[Dovecot] dovecot-auth leaves zombies

Hi all, I have installed and configured dovecot on two different machines, so I don't have much experience with this server. One installation is giving me serious problems, that I have a hard time tracing. From the beginning: the machine is a debian mix (stable/unstable) dovecot 0.9.11, real users authenticated via pam_ldap/nss_ldap. It serves ~70 users, all of them using Outlook, Outlook Express and IMP. The system seems to work just fine for a while, but after a some time, some dovecot-auth zombies start appearing. I can't really understand who/what is causing them. The only thing I see in the logs are these lines, very sporadically, but I still couldn't trace when they happened. Nov 5 09:52:14 csv-mail-01 apache2: nss_ldap: reconnected to LDAP server after 1 attempt(s) After a while dovecot stops authenticating and needs to be killed and restarted (/etc/init.d/dovecot stop takes some time to actually stop dovecot processes). Do you have any clue of what is going on and where I can investigate further? I would like to say 'it's Outlook's fault', but I really can't. Any hint appreciated. regards stef

matthias thnx a lot for your hint. We are 2 admins on this box and this makes things complicated. /home 's permissions where 705 and that's the reason for this. What are the permissions of the / and /home directories? ls -lad /home -- can dovecot execute the / and /home directories? If these are drwx------ or similar, that might be the problem. hello all i run dovecot as my imap server on my university and squirrel as webmail. But squirrel returns an error: ERROR : Connection dropped by imap-server CAPABILITY i tail my /var/log/dovecot and this is the output with whatever user i try to log in and view mails: dovecot: Nov 13 17:51:27 Fatal: chdir(/home/epp719) failed with uid 2975: Permission denied dovecot: Nov 13 17:51:27 Error: child 17554 (imap) returned error 89 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- i give the: root@(host edited):/root# ls -lad /home/epp719 drwx---r-x 4 epp719 users 368 2004-11-13 17:49 /home/epp719 and directory exists i tried also changing permissions on dir but same things happen. both .qmail and Maildir exist in the home directory. I attach the dovecot.conf file... any help is appreciated! PS: Sorry about my english its not my native language.. oh i forgot squirrel gets data and attachments from mysql...

[Dovecot] make error

Can anyone help with this? I get the following error when running "make". "configure" worked fine. I am installing the latest dovecot on a Solaris OS10 machine make: Fatal error: Command failed for target `all-recursive' **** Error code 1 Also could someone tell me if it is possible to search all the archives through the complete message bodies or are we limited to searching each month individually and only on the message subject? When I run this: /usr/local/sbin/dovecot -c /etc/dovecot.conf I get this Fatal: Can't use SSL certificate /etc/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem: No such file or directory But in my conf file these are commented out?? #ssl_cert_file = /usr/share/ssl/certs/dovecot.pem #ssl_key_file = /usr/share/ssl/private/dovecot.pem Why would I get this error? [Dovecot] pop3d keeps downloading messages over and over again

Solaris 9 SunOS 5.9 Generic_117171-11 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-250 gcc version 3.3.2 dovecot-0.99.11 compile options: LDFLAGS=-L/usr/local/ssl/lib CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/local/ssl/include/openssl ./configure --prefix=/opt/dovecot --disable-ipv6 --with-file-offset-size=32 --with-mem-align=4 --with-rawlog --with-ssl=openssl OK, this applies whether or not a user account is set to leave mail on the server or not. There are several things that might happen, depending on who knows what: 1. Mail pops fine. 2. The "DO NOT DELETE THIS EMAIL" keeps downloading over and over again. 3. All emails since the switch to this new test dovecot pop3d will be downloaded over and over again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Gordon Thagard

[Dovecot] duplicate woes

Hi, I have FC2/Sendmail/Dovecot default setup. I turned on POP3 and POP3S in /etc/dovecot.conf. I started out getting duplicates only when I was using Outlook w/ 'Leave copy on server' option. [Dovecot] Popping without home directories

Hello there I tend to e-mail user accounts to my servers with /sbin/nologin and /dev/null as their shell and home directories respectively. I have discovered that Dovcot does not like it when a user does not have a home directory. Obviosly the user POP3 and not IMAP! :P Is there a work around for this? I have a suspicion it is one of the chroot option, but I do not know the meaning chroot. Thanks Andre

[Dovecot] Possible Bug

Okay in dovecot.conf I set the fallowing settings log_path = /var/log/dovecot info_log_path = /var/log/dovecot Then I setup log rotation for that file (using logrotate). But after it does the rotation. Dovecot dies. Now I know why this happens. But should it ? To over come this I now have it set to stop dovecot and start dovecot after it's done dealing with the log file. -- Chris L. Franklin --
