[Dovecot] Shared mailboxes do not support subfolders

Hi, I'm currently running Dovecot 1.2.8 with dbox mailboxes. I've configured the use of shared mailboxes. I'm able to only see the top-level mailboxes: e.g. Inbox LogWatch Trash Sent but not LogWatch/Server1 LogWatch/Server2 Is this a know limitation of a bug? Rgds, N.

I'm invoking deliver through postfix with a dovecot transport in master.cf, using the -m ${extension} argument. If I have no sieve script, or a sieve script with an implicit keep, the mail gets correctly filed into the -m mailbox. However if the sieve script has an explicit discard, this gets honored if it doesn't match another sieve action. Shouldn't -m take precedence? I would say that if an extension is present any other sieve action should be ignored, perhaps just sieve_before should be run then the message filed per the extension. -frank

[Dovecot] basic understanding of imap in dovecot

I have always used a pop3 daemon, and switching to dovecot has been my introduction to imap. Imap is foreign to me. I am wondering if I am a little off-track here, and would like some clarification. My MTA (exim) delivers email to: /mail/user dovecot, sucks that mail from /mail/user TO /home/user/mail/<filenamesoffolders> dovecot IMAP further uses /home/user/mail/.imap/folders/{.index / .index.cache / .index.log} the mail folder which exim uses doesn't seem to get emptied by dovecot when it sucks the email into /home/user/mail/<filenamesoffolders> when using IMAP. If POP3 is used via dovecot, then it appears that the interaction is directly to the original exim folder and that it does indeed empty (or at least it has the "FOLDER INTERNAL DATA" entry). I suppose my question is, is there a way to have dovecot empty/parse the original exim mailbox so that the customer email isn't sitting in two spots, taking up double the space. This would be in the IMAP environment only, as POP3 seems to be fine. Any online references available to help a newbee understand IMAP? Thanks!

[Dovecot] Permissions errors while reading messages via IMAP

Greetings all, I have been trying to setup a new system using Postfix and Dovecot to manage email for a bunch of virtual domains. So far everything is great, and I am now at the point where I am trying to build a webmail interface for the system. I'm using RoundCube for now. The tutorial I have been working from is here: http://workaround.org/articles/ispmail-etch/ Which seems to be a decent enough read. At this point I can login without issue but I can't see any mail messages. [Dovecot] imap-login crashes after upgrade to Dovecot 1.2.8 Linux 64-bit

Hi all, We moved our Dovecot installation first of all to have all folders and inboxes on NetApps via NFS (with indexes local) then from a physical Solaris 8 4-way UltraSparc server running Dovecot 1.2.5 (32-bit) to a virtualised Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit server with a single virtual processor (in VMWare ESX 3.5) running Dovecot 1.2.8 (64-bit). This evening I tried with "login_process_per_connection = no" with no problems, except more CPU load and needing to increase login_max_processes_count (and strictly speaking the max fds set with ulimit -n would need to be increased, though I didn't do that as it would have involved killing and restarting the master process - come back Solaris plimit!) Just after midnight, I switched back to "login_process_per_connection = no" and set "login_max_connections = 32" and managed to get core dumps enabled, hence the above! Apart from this problem, the virtual machine has been doing extremely well, so it's not CPU or I/O load related. I'm not sure whether the problem is caused by the switch from Dovecot 1.2.5 to 1.2.8, Solaris to Linux, physical to virtual, or 32-bit to 64-bit! Perhaps we changed too much at once, but it did mean we kept the service going while power was turned off in our main machine room last weekend ... Or will that confuse the actual dovecot --exec-mail ext /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/expire-tool.sh cronjob since some of the entries mailboxes won't exist locally? Ben

Heya, We are in the process of migrating from qpopper to dovecot as POP3 server (and IMAP as well) and we hit the UIDL issue with dovecot. Qpopper uses its own algorithm to create UIDL values and if you set it up to write them down in the mbox file as X-UIDL, then dovecot can use them (pop_uidl_reuse = yes). But if you don't use that feature from qpopper, than X-UIDLs are missing and there is no way to create the same UIDL values. So, I was wondering if anyone else hit that issue and maybe knows how to address it (writing an extension or something)? Thanks in advance, regards, Jernej

[Dovecot] Dovecot Deliver CPU usage

Hi All, We have upgraded the dovecot from 1.0 to 1.2.8. After upgradation we have noticed that dovecot deliver process is utilizing a lot of CPU. As a result the mailsystem will stop working. When we limit the no of procs in postfix for dovecot deliver the CPU usage will come down. But we are not facing this problem with the previous version. Below is the log files for dovecot when the error occurs write_full(/home/vmail/dhanbank.co.in/vinukumarvm/temp.server.be3e5a849a909847) failed: No space left on device dovecot: deliver(user(a)example.com): stat(/tmp/Dovecot Delivery Mail) failed: No space left on device But my system has 54gb of free space for root filesystem where tmp residing. Greetings all, I have a OpenBSD /Dovecot server at home running and sending / receiving email "internally" without issue.. Recently, I set up the same at our Parish, but one of our users wants to get their email externally. The user can read their email but has to "send" via the local ISP server.. The problem After much searching I have not found an answer to my question. I would like the user to authenticate to be able to "send" email "through" the server.. OpenBSD uses bsdauth by default in Dovecot. In Windows Live Mail I have this setting enabled: "Remove From Server When Deleted From Deleted Items". It does not seem to remove them even when the trash is emptied though. Am using POP3 access. Anyone else see this? Matt

I forked the wiki to http://wiki1.dovecot.org/ is the old docs for v1.x http://wiki2.dovecot.org/ is the new docs for v2.0 For now wiki.dovecot.org points to wiki1, but once v2.0 is released I'll change it to point to wiki2. I symlinked the user directory, so users should stay synced between the wikis. The main reason for wiki2 is to be able to describe Dovecot v2.0's actual behavior everywhere and get rid of all the old v1.x specific settings. The wiki1 is already annoyingly bloated and confusing with information about v1.0 and then v1.1 and maybe even how it's still different in v1.2.. Now would be a good time to do any other larger changes, if anyone has suggestions. :) (Oh, and I haven't yet done any actual changes to wiki2..)

Hello Dovecot users, Due to personal matters I haven't had time to do anything in the last few weeks. Before that I provided some pre-releases and since nobody indicated problems with those, I release them definitively now. I hope the shit storm has blown over, so that I can dedicate more of my time towards Pigeonhole development. The Sieve release involves a large architectural change, but also fixes quite a few small problems. The ManageSieve release is necessary to match Sieve API changes. Changelog Sieve v0.1.14: * Made the imposed limits on the number of redirects and the number of actions configurable. The settings are called sieve_max_actions and sieve_max_redirects. * Did a major rework of extension handling, making sure that no global state is maintained. This change was triggered by problems that global state info would cause for Dovecot v2.0, but it is also important for v1.2 as it significantly cleans up the library implementation. + Made LDA Sieve plugin recognize the deliver_log_format setting. + Message headers produced from user-supplied data are now RFC2047-encoded if necessary for outgoing messages. This is for example important for the :subject argument of the vacation action. + Added support for the $text$ substitution in the deprecated notify extension. + The subaddress extension now also accepts recipient_delimiter setting as an alias for sieve_subaddress_sep setting. This anticipates the recipient_delimiter setting in v2.0. - Fixed logging of mailbox names. It logged the converted mUTF7 version in stead of the original UTF8 version supplied by the user. - Fixed a minor memory leak in the multiscript support. - Fixed a bug in the recompilation of Sieve scripts. Hi all: We're planning to deploy a large e-mail system storing maildirs in a NAS system through NFS. One of the options we're thinking on is using Dovecot+EXIM. As far as I've read in both project's documentation, both services implement locking allowing multiple servers to access the same maildirs in order to distribute the service load. However, I can't find any information explaining whether both locking mechanisms are compatible, whether any additional configuration is needed both in Dovecot and/or EXIM, or even whether any locking synchronization between both services is needed/recommendable at all. The only remote clue I've found is that, according to Dovecot docs: "Because Dovecot uses its own non-standard locking (dovecot-uidlist.lock dotlock file), other MUAs accessing the maildir don't support it." (but EXIM is not a MUA, anyway) Anyhow theoretically MailDir could even be considered free of locking problems, but I'm not sure of the real implications of putting together several Exim and Dovecot installations pointing to the same NFS filesystem. Any knowledge/experience/link/clue on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Daniel Campos

Hi, i've just upgraded to dovecot-1.2.8 (from 1.2.4) and do now get the following errors when deliver gets hands on mails with some attachments. # tail -n 1 /var/log/messages Dec 14 19:00:36 mail3 dovecot: deliver(user): Panic: file istream.c: line 96 (i_stream_read): assertion failed: (stream->eof) The MTA is postfix running inside a FreeBSD 7.2-STABLE jail. The homes where deliver should put mails are mounted via NFS. As it works with small attachments perhaps this is related to the message size. However i don't get the "stale NFS file handle" error any more which i did under 1.2.4 (See thread that begins with: Message-ID: <20091016122519.GC6309(a)emmi.physik-pool.tu-berlin.de> ) Greetings, Leon

[Dovecot] dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files

In the past few months we've been having increasing problems with dovecot timing out pop3 logins. As best I can tell it gets to the point where it won't accept any new pop3 logins. The error in the mail log is: dovecot: pipe() failed: Too many open files I've researched this problem a number of times, usually I see suggestions to increase ulimit. I've done this a number of times, all the way up to: ulimit -n 8192 I've put that in the init script right above the daemon start line. So far it hasn't helped. In addition, when looking at lsof, it doesn't seem like we're anywhere near the actual limit. for example, last time dovecot only had 1032 files open. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing the error? Or what else I can try to figure this out? Hi Timo, We've been running Dovecot with Maildir on NFS for quite a while - since back in the 1.0 days I believe. I'm somewhat new here. Anyway... The Wiki article on NFS states that 1.1 and newer will flush attribute caches if necessary with mail_nfs_storage=yes. We're running 1.2.8 with that set, as well as mail_nfs_index=yes, mmap_disable=yes and fsync_disable=no. We have a pool of POP/IMAP and SMTP machines that are accessing the maildirs, and can't guarantee any sort of user session affinity to a particular host. We also mount our NFS shares with 'noac', which is what I'm writing to ask about. I'd like to stop doing that for performance reasons. Do you see any issues with taking that out of the mount options, given our environment? Thanks, -Brad

[Dovecot] lot's of timeouts

Hi, since some time ago we do have a lot of "timeouts" connecting to our imap/po3 server. This week I switched the whole system to a new dual quadcore xeon, 24GB RAM, SAS2 RAID-10. (SUN Fire 4170) But the mailclients (mostly thunderbird and apple mail) still reporte the timeouts by accessing the mailboxes. The server is doing smtp, imap/pop3, webmailsystem and spam/antivirus-checking all together. (RH EL 5, sendmail, horde, mysql, mailscanner, spamassassin) We use the original RH dovecot-1.0.7, mbox-format and mailboxes up to 4 GB ... (historicaly grown ...) So where to start debugging the imap/pop3 timeouts? What information may I provide, which doc may I read? Thanks for helping me to find and fix the problem.
