Hello, I'm getting the following error while Mozilla Mail is downloading >4000 emails: The RETR command did not succeed. Error retrieving message. Mail server xxx responded: Message is deleted. So what's the error? Can't I retrieve a message, that has been marked as deleted before? If the Mesage-ID wouldn't exist, the error message would be different. I don't know what Mozilla Mail is doing and on which message id it is failing. Also, there's no output in the logfiles. Any ideas? Regards Marten

Hi, we recently switched from Imap-Uw to Dovecot as a pop3 server. I was wondering why people who have the flag 'Leave messages on server' in their email client (Outlook, Outlook Expres) that they receive duplicates of their stored mail? Is it because Dovecot doesn't know that the messages has already been popped by Imap Uw or is the email client which thinks there are new messages on the server and if so..how can I avoid this behaviour? hi, i'm newbie to dovecot. lately i install postfix on a server for providing mail service. however, i encounter a problem in receiving mail, i.e., to get mail download to the remote client. [Dovecot] miugrating mail to new server

Hi All, I've just a new server to help with migration of our email, the old email server is using mbox and the new is using Maildir. I've managed to some user mail migrated fine. The new server is only a temp server as I have too many users to migrate easily in one go(Also I want to nuke the current mailserver, remove SuSE and install Debian on it). So what i'm doing it moving users one by one to temp server and converting to Maildir. My question is. I notice that all email files in maildir format end with .<host> when I go to migrate everything to back over to the original server is this going to cause me problem? Ie will the original server now have to be named the same as the temp server so that the maildir format files end with the same .<host> or does that not matter? Any help, advise would be great. Gabe

Hi, I am running Dovecot (dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.1 on centos 4) and we are switching from newer machines. I copied all usernames from /etc/passwd,/etc/group and /etc/shadow to the new machine. I do not want that every user has it's own /home/$user directory.. I've recently upgraded from test53 to test73 from a source compile on FreeBSD 5.3, and am getting some [BADCHARSET] errors in 73 that I wasn't getting in 53 (specifically with Squirrelmail). When I run one of Squirrelmail's built-in filters, I get the following error: ERROR: Could not complete request. Query: SEARCH CHARSET ISO-8859-1 UNSEEN Subject {14} *****SPAM***** Reason Given: [BADCHARSET] Unknown charset Googling around, I found the admonition on the wiki about chrooted environments: http://wiki.dovecot.fi/moin.cgi/QuestionsAndAnswers#head- e146cada4e103a4a93a736998c64f23b1a8cd312 so I disabled all chroot directives in my config and ran as root, just to see if that was the error. No luck. When running configure with "./configure --with-mysql --with- storages=maildir --with-ssl=openssl", I noticed that I got this error regarding iconv: checking for iconv... no, consider installing GNU libiconv Oddly enough, I do have libiconv-1.9.2 installed in /usr/local: /usr/local/lib/libiconv.a /usr/local/lib/libiconv.so@ -> libiconv.so.3 /usr/local/lib/libiconv.so.3 /usr/local/include/iconv.h and an iconv -l shows support for the charset in question. I tried adding the prefix directive to configure: ./configure --with-mysql --with-storages=maildir --with-ssl=openssl -- with-libiconv-prefix=/usr/local and got the same message. I presume that 53 picked up iconv headers and libraries from LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and now 73 isn't getting it even set explicitly -- I see some ChangeLog entries for iconv files in dovecot source in May, but nothing more. How can I verify that dovecot compiled with libiconv support? Anyone else see the same thing? Thanks, Sean

Hi all, I'm testing dovecot 1.0 on a tru64 v5.1 and on a rhel3 platforms. I've a problem when I use outlook 2003 to download mails: outlook stop responding and hang-up when I use imap protocol. Someone have the same problem? What should I do? [Dovecot] GSSAPI support status

Hi list! I'm wondering, what is the current status of GSSAPI (krb5) support in Dovecot? I know from googling that there used to be a patch for it around a year ago, but I haven't seen a trace of that patch ever since, and GSSAPI doesn't even seem to be mentioned in the Dovecot source tree (at least not according to "grep -irl"). Is GSSAPI planned at all, as it stands? If not, is there a way for me to get my hands on the original patch, so that I can fix it up for the current version of Dovecot? I'm eagerly waiting for the day that I can switch from UW-IMAP to Dovecot, but I don't want to until I can get GSSAPI authentication. Thanks for reading! Fredrik Tolf

[Dovecot] "Angle" address with empty "display name"

Some clients are sending from addresses like <someone(a)somewhere.org> i.e. without a "friendly" name. It seems to me from RFC2822 that you should either have "Display Name <someone(a)somewhere.org>" or just "someone(a)somewhere.org" (both without the quotes). Dovecot, not unreasonably, treats "<someone(a)somewhere.org>" as having an empty Display Name, but this seems to confuse at least one client - our webmail ;) - which then displays "?" for the "from" address. The patch below tries to make dovecot treat empty display name as non-existent display name (so that the IMAP "ENVELOPE" command responds with "NIL" instead of "" in the relevant places). Hi all, i installed Dovecot 0.99.14. Everything works fine except that the mysql setup directive "user_query" seems to be ignored - however the password_query works. Instead the default user query in db-mysql.c always takes effect. Might this be a bug or is something worng wit my setup below? (To keep on working i changed the default query in db-mysql.c..) [Dovecot] dovecot.index.cache 1/3rd of INBOX size

I've noticed that my dovecot.index.cache file has got very large (24MB, which is more than 1/3 of my INBOX size). I've tried deleting (well, renaming) the dovecot.index.* files, and re-opening my INBOX, and the new dovecot.index.cache is only 90KB so far. I'm using dovecot-1.0-stable and mbox format. My mail_cache_fields and mail_never_cache_fields are set to the default. Looking back in the list archives, I found a message from Timo that suggested the cache entries are created for each message when the indexes are created, rather than when each message is accessed, so it ought not to grow? What happens when a message is deleted? I "strings/grep" ed through the dovecot.index.cache file and it looks like it's not caching any headers it shouldn't (like Received, X-Spam-XYZ etc.), but they seem to occur multiple times for each message. None of my other dovecot testers seem to have huge cache files (yet!). Anybody else seen this? [Dovecot] Compressed maildir

Greetings, I noticed a while back someone posted a patch/plugin that allowed Dovecot to use compressed mbox files. I'm now wondering how far that would put us from having compressed maildir? I have a server with more CPU than disk space, and while I can buy more HDD space, my backup solution doesn't make that practical. It seems to me that when looking for a message file, if it ends in .gz unpack it, and otherwise everything acts as normal. Worst case, this is one strcat() and a stat() slower to find. Newly delivered messages could remain unpacked, and a cron job could come by whenever to compress old/large/un-looked-at-for-months messages. So, new and frequently referenced messages would be as fast as ever, and older messages would be slower. I would love to dive in an do this myself, but 1- my time is very very limited, working two jobs, and 2- I'm not running 1.0 yet, as it apparently still doesn't support my Thunderbird users tagging their messages (am I wrong? please tell me I'm wrong... Poking around in the code for dovecot-stable seems to indicate that support has been added for the {SSHA} password scheme. This is not reflected in dovecot-ldap.conf. Is the SSHA code actually functional? Thanks! -Ben

If you have an mail in your maildir 'new' directory, and use another method to delete that email (for instance pop it through another pop server), dovecot will continue to report that email as being on the server. So if you had 1 email, delete it through pop, dovecot will continue to say that 1 email is on the server, even if you disconnect/reconnect. If that same email is in the 'cur' dir (so its been read), this doesnt happen and dovecot will report 0 emails. Cor

hi, wondered whether some people tried dovecot and openmailadmin ? http://www.openmailadmin.org "openMailAdmin is a little administration interface to IMAP mailservers." "openMailAdmin works with most of the popular MTAs, such as Postfix or Sendmail, and with almost every complete IMAP-server, i.e. Cyrus or Courier" a google-search didn't show any useful results so far, i'm just curious whether some people already tried it with dovecot (of course i can try it myself, but quite busy currently)

[Dovecot] customflags and keywords

OK. After checking the 0.99->1.0 migration documentation, it seems I've been a little confused between customflags and keywords. (Though this is partly due to my repeated requests for clarification being ignored.) The page (http://wiki.dovecot.org/moin.cgi/UpgradingDovecot) says 1.0 does not use .customflags any more. Now, I'm hoping they're still supported, in which case I'm curious to know where those details ARE stored? If 1.0 does support custom flags in a usable way, I'll migrate next week (with Andrey's gzip patch applied :) -- Curtis Maloney cmaloney(a)cardgate.net

Is it possible for dovecot to strip realms and force lowercasing of usernames? We have a lot of dumb customers who try logging in to pop3 with crap like UsERNAmE and bla(a)nonexistentdomain.com. All our usernames are lowercase and we have no realms. Trying to get hundreds of customers to fix this is hard and is a significant and costly support burden. It would be nice if dovecot could handle this in some way. -Dan

Hopefully doesn't break anything. And other stuff: - COPY shouldn't crash anymore with 64bit systems - If PAM modifies username, keep it - When auth workers died they leaked file descriptors in dovecot-auth - Auth workers were leaking memory for each request - Make MySQL connect abort in 10 seconds if it can't connect - 32bit UID/GIDs were truncated to 31bit value - dovecot-auth reports cache hits and misses on SIGUSR2
