[Dovecot] Sieve vacation not working

I've been trying all night to get vacation working in my .dovecot.sieve file. The way our email works is we have one account on dovecot which serves my mail and my wife's and we use procmail and sieve to put the emails in different folders depending on who it's for. I'm trying to set up a vacation reply on my wife's email address (aaaaaaaa@optus* below) so people can update to her new address. I removed .dovecot.lda-dupes and that didn't help; so then I touched it and now it's a 0 byte file and that didn't help. There is no dovecot.sieve.err file and I can't see anything in /var/log/dovecot.log which gives any message about why this wouldn't work. The emails to aaaaaaa@optus* get filed into the right folder so I know the matching is working. I've also tried a reject recipe and that worked fine, so I know that it can send an email if it chooses to. So it's a complete black box mystery as to why it just won't send a reply. Regards, Phill

Hello I have been playing with some exotic authentication scheme with Dovecot and PAM. That involves sending really large base64 encoded data as the IMAP password, and I have hit a line limit in Dovecot, with AUTH_WORKER_MAX_LINE_LENGTH set to 1024. This limit is especially frustrating since other parts of the software use much larger limits: MAX_INBUF_SIZE 4096 MAX_IMAP_LINE 8192 AUTH_CLIENT_MAX_LINE_LENGTH 8192 I had to make the patch attached below to get my authentication working. I can live with this local patch, but given the much more liberal limits of MAX_INBUF_SIZE at 4096 makes we wonder if this 1024 limit on AUTH_WORKER_MAX_LINE_LENGTH could not be a bug. Or is there a security concern at using more than 1kB? Opinions? [Dovecot] dovecot 1.2.3: TB fails to unsubscribe folder after deletion

Hi, I'm running dovecot 1.2.3 with "imap_client_workarounds = tb-extra-mailbox-sep" and noticed that after deleting a folder (moving to Trash and emptying it on exit) that folder in Trash still keeps subscribed. I think the reason for that behavior is that the call for mailbox_list_set_subscribed() in imap/cmd-subscribe.c (line 84) is fed with the original mailbox name and not the stripped version in verify_name. Assigning verify_name to mailbox in the workaround-conditional fixes this issue for me. I'm not very familiar with C programming but while tracing cmd_subscribe_full() I stumbled upon another thing. In mail_namespace_find_mask() (lib-storage/mail-namespace.c at line 413) mailbox is reassigned with a local string (not t_strduped). I think this might be a problem when mailbox is dereferenced after returning from that function?! .max

[Dovecot] Can't connect to auth server

I'm trying to phase out procmail and move to dovecot-sieve instead. It ain't proving easy. I'll describe my setup: - Centos 5.2 box with dovecot 1.1.4 and dovecot-sieve 1.1.6 from ATrpms. - A single user account is used to store all our email (the account is called maildb). - Getmail is being used to fetch the email from various ISP mailboxes. I want to deliver mail to different folders in maildb's Maildir/ depending on who the email is addressed to (the procmail recipes currently do that). - Getmail destination section looks like this: [destination] type = MDA_external path = /usr/libexec/dovecot/deliver arguments = ("-d", "maildb") allow_root_commands = true - When I run getmail I get this error in dovecot.log: deliver(maildb): May 04 22:15:26 Error: Can't connect to auth server at /var/run/dovecot/auth-master: No such file or directory It's true that I don't have a file called auth-master. I guess I should have but until I started this dovecot-sieve work it was never a problem. I have no idea what that file should look like. As I installed from binary RPMs I would have thought one would have come with the install. Can anyone help? Regards, Phill

Today is my first day with sieve, so be gentle :) I'm trying to set up a pretty webmail interface to our Dovecot 1.2.4 server using roundcube. The managesieve config + roundcube 'managesieve' plugin work fine, and I'm able to use roundcube's UI to generate .dovecot.sieve files. [Dovecot] Scalability plans: Abstract out filesystem and make it someone else's problem

This is something I figured out a few months ago, mainly because this one guy at work (hi, Stu) kept telling me my multi-master replication plan sucked and we should use some existing scalable database. (I guess it didn't go exactly like that, but that's the result anyway.) So, my current plan is based on a couple of observations: * Index files are really more like memory dumps. They're already in an optimal format for keeping them in memory, so they can be just mmap()ed and used. Doing some kind of translation to another format would just make it more complex and slower. * I can change all indexing and dbox code to not require any locks or overwriting files. I just need very few filesystem operations, primarily the ability to atomically append to a file. * Index and mail data is very different. Index data is accessed constantly and it must be very low latency or performance will be horrible. It practically should be in memory in local machine and there shouldn't normally be any network lookups when accessing it. * Mail data on the other hand is just written once and usually read maybe once or a couple of times. Caching mail data in memory probably doesn't help all that much. Latency isn't such a horrible issue as long as multiple mails can be fetched at once / in parallel, so there's only a single latency wait. So the high level plan is: 1. Change the index/cache/log file formats in a way that allows lockless writes. 2. Abstract out filesystem accessing in index and dbox code and implement a regular POSIX filesystem support. 3. Make lib-storage able to access mails in parallel and send multiple "get mail" requests in advance. (3.5. Implement async I/O filesystem backend.) 4. Implement a multi-master filesystem backend for index files. The idea would be that all servers accessing the same mailbox must be talking to each others via network and every time something is changed, push the change to other servers. This is actually very similar to my previous multi-master plan. One of the servers accessing the mailbox would still act as a master and handle conflict resolution and writing indexes to disk more or less often. 5. Implement filesystem backend for dbox and permanent index storage using some scalable distributed database, such as maybe Cassandra. This is the part I've thought the least about, but it's also the part I hope to (mostly) outsource to someone else. I'm not going to write a distributed database from scratch.. This actually should solve several issues: * Scalability, of course. It'll be as scalable as the distributed database being used to store mails. * NFS reliability! Even if you don't care about any of these alternative databases, this still solves NFS caching problems. You'd keep using the regular POSIX FS API (or async FS api) but with the in-memory index "cache", so only a single server is writing to mailbox indexes at the same time. * Shared mailboxes. The filesystem API is abstracted, so it should be possible to easily add another layer to handle accessing other users' mails from both local and remote servers. This should finally make it possible to easily support shared mailboxes with system users.

Hi, I just read that http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4978 ..is being implemented in Thunderbird 3. This is great news! It's been a long time since we last discussed this and I don't think it's currently implemented in Dovecot, but since Cyrus just added it, any chance of getting support in Dovecot please? (Fastmail seems to be supporting this effort) On a similar note we had a previous thread about supporting TLS deflate - any chance you could investigate this again and add support on the Dovecot side so at least it would be feasible to submit a bug fix on the Thunderbird side? (It looked like a one liner change back when we last discussed it?) [Dovecot] dovecot-auth stops responding

Running dovecot 1.2.4(imap only) on AIX out of inetd. I accept passwords(PAM for auth) and kerberos tickets. Occasionally we see dovecot-auth stop responding. I just kill it off and another process is spawned which works fine. It doesn't look like it is hitting any ulimits(11MB for memory). I issued a kill -11 and ran it through the debugger. Hi Dovecot fails to chdir() into users home directory giving the following error: Oct 9 16:43:49 jura dovecot: dovecot: Fatal: chdir(/a/home/mina) failed: Permission denied (euid=1118 0(mina) egid=11332(devel) missing +x perm: /a/home) Oct 9 16:43:49 jura dovecot: dovecot: child 14441 (imap) returned error 89 (Fatal failure) The reason seems to be that user primary group is "devel" and directory /a/home has ACL which gives execute permission only to the users in "domain users" group. Now the catch is that the user _is_ member of "domain users" group and is happily accessing his home directory over CIFS(Samba) for long time. Also, the user has no problem entering his home directory when using shell access. It just seems like the user lost membership of a bunch of supplementary groups. The group membership info is coming from M$ PDC via winbind and NSS. We have few users and can change the users primary group and/or relax the /a/home directory ACL, but overall this is not right. Shall I shut up or can we hope for a fix or at least explanation? hi All, I have a srange problem. Before dovecot there was a courier imap and it worked just fine. The client(s) are the same then before, so I think, this is an server side problem. I have a user with Outlook and he uses pop3 and leaves messages on server. Sometimes the messages get downloaded again, when he starts the outlook. Not all, but 7-9 hours back. uidl format is like it's suggested: pop3_uidl_format = %08Xu%08Xv Any idea, what's wrong and what I can do? Thank you very much, tamas

[Dovecot] Thinderbird+delete+move to Trash folder

hi All, I have a problem, which makes me headache. I can't find out, what is the problem. I have a mail szerver, which works just fine as expected, TB move messages to trash folder after I delete it, and they are moved. I have an other server. If I delete a message, it doesn't move to the Trash folder. As deleted_to_trash plugin is installed, if I only mark messages as deleted, they are moved to thee Trash folder and also with Outlook works well. It's like when a messages is deleted from TB, the message get moved to the Trash folder, and it's expunged(?) at the same time. Is it possible? Could you help me? The system is Ubuntu 9.04 with docecot 1.2.5-0~auto+0 from http://xi.rename-it.nl/debian/, but builded by myself for x86_64. Thank you, tamas

[Dovecot] Two different issues with dovecot 1.1.13

Hi Timo, I'm using Debian backports.org dovecot-imapd, 1:1.1.13-2~bpo50+1. I've got two different issues, a reoccurring, seemingly harmless one about "Corrupted index cache file" (boring.txt) and one that went bonkers over the least few days (bt.txt) causing much spamming of the logs. I've made bt.txt stop happening by just rm'ing dovecot.index* : find Maildir/ -type f -name 'dovecot.index*' -print0 | xargs -0r rm ... which I realise may not be the most helpful thing to have done from your point of view. Anyway I just wanted to let you know about both of these. If one or both are already known about or already fixed by a later version of Dovecot, great and sorry for the noise! If not, and you want any more information etc., let me know. [Dovecot] fts squat non-english search for 2 words

Hello, It looks I encoutered a bug or misconfiguration. fts_squat search for subject and body works excellent for English mails. For non-English (in particular, Russian) it works only when query consists of 1 word. Phrases - 2 and more words - always returns nothing. Example: search for "planet" ("планета") returns results, search for "Earth" ("Земля") also returns results, but "planet Earth" ("планета Земля") returns nothing. But there are emails having exact phrase "planet Earth". This problem occurs only for non-English queries, both for search in subject and in email body. I tried web-mail Horde 3.2 and Thunderbird. I turned fts plugin off and it correctly finds phrases with 2 and more russian words! So problem is squat. Is it a bug or known config issue? Hi, sometimes mails that i discard via sieve gets delivered to my inbox and i can not figure out why. So i hope you can give me a hint. My setup is: I use a self compiled dovecot 1.2.4 with installed sieve and managesieve plugin. Incoming mails a processed by Postfix and the delivered to Procmail. Procmail invokes Spamassassin and discard all mails marked as spam. The other mails are passed to Dovecot deliver this way: :0 w | /opt/dovecot/libexec/dovecot/deliver For moving mails to subdirectorys this works always, but not for mails that are discard via Sieve. Examples are: if header :contains "List-Id" "git.vger.kernel.org" { if header :contains "Subject" "[ANNOUNCE]" { fileinto "Announce"; stop; } if header :contains "Subject" "[ANN]" { fileinto "Announce"; stop; } if header :contains "Subject" "[PATCH" { discard; stop; } fileinto "Lists.Git"; stop; } or if header :contains "Organization" "web.de" { discard; stop; } This often works, but sometimes it fails. Procmail reports then that deliver reported an error (but not which) and delivers them to my inbox. There are also no message in dovecots or dovecot delivers log file. Dose anybody have an idea? Dear list, First of all, I am French so excuse my bad english. I am currently using dovecot proxy feature, using sql backend. I "proxy" the imap/pop requests to another server, let's say server2. On server2, I use a script to keep up to date a "pop before smtp auth" database. I used mail_executable = /path/to/this/script.sh ... My problem is: the $IP environment variable on server2 is the proxy's IP. How could I give a variable from proxy to server2, or simply get the real client public IP ? [Dovecot] sieve 0.1.14: vacation encodes Subject twice

Hi! I noticed the following problem in dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.14: The following vacation causes trouble with the Subject line: if not exists ["List-Id", "List-Post"] { vacation :days 7 :addresses ["test(a)netcologne.de"] :subject "=?utf-8?b?w4TDlsOc?= sadasd" "Bin gerade nicht hier."; } As you can see, the Subject is already MIME encoded according to RFC2047. Starting with sieve 0.1.14 the subject is now encoded by sieve again, so I get the following in my vacation mail: Subject: =?utf-8?q?=3D=3Futf-8=3Fb=3Fw4TDlsOc=3F=3D?= sadasd As you can see, the RFC2047 encoding is RFC2047 encoded, which results in an unreadable subject. According to RFC5230 section 4.3 this shouldn't happen: The ":subject" parameter specifies a subject line to attach to any vacation response that is generated. UTF-8 characters can be used in the string argument; implementations MUST convert the string to [RFC2047] encoded words if and only if non-ASCII characters are present. Implementations MUST generate an appropriate default subject line as specified below if no :subject parameter is specified. If I understand this right, sieve should do the RFC2047 encoding only if the string is non-ASCII. But the RFC2047 encoded string is already ASCII, so it should not be encoded a second time. I just compared this with sieve 0.1.13, which behaves different: It does not encode the Subject header at all. As long as the managesieve client (in our situation Horde/IMP) encodes the subject, everything works correct, while we run into trouble with 0.1.14. I think that there needs to some mechanism in sieve that checks whether the subject contains non-ASCII and does the encoding only in this case. I just checked out, that 0.1.14 does not encode a non RFC2047 encoded 7bit subject, while a 7bit subject starting with =?utf-8?... is encoded twice. This could maybe explain some of the coredumps im seeing in 1.2.7? This is on Debian/Lenny, using NFS spool and NFS control/indexes. Timo, you asked in private mail a few days ago if we're sure the filenames are forever unique. Im sure. I double checked it in the source code. Out of a user population of 4000, I get about 20 of these dumps a day, so it's not major issue, but I thought I'd follow up. Hi everyone, I'm trying to make quota to work in dovecot 1.0.rc15 in a Debian machine. Setting the limit to 1GB and starting to fill up the mailbox and nothing stopped me. It just kept growing and nothing happened. Restarted the service and nothing. I had already exceeded the 1 GB limit and nothing happens, the mailbox still goes bigger and bigger... The *"check_quota"* plugin for squirrelmail shows "0.0% of 1.0GB" in my browser. 1GB is exactly what it is defined in dovecot.conf by maildir. Is it necessary to configure something in postfix? How to disable lazy_expunge for certain mailboxes? My problem is I have a public namespace, whose mail is on a different filesystem than user mails. Some users are allowed to expunge on this shared mailbox, but lazy_expunge is stopping that from working since the mail has to cross a filesystem boundary to make it into the lazy_expunge namespace (location is under the user's home directory). As a workaround can I run a daily cron job to remove messages with the \Deleted flag on them? If so how do I find them? thanks -frank

[Dovecot] Issue Authenticating to a new dovecot-postfix installation

(Apologies if this is a resend, but I thought I had received a bounceback message.) I have installed dovecot-postfix and postfixadmin on an Ubuntu 9.10 machine. The userdb and passdb are both mysql. If I set up a user in postfixadmin they are able to send. I can successfully telnet into the server remotely by name on 110 and 25. I'm not looking for any authentication encryption/ssl any of that, just POP3/SMTP. When I telnet into 110 I can enter a username with user [username] then when I do pass [password] I get -ERR Authentication failed. I know the user info is correct. When I set up an account in Outlook Express I get "There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected:" Also saying -ERR Authentication failed.'. (0x800ccc90,0x800ccc92) So basically the same thing. I can attach the tutorial I used in as a .doc if that would help. They refer to dovecot.conf though. The config file is clearly dovecot-postfix.conf so I am confused as to why the other matters. I had noticed changes only when I changed dovecot.conf though. (In dovecot -n output)

[Dovecot] Quota with Dict + SQL not updating

Hello all, I have a Dovecot server deployed with a MySQL back end. If the user logs in and there is no quota set for them in table 'quota', the system will automatically inset a line with their username and current messages/storage. However after this it fails to update the information when to reflect new messages coming to their inbox after the original insert of the information. It will only update the information when a user deletes a message. Why is it not updating this information every time their mail is checked with IMAP? Cheers, Michael
