[Dovecot] Problem Authenticating with Master User

Dovecot provides a master login (a master user name and password that can log into all user accounts). I've setup Dovecot as per: http://wiki1.dovecot.org/Authentication/MasterUsers Here's my problem. The only way I can authenticate successfully is if I try to authenticate through telnet twice. Also, imapsync (the tool I need to use to migrate over emails from Dovecot to other mail server) won't work because of this. $ telnet mail01.server.com 143 Trying 10.10.10.12... Connected to mail01.server.com. Escape character is '^]'. * OK Dovecot ready. 1 login user(a)server.com*master my_password 1 NO Authentication failed. 1 login user(a)server.com*master my_password 1 OK Logged in.

Hi all, first of all, I must say that I am pretty new to mailing lists, so please, if I do something wrong, just tell me. Now, my problem. I'm migrating a mail service from a temporal to a definitive server. Both servers have the same versions (Postfix, Dovecot -1.0.7, POP3 & IMAP services-, MySQL) and it all works perfectly. The only problem is with the users that store their mail on the server; on the testing, when I check if there is new mail, I download the mail stored on the new server once more. After that, it works correctly (no more unwanted downloads), but I need to avoid that first download. I have been investigating before writing to the list. I have checked that UIDL are the same on both servers, and the configuration is exactly the same except for the name of the server; I have seen in few places that it may be the cause for downloading thdovecote mail again, so I changed the name of the new server to the old's one, but it happened again. I know that lots of servers are migrated every day, and never heard about those problems, so I suppose it must be a solution for this, or maybe a better way to configure the servers. Is it possible to allow master users to be authenticated against PAM? Something like: passdb { driver = pam #args = /etc/dovecot/passwd.masterusers master = yes #pass = yes } and then have a userdb which qualifies what accounts are master accounts but doesn't have passwords? Thanks, Jonathan

Hi Robert, Many thanks for your reply. I realized that the title of my email was not explaining my exact problem. My problem is not the creation of the folders. I am happy with the folders created by RoundCube. I am confused why Outlook can't write to the Sent Items folder. Logically Outlook, TB or any other email client must have permission to write the sent mails to the chosen sent mail folder on an IMAP server without any problems. Am I wrong? [Dovecot] how to limit size of dovecot.log

I've done some searching and maybe I'm missing something... I have a remote dovecot and postfix server running on debian 5. I then have a local fetchmail server that retrieves email from the dovecot server via pop3s every 5 minutes. The problem is that the /var/log/dovecot.log file has grown to be over 1.1GiB over a period of less than 1 year. Is there a way to limit the size of the dovecot.log file, or do I have to run a monthly cron job or something to take care of it for me? Thank you, Aaron Johnson

Hi, I am trying to use dovecot as lda. I have put this line in my .qmail-default file: #|/var/qmail/bin/preline -f /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-lda -d $EXT@$USER It is working correct with real addresses but couldn't find forwarding addresses. What is the recommended way to move a message from one mailbox to another using CLI - serverside commands ? Since IMAP does not support transactional moves between mailboxes - The only thing that comes to my mind is this operation: 1) extract message from mailbox A using "doveadm fetch" 2) inject message into mailbox B using "dovecot-lda" 3) expunge message from mailbox A using "doveadm expunge" it this the right solution ? One problem with above approach is that injecting through "dovecot-lda" will trigger the sieve script - which I'm not interested in since the message have already been injected and processed once before - at delivery...
