I'm running dovecot 1.0.7 on CentOS 5.5, and I've configured it to work with PostfixAdmin (http://sourceforge.net/projects/postfixadmin/) Everything seems to work great, except for one problem. Will it impact performance, or can it be safely ignored? 2) If it is something that should be addressed, do you think I would be better off trying to patch and recompile the 1.0.7 version, or just upgrading to a newer version of Dovecot (keeping in mind that 1.0.7 seems to be the latest available in CentOS repositories) Thank you for your time, and your outstanding software. -Brendan

Thanks for the information. I'm not trying to waste your time, and I wasn't really asking for 'help' per se, as much as simply a clear answer about whether that error was even worth worrying about. I'm well aware that 1.0.7 is a pretty old release, and you don't have much control over what the distro maintainers choose to package. Generally speaking, I think there are advantages (not introducing incompatibility with other software, simple dependency resolution, automatic security updates, etc.) to sticking with repo versions, unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise. Hi all, I'm trying to link in my "online" community of users, via mysql, with my mailserver. I have dovecot 1.0.7. I am using mysql to authenticate, and I'm trying to figure out what I should be doing to my sql query that checks the username which has a username field and a database field. everything works, as long as the username is "u%@d%" in the field, but to work with my other web application, the username is in one field, and the database is in another. can anyone make a suggestion as to how i can do the user_query to work this way? Hi, I tried to get Sieve plugin running but I don't get it to work and actually have no idea what's wrong. This directory is owned by popuser and that user has rights for reading and writing to this directory (and read rights for .dovecot.sieve), therefore it should not be a rights problem. Hello! I am really need help! I am using dovecot installation on ~700 users with dspam integration via dovecot-antispam plugin. Problem in unpredictable result of moving spam-mails from INBOX to Junk and from Junk to INBOX. In some cases it works fine, but sometimes I see error like "It's not possible to move the message" in client (roundcube). Two different samples on same configuration/server. [Dovecot] Dovecot 2.0 auth socket error

Hi Timo, ok, when dovecot starts up, it creates the socket files in /usr/local/var/run/dovecot for the auth and a variety of other socket stuff you have going on. It creates these socket files with root ownership. But I have in the config files that dovecot is running as a particular user (in this case uid100 and gid100) to match the global mail systems needs. I use qmail as the delivery agent, and when qmail envokes deliver, I get the following errors in the qmail log files : @400000004c1b18f22ea7a05c delivery 1497: deferral: lda:_Error:_userdb_lookup:_connect(/usr/local/var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb)_failed:_Permission_denied_(euid=100(sn)_egid=100(sn)_missing_+w_perm:_/usr/local/var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb,_euid_is_not_dir_owner)/lda:_Fatal:_Internal_error_occurred._Refer_to_server_log_for_more_information./ Now, from what I can tell, this is complaining that the socket doesn't have write permission for the group, because it is owned by root and created with only 600 permissions...I can chmod the file to add the rw for the group, and then it appears to start working ok, but if I stop and start dovecot, it will only re-create those files with the 600 permissions... It appears that this is not happening in the version 1.2.11 code base as I this machine is a new one that I am testing 2.0 code on... Hi all, ok, I'm getting an error produced by the following sieve file : require ["fileinto","copy"]; # rule:[SPAM-TAG] if allof ( header :regex "Subject" "^\\[SPAM-TAG\\]") { fileinto "SPAM-TAG"; stop; } and I'm getting the following error in the dovecot delivery log : main_script: line 3: error: unknown tagged argument ':regex' for the header test (reported only once at first occurence). main_script: error: validation failed. But I looked up the syntax, and tried to figure out why this is getting the error. I guess I just don't quite know what this error means... I know that the value that it is trying to match is kind of strange, but it is a regular expression, so it should work... Thanks, Tim.

[Dovecot] Problem configuring rawlog with 2.0beta6

The initial problem I was seeing after upgrade from 2.0beta5 to 2.0beta6 was error messages from my Android phone K9 client that dovecot was reporting -1 messages in various mailboxes. These mailboxes do have the special "Mail System Internal Data" message in them. In trying to get more information for debugging, I tried toenable rawlog using the same configuration I used successfully with 2.0beta5, namely: service imap { executable = imap imap-postlogin } service imap-postlogin { executable = script rawlog unix_listener imap-postlogin { } } (full dovecot -n below), but instead of successful rawlog writes, I got the following log messages: Jun 16 19:46:36 sbh16 dovecot: script: Fatal: Client not compatible with this binary (connecting to wrong socket?) Now I'm uprading that same system to newer and more powerful hardware and I was wondering whether it is good idea or not to switch to Dovecot 1.2.x series. Hi List, I'm trying to make dovecot deliver messages to sam+extension(a)example.com to the imap folder 'extension' of the user 'sam'. Hi, I've some virtual folders which seem a bit odd when they are listed. a LIST "virtual.spam." "*" * LIST (\Noselect \HasNoChildren) "." "virtual.spam." * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." "virtual.spam.unchecked" * LIST (\Noselect \HasChildren) "." "virtual.spam.disagree" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." "virtual.spam.disagree.dspam" * LIST (\HasNoChildren) "." "virtual.spam.disagree.spamassassin" a OK List completed. This seems ok, virtual.spam and virtual.spam.disagree can't contain mails. I'm wondering if virtual.spam should have the flag \HasChildren instead if \HasNoChildren, but this doesn't cause trouble... a LIST (SUBSCRIBED) "virtual.spam." "*" * LIST (\Subscribed \Noselect) "." When I list the folder with (SUBSCRIBED), the virtual folders are all flagged with \Noselect. This appears at all virtual folders. All other folders don't have the \Noselect flag. Hello list, I'm implementing shared mailboxes on live system and after enabling acl plugin I got errors in my log: Jun 17 15:50:33 dict: Error: sql dict iterate: Invalid/unmapped path: shared/shared-boxes/anyone/ I have no clue why this happening, users don't know about new functionality they just use imap as before. Also dict database begin to fill up by records like: select * from user_shares; user@domain.com|admin@domain.com|1 But user don't use setacl command. Searching for the list gave http://www.dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2009-April/038664.html , but question seemed still open. So, can someone give point how to fix\avoid this ? One more question, on live system it's hard to debug dovecot with mail_debug=yes for all users, can this option be turn on for individual user? or maybe mail_debug stream can be redirected also for individual user ? I just downloaded 1.2.11 and compiled from source including mysql support and using default directory locations. I walked thru the included example conf file and tweaked it out and get an invalid configuration file. I trimmed out all of the commented sections to make the non-default config super easy to navigate during troubleshooting. Hello, I'm currently using dovecot 1.2.11 on FreeBSD 8.0 with ZFS filesystems. So far, so good, it works quite nicely, but I have a couple glitches. Each user has his own zfs partition, mounted on /home/<user> (easier to set per user quotas) and mail is stored in their home. From day one, when people check their mail via imap, a lot of indexes corruption occured : dovecot: IMAP(<user>@domain.org): Corrupted transaction log file /home/<user>/Mail/Maildir/INBOX/dovecot.index.log seq 13: record size too small +(type=0x0, offset=5560, size=0) (sync_offset=5652) dovecot: IMAP(<user>@domain.org): fscking index file /home/<user>/Mail/Maildir/INBOX/dovecot.index dovecot: IMAP(<user>@domain.org): /home/<user>/Mail/Maildir/INBOX/dovecot.index log position went backwards (13,132 < 13,5560) dovecot: IMAP(<user>@domain.org): Transaction log file /home/<user>/Mail/Maildir/INBOX/dovecot.index.log: marked corrupted etc, etc... After some digging, I "solved" this problem with mmap_disable = yes in dovecot.conf. Index corruption doesn't seem to occur anymore. Is this normal? I thought this problem occured only on NFS filesystem and eventually on old versions of ZFS. Hasn't this been fixed? Is there an option in ZFS that would allow mmap calls without corruption. Has it something to do with compression ? Is there anyone using Apple´s Mail.app to collect the mails via IMAP or IMAPS ? I found a funny bug in Debian Lennys Dovecot Version. (still v. 1.0.15) When I get my Mails via IMAP or IMAPS and define a Rule in Mail.app to move the eMail to s specific folder I will find the mail 2 times in the folder. After a minute or so the double Mail disappears. I have tried it with other programs like Thunderbird. There everything works, v1.0 too. In the old configuration we organized many mails (e.g. root-Stuff) in Public Folders. They structure had nearly 5 folderlevels. After the complete migration an syncronize we switch complete to the dovecot setup. At this moment we have problems with access to the Public Folders. (We use as Client the actualy Thunderbird3 ...) When i want subscribe Folders, i have no access to folder are deeper as second level! So if I want to run dovecot from tcpserver it seems like I can simply run `pop3-login --ssl` from tcpserver (its sort of like running it from inetd) and it says it will 'talk to dovecot'. Can I disable all listeners in dovecot then? Will is still talk to it? Trying some experiments now ... --Chuck

Apologies if this is in the archive - did look but couldn't find it. Does anyone have any experience of migrating from CommunigatePro to Dovecot? We currently run CGP 5.3.4, supporting a small system (20 or so users, one domain). We've been using it for years, and have a mixed bag of MailDir and mbox folders accessed via IMAP clients. Some users have large mail accounts (15GB total). We're looking to move as CGP is evolving into a complex "Messaging Centre" application (PBX, SIP, Mail, Groupware, Portals etc.) which we don't need / use. I had a look on the Dovecot Wiki and under migration are discussions about various other mail systems, but I don't know enough about these to tell if they would also apply to CGP. Hi all, I have emails with multiple Delivered-To: headers in them. The problem is that the SEARCH command only searches in the first instances. You can see the meesage with the id 14557 _has_ a "Delivered-To: szamlagyar(a)uhusystems.com" header field, but the SEARCH does not find it, only another message. This is with dovecot 1.2.11. For the record, cyrus-imapd behaves as I would have expected, and I could not find anything relevant in the RFCs. Could anyone tell me if this is a bug, or how to search like I would want? Hello, I'm trying to set up something fairly simple (famous last words) using Dovecot. I have a very small setup (just a dozen users) I'm using qmail as my MTA. I'm running FreeBSD 8.0 I've got qmail delivering into a file named 'Mailbox' in user's home directories. I prefer not to use Maildir delivery because from a shell its a PITA to get a Maildir aware MUA (I use /bin/mail when I'm attached locally) What I'm trying to do is configure an SSL only POP3 server so that folks can retrieve their email on the road without divulging their passwords. My backup scenario is to put VPN software on my user's clients and having them VPN into the network and then do un-encrypted POP3 from the VPN. I prefer not to do this as it means maintaining the VPN client as well. Users have a mix of MacOS, Windows, and Linux. So, I can't get dovecot to work at all. In an unusual turn about I got the SSL stuff working but not the mailbox handling. [Dovecot] Logout after SSL/TLS negociation

Hi All, I've set up Dovecot to use my signed SSL certificate and IMAP client is using STARTTLS on port 143 without secure authentication. The TLS negociation process seems to go through ok but once the negociation is finished the client sends an IMAP LOGOUT message; he does not try to authenticate, below is the Dovecot's info log: dovecot: 2010-06-15 15:37:01 Info: auth(default): new auth connection: pid=3932 dovecot: 2010-06-15 15:37:03 Info: imap-login: Aborted login (0 authentication attempts): rip=130.100.32.54, lip=10.0.3.3, TLS I've decrypted the TLS negociation thanks to Wireshark (in SSL preferences I added the certificate's private key to decode the stream between client and server) but unfortunately it does not say why the client is sending the LOGOUT command. Do you have an idea of what could be wrong in my server set up? What debugging process would you advise me to follow? Thanks a lot for your precious help. I am running dovecot 1.1.7 with postfix 2.6.5. Ihad a server down issue and when it rebooted the IPFW firewalll on my FReebsd server prevented mail from being delivered..at least thatis what I think the issue was... when i stopped IPFW .. mail resumed anyway I use vmail structure..and there are message in the cur directory.. how do i get them "reprocessed" or "released" I presume this are incoming

[Dovecot] A new director service in v2.0 for NFS installations

As http://wiki.dovecot.org/NFS describes, the main problem with NFS has always been caching problems. One NFS client changes two files, but another NFS client sees only one of the changes, which Dovecot then assumes is caused by corruption. The recommended solution has always been to redirect the same user to only a single server at the same time. User doesn't have to be permanently assigned there, but as long as a server has some of user's files cached, it should be the only server accessing the user's mailbox. Recently I was thinking about a way to make this possible with an SQL database: http://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2010-January/046112.html The company here in Italy didn't really like such idea, so I thought about making it more transparent and simpler to manage. The result is a new "director" service, which does basically the same thing, except without SQL database. The idea is that your load balancer can redirect connections to one or more Dovecot proxies, which internally then figure out where the user should go. So the proxies act kind of like a secondary load balancer layer. When a connection from a newly seen user arrives, it gets assigned to a mail server according to a function: host = vhosts[ md5(username) mod vhosts_count ] This way all of the proxies assign the same user to the same host without having to talk to each others. The vhosts[] is basically an array of hosts, except each host is initially listed there 100 times (vhost count=100). This vhost count can then be increased or decreased as necessary to change the host's load, probably automatically in future. The problem is then of course that if (v)hosts are added or removed, the above function will return a different host than was previously used for the same user. That's why there is also an in-memory database that keeps track of username -> (hostname, timestamp) mappings. Every new connection from user refreshes the timestamp. Also existing connections refresh the timestamp every n minutes. Once all connections are gone, the timestamp expires and the user is removed from database. The final problem then is how multiple proxies synchronize their state. The proxies connect to each others forming a connection ring. For example with 4 proxies the connections would go like A -> B -> C -> A. Each time a user is added/refreshed, a notification is sent to both directions in the ring (e.g. B sends to A and C), which in turn forward it until it reaches a server that has already seen it. This way if a proxy dies (or just hangs for a few seconds), the other proxies still get the changes without waiting for it to timeout. Host changes are replicated in the same way. It's possible that two connections from a user arrive to different proxies while (v)hosts are being added/removed. It's also possible that only one of the proxies has seen the host change. So the proxies could redirect users to different servers during that time. This can be prevented by doing a ring-wide sync, during which all proxies delay assigning hostnames to new users. This delay shouldn't be too bad because a) they should happen rarely, b) it should be over quickly, c) users already in database can still be redirected during the sync. The main complexity here comes from how to handle proxy server failures in different situations. Those are less interesting to describe and I haven't yet implemented all of it, so let's just assume that in future it all works perfectly. :) I was also thinking about writing a test program to simulate the director failures to make sure it all works. Finally, there are the doveadm commands that can be used to: 1) List the director status: # doveadm director status mail server ip vhosts users 11.22.3.44 100 1312 12.33.4.55 50 1424 1) Add a new mail server (defaults are in dovecot.conf): # doveadm director add 1.2.3.4 2) Change a mail server's vhost count to alter its connection count (also works during adding): # doveadm director add 1.2.3.4 50 3) Remove a mail server completely (because it's down): # doveadm director remove 1.2.3.4 If you want to slowly get users away from a specific server, you can assign its vhost count to 0 and wait for its user count to drop to zero. If the server is still working while "doveadm director remove" is called, new connections from the users in that server are going to other servers while the old ones are still being handled.

[Dovecot] Sieve doesn't appear to be active

I'm hoping that this isn't something stupid and that I'm not wasting bandwidth here, but I'm stuck and don't know any further ways of debugging this. And most non-documentation, end-user created info I find is for 1.0 with cmusieve. Running Dovecot 1.2.11 on Fedora Core 12. Added 'sieve' to 'mail_plugins'. Have enabled verbose logging with 'mail_debug = yes'. But I'm not seeing anything in the logs relating to sieve, and the sieve script I point to isn't being compiled (no .log file). Everything else works fine, this is a production system where I'm trying to add sieve support. What steps can I take to troubleshoot? [Dovecot] passwd-file management utility

I'm now putting together tools/documentation to manage/administer the mail server, including, of course, managing users. Round one will be command line tools. In order to avoid re-invention, I was looking around for existing tools. I really cannot find any. So it seems I will be developing them. The first will be the one to manage users in the passwd-file format. So I'm just asking around if anyone has heard of such tools somewhere Google isn't finding (it does find lots of generic pages with the keywords used in other contexts). If not, I'll be building my own (and this will be for passwd-file format for the userdb/passdb),

[Dovecot] Maildir + /var/mail

Hi, I have just switched to Maildir, and I have noticed something. Even though it works properly, I have noticed that a file named /var/mail/user with 0 bytes length is still created. Is this normal? I use sendmail+procmail+dovecot. I have also tried the combined procmail+deliver approach with the same results. I also use a global /etc/procmailrc. Thank you

Hi all, ok, I am updating to the 2.0 way of doing things and have managed to get everything set up right, except I am getting the following errors when attempting to use managesieve with our webmail client (roundcube) that I didnt get when using dovecot 1.2.11... Jun 14 17:20:33 managesieve(address(a)domain.com): Warning: sieve-storage: Active sieve script symlink /home/mailboxes/data/domain/348/address(a)domain.com/.dovecot.sieve is broken: invalid/unknown path to storage (points to Maildir/sieve/roundcube.sieve). I checked, and the link appears to be there, and is a proper symlink to the sieve file... Since upgrading from 2.0beta5 to beta6, I have seen a few pairs of log messages like the following: Jun 13 15:57:17 sbh16 dovecot: imap-login: Maximum number of connections from user+IP exceeded (mail_max_userip_connections=30): user=<gpc>, method=PLAIN, rip=76.126.100.210, lip=72.52.113.35, mpid=0, TLS Jun 13 15:57:17 sbh16 dovecot: master: Error: service(imap-login): child 16960 killed with signal 11 (core not dumped - add -D parameter to service executable The "Maximum number of connections from user+IP exceeded" message is not new - this is an issue with the K9 mail client on an android phone - but the killing of the child is new in beta 6.
