to sent mails via port 21, i know i could just set up my email server to another port but it was a nice feature. Is this a big afford or is it just alittle hack ? could it done via a little plugin ? Thanks Timo & all others for the great work ! Frank

[Dovecot] Bug? Expunging Symlinked Maildir w/ Lazy_expunge Enabled

Hi all, Using Dovecot 1.0.3 on RedHat Enterprise 5 (kernel 2.6.18-8.1.6.el5PAE), and NFS storage, we symlinked a Maildir folder: /mailstore/user/Maildir/.Junk -> /junkstore/user/Junkmaildir Everything works fine, until we try to expunge, which produces: A04 NO BUG: Unknown internal error This only happens if "lazy_expunge" is enabled: mail_plugins = quota imap_quota acl lazy_expunge lazy_expunge = .EXPUNGED/ .EXPUNGED/ .EXPUNGED/ Lazy_expunge works great on non-symlinked folders. We tried version 1.1 alpha2, which actually crashes in this scenario. The only fix we've found is to disable "lazy_expunge". Attached is our "dovecot -n" config. Anyone have an idea what might be causing this or a workaround? Thanks! [Dovecot] sieve discard

Does the keyword/action discard work by default or is there something I have to do in the configuration to get to work... maybe I missed something on http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sieve I have the following rule: if anyof ( header :contains ["Subject"] ["Test Discard"] ) { discard; stop; } but it delivers to INBOX with or w/o the "stop;". If I change the rule to if anyof ( header :contains ["Subject"] ["Test Discard"] ) { fileinto "spam"; stop; } the message will deliver into my spam folder which makes me think I am doing something wrong with "discard". Using 1.0.2 sieve plug-in. Thanks.

[Dovecot] BUG: messages created with permissions not respecting umask

Using dovecot 1.0rc15, together with postfix and dovecot-lda. umask is set to 0007. This should ensure directories and files get created with read/write permissions for both user and group. However, dovecot-lda writes files with 600 permissions, instead of 660. So dovecot does not seem to respect the umask configuration property for local mail delivery. In my particular case, I have vmail:vmail own the mail directories, and a backup user part of the vmail group. However the backup user cannot read the mails and thus back them up properly. Suggestions: - respect the umask for file delivery as well - alternatively, take the parent directory's permissions, strip executable bits, and apply to file Thanks Thomas

Hi, before I start to write a lengthy email about something that isn't really possible anyway: can I make Postfix use Dovecot's LDA and start it with different user IDs? My scenario: Dovecot authenticates users for Postfix and itself using Postgresql. Mails for two domains should be stored under /srv/<domain>/<user> (which is the location returned by my user_sql query and mail_location). When my clients login (with usernames of the form 'user@domain'), Dovecot creates/opens the correct mailboxes for them, but I can't get LDA to deliver to these mailboxes. Whatever I try, I am always running into some kind of permission problems (either for the mailboxes, or for auth_socket). I want to use a unique UID for every virtual domain, so I guess LDA needs to have permissions for every corresponding mailbox *and* Dovecot's auth_socket_path. Is there a good solution for this which doesn't involve severe security implications? J. -- If all my friends had Playstations I would buy a Nintendo to prove my individuality. [Dovecot] imap memory footprint rather large

Dear list, I am experimenting with a new mail handling setup and it involves a single IMAP folder with just under 70'000 messages. When OfflineIMAP connects to the server, the imap process starts to eat up a lot of memory: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 15607 madduck 35 19 283m 244m 239m D 16.9 49.3 0:09.96 imap On the contrary, when "online" client, such as Thunderbird connect, memory usage is around 10m, which is entirely acceptable. The way offlineimap reads may is by FETCHing metadata, then APPENDing new local mail, SEARCHing for the UIDs of each uploaded mail, and finally FETCHing new remote mail. Memory use seems to be O(n) in the size of the folder. On the folder with 70k messages, dovecot seems to allocate 280m of memory, which it then fills to about 70% during the metadata FETCH, and then keeps growing while APPEND/SEARCHing the new local messages. The 70k mailbox is just short of 600Mb in size on disk. Dovecot uses 280Mb to serve it. Is it possible that dovecot is reading too much into memory, or over-optimising? Can I somehow tweak this to lower the memory footprint?
