[Dovecot] service_count=0 for imap and pop3
by Mark Moseley 15 Nov '10

15 Nov '10

This is copy-pasted from Timo's comment in the "Todays Performance Data for 2.0.x" thread, but I didn't want to hijack that thread. In it, Timo says: <snip> service imap { service_count = 0 } (i.e. reuse imap processes) reduced the system CPU usage to almost nothing. But if you use different UIDs for different users you can't do that. </snip> Is that safe to do in imap and/or pop3? Or at least no more insecure than using service_count=0 for imap-login and pop3-login? Since I saw that comment I've been googling around and grepping the wiki but I can only find instances of using it with "service imap-login", not "service imap" or "service pop3". The mention in Timo's comment that it reduces the CPU usage by a lot got my attention, esp for pop3. We're already using service_count=0 for pop3-login and imap-login.

[Dovecot] proctitle woes with 2.0.7 vs. 2.0.6
by Clemens Schrimpe 15 Nov '10

15 Nov '10

Hello - I just noticed, that there seems to be a change in the way "process titles" are being set between 2.0.6 and 2.0.7: Behavior of 2.0.6: (ps aux | fgrep dovecot) ------------------ root 30803 0.0 0.0 601540 708 ?? S 1:08AM 0:00.00 dovecot/log _dovecot 30802 0.0 0.0 601544 624 ?? S 1:08AM 0:00.00 dovecot/anvil root 30801 0.0 0.0 600460 472 ?? Ss 1:08AM 0:00.01 /usr/local/sbin/dovecot _dovecot 30819 0.0 0.0 607304 1672 ?? S 1:08AM 0:00.01 dovecot/auth [0 wait, 0 passdb, 0 userdb] _dovenul 30818 0.0 0.0 603512 1724 ?? S 1:08AM 0:00.01 dovecot/imap-login [10.11.12.13] root 30805 0.0 0.1 601776 3640 ?? S 1:08AM 0:00.02 dovecot/config Behavior of 2.0.7: ------------------ _dovecot 35104 0.0 0.0 607308 1676 ?? S 1:11AM 0:00.01 dovecot/auth _dovenul 35103 0.0 0.0 603516 1736 ?? S 1:11AM 0:00.01 dovecot/imap-login root 35099 0.0 0.1 601780 3652 ?? S 1:11AM 0:00.02 dovecot/config root 35097 0.0 0.0 601544 716 ?? S 1:11AM 0:00.00 dovecot/log _dovecot 35096 0.0 0.0 601552 692 ?? S 1:11AM 0:00.00 dovecot/anvil [4 connections] root 35095 0.0 0.0 600464 460 ?? Ss 1:11AM 0:00.01 /usr/local/sbin/dovecot (of course the configuration remained 100% identical - I just compiled 2.0.7, again using the same ./configure parameters and did a "make install") It seems, that while anvil has gained some verbosity, auth and imap-login (and maybe pop-login) seem to have lost their "voice". Is there any intention behind this or did I ran into a "bug"? Greetings from Berlin - Clemens

http://dovecot.org/releases/1.2/dovecot-1.2.16.tar.gz http://dovecot.org/releases/1.2/dovecot-1.2.16.tar.gz.sig Just some small fixes. - imap: Fixed SELECT QRESYNC not to crash on mailbox close if a lot of changes were being sent. - pop3: Fixed a potential hang - mbox: Creating new mailboxes should base permissions on mail root dir, not always use 0600. - auth: Disable auth caching entirely for master users.

[Dovecot] Local node indexes in a cluster backend with GFS2
by Aliet Santiesteban Sifontes 15 Nov '10

15 Nov '10

Hi, all this days I'm testing a dovecot setup using lvs, director and a cluster email backend with two nodes using rhel5 and gfs2. In the two nodes of the email backend I configured mail location this way: mail_location = sdbox:/var/vmail/%d/%3n/%n/sdbox:INDEX=/var/indexes/%d/%3n/%n /var/vmail is shared clustered filesystem with GFS2 shared by node1 and node2 /var/indexes is a local filesystem at the node, so each node has his own /var/indexes stuff on ext3 and raid1 for improving performance, I mean each node a different /var/indexes of its own. Now, if the director was using node2 for the email for user1 and I removed node2 now all the connections for that user are redirected to node1, that node has its local /var/indexes, when this ocurr I can not see the emails that in fact are in the mailboxes, I guess should be indexes not current with the user mails. Is supposed indexes to be rebuilt automatically when the node switches?? Or I have to configure the indexes in the shared storage so the two node update the information concurrently? I will appreciate your help... best regards
