[Dovecot] Check if a message has attachments

Hi all, my question is not specific to Dovecot but to the IMAP protocol in general. I'm working on a web based software that provides a simple webmail ( http://modoboa.org/) I'm wondering what would an efficient way to detect if a message (or a group of messages) has attachments. I know it certainly consists in checking for specific MIME constructions but how to achieve that without fetching the whole body for each message? Thanks in advance, Antoine Nguyen

[Dovecot] Running two different versions of Dovecot (was: making folders unmovable)

OK, so I decided to go ahead and just upgrade to the latest 1 series Dovecot and see if that solves my ACL/config issues I've been having. (I tried compiling 2.0.9, but it errored out and I assume that's because it's a pretty old machine/compiler.) Anyway, 1.2.16 compiled fine, and I installed it in another location from the currently running 1.1 series install. I have this new install running (IMAP) on a non-standard port while I test it out, and it starts fine and all seems well. However, I'm wondering, is it OK to run it and have it look at the same Maildir mailboxes as the currently running 1.1 series install? Does that have the potential to mess with indexes or change anything in a bad way? (FWIW, I tried it briefly, and after changing the port number in and restarting my mail client [Thunderbird], it had trouble pulling up the mailbox I was trying to access.) David

I can see no noticeable time discrepancy when I do periodic time checks from the command line comparing against another system's clock - certainly not 2 minute error margin Could this be a time mismatch between imap client & server? [Dovecot] email addresses as usernames with Kerberos

Hi, I was trying out Kerberos authentication with som sample users for Dovecot and stumbled into this problem: The user names are of the form local-part@domain, so the Kerberos principal becomes "local-part\@domain@REALM". But it seems Dovecot (1.2.9) doesn't understand that syntax. Looking at the 2.0.8 sources I guess it's not supported. But isn't this a valid Kerberos principal? Is it a bug, or a missing feature or is there a special reason for not supporting it ? kind regards, Peter

NTP is running and not complaining about clock drift. Vmware recommend appending 'divider=10 clocksource=acpi_pm' kernel boot options to prevent timekeeping issues, which I've done. Well, I just noticed this in my logs after I re-loaded the latest Dovecot config I tried: Jan 13 15:09:45 mail dovecot: SIGHUP received - reloading configuration Jan 13 15:09:45 mail dovecot: read(imap dump-capability process) failed: Interrupted system call Jan 13 15:09:45 mail dovecot: Invalid configuration, keeping old one Jan 13 15:09:45 mail dovecot: child 2085 (unknown) returned error 82 (Internal logging error) It's apparently been doing this every time I've reloaded the config, so this is probably why none of my changes with the ACLs are working. :/ Any thoughts on what could be causing this kind of error?? Does that error just basically mean something's set wrong somewhere in dovecot.conf? David

The 3.x branch is rock solid. There have been no crashes (yet!) Would DRBD + GFS2 work better than NFS? While NFS is simple, I don't mind experimenting with DRBD and GFS2 is it means fewer problems?

[Dovecot] Denying authentication

Hello, I've been running dovecot for over 3 years now and it works with no problems. I have it setup so that it authenticates users against Active Directory via LDAP and so far no problems. What I would like to know is if there is any way that I could deny access for users trying to access email via cellphones or email clients outside the company. I can close everything since there are a few users that need to get emails from outside the company via cell phone of email clients. I was thinking if there was a way to lets say create a group in AD named: "remote-email" that will allow connection and authentication from any network, any user not in that group will only be able to authenticate if the source is 192.168.xx.xx/24. Is this possible? Maybe not with Dovecot, but maybe someone else has any ideas..? Thanks -------- Romer Ventura

[Dovecot] Making shared folders "unmovable"

I have set up an area of shared folders with Dovecot 1.2 that is accessed by several people (by way of one account, and everyone who logs in sees these same folders), and the only problem with this setup is that occasionally somebody moves one of the folders underneath another folder or somewhere else in the folder structure, and this sometimes disrupts some automatic procmail filters and the like. Is there a way to keep folders in a shared setup such as this "static" or "unmovable" so that the users can't disrupt the structure? Like, where the folder structure itself can't be changed, but new messages can still come in to the folders? David

[Dovecot] How do folk . . . Aggregate system mail from LAN machines?

List, good evening, Running Dovecot for external email, but not yet worked out how (best) to aggregate 'system' mail from other machines on the LAN. By system mail, I mean mails generated by the OS or by applications, and addressed to root, or 'some admin user', etc. Ideally, these would be seen by 'root' or 'some admin user' or whoever on our existing Dovecot/IMAP system. Our scale is not large, we only have 5 servers on the LAN doing various things. I wondered how other Dovecot users do this. I've thought of 3 possibilities: 1. Install Dovecot on each LAN machine, and use Fetchmail to retrieve the messages using POP so that local mail stores were emptied. 2. Perhaps, use a 'forwarding' mechanism of some sort on each LAN machine, but that would require an MTA on each LAN machine, would it not? 3. I wondered whether /etc/alias, mentioned in a recent post by Simone Caruso, might help though again, presumably, requiring an MTA on each LAN machine. What do you do? regards, Ron

I just updated MySQL to Server version: 5.5.8 on my FreeBSD-8.2 system. Now Dovecot refuses to run. Prior to this, dovecot had been running for several years without a problem. Dear all, I am attempting to enforce quota with Dovecot 1.2.15-3 using LDA for deliver. I use smtp-source (postfix) to deliver large messages but the quota is never noticed. The webmail interface is Roundcube, and the admin is performed using Postfixadmin. I have not looked into the postfix portion for quota, yet. Is there something that I have missed from the configuration? [Dovecot] Refilter Mailboxes via Sieve - Missing delivered-to header

Hello, i already read http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/RefilterMail but it won't work here :( I have many old mails in my folders and need to refilter many of them. But there are many mails without a delivered-to-header. What can i do? Error: Configuration error: envelope_recipient specified header missing (delivered-to:1) Would be okay if getmail would just skip the mail, but it cancels. Not sure if there is any way around. [Dovecot] Connection queue full on my directors

I finally upgraded to v1.2.16 on my backend servers, with ldap instead of previously mysql, and put a couple of dovecot v2.0.8 directors in front of them (used haproxy previously). It seemed to work OK initially, but after a few hours we got bit by "Connection queue full" problems on the directors. So I now set default_process_limit=512 and also: service anvil { client_limit=1027 } since dovecot said that was now required. Things seems to be working, but I'm afraid default_process_limit=512 is too low: $ ps -ef|grep dovecot/pop3-login|wc -l 192 $ ps -ef|grep dovecot/imap-login|wc -l 472 so looks like I'm quite close to hitting this limit for my imap logins. We will eventually put up some webmail servers (using imapproxy to keep connections alive), that will be connecting over these directors. Then we will expect to have a lot more active imap sessions over these directors. Should we just keep increasing default_process_limit, or per service process_limit, and follow dovecots warnings about client_limits for auth/anvil.. or will we be getting into other problems like running out of file descriptors? Are there any max'es we should expect to run into ? Hi, I'm trying to control access to different services on an Debian server using /etc/group. So that a user I create for FTP usage doesn't fill up my server with IMAP folders or samba garbage. Services like proftpd have: "AllowGroup ftpgroup" sshd have "AllowGroups sshgroup" And samba have "valid users = @smbgroup" But I can't find the correct option in Dovecot (/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf) Do anyone have the magic option or a workaround thats doesn't envolve maintaining seperate user databases and password? (I know its needed for samba but besides that) /Neergaard

[Dovecot] utility to copy/sync IMAP mailboxes

Well, my Dovecot server (v2.0.8) is up and running, and now it's time to migrate mailboxes from the old mail server [Lotus Domino Release 5.0.8] running on Windows NT 4.0 [ancient -- been the mail server since Aug-2000]. I saw "dsync(1)" and thought my troubles were over. Only I can't figure out how to make it work with the NT/Domino server as a source for mailboxes. I guess dsync(1) works only in completely *nix environment. I've been trying the imapcopy.pl script from the IMAP Tools web page (http://www.athensfbc.com/imap_tools/) but it is having problems with Notes' choice of the backslash (\) character as a mailbox (namespace?) delimiter. Any suggestions for a stable, reliable (copy/duplicate/mirror/sync) tool that can do the job using only IMAP access? (No SSL support required.) Thanks in advance, - Don

[Dovecot] Max number of mail processes

Dovecot version 1.1.11. Error: Maximum number of mail processes exceeded (see max_mail_processes setting). I can't seem to get rid of these errors. I get batches of these errors about 4 or 5 times a day. I have a cron-job checking for the existence of this error and then I reboot dovecot when I see this error, but what is causing this error ? What I am reading on the Internet about this particular issue has not helped to resolve the issue. I would really like to know how many mail processes it thinks that it is using at any one instant in time. Is this possible ? Maybe then I can track the reason for the error.

[Dovecot] enforce STARTTLS on port 110 with POP3?

Hi there, We are using DoveCot 1.0.7. User will use POP3 or POP. We want to force user to securely send their credential and keep a secure connection between us and them. We can do TLS/SSL on port 995, or STARTTLS on port 110. The problem is that we have no way to enforce STARTTLS on 110, user can connect to DoveCot on port 110, sending user credential without STARTTLS (thus insecure). Reading DoveCot documentation does not sound it supports this. Here is what I got from documentation. Dovecot supports: * IMAP (including TLS/STARTTLS) * IMAP+SSL ("imaps") * POP3 (including TLS/STLS) * POP3+SSL ("pops") My only option to enforce securely sending user credential is to enable port 995 and disable port 110, sound right? Hi Everyone, I wish to run Dovecot on my "Front End" outbound mail relay, and use Dovecot purely for authentication purposes. However, each mysql database for each domain will be on a separate server. Is there a way for dovecot to authenticate against different databases depending on domain name? Thanks

[Dovecot] OS X Server Partition Problems

I'm a nube to Dovecot and this list. Please be kind. ;) I'm running Dovecot 1.1.20 and Postfix 2.5.5 on OS X Server 10.6.6. I've moved accounts from another, older cyrus-based server (thank god), and used fetchmail to imap the existing mail to the new server. At some point, I developed a problem with my partition map being semi-ignored. Mail is stored in multiple places, and I'm not sure why or entirely clear how it ended up there. My log is overflowing with entries such as… Jan 10 15:44:57 gilded-bat dovecot[65]: auth(default): od(john_doe_com): unable to find partition for tag=johndoe: using default mail location: /var/spool/imap/dovecot/mail …referring to each of my defined partitions. Here's what I semi-understand. /etc/dovecot/partition_map.conf.default contains: default:/var/spool/imap/dovecot/mail /etc/dovecot/partition_map.conf contains correct entries like default:/Mail JohnDoe:/Groups/JohnDoe/Mail [etc.] dovecotd -n is below. It's configuration with regard to mail store locations look ok to me, but then I'm a virgin. In practice, mail is being stored in three different locations. They're all full of mail directories and are busy. /var/spool/imap/dovecot/mail /Mail /Groups/JohnDoe/Mail …with of course the third entry being many entries for each client. The directories described definitely exist. Clients started out being able to see old mail that was transferred from the retired server, but no longer do. I'm not actually clear which of the three mail stores in use are being accessed by whom or for what. (And let's not even ask why none of this showed up in testing.) In short, I'm over my head and the villagers are outside with the usual pitchforks and torches. [Dovecot] dsync not copying all mail

Hi, I'm still trying to migrate from Dovecot 1.2.16 to 2.0.7 on FreeBSD. Previous attempts have failed with mails not being visible after the upgrade. Version 1.2.16 was migrated from maildir to dbox about a year ago via the convert-plugin. After previous attempts to "clean" the hybrid maildir-dbox situation I used imapsync to copy all mails from the old account to a new account. I would assume in this case I get a clean dbox-mailmap. I tried to run dsync on this new map but noticed a lot of mails are not syncing: [vmail@mail ~]$ find /vmail2/new/bunbun.be/nick | wc -l 5329 [vmail@mail ~]$ find /vmail2/old/bunbun.be/nick | wc -l 6134 Any ideas?
