[Dovecot] Chrooting dovecot.

Greetings, I have installed Dovecot under FreeBSD 5_3 It is pretty impressive. I got SSL working with no problem for both imap and pop3. Besides that I do still want to chroot Dovecot. I noticed that there are some options in the dovecot.conf that are intended for this. Unfortunately online resources on how to do that can't be found on google. Although I'm running the server as user dovecot. I still do have this: dovecot pop3-login 491 1 tcp4 10.0.1.4:995 *:* dovecot pop3-login 490 1 tcp4 10.0.1.4:995 *:* dovecot pop3-login 489 1 tcp4 10.0.1.4:995 *:* dovecot imap-login 488 1 tcp4 10.0.1.4:993 *:* dovecot imap-login 487 1 tcp4 10.0.1.4:993 *:* dovecot imap-login 486 1 tcp4 10.0.1.4:993 *:* root dovecot 481 5 tcp4 10.0.1.4:993 *:* root dovecot 481 6 tcp4 10.0.1.4:995 *:* Fine for the first six lines it's doing what it's doing. But the last two lines are running as root. That is why I want to chroot the server. I would like if anyone can point me to some howto or notes on how to do so. Had a small error with the current CVS version. It was in deliver.c. Here's a fix. [Dovecot] Checkin 1.37 of src/lib-storage/mail-storage.c

Checkin 1.37 of src/lib-storage/mail-storage.c added a parameter to mailbox_open() but this broke building src/deliver/deliver.c as revision 1.2 doesn't use the new parameter. It looks like save_mail() of src/deliver/deliver.c calls mailbox_open() and it looks like it might work fine if it were to use a (struct istream *)0 as the third parameter (instead of the flags) -- but I don't use deliver [yet], so I don't have any adequate way to test this. -- Internet Connection High Quality Web Hosting http://www.internetconnection.net/

[Dovecot] mbox zlib compression plugin

Some people have been asking this forever, but because it wasn't possible to implement it as a plugin, I hadn't done it. Now, due to some API changes for other purposes, it was suddenly easy. So, if you want to try it, grab the latest CVS code / nightly CVS snapshot and http://dovecot.org/patches/1.0/zlib-plugin.tar.gz Compilation instructions inside zlib-plugin.c file. What it does is check if mbox name ends with ".gz", if so it opens it as read-only using zlib. If the file isn't actually zlib compressed, zlib seems to be able to still access it as a normal file (but it's still read-only). It should be possible to implement it for maildir files as well by hooking into mail_get_stream().

I'm a newbie to dovecot and a little bit less of a newbit to linux. I am in the process of moving my server from RH9 to FC2. The only obstacle remaining is my email. I run sendmail with netscape mail clients - mostly PC's. They all can read their mail but none of the users can send. Depending on the state of the dovecot.conf file, I get the following: Mar 28 16:04:14 corvette sendmail[5810]: unable to open Berkeley db /etc/sasldb2: Invalid argument Mar 28 16:04:14 corvette sendmail[5810]: unable to open Berkeley db /etc/sasldb2: Invalid argument Mar 28 16:04:14 corvette sendmail[5810]: no secret in database I know I must be missing something, probably trivial. Does someone have a simple, easy-to-read, config file for dovecot pop running with sendmail? Thanks

Hello, I have some problems. I am getting the error: Mar 28 21:24:01 APOLLO imap(alex(a)mydomain.nl): Failed to create storage with data: mydomain.nl/alex What is wrong with it? I think it has something to do with the rights or something. Can anyone tell me what to do? Thank you, Alex
