[Dovecot] mbox vs maildir

Ignoring my previous message just for a second, I realized that my config wasn't correct. So I have this for namespaces: namespace private { separator = / prefix = "mail/" location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u inbox = yes hidden = no list = yes # for v1.1+ } namespace private { separator = / prefix = "mail-Archives/" location = maildir:~/mail-Archives:LAYOUT=fs inbox = no hidden = no list = yes subscriptions = yes } But when I'm in Thunderbird and I try to subscribe to anything that falls inside of ~/mail-Archives/ it won't work. I can browser all the way down to the folder, but I can't see anything within that folder. For example, consider the full path to the following 'Ashley-09' mailbox: ~/mail-Archives/2009/Ashley/Ashley-Jan09 In Thunderbird, when I hit 'Subscribe' I can browse down to '2009' and I can see 'Ashley', but I can't drill down into it and subscribe to 'Ashley-Jan09'. What am I missing here?

Our mail setup is as follows: ~/mail/ - This contains single mailboxes (Drafts, Trash, and others) ~/mail-Archives/ - This contains a hierarchy of folders containing mailboxes For example, a tree of ~/mail/ would look like this: ~/mail/ ~/mail/Trash ~/mail/Drafts ~/mail/sent-mail ~/mail/My Stuff ~/mail/Important ~/mail/test/SomeFolder <-- this would never happen, but I have to account for it during our transition A tree of ~/mail-Archives/ would look like this: ~mail-Archives/2009/MyStuff/MyStuff-Dec09 ~mail-Archives/2009/MyStuff/MyStuff-Nov09 ~mail-Archives/2009/MyStuff/MyStuff-Oct09 ~mail-Archives/2010/MyStuff/MyStuff-Jan10 ~mail-Archives/2010/Important/Important-Jan10 All of that works, I can open up Thunderbird and browser/read/delete messages no problem. However, when I try to move that 'test' folder from ~/mail/ into ~/mail-Archives I get an error message: 'Can't rename mailbox to another storage type.' The same thing happens if I try to move any of the mailboxes in ~/mail/ to ~/mail-Archives/ . Is there a way to fix that? Our namespaces look like this: namespace private { separator = / prefix = "mail/" location = mbox:~/mail:INBOX=/var/mail/%u inbox = yes hidden = no list = yes # for v1.1+ } namespace private { separator = / prefix = "mail-Archives/" location = mbox:~/mail-Archives inbox = no hidden = no list = yes subscriptions = yes }

Sorry for the fuzz on the thread earlier. I now have dovecots deliver (1.1.?)up and running and delivering mails to maildirs located on the AFS So if anyone is wondering, I would say that AFS works as a backend for storing emails without any ugly patches.

[Dovecot] Dovecot and duplicates

Hi I'm having a problem setting up duplicate filtering on my mail server. I've set up the mail server with Postfix and Dovecot with virtual LDAP users, ClamAV virus scanning. The problem is that some of the virtual users use multiple e-mail addresses and postfix delivers emails sent to a user as many times as the user has email address entries in LDAP. I was wondering what would be the smartest way to get rid of these duplicates, they have identical message ID:s and a simple procmail recipe does the trick, however as I'm using dovecots deliver, procmail isn't the answer. Is it possible to use Sieve to do this, I've been googling around *a lot* and haven't found anything that would solve the problem... This is the procmail recipe that succesfully eliminates the duplicates: MAILDIR=/var/vmail :0 Wh: msgid.lock | formail -D 8192 .msgid.cache Or could another solution be to configure postfix to first receive the email, then let procmail do the duplicate filtering, then ClamAV does the virus scan and finally dovecots deliver delivers the message to the virtual user's mailbox? I'm running KDC with all users and passwords, but have to manage clients who doesn't support GSSAPI like mobile phones. Is it possible to dovecot SASL check password in KDC when user sends plain text login? I know this is possible to do with saslauthd from Cyrus but prefer to stick with dovecot SASL.

Hello, I'm using dovecot 1.2.10 with mbox format (which implies layout=fs) and I would like to switch to maildir++ layout without changing format in order to implement subfolders for IMAP users. I understand that I should move the INDEX location to avoid some namespace conflict (it would be a good idea anyway: I'll move them on another disc :). Now I have mail_location = mbox:/var/spool/mailboxes/%u:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u in my /etc/dovecot.conf. I think it should become somethink like mail_location=mbox:/var/spool/mailboxes/%u:LAYOUT=Maildir++:INBOX=/var/spool/mail/%u:INDEX=/var/dovecot_indexes I'll have to rename folders for IMAP users, right? [Dovecot] Problem with created ~/mail directory

If a user doesn't have a ~/mail directory and logs in, the directory is created for them. However, it is created with insecure permissions, 0770 (full group access). The problem is this bit in src/lib-storage/index/mbox/mbox-storage.c: #define CREATE_MODE 0770 /* umask() should limit it more */ The code then uses CREATE_MODE as an argument to mkdir_parents(), but mkdir_parents() overrides the umask setting and forces the requested permissions. There's no way to override this except to change the source code. It looks like the same thing is in dbox-storage.c and cydir-storage.c. Hello Since we upgrade all our users's PC with Thunderbird 3(.0.1) many of them have a problem with email that move back to unread status even after they have read them. The problem does not occured with Thunderbird 2 Is this problem Dovecot related ? Do you have the same trouble ? Thank you

Hi, I am seeing this on one of my servers: Jan 8 10:08:58 l1 dovecot: IMuser(user): Next message unexpectedly corrupted in mbox file /home/user/Mailbox at 10558 I have never seen this before, and google yields no results except when this warning was added to the source code here: http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot-cvs/2009-December/015177.html The user has deleted all of the mail in the Mailbox but the problem persists. Any ideas? Justin.

After upgrading from dovecot 1.2.3, managesieve 0.11.8, sieve 0.1.11 to dovecot 1.2.9, managesieve 0.11.10 and sieve 0.1.14 users who do not have sieve rules yet and use managesieve for the first time do trigger error messages in the log file (for the authenticated user ggg in group syspr): Jan 4 17:35:26 apollo dovecot: MANAGESIEVE(ggg): chown(/var/spool/sieve/ggg, -1, 0(root)) failed: Operation not permitted (egid=203(syspr)) Jan 4 17:35:26 apollo dovecot: MANAGESIEVE(ggg): sieve-storage: sieve_storage_verify_dir(/var/spool/sieve/ggg/tmp) failed: Operation not permitted Jan 4 17:35:26 apollo dovecot: MANAGESIEVE(ggg): Fatal: Failed to create sieve storage with data: /var/spool/sieve/ggg Anyway the filter rules get created (used avelsieve) and the filter does get compiled when the first mail hits the rule. [Dovecot] LMTP in 2.0: concurrency, inet sockets

I didn't really have much time to look at the beta versions of dovecot 2.0 (apart from installing it once and migrating most of my current configuration, purely for testing purposes). An exciting new feature is the LMTP support. In the default configuration I have seen, that one only listened on a Unix socket - will it support network (inet) sockets, too? What about concurrent deliviers? As of now, when using the deliver LDA together with Postfix, you have to make sure that only one recipient is passed to deliver at a time, so for multi-recipient mail, the system might spawn a large number of processes (two per recipient, therefore two forks/execve calls). Is that limit still imposed with the new LMTP server? Stefan

[Dovecot] blocked for xx secs

Hello, Occasionally (a few times a day) we get batches of Warnings in the log such as: dovecot: Warning: chdir(/maildir/x.co.uk/users/y) blocked for 18 secs This tends to last a minute or so for different users. /maildir is a NFS mount, and I'm suspecting it's the NFS server being busy and dovecot having to wait. Other than replacing the NFS server with faster hardware is there anything else we can do? Indexes are local, and Maildir is on the NFS. Dovecot 1.2.5 using: mail_nfs_storage = yes mmap_disable = no NFS mounted as; /maildir on /.automount/a.diskless/root/mail type nfs (nosuid,nodev,noatime,vers=3,proto=tcp) TIA -- Andrew

Now supported by v2.0. Also as a patch to v1.2: http://dovecot.org/patches/1.2/zlib-compress.diff I'm not really sure if I should commit it to v1.2 code tree. The code contains ugly copy&pasted io_stream_copy() and v1.2 is supposed to be feature complete..

Some people have been requesting this forever. So finally this works: service tcpwrap { unix_listener login/tcpwrap { mode = 0666 } } login_access_sockets = tcpwrap There can also be more sockets listed, in case someone wants to build their own access checking service.

[Dovecot] pop3 quick question

Hello list, I have found imap_allowed option in dovecot which do exactly what I need, for imap. Is there something similar for pop3 protocol? The main goal for it - is to enable pop3 access to specific users. Or maybe dovecot have some 'pop3=yes' or 'imap=no' args to userdb/passdb sections ? I know future dovecot 2.* versions will support rewriting for protocols, but this is required for 1.2 branch.

ZFS has support for compression on the file system ( lzjb | gzip | gzip-N | zle ). gzip eats CPU even at levels as low as 3. From the zfs man page The lzjb compression algorithm is optimized for performance while providing decent data compression. You can specify the gzip level by using the value gzip-N where N is an integer from 1 (fastest) to 9 (best compression ratio). The cost of CPU to support compression (gzip) vs the Cost of Disk if mboxes are not compressed? The other interesting feature ZFS (OpenSolaris) has is de-duplication, it detects if the block which is about to be written, is the same as another block and instead of writing the block it puts a pointer to the already existing block, saving disk space. Only problem with this is you would need to filter out headers which are different even when the to/body is the same. Cheers

[Dovecot] mdbox compression

I was wondering if I should add compression support to mdbox one mail at a time or one file (~2MB) at a time. The tradeoffs are: * one mail at a time allows quickly seeking to wanted mail inside the file, but it can't compress mails as well * one file at a time compresses better, but seeking is slow because it can only be done by uncompressing all the data until the wanted offset is reached I did a quick test for this with 27 MB of my old INBOX mails: (note the -b option, so it doesn't count wasted fs space) mdbox/storage% du -sb . 15120350 . Maildir/cur% du -sb . 16517320 . % echo 1-15120350/16517320|bc -l .08457606924125705623 So, compressed mdboxes take 8.5% less space. This was with regular gzip compression with default level. With bzip2 -9 compression the difference was 10%. Any thoughts on if 8-10% is significant enough improvement to make seeking performance worse? Or perhaps I should just implement both ways.. :)

Hi All, Actually, I installed Dovecot on an OpenBSD server, however, after properly setting (assumed) the confs, Dovecot does'nt start. I don't know the reason but don't know how to debug. Where is the log about reason for not starting ? Thank you for helping. Regards
