I've just enabled IMAP quota support on a LDAP userbase in about an hour. In this hour I read the Dovecot documentation on quota support, extended the customers LDAP schema, added a "mailQuota"-attribute and a value to all users, enabled the plugin in dovecot.conf, added the attribute query in dovecot-ldap.conf, reloaded the system and tested the functionality and ... everything worked out of the box. [Dovecot] Need help to install dovecot on solaris 10 with openldap libs

Hi, I install dovecot with ldap support at Solaris 10 (x86). I know that solaris LDAP is broken and so I install openldap. OpenLDAP shared libraries are at /usr/local/lib and /usr/local/include. While installing dovecot, I did the followings: I execute this before run "./configure --with-ldap" LDFLAGS="-L/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.2/lib -R/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.2/lib -L/usr/local/lib -R/usr/local/lib" but dovecot is using the Solaris default LDAP lib files. [Dovecot] convert plugin fails - drops root privileges then tries to create file in /

Hi I just tried to run the convert plugin as described at http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Convert (except with mail_location = maildir:~/Mail) It fails with an error message: Eopen(/.temp.falcon.endbracket.net.18618.8d5e0a038da6cf06) failed: Permission denied Error: imap dump-capability process returned 89 It looks like Dovecot execs /usr/libexec/dovecot/imap, which drops root privileges (probably via get_imap_capability), then loads /usr/lib/dovecot/imap/lib01_convert_plugin.so, which tries to create a file in the root directory, which it obviously won't have write privileges on. I'm running dovecot-1.0-1.2.rc15.el5 on CentOS 5. If I change the paths from ~ to /home/%u, I get this error message: Emkdir_parents(/home/dump-capability/mail) failed: Permission denied

Hi, I was using Dovecot (POP3,IMAP+quotas) with postfix quota "addon". But the postfix's quotas were reported differently and the quota file gets messed up all the time. So now I have also Dovecot's LDA, and everything works like charm... but... Now postfix can pass only one mail at a time to LDA. And that slows down delivery. Postfix master file: dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=vmail:vmail argv=/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/deliver -f ${sender} -d ${recipient} Is there a way to pass more than one mail at a time?

I have spent a long time looking into this and can't find the answer I'm looking for, so I'm asking here. I'm cutting the example down to just the bare minimums. This is NOT my actual configuration, but is sufficient for asking this question: How can I use dovecot's deliver LDA to deliver to virtual users, but then have unknown virtual users fall back to catch-all addresses defined by sendmail? Background: * sendmail is the MTA. I do not wish to change this. * procmail is the default MDA. * deliver is set up per the dovecot documentation as another MDA. * mailertable is configured to send mydomain.com to dovecot:dovecot * SQL backend for user/passwords I have it working the way I want with the exception of catch-alls. I thought that it might work by adding @mydomain.com to virtusertable, but sendmail sees the "user not found" return from deliver as the MDA and bounces the mail to postmaster. So what I'm trying to accomplish is this: Mail from user(a)external.com to me(a)mydomain.com Deliver to me Mail from user(a)external.com to sales(a)mydomain.com (virtual) Deliver via deliver to sales(a)mydomain.com Mail from user(a)external.com to foobar(a)mydomain.com (invalid) Deliver to catchall - spam(a)otherdomain.com Can someone point me in the right direction. My openldap-2.3.35 shared lib files are at /usr/local/lib/ and /usr/local/include/. Barkley DB version is 4.2. [Dovecot] Regarding the UIDLIST

Hi, I wonder if the UID's in the UIDLIST will ever change for a given email? Eg with courier it is recreated sometimes, but can i 100% rely on that the UIDs will never change? Or is there anything else i can rely on that will never change? The reason I'm asking is that i want to link certain tasks etc etc to an email, and the only way to get a unique link is that if the uidlist or something else unique never changes. [Dovecot] old master.pid prevents dovecot startup

Summary ======= After an unclean shutdown the file /var/run/dovecot/master.pid remained behind. This prevented dovecot from starting, and gave a misleading error message. To be more resilient and fault-tolerant, I recommend that dovecot also check the validity of the PID in /var/run/dovecot/master.pid in order to determine whether or not another dovecot process is running. Detail ====== In testing out my automatic UPS shutdown I inadvertently shut down my system uncleanly ... oops! As the system rebooted, I saw that dovecot did not start properly, with an error message: Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot.conf After the system came up, I tried to start dovecot manually. Turns out that there was an invalid PID in /var/run/dovecot/master.pid ----- [root@mykiss5 mth]# service dovecot start Starting Dovecot Imap: Error: Dovecot is already running with PID 1965 (read from /var/run/dovecot/master.pid) Fatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot.conf [FAILED] [root@mykiss5 mth]# ps 1965 PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND [root@mykiss5 mth]# rm /var/run/dovecot/master.pid rm: remove regular file `/var/run/dovecot/master.pid'? y [root@mykiss5 mth]# service dovecot start Starting Dovecot Imap: [ OK ] [root@mykiss5 mth]# service dovecot stop Stopping Dovecot Imap: [ OK ] [root@mykiss5 mth]# service dovecot start Starting Dovecot Imap: [ OK ] [root@mykiss5 mth]# dovecot --version 1.0.7 [root@mykiss5 mth]# ----- This leads me to believe that dovecot is only checking for the existance of /var/run/dovecot/master.pid. It seems to me that it would be more fault-tolerant if it also checked the validity of the PID that is in /var/run/dovecot/master.pid. Michael

[Dovecot] Keep pop messages, is it possible?

Hi! I would like to find a way to not delete messages when they are downloaded via pop3, is that possible with dovecot? Gmail do this, I dont know how they mark messages that have been downloaded to avoid clients to download it again, but it looks like a good resource! Thanks for the help!

Your Getmail app may not be truly running as root and thus does not really have permission to do what you want. you may need to do the same for the group as well Unix permissions are weird sometimes, like a $100 television tube that protects a 50 cent fuse by blowing first. It does look like (from your use of /usr/local/*****) you built dovecot to run out of /usr/local. One last thing, as a security idea, try something like master { path = /usr/local/var/run/dovecot/auth-master mode = 0600 user = dovecot_user group = dovecot_group } and set your postfix line that calls deliver to match: dovecot unix - n n - - pipe flags=DRhu user=dovecot_user:dovecot_group argv=/usr/local/libexec/dovecot/ deliver -f ${sender} -d ${recipient} (try to have dovecot run as an unprivileged user as much as you can)

Hi, we just setup a new mailserver for our company with some sieve filtering in place. Everything works as expected but there is one flaw. We setup the per user sieve filters in files within the users mailbox maildir as follows: lrwxrwxrwx 1 mail mail 21 Jan 13 17:20 .dovecot.sieve -> sieve/phpscript.sieve This link is actually picked up by dovecot and being announced as an IMAP folder which gives an error in certain MUAs as they try to access it. Is there a way to let dovecot check if the link is really a maildir, so lets say a directory with a maildirfolder file within it? Or just to hide this link from dovecot so its not advertised as an IMAP folder? Greetings, Sascha

I have recently noticed that some of our internal mailer scripts are causing Dovecot-LDA to generate Mailer Delivery Subsystem messages. I have tried to snoop through the logs (unfortunately on a very busy mail hub) using the Message-ID, however this doesn't seem to lead me back to the original message - only the MDA notification. I can only ascertain that its isolated to our scripts, as the bounces@ address is specifically used by them. Any ideas what would cause/trigger the "Unknown error" automatic rejects ? System config is -Postfix 2.3.4 with MySQL backend -Dovecot 1.0.rc26 with MySQL backend, using only deliver. All mail deliveries are otherwise fine. offlineimap looks like it will work. Do you know if it works well on big changes? I have about 1.5 gigs of email at the local site that will need to be uploaded to the main server. After its uploaded it will have to weed through it all during the sync every time. Think that will be ok? [Dovecot] Imap proxy with tls?

Hello all, I have a server with dovecot installed with imap and tls working (call that the remote server). Now I want to have a few computers at the same place to access the same account on the remote server. I have another server (call this the local server) at the local site to do this with but am not sure how to do it. The proxy setup http://wiki.dovecot.org/PasswordDatabase/ExtraFields/Proxy looks about right but that does not seem to support tls? I need tls going from the local server to the remote server. I want all emails on the remote server to be the same as on the local server. This way all clients at the local site have very fast access to email and can still get to the email when not at the local site. Any suggestions? Thanks

[Dovecot] Indexes

When something "bad" happens to the indexes, my e-mail client (Thunderbird) reports an "unable to succeed" error on opening a mailbox. Leaving that mailbox and coming back works fine. Is this expected behaviour? -- Daniel
