Hi, Reverting http://hg.dovecot.org/dovecot-1.2/raw-rev/2cdfcca171d8 solves this problem. Is there a preferred way to fix this issue? Hi All, My server is running with Dovecot 1.2.11 and openldap 2.4.17 it was working fine but suddenly my dovecot auth started to failing sometimes. After restarting dovecot everything will work fine. The slapd log file is showing "deffering operation: too many executing". When i googled i have seen that if the client is not properly disconnecting the connection slapd will give this error. I did Dovecot profiling on huge e-mail system, and p_strdup was very high on list. [Dovecot] maildirsize having incorrect content, how to recreate/correct?

Hi List, I have (otherwise successfull) migrated a server from cyrus to dovecot (Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 to 10.6.4 [dovecotd version to be 1.1.20apple0.5]). There are ca. 300+ users of which a very small handfull (ca. 1 %) are having reported a usage size that is very different to what 'du' reports. How can I rebuild the maildirsize and why might it be wrong in the first place(?) Will the maildirsize files be regenerated if deleted and when will this then happen ( at the next time of the user logging in or…) >From what I can read here: http://www.inter7.com/courierimap/README.maildirquota.html The maildirsize file contains (in linenumber > 1) "bytecount SPACE filecount" I also have one (perhaps more) user with one line having a negative value in maildirsize (-138204393 -2294) how can that happen / be corrected? When I run it myself with "--help", it just does it all again and says "SSL parameters regeneration completed". Hi, since I use TLS I'm getting the following waning when I send mail to somebody in the internet:| "warning: network_biopair_interop: error reading 5 bytes from the network: Connection reset by peer|" ... Mail seems to be delivered & sent as usual. I found a post about it: http://de.postfix.org/pipermail/postfix-users/2009-March/000891.html but it didn't help to involve: "smtpd_tls_ask_ccert=no" Did anybody face that issue before? Is there a feature or plugin to restrict access to IMAP/POP service by the domain name in reverse lookup? It would be even better if this restriction can exclude certain users (e.g. some users can access IMAP from certain networks but other users cannot). -- sHiFt HaPpEnS!

Dear Dovecot lovers! When starting Dovecot 1.x the first time, it runs "ssl-build-params" to generate a file named "ssl-parameters.dat". This takes a couple of minutes. During this time users have no access to their mail, but this can be planned in advance and users can be notified. This is explained in http://wiki.dovecot.org/SSL/DovecotConfiguration With Dovecot 2.0.rc4, the new command "ssl-params" seems to do this job, but unfortunately it isn't run on first start of Dovecot but the start is delayed until a user connects to port 993 (or does STARTTLS in 143). According to http://wiki2.dovecot.org/SSL/DovecotConfiguration it should behave the same way as Dovecot 1 did. So, with Dovecot 2.0.rc4 it hits the first user who wants to establish a secure connection. It's hard to explain this to users. ;-) Of course, I could simply run "telnet <imaphost> 993" manually after installation. I also tried running "ssl-params" manually before starting Dovecot but it stays in foreground forever and doesn't seem to finish (what is it waiting for?) So it would be really great if Dovecot 2 could do this on its own like Dovecot 1 did. Besides that, Dovecot 2.0 runs like a charm ... Andreas

Hello, the migration guide from Courier-IMAP to Dovecot says that I should change the folders namespace to "INBOX." if I want a seamless migration. Isn't it that e-mail clients determine that namespace automatically? At least I never needed to enter one in Thunderbird and then it was there. [Dovecot] Dovecot 2.0.rc4 core dumped with Alpine 2.00

Hi Timo and all others! The current Dovecot 2.0.rc4 did really well with Mutt 1.5.20 and Thunderbird 3.1.2, but a user with Alpine 2.00 crashed it immediately. I'm running Fedora 13 (Linux) and compiled Dovecot 2.0.rc4 manually like I did before with Dovecot 1.2.13. When switching from 1.2 to 2.0 I removed all those ".imap" folders with internal cache data (didn't know for sure if it's compatible between both version). All folders are in mbox format. When Alpine is started, the first crash happens. Alpine notifies the user that there was a problem connecting the IMAP server. No mail is display. And then the second crash happens. Looks like Alpine starts a second try to connect to the IMAP server before displaying the (empty) screen with (no) folders. [Dovecot] Dovecot and Active Directory separate domain data stores.

Hi, I've got Dovecot setup to auth my AD users fine via Winbind and I've also tried it using LDAP and can get this working also. The problem lies in the way we store our email for our virtual users in this setup. We run a flat domain for AD (lets call it newzealand.local), and then under each users account that gets email, in the E-mail field in AD, they have an email address like user1@auckland, user2@wellington, user3@chch and so on. With Postfix, I've set it up so that each email domain ends up being stored in a different path - /mail/auckland/user1, /mail/wellington/user2, /mail/chch/user3. This was done using a query filter that returned a person's email address from AD, chopped it into separate user/domain parts around the '@' symbol and using these to determine where the mail should be stored. This seems to work well for our purposes. But now I need to get Dovecot to be able to do the same thing in order to present the email to the user. I'm fairly certain this isn't going to work with Winbind, so I implemented the LDAP passdb and got that working, but I can't seem to quite work out how to get it to work with the domain part from the email address. Could someone give me a pointer in the right direction if this is possible. I'm thinking it has to do with the user_attrs variable, but can't quite workout how I would split this. Or is there a better way to do this? Thanks, Andrew

[Dovecot] Setting up webmail in DMZ

I have a Smoothwall server on my network and am running three network interfaces off it. 1) local LAN 192.168.0.0 with PCs and an internal dovecot server on 192.168.0.154. 2) internet interface 3) DMZ 192.168.2.0 which has a linux web server 192.168.2.1 on which I want to install a webmail so I can access my email remotely. Originally 192.168.2.1 couldn't see the 192.168.0.0 network but with some help from the Smoothwall forums I have fixed that. The problem now is that 192.168.2.1 can't connect to the dovecot server on 192.168.0.154. When I "telnet 192.168.0.154 993" or "telnet 192.168.0.154 143" I get a "Connection refused" error. But these commands work fine from PCs on the 192.168.0.0 network. I'm pretty sure there's no firewall on the dovecot server and /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny are empty. Is there a default setting that I need to change in Dovecot that only allows connections from machines on the same subnet?

Thanks Jerrale, I'm currently running the following dovecot packages: dovecot-plugins-sieve-1.2.6-1.1mdv2010.0 dovecot-1.2.6-1.1mdv2010.0 I don't use mysql with dovecot. I do use sieve. Your IMAP command could not be sent to the server, due to non-network errors. This could, for example, indicate a lack of memory on your system. Configuration: Account: Sheltoncomputers (testuser) Server: mail.sheltoncomputers.com User name: testuser(a)sheltoncomputers.com Protocol: IMAP Port: 993 Secure(SSL): 1 Code: 800cccdf The console I'm using is 4 GB ram; so, this dumb error of windoze dead mail is irrelevant. The other mechanisms of TLS/no tls plain login work fine. The passwords are stored in mysql as md5(password) but this works on others not using cram-md5 (secure login of the client). Hi All, Loving Dovecot after several years with Cyrus. This might be more a general question, but this seemed the best place to ask. The idea is to just add up all the values of quotes I've sent in a month. I want to search my Sent mail folder for all messages with a certain subject, then "grep" out a certain line that has a dollar ($) figure, and add up those figures. Hi, I'm looking for a way to deliver mail to both 'folder' and '.folder'. I put LAYOUT=fs to mail_location, sieve recognize both 'folder' and '.folder', but I don't want dovecot-imap to show 'folder' to imap client. The purpose is to send some emails to 'folder' and don't let user to see the folder and email in it. I'm using dovecot-1.2.13 and dovecot-1.2-sieve-0.1.17. Can someone help me with the configuration. [Dovecot] Strange behaviour when add new mailbox to IMAP (v 1.2.13)

Hi, I think I need to ask you for advice. Personally I face that for the first time and hardly imagine this could be possible at all, but... My setup is simple: I have one mail server where all of my mail accounts are stored, and another one to store backup of all mailings. The scheme is simple, SMTP on first server forwards a copy of each message to address catchall(a)secondserver.my-domain. So whenever I need to restore any message I'll simple search for it on second server. Both servers are have Dovecot 1.2.13 as IMAP servers. First server's Dovecot is sql-backed one, the second server's (in fact it serving just one box) is using passwd-style text file auth. Other than this, setup is pretty similiar, and everything is well, but here is the mystery: I use Thunderbird (yesterday it was 3.1.1 and now it is 3.1.2) as my IMAP client. When I connect to my IMAP account on second server, and create mailbox, I see that there appears greyed folder named #virtual^Sent , and my new mailbox is in it. When I do the same thing on first server, everything works just as I expect it (new mailbox created right under root of my IMAP account). If I create on second server new mailbox right under any existing (say, under Inbox) everything is fine also. To check the problem I simplified my Dovecot config to the bare minimum, and it also won't work (#virtual^Sent still there). When I see on server disk, I see there .#virtual^Sent.NewTestMailbox dir (NewTestMailbox is the test mailbox I created), but there is no .#virtual^Sent dir. I rebuilt Dovecot, and also tried to build 1.2.12, none worked. May there be any solution for that? Yours, Alexander Chekalin

[Dovecot] Problem creating sockets after Solaris Live Upgrade

Hello, I use Solaris Live Upgrade to install solaris patches in an alternate boot environment. Unfortunately the dovecot sockets /opt/local/var/run/dovecot/dict-server and /opt/local/var/run/dovecot/login/default are created as normal files in the ABE. After switching to the ABE dovecot will not start because of the existence of these two files. After removing these files dovecot starts normally. I think that dovecot should create the sockets even if there exist files with the same names. Hello, I will use expire like described within wiki2.dovecot.org/Plugins/Expire with sqlite for a folder AutoCleanSpam. If I copy a message (with TB) into that folder, I get an error if there exists no entry for that user and that folder within the database: dict: Error: sqlite: exec(INSERT INTO expires (expire_stamp,username,mailbox) VALUES ('1281016832','userx','AutoCleanSpam')) failed: unable to open database file (14) dict: Error: sql dict: commit failed: If I make an initial entry manually first no error occurs. Anymore there is a problem concerning acl of the base directory of the expires.db: dict: Error: sqlite: open(/addons/expire/expires.db) failed: unable to open database file dict: Error: dict sql lookup failed: out of memory It was necessary to give "other" r-x permissions for directory /addons/expire. I use mail_uid = sysdov and mail_gid = sysdov. That is uid 29. Hello! We experienced crashes of the dovecot-auth process during user verification with pam_ssh. After a little debugging I saw that pam_ssh and dovecot both provide a buffer_free() function. During cleanup of pam_ssh the buffer_free() from dovecot was called. The members of the buffer had all "out of bound" addresses. After rename the buffer_free() in dovecot the pam login works fine. Hallo, is it possible (with dovecot sieve?) to deliver incoming mails to the default INBOX and then, when I have read the mail with Thunderbird, automatically move it to another folder? I know I could create filters in my mail client. But that has the disadvantage that I would need to create these filters everywhere: on my office PC, at home, webmail, ... Also moving a mail from one folder to another marks the original mail as deleted, at least in Thunderbird. Maybe other clients finally delete the mail. Therefore that would be really cool. Another related problem for me is: how can I automatically move outgoing mails to another folder? I created sieve-rules but it doesn't work - the mails remain in the folder "sent-mail". Hi, I have a relatively new installation with LDAP and Postfix, running smoothly on CentOS but it logs dovecot messages both in /var/log/messages and in /var/log/dovecot.log. I have configured it to log in /var/log/dovecot.log (with syslog_facility: local1 and a respective line in syslog.conf, see below) but it also logs in /var/log/messages. As a result, I would expect it to only log into /var/log/dovecot.log. Can someone suggest why this happens and help me stop logging dovecot messages in /var/log/messages ? Could it be because the following directive (in syslog.conf) does not capture dovecot messages to exclude them? *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none /var/log/messages Could I use something like (in syslog.conf): *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none;dovecot.none /var/log/messages to capture dovecot messages and *exclude* them from /var/log/messages ? [Dovecot] Cyrus to Dovecot migration (OS X Server): Backup + restore messages, live "standby server" and delayed expunge and…

Hi List, I am very close to migrating from Cyrus to Dovecot (to be more precise from Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 to 10.6.4). The latter is reporting the dovecotd version to be 1.1.20apple0.5. All I have read about dovecot is extremely positive so I am exited to make the switch. BACKUP: BUT I would like to be sure that I can make a sound backup strategy. For Cyrus i used topicdesk's mailbfr (a script that stops the mailservice and then rsync's the mailstore to a backup location incrementing daily and restarting a complete backup weekly). This script is not yet ready for Dovecot, but from what I have read it should be as easy as "just" backing up the mail-data (/var/spool/imap/dovecot/mail in OS X), eg. with rsync. Our current setup is requiring ca. 11 hours for a full (200+ GB) backup (weekly) this is not good for uptime… RESTORE: Restore should be the same (well reverse) "just" restoring the files and making sure the get the correct permissions. What I am not sure about is the (cyrus specific) need for reconstructing the database, as I have read (on this list) it seems that dovecot is designed better and will "automatically" recognised the restored messages without the need to reconstruct any databases or stopping+restarting the service. Is this really true ,-)? NB.: For restores I plan to always restore to a specific subfolder for the user (eg RESTORED MAIL) as opposed to placing the mails within the folder hierachy LIVE BACKUP SERVER I have been told, that dovecot provides clever mechanisms for making it possible to synchronise the data to a "hot-spare" server. Both for being able to provide access to the data during breakdown or planned maintenance, but perhaps also to make backups easier (perhaps not needed?) DELAYED DELETION OF MESSAGES I believe that the feature is called "delayed expunge", a way of not deleting the messages until after an additional delay from the time the user deletes the message. Is this possible in dovecot? DOCUMENTATION Where would the best FAQ/KB for getting to know dovecot better be, perhaps there have even been written good books (I know old fashioned, but I really like the physical hands on a real book provides ;-) It's a lot of questions and I hope for good pointers to where I can find more documentation and good feedback from the list. [Dovecot] IMAP IDLE, Virtual mailboxes

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, K-9 Mail (on Android) has been mentioned on this list multiple times recently, I think it's definitely an IMAP client "on the rise". :) It supports IMAP IDLE, and so brings "push mail" to Android mobile phone users. To bring this into the context of this mailing list: I guess a lot of people on this list are making use of server-side filtering (using sieve), so that mails from certain persons or mailing lists end up in the right mailboxes, right on delivery. Now, this is all great, but there are issues when server-side filtering and IMAP IDLE come together: Only one mailbox can be "watched" with one IMAP IDLE connection. So, people who have set up elaborate server-side filtering with say, 50 different sieve "fileinto" calls, will constantly have a *lot* of IMAP IDLE connections open, if they really want to get informed of any mail arriving in any of their mailboxes. Keeping those 50 IMAP connections open wouldn't cost much bandwidth, and who cares about the Internet router's connection tables getting unnecessarily big, anyway? But then there is the "problem" of a mobile phone being carried around constantly, switching physical connections (from WLAN access point 1 to WLAN access point 2 to 3G to 2G to no connection at all and back), every time needing to terminate* those 50 IMAP connections, and then establish 50 new ones (with SSL handshake overhead and all). So, all in all, not an optimal solution. *) (which does not always happen the way it should, see http://code.google.com/p/k9mail/issues/detail?id=1255) I see two ways to improve the situation (one of them quite dovecot-centric): 1) A new extension of the IMAP protocol: IMAP MULTI-IDLE, which somehow allows a client to get notified of changes to more than one mailbox within one IMAP connection. This conflicts with the basic IMAP design though, AFAIK, and is thus not likely to be feasible. 2) Enhancing dovecot's Virtual plugin, so virtual mailboxes do not only get updated on select and expunge, but also when anything changes that affects the set of messages shown in the virtual mailbox. I guess that would have an impact on performance, and thus should be optional. Let me explain the second one: With the help of the Virtual plugin, it is possible to pull all those 50 mailboxes that receive incoming mail together again, just like the INBOX of the pre-server-side-filtering times - the user could configure a virtual mailbox to show all unread mails from those 50 mailboxes. Now the mobile IMAP IDLE users could just watch that one virtual mailbox, needing only one IMAP IDLE connection. After having read the mail (directly in the virtual mailbox), it would disappear, but of course still be in the "real" mailbox, determined by the sieve filter on delivery. [Dovecot] sender address of sieve vacation script

Hi, not entirerly sure wether this is the right place to ask. Sorry if not. I´m running dovecot on a Mac OS X Server (10.6.4). Everything works fine. When I try to enable a vacation message, I get the following error in the log: delays=0/0.01/0.09/0.1, dsn=5.0.0, status=bounced (host XXX[x.x.x.x] said: 553 Mail to <name(a)domain.tld> not allowed; missing domain name in MAIL FROM (in reply to RCPT TO command)) Where host is the mail relay. The logs on the mail relay show matching entries. Sending mails is generally working. I´ve sniffed the network traffic and the FROM Field in the SMTP transfer contains only the following text: <> I´ve allready set the value of myorigin in /private/etc/postfix/ main.cf but to no avail. I didn't find anything interesting in the search, so I just wanted to see what other people have done (or thought about doing). I'd like to be able to access my dovecot server via IMAP, from the Internet, using the integrated e-mail client from a smart phone. I'm very concerned about security and don't feel comfortable just poking holes into the firewall for direct access from the Internet. Is there a better way to do this? Hey folks, I recently upgraded my mail server from an older OpenBSD -CURRENT snapshot to the latest (Aug 1). As part of this upgrade, I updated all of my packages to their latest versions. Since this upgrade, dovecot has begun failing to authenticate intermittently. I use it primarily for web mail (Squirrelmail 1.4.20) and leave myself logged in during the day. This problem manifests itself by kicking me back to the "Username or password incorrect" screen occasionally (several times an hour) when the page refreshes. I am not using sieve, and while I have the PostgreSQL version of the OpenBSD package installed, I do not currently use it for authentication. I am authenticating against the OpenBSD system. The only error I get in the mail log is: Aug 3 11:00:09 fusion dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login (auth failed, 1 attempts): user=<benny>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured There are no errors in the Apache error log... Squirrelmail's version wasn't upgraded, so I don't think this is a Squirrelmail problem as far as I can tell. [Dovecot] IMAP/POP3 Proxy Redundancy

Looking over the list archives and Wiki there doesn't seem to be any sort of built-in host redundancy with the proxy. I would prefer to use a built in though it doesn't look like this is possible. One of the suggestions that I found in the list archives was to write a script which checks the health of the hosts and adjusts the MySQL table accordingly. I know this unnecessary lookups question is really a postfix one, but I'm curious if anyone else sees the behaviour of postfix continuing looking up users after it clearly have got its answer that it is "not a local domain" response.
