Hi all my Linux system: opensuse 11.2 my mail system: postfix - dovecot my key problem since several days googling and testing is: how can I have a pop account with dovecot for a user if that user is NO linux system user it appears to me that most auth mechanisms somehow expect a mail user also to be a linux system user either to be found in the /etc/passwd or /etc/alias on my 4 servers I have NO users at all registered, NO login at all for any normal user - incl me. [Dovecot] dovecot ldap search result ordering?

I use openLDAP as dovecot pass/user db. here is main part of dovecot-ldap.conf: pass_attrs = mail=user, uid=userdb_home=/home/xadmin/%d/%$,userPassword=password pass_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(uid=%u)) default_pass_scheme = SSHA user_attrs = mail=user, uid=home=/home/xadmin/%d/%$ user_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(|(mail=%u)(mailAlias=%u))) It works fine, but some account failed to get their domain in pass_attrs. I check the log. when it success, the result order is "mail, uid, userPassword" when it failed, the order is "userPassword, uid, mail" we just use a username to login. [Dovecot] dovecot 1.2.11/ thunderbird 3.1 - moving folders

Hello List, customers telled me problem when moving folders in thunderbird which i can confirm. Following setup on my side: dovecot 1.2.11 with mbox. Thunderbird 3.1 with ready mailaccount and "Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages" is disabled. i create folder1 for subfolders and in folder1 a folder2 for mails. Now i create folder3 on toplevel like just like folder1 for subfolders. Now i drag/dop folder2 to folder3. Thunderbird is moving this folder successful but in folder1/.imap i can still see a folder folder2 which is containing a dovecot.index.log At this point thunderbird shows error-message when i start to delete folder1. It tells: [CANNOT] Mailbox is'nt selectable: folder1. AND [NONEXISTENT] Directory folder1 is'nt empty, can't delete it. What to do now? Is error on my or thunderbirds side? Parts of my config needed? [Dovecot] Quota in mysql dict not properly recalculated on 1.2?

Good morning, I am trying to add quota storage on mysql following the guide in the wiki http://wiki.dovecot.org/Quota/Dict, and I am having some problems. My setup works fine for the newly created accounts, and correctly increases/decreases quota when necessary. The wrong part seems to be the recalculation. It seems to me that the system doesn't count the real occupation when it has to recreate the quota entry for a username. This is the case: .- User test(a)testing.com has a quota 200000 bytes, I delete the entry of the database for user, and then when I do the: echo 'x GETQUOTAROOT Inbox' | USER=test(a)testing.com /usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail imap .- These are ALL the queries I see, I am missing the userdb queries to get the real quota. Is it possible with a simple config change to make address extensions, e.g. alice+sales(a)example.com, go into a folder, e.g. .INBOX.sales, and do so ONLY if that folder already exists (and just go into INBOX if it does not exist)?

It took a bit of hacking to get it working again as can be seen by the sql query, however now imap doesn't work anymore because of that change. I'm a total newbie with Dovecot LDA and LDAP. To be honoust, I don't know what I'm doing. My system runs CentOS 5.5, Postfix 2.3.3 and Dovecot 1.2.11. I try to set up Dovecot LDA. Hi, I have some problem in Dovecot authorization in Exim for outgoing SMTP. Version of Exim is 4.69 and the Exim was compiled with "AUTH_DOVECOT=yes" and "AUTH_PLAINTEXT=yes". Version of Dovecot is 1.2.12. I use SSL for IMAP. Is Exim neccesary to use SSL(TLS) for authorization of outgoing SMTP? Hi, We have a mail server with the postfix/Squirrelmail/Dovecot(v.1.1.11) combination which we have user data on MySQL through virtual users. We have configured the SquirrelMail interface so that users can now change their own passwords. Is there any opensource solution to provide "self service password management" which would allow us to add the "I forgot my password. [Dovecot] Use both SQL and LDAP

Hey guys, I am just wondering if it is possible to use both SQL and LDAP queries at the same time to get information. Example on why I want to do this: I work at a school where we have the need for 2 separate types of mailbox configuration (better wording is eluding me at the moment). Staff and Students currently share the same email server. I would like to be able to give staff a bigger inbox (eg: 500MB) than students (eg: 50MB). The way I am thinking, if this is even possible, to pull username and group membership from Active Directory. Check the groups against a SQL query to give the user the appropriate mailbox size. Also, having email is a privilege, not a right at my school so is it also possible to check if a user is part of a BannedEmailUsers or AllowedEmailUser group so I could quickly and effectively disable accounts as needed. I apologise if this is a little hard to follow. Writing what I want has never been a strongpoint for me J I also apologise if this has been asked, or information is available somewhere. Hello all, I've been trying to setup my postfix and dovecot to AUTH with mysql, and I'm almost there! BUT, for some reason, dovecot won't create the folders in their proper location. For some reason, instead of going into /var/vmail/pplsnet.com/{username}location, where the postfix put all the emails, dovecot creates a whole new set of folders in /var/vmail/{username} I have attempted to force dovecot to put into a sub directly, without using the %d, but that doesn't work either: #mail_location = mbox:/var/vmail/%d/%n mail_location = mbox:/var/vmail/pplsnet.com/%n Where do I look to figure out why its not putting it into the %d/%n location? does it have to do with the fact that AUTH graps the username, and NOT the domain name? (via mysql)? Hello, I'm setting up a dovecot-2.0.beta6 install and I'm experiencing the following issues/questions : 1. Converting the config file # /usr/local/dovecot-2/bin/doveconf -n -c /usr/local/dovecot-1.2.12/etc/dovecot.conf : [...] doveconf: Fatal: Error in configuration file /usr/local/dovecot-1.2.12/etc/dovecot.conf line 176: Unknown setting: process_limit but # grep -i process_limit /usr/local/dovecot-1.2.12/etc/dovecot.conf # Well, it doesn't bother me much since I made the dovecot-2 conf from scratch anyway. 2. Changing the process limit In 10-master.conf, I changed 'service imap''s 'process_limit' from 1024 to 4096 which caused : Warning: service auth { client_limit=4096 } is lower than required under max. load (5320) Where does the 5320 come from ? 3. The = <file syntax Is there anything to know about this new syntax other than files are introduced by "<" ? 4. The "filter" hierarchy My understanding is that protocol, remote, local must be specified in the following order protocol name { remote <ip|name> { local <ip|name> { and that for a match in several blocks, the more specific wins. but it's not clear to me where they are valid and if we can negate (with a ! for instance) an argument. For instance, I want to implement the typical case of "let clients from the inside network perform a plain auth over a clear connection, require SSL before auth for the outside network clients". Hi all, my first post. After years with an old server, a couple of months ago I've installed a new one. We use IMAP. After research, I chosed dovecot. It has been running for several weeks but from one week ago or so, it suddently dies about once per day. The only change done in the server one week ago has been to install ntpdate, running once per day in cron-daily. In the cron reports, ntpdate reports a time-jump of 9 seconds each night. We did this because "apparently" we did not a "soft time drift" installing the full ntp daemon, but I start thinking the time-jump crashes dovecot. QUESTIONS: - Might this time-jump cause dovecot to die? - I don't know wehere the dovecot logs are written to. Where do I start searching? Thanks to all! Hello, i have a problem with the managesieve plugin and a virtual namespace in v2.0. The managesieve plugin complains about an unknown storage driver virtual when i try to log intot the managesieve. I don't know if this is quite a recent problem or if it exists for a while, as i configured the virtual namspace from scratch. (The virtual namespace itself is working.) Hi, We have a mail server with the postfix/Squirrelmail/Dovecot(v.1.1.11) combination which we have user data on MySQL as virtual users. We have configured the SquirrelMail interface so that users can now change their own passwords. Is there any opensource solution to provide "self service password management" which would allow us to add the "I forgot my password. Hi all, ok, I am running version v2.0.beta6 and the latest pigeonhole build to run managesieve and the sieve delivery filters... I am getting the following response from the managesieve port when connecting : Escape character is '^]'. "IMPLEMENTATION" "Dovecot" "SIEVE" "" "SASL" "PLAIN" "STARTTLS" "VERSION" "1.0" OK "Dovecot ready." But, I think that the SIEVE line is suppose to have all of the supported sieve functions like so : "SIEVE" "comparator-i;ascii-numeric fileinto reject vacation imapflags notify include envelope body relational regex subaddress copy" I modified the dovecot sieve config file to try and add (although they should all be added by default), and it still comes up blank... Am I missing something? what might cause it to not broadcast the sieve implementations that it has? Thanks, Tim.

I was going to ask how much space I should allocate for auth_cache_size - but decided to read the wiki first. Now I'll be more specific - Wiki says about 50 bytes per passdb, and up to 200 bytes for userdb - so my arithmetic says each combined entry needs 250 bytes budgeted. Assuming that's correct, I need some clarification. Let's start small. Assume ten users, all connected - and everybody also likes looking at everybody else's mailbox. So there are ten clients, each with at least ten connections (I say at least because each folder viewed within an account is its own connection, right?). How is the auth_cache used? If I have ten user/pass combinations - is that all that is stored? Or are there connection-specific entries as well? In other words, for the above example, do I have 10 x 250 bytes yields auth_cache_size=3, or do I need 10 x 10 x 250 yields auth_cache_size=30 - or am I totally off? -- Daniel

I've mostly got our dovecot+postfix+SOGo+openldap open source groupware replacement working the way I want it to; we're replacing GroupWise in our organization and I'm thrilled to be doing it. I'm supporting about 1,000 active staff users (and another 6,000 student accounts). I've got e-mail and calendar sharing working, and it does what it says it will do, but it is (go figure) different in concept from Proxy access under GroupWise. In GroupWise, I can give my secretary proxy access to my account and she can read all of my folders, see my calendars, and send e-mail as me. To someone that receives an e-mail or appointment request from her while she's proxied to me, there's no distinction at all. Is there a way to mimic this sort of functionality with the tools I've chosen? I've figured out that I can add additional 'mail' attributes to the secretary's record, and those addresses are available as drop-down choices in the SOGo web interface, but with the secretary's name and not the manager. Any advice will be much appreciated. And many thanks to the developers involved for writing and making available such amazingly good software. Eliminating the license fees we've been paying to Novell is allowing me to save a technician that surely would have been eliminated in budget cuts this year. Hi Timo, ok, using the latest 2.0beta6... I can't figure out the settings for the log file to have the correct permissions. When the log file is created, it is created owned by root and 0600 permissions, which doesn't allow the lda to write to it if I use different users and groups for that main config... If I then chmod the log file to 666, then everything is happy, but again, if that log file is removed and created by dovecot, it will create it back with 0600 and the lda will error and not deliver mail because of it... [Dovecot] Postfix, MySQL, Dovecot LDA and alias domains

Hi there, I have a postfix/postfixadmin/mysql/dovecot install that was using 'virtual' for the LDA. I tried the 'dovecot' LDA to enable Sieve but ran into trouble with aliases. With domain "some-domain.com" being an alias to "somedomain.com", mail sent to *(a)somedomain.com would be delivered to the Maildir fine, but the 'dovecot' LDA tossed "unknown user" for anything sent to *(a)some-domain.com (the alias to the other domain). My dovecot.sql: driver = mysql connect = host=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock dbname=postfix user=dovecot password=dovecot user_query = SELECT concat('/home/vmail/', maildir) as home, concat('maildir:/home/vmail/', maildir) as mail, 5000 AS uid, 5000 AS gid, concat('maildir:storage=', quota) AS quota FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' AND active = '1' password_query = SELECT username as user, password, concat('/home/vmail/', maildir) as userdb_home, concat('maildir:/home/vmail/', maildir) as userdb_mail, 5000 as userdb_uid, 5000 as userdb_gid FROM mailbox WHERE username = '%u' AND active = '1' The problem is fairly simple: Dovecot isn't being told anything about the 'alias_domain' table that pairs alias domains with actual ones. So the question is: do I add a second "user_query" in dovecot.sql, or is there an "alias_query" directive, or similar? And does anyone have a query that would point an alias domain to the real maildir? - Darek

[Dovecot] Outlook problem

Hi, I have some problems that every time I start Outlook and retrieve my e-mails and then later tries to do it on my iPhone for example, I get some sort of problem that I can't get the mails. I searched around on the wiki and found the "outlook-no-nuls" and "outlook-idle" options, but where am I suppose to add them? I only have "pop3_uidl_format = %08Xu%08Xv" in my "protocol pop3 {}" and it didn't work to add it to a new line there. Thanks, Patric

Hello, I am having this error message on some rare emails with more than 6 mb or so. Neither the dovecot server nor the filesystem where the maildir resides have any quota or are full at the time of delivering. The mails goes getmail->postfix->dovecot delivery agent Is the mail written to any other place than the maildir folder? Even though all my temp folders should also be able to hold some megabytes... [Dovecot] New mailbox & autocreate

Hi, First of all BIG THANKS for great piece of software. I have a small problem with autocreate. My mails are stored in: /var/mail Ex. /var/mail/test(a)test.pl/Maildir Account information comes from DB. So when new account appears in DB full path including home dir is created. But there is one small problem: Group always is "wheel". Autocreating ignores gid from DB and uses the group of the parent directory - in this case /var/mail. But when I create home dir manualy (setting right group) group of autocreated Maildir is OK. Is it possible to configure dovecot to set group from DB. Regards, Bambero
