lost connection while sending end of data error

I use dovecot-lmtp and postfix. When I send e-mail to 2 recipients (or more) at the same time and if one of them is over quota (or under quota and the message I send is bigger than his free space) mailq shows: -Queue ID- --Size-- ----Arrival Time---- -Sender/Recipient------- 20B03336F22 26099 Thu Apr 19 18:02:47 support(a)example.com (lost connection with server25.example.org[private/dovecot-lmtp] while sending end of data -- message may be sent more than once) user1(a)example.com user2(a)example.com E-mails sent from the same domain on same server so it's a local delivery. If I send the e-mail to the over quota user ( only him on To: ) then I get a bounce that says that user is over quota which is the correct behaviour. I think the problem started after I upgrade dovecot-2.2.35 to dovecot-2.3.1. Is this a known bug?

Merging mailboxes with doveadm

Hello, I am trying to merge(=copy) all mails of all user mailboxes into one mailbox for one-time archival purposes. The command I am using is sudo doveadm -v copy -A archive(a)somedomain.net ALL The error I get for every mailbox is: doveadm(someuser1(a)somedomain.net): Error: Can't open mailbox 'a(a)somedomain.net': Mailbox doesn't exist: archive(a)somedomain.net doveadm(someuser2(a)somedomain.net): Error: Can't open mailbox 'a(a)somedomain.net': Mailbox doesn't exist: archive(a)somedomain.net [etc...] I don't exactly understand why. I think I am don't understand the 'destination' parameter correctly, so somebody can enlighten me, please? Thank you Carsten

2.3.1 -> "doveadm backup -A" not working

Hi, I'm running 2.3.1 and trying to do a backup. Wiki and manpage showes that -A will backup all mailboxes. It seems that "doveadm -Dv backup -A mdbox:/mnt/BACKUP/DOVECOT/" is saving each mailbox to " /mnt/BACKUP/DOVECOT/" but after finishing one, its overwriting the data from the previous user. So it ends with only the mails from the last user processed. I tried %u but thats not recognized and used as String in the path. Hans

The reason is quite simple: mdbox saves the data of an email in several files, so there's a good chance that those files might slightly change during backup, while with Maildir all necessary data for the restore is stored in the file names. If you want to do a consistent backup, you do need file system snapshots and should make sure that this snapshot is consistent or to turn off the mail store during backup completely. Hello, I've got a Dovecot virtual email setup using maildir as the mailbox format. I am wondering from others who have chosen dbox a comparison between maildir and dbox or those who have migrated from one format to another. I am wondering if changing to dbox would be beneficial? Thanks. Dave.

Replication between servers with different mail_home path

Hi, I have two dovecot servers that are configured to be replicated using dsync over ssh. This has been working well for a long time. Recently I changed the mail_home path on one of the servers, because of mail data migration. The old file system is still available, but has been made read-only for now – I plan to remove it once everything runs smoothly again. Now it seems replication is failing: the mail.err log file on both servers has lots of error messages saying that it tried to open a file on the old location and failed because it is read-only. Is this setup, with different mail_home paths on the two servers being replicated, even supported? If so, do I need to specify this explicitly in the configuration? I couldn't find relevant settings in the documentation.

Comparing Indexing Speed + ZFS question

Hi, have two quick questions: I am re-indexing some large mailboxes and I wanted to get some opinions on these speeds. I ran a random sort command on an unindexed mailbox in order to get it to index. Results, for a mailbox with 10GB Inbox, spread in 65 000 files: 3 UID SORT (ARRIVAL) US-ASCII OR OR OR FROM "dfgfgfgf" SUBJECT "dfgfgfgf" TO "dfgfgfgf" CC "dfgfgfgf" a03 select INBOX * SORT 3 OK Sort completed (2455.549 + 0.122 + 1.477 secs). Index cache file at the end was 31MB in size: 30756376 Apr 18 02:14 dovecot.index.cache Is that normal, slow or fast ? Second question is, how can I speed this up ? I store messages using Director over NFS , on top of ZFS. From what I've read it would be fairly safe to disable mail_fsync but I don't think that would help much with the indexing speed. Any other tips ?

Postfix sendmail cannot be called from Sieve redirect

dovecot-lda "-f" argment optional?

I use dovecot-lda to deliver incoming email from Exim to Dovecot. After having some problems with email bounces with empty envelope sender not being delivered because of an empty -f argument, I discovered that Exim can pass email to Dovecot using dovecot-lda without using the -f argument at all. Would this have any adverse effects anywhere else? The docs don't even seem to specify if -f is optional or not - but I guess it is - as it seems to be working without it. Does anybody know what is its role? I'd like to understand things a bit before I just start removing it permanently from my setup.

[bug] Auth cache, proxy and ITERINDEX

Hi, today we have exceprienced really major difficulties with our proxy backend servers. Everything started after enabling auth cache: auth_cache_size = 100M auth_cache_verify_password_with_worker = yes auth_cache_ttl = 1 hour auth_cache_negative_ttl = 1 hour Soon after we start receiving lots of calls from our customers about 'missing all e-mail messages'. This was in errors logs on master server: Apr 16 14:37:10 server00 dovecot: imap(<censored_email_address>): Error: autoexpunge: Couldn't create dovecot.autoexpunge.lock lock: file_create_locked(/var/mail/vhosts/<censored_domain>/<censored_name>/home/dovecot.autoexpunge.lock) failed: safe_mkstemp(/var/mail/vhosts/<censored_domain>/<censored_name>/home/dovecot.autoexpunge.lock) failed: No such file or directory Looks like that all users, who are placed on proxy backends, were logged correctly BUT not proxied to the right server so they saw empty mailboxes (Dovecot also created some directories on master server). What is worse, their email software deleted all local emails so they are now downloading everything from scratch (100Gs of mails so it will take some time). After auth cache was disabled, things started to go to normal EXCEPT users were reporting they don't see all folders - which was true, only few on them were visible (INBOX, trash, sent etc.). We tried everything to make them visible again, for example deleting indexes, but nothing helped. Finally, removing option ITERINDEX from mail_location helped. Can anyone explain what happened? File system permissions - setgid bit and Netapp NFS volumes

Greetings Dovecot List, I have a bit of an edge case I am trying to resolve. I am currently using dovecot on Ubuntu 14.04 - Ubuntu package version: 1:2.2.9-1ubuntu2.3 I have attached the output of doveconf -n to this email - but to describe the configuration in a nutshell: my server is configured to use Maildir storage I do not use dovecot delivery service (there is a separate program in my system delivering messages) I am using a 'checkpassword' mechanism for authentication My mail storage is mounted via NFSv3 from a Netapp Filer FAS3050 configured to set anonuid=89, read write access, and root access. Dovecot has been configured with: mail_fsync = always mail_nfs_index = yes mail_nfs_storage = yes mmap_disable = yes lock_method = fcntl In order to function with the other components of my system, the Mail Storage directories are expected to have permissions: drwx--S--- uid 89: gid 89 The oddity I am encountering came up recently when I set up a job to monitor and correct directory permissions. I found after observing the system in action that overtime, the ~/Maildir directories for all active mailboxes would mysteriously lose the setgid bit. Now, while the system still functioned, it was something unexpected so I investigated further by turning on auditd to monitor what was changing the permissions on the path. After tracing through the results, I found an entry indicating that the 'imap' process of dovecot was performing a 'chown' call on the directory, with an end result of the previous mode 2700 being changed to 0700. Now I understand that on some filesystems, a 'chown' call can end up losing any setuid or setgid bits on an inode - and apparently Netapp's WAFL file system is one of them. Looking at the dovecot source code, I *believe* the source of the chown call is in src/lib/nfs-workarounds.c function nfs_flush_chown_uid - where a 'chown' call is being used to flush NFS attribute caches? for what I believe is the purposes of ascertaining file lock status? My question for you folks is if anyone else has encountered this on other file systems (or filers) - and if there is a native method in dovecot - either the version I am currently running or an updated newer version - that allows one to either retain the permissions assigned to a directory or specify the permissions I expect on the Maildir directory structures. LDAP Homedir location: Needs dovecot restart after change it

Dear group members. I work with Dovecot and Openldap authentication. Sometimes users change departments and we need to alter their homedir location. Every time this process is needed, I perform this steps: 1 - Change homedir location in openldap 2 - Move homedir folder to the new location 3 - Re-apply permissions 4 - Remove user index folder After I do that, users cannot authenticate unless I restart dovecot, process that I would like to avoid. Can you guys give a tip on what I need to change to avoid this last problematic step? After the restart, everything works. Does the auth_cache feature also store the homedir location? Is FTS needed for Subject/Recipient/Sender server-side searches?

I've had a number of Dovecot installs happily running for quite a few years now, but I've just stumbled over a new issue. I am trying to get some iPhones to do server-side email searches through ActiveSync/Exchange protocol -> Horde -> Dovecot. The bit I can't figure out is if I need to enable and configure FTS in Dovecot for that to work? I've tested server-side email searches against the same Dovecot server on Thunderbird - through IMAP (there is an option to force the search on the server in Thunderbird) - and it is working really well and fast. I am only really interested in Sender/Recipient/Subject searches. Server-side searching is not working at the moment on the iPhones side - although I can see the ActiveSync commands being sent to Horde. Anyway, to begin with, does anybody know if server-side IMAP searches need FTS in Dovecot (Horde is talking to Dovecot through IMAP). The fact that they work fine in Thunderbird would suggest the answer is 'no' - but could someone confirm that is correct please? Anticipated thanks for any hints. I am on Dovecot 2.2.33 if in case it matters.

Preserving UIDLs is of paramount importance so that clients don't download mails again into outlook. Dear list, One of my users is reading e-mail from his phone. When he logs in, this is what I see in my logs : Apr 10 16:17:58 auth-worker(17101): Debug: sql(xxx(a)mydomain.tld,52.184.164.73): query: SELECT email as user, password FROM users WHERE email = LOWER('xxx(a)mydomain.tld') [...] Apr 10 16:17:58 imap-login: Info: Login: user=<xxx(a)mydomain.tld>, method=LOGIN, rip=52.184.164.73, lip=10.10.10.19, mpid=19286, TLS, session=<E6cEB4BprgA0uKRJ> Both lines show a remote IP of 52.184.164.73, which is strange since all my users are, and connect from, Algeria. According to the ispinfo website (http://www.ispinfo.net/isp/52.184.164.73.html) this IP belongs to Microsoft. Could it be that the outlook app uses microsoft's servers to fetch the mail before handing them to the user ? Daniel.

ACL for system users?

Hello all, I'm setting up an IMAP server with dovecot. I've set up system users with PAM authentication and Maildir maiboxes. I'd like to share mailboxes among them, but regardless of what I try, I bump into filesystem permissions. I want to have Maildirs created for new users with the right permissions. I even changed "UMASK" in file /etc/login.defs from 022 to 002, but the Maildirs are still created with 700 permissions: ls -l /home/ximplet2/ total 4 drwx------ 9 ximplet2 users 4096 Apr 12 19:10 Maildir Really there's no better way than running "chmod -R g=u /home/ximplet2/Maildir" and "chmod g+s /home/ximplet2/Maildir" for every user? Hi, This code path is only executed when there is a return-path header. Given the fact that this fails consistently, can you provide an example of a message successfully delivered using an older version of Dovecot; i.e., as it is stored in the mailbox? There should be a return-path header there. Alternatively, you could temporarily wrap dovecot-lda in a shell script that copies the message to some file you can read after. Hi, Since updating to 2.3.1 on my FreeBSD mailserver mail delivery using lda is broken if I have sieve enabled. Hello, Does anyone have the above combination going? Per the wiki: https://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/AntispamWithSieve I have configured Dovecot for imap sieve and rspamd setting up the learn sieve and shell scripts. This is working. Now i'd like to integrate roundcube's markasjunk2 plugin. Looking at it's config file I am uncertain as to which options to enable. If anyone has a working markasjunk2 roundcube config that works with dovecot and imap sieve i'd appreciate seeing it. Thanks. Dave.

Hi, there in configuration is possibile to set imap_id_log for logging Client ID e.g.: ID sent: name=Thunderbird, version=52.7.0. Is possible to set same but for POP3 or SMTP Auth ? Ideally, it would be possible to log in to the database e.g. using postlogin script. Regards, MattX

Filesystem level backups?

Up until now I've been backing up my IMAP server by taking an atomic snapshot of the entire VM, so I've not really had to worry about it. I'm moving to hosting where I have neither VM snapshots nor a filesystem that can take snapshots, so I need to think about consistent backups a bit more. Will a simple backup of all the files of an multi-dbox give me a consistent state when I recover, or do I need to do something (e.g. lock writes to the mailbox) while I run a backup? (I could use doveadm backup if I were backing up to local storage I controlled, but I'm pushing it to offsite buckets so I'd prefer to avoid backing up the entire thing locally, then copying that offsite). Hi all, Hey all, I upgraded to dovecot 2.3.1 (from 2.2.34) and noticed that the behavior for dovecot-lda changed. Apparently it no longer accepts -f "" or -f "<>? With 2.2.34, both were accepted now I get: root@mail:~# /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-lda -f "<>" lda(root): Fatal: Invalid -f parameter: Null path not allowed or root@mail:~# /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/dovecot-lda -f "" lda(root): Fatal: Invalid -f parameter: Path is empty string I guess this must be a bug? I’m in the process of upgrading an old server from Fedora 21 to something more modern. Now, Dovecot won’t let any client login to get their email. Hello, I'm wanting to make a shared folder that anyone in a domain can get to, but not anyone in any other domain. Hello list, new aspiring user here, if I'm not in the wright place sorry, I do not fund any other option for now... As from subject I'm looking for a *personal* *standalone* dovecot setup, especially I'm looking for a DSync from multiple IMAP accounts to a local maildir (to being compatible with notmuch). My actual mail setup is: OfflineIMAP that sync different mailboxes in a personal taxonomy ~/mail/$mailboxName/... and notmuch-emacs + various scripts as MUA. Local postfix just to avoid emacs freeze during send, muchsync to support It does work but is slow, buggy and sometime complicated to kept up to date (I have many homegrow spaghetti-code scripts and snippets in zsh, elisp, python etc stratified in years). My dream is switch to a local Dovecot that DSync from multiple IMAPs instead of OfflineIMAP, with sieve filters instead of homegrow scripts that wrap notmuch search --output=files | xargs ... For the MUA part I'd like to stick with notmuch. So my questions are: is possible to dsync from multiple IMAPS to a maildir? if yes does dovecot accept physical messages moves if I refile (archive etc) them via notmuch? Thanks! -- Kim ALLAMANDOLA

I am following git master-2.3 . Here's a last known reasonably good point in the tree where things worked quite well: EGIT_REPO_URI="https://github.com/dovecot/core.git" EGIT_BRANCH="master-2.3" EGIT_COMMIT="d9a1a7cbec19f4c6a47add47688351f8c3a0e372" So something after that (which could have gone into 2.3.1) has caused this. There is also a second issue of a long standing race with replication occurring somewhere whereby if a mail comes in, is written to disk, is replicated and then deleted in short succession, it will reappear again to the MUA. I suspect the mail is being replicated back from the remote. A few people have reported it over the years but it's not reliable or consistent, so it has never been fixed. And lastly there has been an ongoing but seemingly minor issue relating to locking timing out after 30s particularly on the remote host that is being replicated to. I rarely see the problem on my local disk where almost all of the mail comes in, it's almost always occurring on the replicate/remote system. For me it seems very unlikely that on an unloaded/idle VPS there are legitimate problems obtaining a lock in under 30s. This is with the default locking configuration. This problem started happening a lot more after the breakage in (1) above. These replication issues are similar, and could possibly be related. My system is Gentoo Linux keeping up with the latest kernels, and on an EXT4 FS. I am using TCPS based replication. My remote replicate is also on Gentoo Linux with EXT4 but on a Linode VPS (around 250ms latency away). I know in a later post you've said that you don't think it has anything to do with dovecot-2.3.1, so I'd be interested to know what really is the cause in that case. Reuben

Compatibility of Submission in 2.3.1

Seems that dovecot is too picky or follow the RFC too precise here to be compatible. dovecot welcome scripts for multiple domains

Hello, I've got dovecot 2.3 going, and it uses welcome scripts successfully. My question is does anyone have a script that is multi-domain capable? Currently mine sends it's welcome message from say postmaster(a)domain1.com, well I've got five domains, can I set this script up so that it's smart about them? If user(a)domain3.com logs in it would send a message from postmaster(a)domain3.com? If anyone has any welcome scripts i'm curious to take a look. Thanks. Dave.

issue with sieve forwarding after upgrade to 0.5.1

Finally I found a workaround to not depend on sendmail to forward messages using sieve: In postfix main.cf I have: authorized_submit_users = root, filter (I want only root and filter to use sendmail and block other users to send e-mails from system accounts. Only allow users to send e-mails from virtual accounts and after smtp authentication. Username filter is used for bogofilter and needs access to sendmail) And in dovecot.conf: submission_host = 138.201.248.xxx The same workaround maybe works for NoNewPrivileges too as the authorized_submit_users setting in postfix has similar result.

GFS2 writes extremely slow

Hello all, We are facing extremely slow GFS2 issues in Redhat 7 64 bit. Backend is 16 Gbps FC SAN so no issues there. I have scoured the entire (anyways most of the) Internet and arrived at the following settings. mmap_disable = yes mail_fsync = always mail_nfs_storage = yes mail_nfs_index = yes mmap_disable = yes lock_method = fcntl Did a systemctl restart dovecot and did not find any major improvement. I have to be clear on that to move forward. I have tried finding solutions about it but couldn't find anything which talks about it. We have a setup which includes postfix and dovecot. We are using lmtp and delivery of mail is happening through dovecot. We want that delivery of mail should happen in a separate node. I was able to achieve it through lmtp by providing ip address and using port 24. But now I have been asked to just try to deliver to a separate storage medium and not node. That means it will have an ip address but no dovecot or other software running. This is in relation to incorporation of storage area network (SAN) later on. Is it possible? I thought there must be some way as many running mail systems are using message store and SAN. All i can find that was close was mailbox sharing and email archiving. Please help me about this as I have already spent 3 days to it with no luck. I just want the right direction to move forward on this. Regards

Hello, After I upgrade dovecot 2.2.35 to 2.3.1 and pigeonhole 0.4.23 to 0.5.1 when I use sieve to forward a message to other address using "redirect :copy" I get this: (host server1.myserver.com <http://server1.myserver.com/>[private/dovecot-lmtp] said: 451 4.2.0 <chris(a)mydomain.com <mailto:chris@mydomain.com>> Execution of Sieve filters was aborted due to temporary failure (in reply to end of DATA command)) And in sieve log I see: failed to redirect message to <chris(a)mydomain.com <mailto:chris@mydomain.com>>: Sendmail program returned error (temporary failure). Saving Drafts with Roundcube marks old Mails in INBOX as unread.

Hello List, I have a problem with the client Roundcube. Whenever I save a draft to the Folder INBOX.Drafts a old mail in my INBOX will be marked as unread. Here are the IMAP Logs from Roundcube and Dovecot debug logs. I have no idea why it happens. Use of separate storage for mail delivery

Hi I am facing one issue which is mostly about concepts. I have to be clear on that to move forward. I have tried finding solutions about it but couldn't find anything which talks about it. We have a setup which includes postfix and dovecot. We are using lmtp and delivery of mail is happening through dovecot. We want that delivery of mail should happen in a separate node. I was able to achieve it through lmtp by providing ip address and using port 24. But now I have been asked to just try to deliver to a separate storage medium and not node. That means it will have an ip address but no dovecot or other software running. This is in relation to incorporation of storage area network (SAN) later on. Is it possible? I thought there must be some way as many running mail systems are using message store and SAN. All i can find that was close was mailbox sharing and email archiving. Please help me about this as I have already spent 3 days to it with no luck. I just want the right direction to move forward on this. Regards

I do have customers being serviced at these productive servers, *thus* I'm back to 2.2.35 until I do understand or have learned what is going on. Any ideas/feedback? multi-site SSL certificates

I'm handling mail for several domains, let's call them a.com, b.com, and c.com. I have certificates for each of these domains individually via certbot (letsencrypt) and nginx is happy with all of that. Since I initially configured the site to handle mail only for a.com, my /etc/postfix/main.cf file currently has these two lines: smtpd_tls_cert_file = /etc/letsencrypt/live/mail.a.com/fullchain.pem smtpd_tls_key_file = /etc/letsencrypt/live/mail.a.com/privkey.pem But I see that mail test tools are reporting that MX for b.com and c.com are misconfigured due to an SSL name mismatch. Indeed, this is true! So I believe I should generate a multi-site SSL cert. I try this: sudo certbot certonly --cert-name postfix --webroot \ --webroot-path /var/www/a-com -d www.a.com -d a.com -d mail.a.com \ --webroot-path /var/www/b-com -d www.b.com -d b.com \ --webroot-path /var/www/c-com -d www.c.com -d c.com And that fails with a bunch of errors like this: Domain: www.a.com Type: unauthorized Detail: Invalid response from http://www.a.com/.well-known/acme-challenge/IT7-YURAep4bniD9zYpKpdRUBQcgCRJ…: "<html> <head><title>404 Not Found</title></head> <body bgcolor="white"> <center><h1>404 Not Found</h1></center> <hr><center>" I see that the file .well-known/acme-challenge/IT7-YURAep4bniD9zYpKpdRUBQcgCRJ6FflmZzWQGNg is being created (and one other file, too) but that nginx reports that the _directory_ .well-known/acme-challenge/IT7-YURAep4bniD9zYpKpdRUBQcgCRJ6FflmZzWQGNg doesn't exist. Multi-site + letsencrypt + postfix is a subject that has recently changed quite a bit, so I'm suspecting my web reading is merely leading me astray. It is also entirely possible I've misunderstood things about SSL certificates. Any pointers how to generate (or point to) the certificates that I need to make those who contact my postfix instance happy with their SSL conversation? Thanks!
