[Dovecot] dsync not copying all mail

Hi, I'm still trying to migrate from Dovecot 1.2.16 to 2.0.7 on FreeBSD. Previous attempts have failed with mails not being visible after the upgrade. Version 1.2.16 was migrated from maildir to dbox about a year ago via the convert-plugin. After previous attempts to "clean" the hybrid maildir-dbox situation I used imapsync to copy all mails from the old account to a new account. I would assume in this case I get a clean dbox-mailmap. I tried to run dsync on this new map but noticed a lot of mails are not syncing: [vmail@mail ~]$ find /vmail2/new/bunbun.be/nick | wc -l 5329 [vmail@mail ~]$ find /vmail2/old/bunbun.be/nick | wc -l 6134 Any ideas? Hi, I'm trying to find a way to find inactive users. Is there a simple way to deduct the last login date of a user from that users Maildir files? Are the timestamps on the index files reliable? I ask because the system and dovecot logs are not available to me but I can search the whole .../vmail/domain/user/Maildir tree. I'n running 1.2.9 on ububtu 10.04 LTS with posttfix and postfixadmin. [Dovecot] Urgent problem: Dovecot fetches the same mails multiple times per POP

I have a problem since a couple of hours: I manage several mboxes on a virtual server using Dovecot (over POP3). Until a few hours ago, it worked well, but since 11:50, the e-mail clients which access Dovecot's mailboxes, receive all e-mails new each time the mailbox is queried. For example: 15:40 fetches 22 new mails 15:41 fetches the same 22 mails again as new 15:42 fetches the same 22 mails again as new etc. Dovecot version is 1.0.15 on Debian Lenny. How can I fix this? How can I diagnose what's wrong? The mailbox files themselves seem ok, no dupe messages. Hi, How to tune the size of each "m.xxx" file in mdbox format , in order to optimize the ratio size/number of files ? (I can see for instance more than 100 000 files in one directory due to very large mailbox size) If such parameter exists, what is the typical value ? Thanks Joan

When i changed sendmail_path to original sednmail binary it's working and vacation is sent, but i can see some errors from sendmail. Hi all, I am having a small problem with a catch-all user I have setup in my Postfix/Dovecot setup. I am not 100% sure this is Dovecot related, but, logic tells me it is. I have a virtual user called @reinhold.dk setup to redirect to my main account, peter(a)reinhold.dk. If I send a spam mail (GTUBE) to peter(a)reinhold.dk, the mail is marked with Amavis x-headers as it should be. If I send the same mail to peterpeter(a)reinhold.dk, I can see in my maillog that the mail is PASSED SPAMMY, just as the first one, but when I check the mail, all amavis x-headers are missing. (Except one, X-Spam-Virus-Scanned:, which just informs me that the mail has passed through the scanner) Does anyone know if this is a Dovecot issue? (It seems so to me), and if so, any hints on how I can change this behaviour? [Dovecot] can not receive external emails

Hi, I am new to Dovecot. Recently I have got a new server running on Ubuntu Server 10.04 with Postfix, Dovecot (for IMAP) and Squirrelmail. During the test, I was able to send & receive emails internally, and can send emails externally. However, I got a problem when it comes to receiving emails externally. The emails I sent from yahoo never arrived to my local inbox. Anyway, I checked the mail.log and found the following dovecot: auth-worker(default): dovecot-auth: /usr/locallib/liblber-2.4.so.2" no version information available (required by dovecot-auth) dovecot: auth-worker(default): dovecot-auth: /usr/locallib/libldap_r-2.4.so.2" no version information available (required by dovecot-auth) dovecot: auth-worker(default): dovecot-auth: /usr/locallib/libldap-r-2.4.so.2" no version information available (required by /usr/lib/libpq.so.5) I was wondering if anyone might be kind to explain the above error messages and how to work around this so that it could send/receive emails coming from external mail server. [Dovecot] IMAP Clients can not see 3rd tier nested IMAP directories

I have a very bizarre problem that I hope someone can help me with. I am not sure if this is a Dovecot problem, or IMAP client problem. I recently used Transend's Migrator to move mail from Exchange 2007 to my Dovecot 1.0.7 server. The program seems to have moved the nested IMAP dirs properly as seen below in a directory listing of the maildir dir. The nested dirs have indexes, cur, new dirs as expected. However, when the account is viewed in Windows Thunderbird 3.1.6 or Outlook 2010 the 3rd tier dirs are not seen, nor can they be subscribed to. On a whim, I decided to try Apple Mail 4.3 to view the account and all the IMAP dirs can be seen and accessed as expected. Any idea what is going on? Is this somehow an IMAP client problem (bug) or an issue with Dovecot and these clients? Hi, I'm trying to migrate from Dovecot 1.2.16 to 2.0.7. Initially the mails were stored in Maildir format but I changed them to dbox using "fast Maildir migration" and some mails are still in the old maildir format. [Dovecot] Pointers for developing a proper encryption plugin?

Hi all, One thing that's always itching when I think about mail-servers, is the storage of e-mail messages in (rather) plain-text. Meaning, any administrator with sufficient privileges would be able to read messages not meant for them. Of course, PGP alike solutions exist, but that's not for the masses. In my opinion I would like to have e-mail messages stored encrypted using a (strong) user-supplied password. That password would ideally be the same as the one the user logs in with. So for me it's okay to place and enforce that requirement on any of the users. Having this in place would for sure reassure external auditors/accountants of any kind. Having Google'd from here to 'yonder and consulting experts on Experts Exhange, I have come up with only this pointer: http://dovecot.markmail.org/search/?q=dovecot+encrypt#query:dovecot%20encry… It mention the same issue, and also mentions the non-existence of a solution (back in May 2010). But, beforing diving into developing solutions myself, I have to be absolutely sure that there isn't any solution yet. And, in consequence of non-existence: what would allow me to fasttrack any development efforts on this? Is there an overview available where I could learn the best approach for plugin development? [Dovecot] dovecot can't see mail that is there

I used to install dovecot on any Fedora fresh installation and I could fetch my internal mail few minutes later. Now I've been struggling for two days and I haven't got my mail working yet. I have Fedora 14 with sendmail. Some application on the same machine send mail to an account on the same machine (hence all is confined to one machine) and I want to retrieve it from a laptop on the same LAN via Outlook. If I login into the account and check the mail with the alpine (ex pine) client, I see that there are 10 mails. When I "telnet localhost pop3" and login into the account, the "list" command says there are 0 mails. Various suggestions found on the internet for slightly different configuration did not help. All the help will be very much appreciated. [Dovecot] Mail delivered, but lost?

Running dovecot 1.2.9 on a Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS virtual machine. Postfix receives messages and hands them over to deliver for local storage. Today two mails came in that could not be found allthough they got delivered. [Dovecot] dsync backup errors with maildir -> mdbox

Hi, In preparation for a migration from maildir to mdbox, I am using dsync backup to do initial mailbox copies (at this point I do not want to risk any changes to the maildir). The initial run of dsync runs fine, but a second run to migrate any changes since the first run produces errors for many users. [Dovecot] Alternative storage vs. Self healing (losing flags?)

Hi, We are going to set up an environment for our customers where the storage is provided by two servers. First one stores the new emails, second one stores all the others using Dovecot's alternative storage feature (mailbox format is mdbox). The servers are connected via NFS. If, for any reason, the alternative storage is not mounted, Dovecot will see only an empty folder and due to its self-healing functionality flags for messages stored on alternative storage will be lost. Is there any way to prevent regenerating indexes (and especially flags as a side-effect) if the alternative storage seems to be completely empty? (like a dummy file in the root of the alternative storage and an option to enable/disable this check) Thanks in advance, Daniel Marczisovszky

[Dovecot] Upgrade from 1.2.16 with sieve/managesieve to 2.0.8 with pigeonhole

Hi, I would like to upgrade my server from 1.2.16 with sieve and managesieve to 2.0.8 with pigeonhole. Will I get all functionality I was having before? Should this migration be painless or will it require some additional work? I've read the Upgrading guide so I know I need to create an additional user. I've migrated the mails from Maildir to dbox in the past (using the convert plugin); does that mean I'm fully dbox or am I in a maildir-dbox hybrid situation? Hello, Currently Dovecot (and any other application, which cares about e-mail delivery) does at least one fsync per mail delivery. Given that hard disk drives have a very limited IOPS, this effectively limits the maximum mail delivery performance to a very low value, under utilizing the available storage IO capacity. Calculating with an average mail size of 50 kB and an average consumer HDD with 120 IOPS, the theoretical mail delivery performance will be 50 kB*120 IOPS=5.85 MBps. But if we could write 500 kB with every transaction, the delivery speed would be nearly 10 times as well. Dovecot have two process models: separate processes for each client connection and an async in-process multiplexing method. This works for each one, albeit the timing is somewhat different. So here's the idea: instead of fsyncing immediately in the LDA (lmtpd) every time when the client says "\r\n.\r\n" after the DATA phase, let's introduce a user settable timer (let's call that sync_delay from now on) and only sync in every sync_delay seconds. This would introduce an up to sync_delay seconds delay in lmtpd returning "250 Ok" to the client, but that's generally not a problem, because in high traffic setups there is a great amount of concurrency, so you could use a lot of client connections easily. Take an example setting of sync_delay = 100 ms. With this, 10 syncs would happen in every second from Dovecot LDA processes, meaning if a client connects in t=0 it will immediately got the response 250, if a client connects in t=0.05, it will get the response in 50 ms (in an ideal world, where syncing does not take time), and the committed blocks could accumulate for a maximum of 100 ms. In a busy system (where this setting would make sense), it means it would be possible to write more data with less IOPS needed. I can see two problems: 1. there is no call for committing a lot of file descriptors in one transaction, so instead of fsync() for each of the modified FDs, a sync() would be needed. sync() writes all buffers to stable storage, which is bad if you have a mixed workload, where there are a lot of non-fsynced data, or other heavy fsync users. But modern file systems, like ZFS will write those back too, so there an fsync(fd) is -AFAIK- mostly equivalent with a sync(pool on which fd is). sync() of course is system wide, so if you have other file systems, those will be synced as well. (this setting isn't for everybody) 2. in a multiprocess environment this would need coordination, so instead of doing fsyncs in distinct processes, there would be one process needed, which does the sync and returns OK for the others, so they can notify the client about the commit to the stable storage. Any opinions on this?

[Dovecot] virtual user problems

dovecot 2.0.8 with postfix; transfer postfix -> dovecot by lmtp is fine Now i have to redirect a couple of virtual email names (like admin(a)mydomain.com, postmaster@, webmaster@, info@, sales@ ...) to a single user postbox named xxx@mydomain. As I use mysql for the auth-sql, it's returning userhome /home/<name>/maildir for all sql requests to <name>=admin, postmaster etc. I also verified that "doveadm user info" is returning the maildir/home: /home/xxx/maildir So I assumed, that all mails to admin, postmaster etc. are transfered to user xxx mailbox. But it isn't. Dovecot is creating the maildirs /home/admin/maildir, /home/info/maildir and so on. What do I miss here to get that virtual users mapped to the correct user xxx? Regards Birte
