2.0.beta6 assert-fails for me when: - using mdbox (maildir is OK) - my authentication module returns the mail= and mail_location= attributes (relying on mail_location from 10-mail.conf is OK) - a user logs in for the first time and selects his nonexistent INBOX The error is: Panic: file mailbox-list.c: line 318 (mailbox_list_get_unexpanded_path): assertion failed: (*location == '0') The location string is "1mdbox:/Volumes/Mail/joe". [Dovecot] convert Plugin Error

I am getting an error when using the convert plugin for dovecot. Jun 14 13:27:20 mail dovecot: IMAP(user): Mailbox conversion: rename(/home/user/mail, /home/user/mail-converted) failed: Directory not empty Dovecot creates mail-converted, but does not delete mail completely for some reason. It continues to add a message from the mbox to Maildir format, creating duplicates every time I check my email. I can fix it by deleting mail-converted, but I don't want this to happen to other users on the system. Does anyone have a clue as to why it's doing this, and what I can do to fix it? [Dovecot] Ubuntu upgrade to 10.04 --> dovecot no longer working

Hi, Last year I installed dovecot on my Ubuntu V9 system 64 bit system. I use it to store emails from several clients in the LAN using IMAP. Last week I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. Now Dovecot is no longer working. It started with messages about sieve, so I disabled sieve in the configuration file (did not use it in the past, don't know what it is). Dovecot can now be started without errors or warnings, but I cannot connect in the client. I get a message saying "could not connect to server: connection refused". Hi All, I've pored over the wiki, read through the archive, and have what I believe should be a working set-up, but I can't seem to get my shared namespace to work correctly. Any guidance would be much appreciated. I started off using a flat file for acl_shared_dict and ran into the same problem recently reported with the shared-database file getting chown'd to the first user to touch it with 0600 permissions. So I thought I'd give it a whirl with sqlite. Here are the (hopefully) relevant bits from dovecot -n (the entire output is posted below). This is dovecot 1.2.9 running on a freshly installed ubuntu 10.4 server: namespace: type: shared separator: / prefix: shared/%%u/ location: maildir:/home/staff/%%n/Maildir:INDEX=~/Maildir/shared/%%u list: children plugin: acl_shared_dict: proxy::acl dict: acl: sqlite:/etc/dovecot/acl-shared-dict.conf acl-shared-dict.conf looks like this: connect = /home/staff/dovecot/acl-shared-ns.sqlite map { table = acl_shared_ns pattern = shared/shared-boxes/user/$to/$from value_field = has_visible_folders fields { from_user = $from to_user = $to } } /home/staff/dovecot/acl-shared-ns.sqlite is set 0666, and I can add records to it from the sqlite command line as a normal user. Hello, I am having this error message on some rare emails with more than 6 mb or so. Neither the dovecot server nor the filesystem where the maildir resides have any quota or are full at the time of delivering. The mails goes getmail->postfix->dovecot delivery agent Is the mail written to any other place than the maildir folder? Even though all my temp folders should also be able to hold some megabytes... Timo, thank you for the reply to my question about shared folders yesterday. I'm now trying to get quota reporting working consistently. This is with dovecot 1.2.11 in solaris 10 sparc. We have local quotas for the mail spool (/a1) and quotas for home directories. All are UFS and have rpc (rquota) working fine. With just this: protocol imap { mail_plugins = quota imap_quota } My mail client (thunderbird 3.0.4) reported the home directory quota. So then I added this: plugin { quota = fs:INBOX:mount=/a1 quota2 = fs:Home:mount=%h } First, I had to make /a1/quotas world readable, otherwise I'd get this error: open(/a1/quotas) failed: Permission denied I'm getting the same type of error with the quota2 line now: open(/nfs/rack/u4/quotas) failed: Permission denied Since the home directory quota worked without the plugin configuration, my guess is that the plugin config is not using rpc. I can't find any way to force it to use rpc. Again, if I make that 'quotas' file world readable (which I believe isn't good practice), dovecot stops complaining. Also, what should I expect to see on the client? Will dovecot report only one quota (the one that's closer to the limit), or will it report both? I've only seen the first quota in thunderbird, but that could easily be a client issue. thank you Tom Lieuallen Oregon State University

When my dovecot-2.0.beta5 auth module logs a 552-byte debug message, the message is split into two lines and also a null error message: Wed Jun 9 23:44:29 gromit dovecot[58892]: auth: Error: I think this has to do with the use of PIPE_BUF (512) sized buffers in the logging code, and the !line_is_ok() case in i_failure_parse_line(). Could you please remove the null error message? Just a nuisance, nothing serious. Thanks.

[Dovecot] lazy-expunge acl bug?

Hi, we've defined a public namespace "shared" and use the acl and lazy-expunge plugins among others. The problem is, that a mailbox is deleted by the DELETE-command without the x-flag to be set (# 1.2.9): a myrights shared/aclDeleteTest * MYRIGHTS "shared/aclDeleteTest" lrsed a OK Myrights completed. b delete shared/aclDeleteTest b OK Delete completed. c myrights shared/aclDeleteTest c NO Mailbox doesn't exist: aclDeleteTest This behavior should be different and the mailbox should not be deleted, should it? Is there a fast workaround? Without the e-flag, mailboxes can't be deleted. But as some users should be allowed to use the expunge operation, it's no option to remove the e-flag... thx Martin

[Dovecot] problems with shared mailboxes and other general issues

I'm also having beginner's troubles with shared mailboxes with dovecot 1.2.11. I've used the TestInstallation instructions for connecting to the imap port via openssl and issuing the setacl/getacl commands. Those appear to be fine. I'm having real difficulty with the acl_shared_dict configuration. I'd prefer to just use a flat file, as I don't anticipate using shared folders very frequently. I don't need a database and would greatly prefer not to have a dependency on our database service. So, with this setting: acl_shared_dict = file:/private/dovecot/var/etc/shared-mailboxes The '../var/etc' directory is something like 755. I have to create the file first and make it 666. When it is updated, ownership & permissions are changed such that the user giving acl permissions then owns the file and it's 600. I tried setting it back to 644 afterward, so other users could read it, but they tried setting a lock in that dir as well. I tried this: acl_shared_dict = file:/private/dovecot/var/etc/shared-list/shared-mailboxes-%u Then I made shared-list have '1777' permissions. Permissions-wise, this will now work, including locks, but I'm guessing this is just plain wrong and I still can't verify access. My second choice was to use sqlite for this acl_shared_dict, but, even though I compiled dovecot with sqlite support and 'ldd' shows that '../libexec/dict' is linked against sqlite libraries, when I tried this config: acl_shared_dict = sqlite:/private/dovecot/etc/acl-shared-dict.conf I get this, and dovecot fails to start up. EUnknown dict module: sqlite I question whether I can use sqlite for acl_shared_dict. Furthermore, in this vein, I don't really know what the shared namespace should even look like. I've been trying the imap commands LIST and MYRIGHTS to verify access, but there are simply no examples. I'd rather expect this to work: x myrights shared/fromuser/folder but all I get is mailbox doesn't exist. I know 'shared' is the namespace, but I just don't know how it should really be referred to. Personally, I can live without the acl_shared_dict (from what I understand). I don't need to see the shared path for subscription, I'd just manually add the folder path to the .subscriptions file for the handful of users that need it. I just don't think it's working, though. On a related note, I thought I'd increase debugging to see if that helped out any. When I change 'mail_debug' to 'yes', as soon as I issue the imap login command, it logs some stuff, then kicks me out. Hello I have been reading http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailLocation and http://wiki.dovecot.org/Variables and I do not fully understand the directory hashing feature. I want to migrate > 70.000 users from Sun Messaging to Dovecot using imapsync. I have fail2ban working for EVERYTHING else except dovecot. I have tried using my own custom regex in conjunction with the regex on the dovecot.org site. Neither are picked up by fail2ban and I'm trying to use an imminent attack agaist dovecot, going on now, to my advantage to see when I get the right regexp. [Dovecot] Evolution and Thunderbird do different things?

I'm trying both Evolution and Thunderbird on my IMAP server, and find that there are differences in how some things are done, between clients. Shouldn't there have been a standard way to do these things in the IMAP protocol? The first thing I noticed is that when deleting email from one client, it puts a "T" on the file name, leaving it where it is, and from the other client, it moves the mail to a ".Trash" directory on the server (and created a 2nd "Trash" folder ... so now I have 2 "Trash" folders, one with some deleted mail in it, and the other with some deleted mail in it). I'm not saying Dovecot has a problem here. But maybe IMAP the protocol does for not having a standard way to do things, and these clients, for not doing it the same way (if there is some standard somewhere). Any IMAP experts here know what the story is with this?

Hi people, first message to this list. I've a problem with dovecot 1.0.15 (debian latest package) and an LDAP query. The situation is the following. My LDAP users have multiple mail addresses (field 'mail') and mail should be able to be sent to any of these and the mail should always end on the user's mailbox. This is not working for me now. My dovecot-ldap.conf relevant config shows: user-attrs = uid=user user_filter = (&(objectClass=posixAccount)(|(uid=%n)(mail=%u))) This correctly detects multiple addresses but mail always end in folder (from dovecot.conf): mail_location = maildir:/home/vmail/%n/Maildir So if user@domain gets a mail it ends in /home/vmail/user/Maildir but if the same user gets an email to user-alt@domain it ends in /home/vmail/user-alt/Maildir instead of /home/vmail/user/Maildir. [Dovecot] converting from vm-pop3d

Hello All. I am looking into an old server which is running vm-pop3d. This server is having problems because the pop3 server is taking up 100% of the CPU. I looked at the largest mailboxes and there are a handful over 20 megs in size, the largest one is 55megs, they are all mbox format (I think). I have been looking at the wiki and it looks like there is a perl script to make the mailboxes behave. There are also other scripts that try and convert mbox to maildir formats and from what I can gather dovecot can do this as well. Finally the dovecot in the fedora repos is 1.0.X and I notice that the latest in 1.2.X is there a more up to date dovecot RPM repo? I would appreciate any advice anybody can give me on how to proceed with this transition. Thank you in advance.

I have $conf['storage']['params']['driverconfig'] = 'horde'; $conf['storage']['driver'] = 'sql'; in /var/www/html/horde/ingo/config/conf.php I have 2,146 records for one of the users in ingo_lists table of horde DB. The size of the script (.dovecot.sieve file) is 99.965 bytes. When trying to activate script I get the following # Changes saved. # Error There was an error activating the script. Hello, we are planning to migrate from Courier to Dovecot. We already know courier-dovecot-migrate.pl, that will convert UID list and subscriptions files to dovecot format, and we will run it in batch on all Maildir + enable it at login, once we do the switch But we are also wondering it it might be wise to "force" the creation of dovecot.index{,.cache} files at conversion-time. It seems that, at least, d.i.c is created at FETCH of a mail, i.e. reading it, but we do not want to "alter" mails status of our clients. Is there a way to create them in batch, or is it better to just let them be created once clients start accessing their mailboxes via dovecot? Thanks in advance, Sandro

[Dovecot] Problem after migrating from mbox to maildir and squirrelmail

Hi all, I just finished migrating from mbox to maildir (and upgrade squirrelmail to the latest version) with some issue. We are using Postfix 2.3, Dovecot 1.2.7 and Squirrelmail 1.4.2. One of user report that suddenly all his Sent and Drafts emails were disapeared. After log in to webmail, I found out that there are 3 new folder called Drafts, Sent and Trash apart from Drafts,Sent,Trash underneath INBOX folder, and all his sent and draft emails were there. I thought I just move the email from Sent folder to the Sent underneath INBOX, but I was wrong. Now he got all sent emails in Sent items but after refreshed the webmail, INBOX wont open at all. it just blank but in the left side it said the amount of his email. what did i do wrong? is it something to do with the dovecot.index and index.cache or the uidlist? please enlighten me.... thank you Hendry

So after some problems with NFS and transaction logs getting corrupted. Im tyring out storing them localy. via.. mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/var/dovecot/indexes/%u the problem is with a large amount of users.. the indexes dir becomes huge with this setup. So a change to make this better is... mail_location: maildir:~/Maildir:INDEX=/var/dovecot/indexes/%d/%n to seperate the users dir's into domains. What seems to happen is dovecot creates the index's folder automaticly and its owned by that user.. eg.. drwx------ 3 10651674 2598184 4096 2010-06-02 19:08 domain.com this makes it so no other user of domain.com can get their transaction logs created cause the dir is owned by another user at that domain. Is there anyway around this? I see there used to be a umask option but that is gone in 1.2.x. -- Jordan Tardif DreamHost

Hello. We are planning a migration from Sun One Messaging Server to Dovecot+Postfix+Ldap. We are using Dovecot 1.2.11 with Sun One Directory Server 5.2 ldap (we will migrate to Directory Server 6.3.1) soon. In our University we have 65.000 students, 5.500 staff and 6.500 teachers. Our main ldap realm is dc=us,dc=es (us means University of Seville, Spain). We have two e-mail domains, @us.es (staff+teachers) and @alum.us.es (students). We use Sun One Directory Server to load data to our ldap from several sources (like Oracle databases, flat files, etc) Our ldap tree is like this: dc=us,dc=es | |----->ou=People,dc=us,dc=es // "special" users only used by apps | | |----->o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es // ldap branch for staff+teachers | | |----->o=alum.us.es,dc=us,dc=es // ldap branch for students A user id is unique, so there is only a "john_doe" in the ldap tree (I repeat, there is NOT uid=john_doe,o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es and uid=john_doe,o=alum.us.es,dc=us,dc=es). Below you will find a copy of the dovecot.conf and dovecot-ldap.conf. Our operating system is Red Hat Enteprise Linux 5 x64. These are our questions: 1) We are unable to make dbox work with quota, but we have no problem with maildir. Quota is stored in a ldap attibute called "mailQuota" 2) A user can be in different branches in the same time: for example, a teacher called pepito should be in the uid=pepito,o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es branch but if that teacher is also a student should have another ldap entry uid=pepitosurname,o=us.es,dc=us,dc=es. Our identity management is the piece of software that "promotes" a user in that case. How should we use "mail_location" to addres this? 3) We are planning to use two raid5 of 8 SAS 15.000 rpm disks for these mailboxes. We will use a "2.0, ajax-based webmail" like roundcube. Most of our users will use webmail (imap based). How many iops should we have in that enviroment? We would like to use dbox, but we are stuck in maildir because 1) 4) Some users could have their mailboxes "disabled". We use the following line: user_filter = (&(objectClass=inetorgperson)(uid=%n)(mailUserStatus=active)) but it does NOT work as expected. Any idea) 5) We are planning to use bacula to backup user mailboxes. Any known problem with this (i will ask in the bacula mailing list anyway) 6) I have read carefully perfomance in dovecot wiki. Can I use noatime in /etc/fstab safely with dovecot? Any perfomance hint apart from we already have in our config files? 7) When we set vacation messages they work but we see this error in the log: dovecot: deliver(jorgelp): file_dotlock_create(~/.dovecot.lda-dupes) failed: No such file or directory 8) When a user log in she uses his username "mary" (without @us.es or @alum.us.es) . Our dovecot search in all the ldap tree until it finds that uid. But we would like to store in our mail_location /buzones/us.es or /buzones/alum.us.es. How can we accomplish this? [Dovecot] mangled user_attrs from LDAP

I have setup dovecot to allow users to login using their email address or uid and have found a strange behaviour when the user logs in using the email address for a "username". I am using OpenLDAP for a backend data store with a rather customized schema. This behaviour occurs for both POP3 and IMAP logins. For some users it works as expected, but for others the pass_attrs->user does not get mapped back to the uid, but remains the mailLocalAddress (dovecot-ldap.conf is attached at the end of this post). Here is an excerpt from the logs for a working and a malfunctioning user. This behaviour has been found with both OpenLDAP: slapd 2.3.39 and OpenLDAP: slapd 2.4.17, and is consistent with standard LDAP behaviour (ie, there is no guaranteed ordering in the LDAP database). A brief look at the code, seems to indicate that the values are being pulled from the LDAP return struct in a step-wise manner, which could certainly put them out of sync with the request if it is assumed that they will always be returned in the same order....This is just based on a quick review of the code though, and not any detailed tracing. Is it possible to configure dovecot in a manner that only the imap process respects the quota, and the local delivery ignores completely the quota? I think it should happen if I don't activate the quota plugin in the lda section but only in the imap section. protocol lda { ... # mail_plugins = ... } protocol imap { ... mail_plugins = quota imap_quota ... } Will it work or will it result in a big mess? I've the aim that a mail will never be rejected because the recipient is over his/her quota. Regards, Holger

We have frequent timeout problems after upgrading our imap servers from dovecot 1.1.16 to dovecot 1.2.11. One server acts as proxy only, and the other one is the "real" imap server". The credentials for the proxy service are stored in a remote MYSQL database. There were no trouble with dovecot 1.1.16. But now, with the most recent version, we get frequent login failures. It seems dovecot reconnects too late to the MySQL database after a timeout, after sending the SQL query. [Dovecot] DOES NOT PERTAIN TO DOVECOT: Does anyone use postfix for some help?

When mail is sent from the mail server, it shows up as originating from the MAIN ip address of the server, 173.50.101.11, when the mail server is bound to 173.50.101.12. I have already set smtp_bind_address: 173.50.101.12 in main.cf and 173.50.101.12:smtp inet - - smtpd in master.cf. This prevents smtp connects TO any other ip but 173.50.101.12 BUT mail STILL shows up originating from eth1, where 173.50.101.12 is eth1:2 I think this is *nix related and most here, on dovecot mailing list, could provide help.

There appear to be two issues here: the uidvalidity mismatch, and the path in the "rebuilding indexes" message does not match the path in the "uidvalidity mismatch" error.

Hello, I've got dovecot 1.2.11 running on Fedora 12 (x86_64) with the managesieve protocol and sieve plugins enabled, with deliver handling local delivery. I've set disable_plaintext_auth = yes ssl = yes ssl_cert_file = /etc/pki/dovecot/certs/dovecot.pem ssl_key_file = /etc/pki/dovecot/private/dovecot.pem mail_debug = yes protocol managesieve { listen = *:2000 login_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve-login mail_executable = /usr/libexec/dovecot/managesieve } and generated local SSL certificates; everything is going fine on the IMAP end of things (clients ask if I trust the certificate the first time, etc). I've open the appropriate ports, etc. No problems with mail delivery. However, I can't connect to the managesieve daemon. I've tried the Emacs client[1], and it just hangs. I tried manual login to port 2000 and here's what happened: joel@chondestes: /etc/mail > gnutls-cli --starttls -p 2000 localhost Resolving 'localhost'... Hello, While testing mailbox conversion I encountered a Panic in dsync on a few users mailboxes. Running dovecot 2.0.beta4 on RedHat Enterprise Linux 5 (x86_64). I tried to compile the code with -ggdb and debug some more before posting this, but I was unsuccessful. Running dsync from a source tree is hard because of all the dependencies on shares libraries. When Dovecot is in proxy mode, the client sends along the original connection endpoints in an ID command. Is there any chance 'doveadm who' could use this to display the original connection source? As it currently stands, all I see is a bunch of connections from the proxy.
