Dear All, I use postfix and dovecot (1.1.11) combo with maildir format. I would have a question about dovecot config. Can I confiugre dovecot to download mails from IMAP folders via POP3? Now, mails can be downloaded only from .INBOX. [Dovecot] Overly long email of miscellaneous Dovecot migration questions

Hello to the list! I've been asked to spec out the feasibility and, if feasible, plan a migration from Courier to Dovecot for both POP3 and IMAP for about 4 million mailboxes. I've been trying to absorb all the dovecot-related info I could over the past couple of weeks from the docs and from the list and I'm sure that I've muddled at least some of it, so apologies in advance if I make grossly incorrect assumptions. BTW, sorry for the giant email but I've got a bunch of questions. This is the sort of overly wordy email that makes my eyes glaze over in mailing lists. But I've got things configured to where (I think) everything will 'just work' if we migrate (barring running POP3 mailbox conversions), so I'm not looking for configuration help, just gotchas and assumption-checking mostly. Me breaking 4 million mailboxes isn't really a good move for my job security ;) * Since Dovecot 2.0 seems like it's just around the corner, that's all I've been testing, and indeed all I've even looked at. * This is a pretty fantastic piece of software. I love the neat little details that make admins' lives easier, e.g. how easy it is to use multiple SSL certs in the same server. That made me smile. I hadn't looked at dovecot in a number of years, so I was really impressed at the full feature set. It's been a while since I've played with a new server application that I've enjoyed this much. * Background: All of our mail is stored on NFS and will be for the foreseeable future, all in maildir format. Courier POP3/IMAP runs on load balanced Linux servers, so clients will be hitting multiple servers, though stickiness based on client IP address is currently done. Webmail as well is done on top of a local Courier IMAP server accessing the same NFS servers but on an entirely different pool of servers. All authentication is done against SQL. Courier has been very, very good to us over the past 9 years, but our NFS servers (12 Netapps) are unfortunately being beaten to death. We've got lots of users with thousands of emails in their inbox (i.e. in ./Maildir/cur/ alone) and I've seen plenty of mailboxes with 10's of thousands in their inbox and I've even seen some really scary ones approaching 100k emails just in cur/. Thanks to an endless cycle of industry raising mailbox limits, we actually have to support this (though not so much the 100k message ones, at least). * Our #1 main motivation for looking Dovecot is relief for our currently overtaxed NFS servers, mostly in the form of the index files. Benchmarking dovecot looks great, even with the index files in the maildir. I know the cool thing to do would be to move the index files to a separate NFS server running entirely on SSDs for the fastest accesses possible. Building a separate index NFS cluster obviously adds complexity and performance with the index files in the maildir seems pretty great already. But I also know that real life often makes assumptions made during benchmarks look very foolish. My inclination is to try things out with the indexes in the maildir directory (and then start looking at moving to a dedicated NFS server for the indexes in a subsequent phase) but I don't want to regret that choice later. Anybody with large-scale NFS maildir stores have any advice either way? * Exim: We currently deliver all of our mail via Exim on separate servers. Our POP3/IMAP servers only do POP3/IMAP and the Exim mail servers delivering to maildirs only do Exim. From what I've seen in the docs and various threads, from what I can gather, the best thing to do in that case would be to use Exim's built-in maildir handling, instead of using 'deliver'. That would be my preference anyway, but I wanted to make sure I didn't misinterpret things. * Any problems running Courier POP3 and Dovecot IMAP for a while, possibly Courier IMAP and Dovecot IMAP concurrently?: Since migrating POP mailboxes is going to be a mighty task, our gameplan would probably be to start migrating *just* IMAP services at first and likely on just a few servers at a time. Being load balanced, there are several scenarios where a user could theoretically access a mailbox on different servers and therefore end up hitting dovecot at one point in time and then later hitting courier or vice versa. Or they could use IMAP from one location and POP3 (during the span of time before we migrated our POP3 services) from another. I've not yet seen any side effects from switching mail servers like that (though I'm aware of what would happen if both dovecot and courier *POP3* were in service at the same time -- redownloaded mail, bleh). Has anyone seen otherwise? I'm not worried as much by the 0.1% of IMAP users who might be using advanced features but rather the other 99.9% who are using it pretty vanilla-ishly. * Union mailboxes: I'm pretty sure in a fairly recent thread that Timo said that something like a 'union' mailbox (at least with maildir) wasn't possible. I tried messing with multiple 'private' namespaces (i.e. a namespace called "ARCHIVE" with a "location" different than the INBOX location, ideally placed on slower but denser NFS servers) but even with 'hidden=no' and 'list=yes', only the main INBOX folders would show up, so I'm guessing that's not going to work. That would be a killer feature, to be able to serve an alternate namespace that would show up in a mail client's subscribable list that could be on slower storage than the main inbox (though I'm not sure a mail client can even handle multiple namespaces). * Any problems with keeping only quota limits in db and not current quota numbers? Our limits come out of a SQL table but the current counts just live in the maildir file. Trying to update quota counts in SQL for 4 million mailboxes is a non-starter for us at this point. >From what I've done, dovecot seems pretty happy to maintain the quota using the 'maildir' quota plugin but let it be overridden by the userdb lookup. So I think I'm fine on that count, but I'd love to hear from anyone knowing of extreme gotchas doing it that way. * Any problem with leaving the namespace in "Courier compatibility" mode? I.e. in namespace 'private', leaving "prefix = INBOX.". With 4 million mailboxes, FAQs all over the place, and support reps trained in a particular way of doing things in IMAP, it'd be hellish to try to change the prefix (I know I could leave the courier namespace around with 'hidden=yes' but retraining support staff is perhaps better left to phase #2). Do I lose anything besides tidiness by not changing it to "prefix =" as if I was deploying dovecot from scratch? Does it hurt performance in any significant way? Benchmarking doesn't look any different, so I'm guessing not. * One thing that threw me and might be good for a FAQ (unless it was just me misconfiguring things) was when I started playing with putting the index files in an alternate location. I was utterly perplexed why it'd create the directories for the indexes but they'd be empty. Based on their location and names when they're in the maildir, I was just looking for the same dovecot.index* files right in the alternate directory. It wasn't till I started strace'ing that I noticed that the index files were indeed getting created but in a subdirectory called .INBOX (and with me just doing 'ls'). * The courier-dovecot-migrate.pl does a fine job at converting our POP3 mailboxes. We'll definitely be doing a mass run of it across all of our mailboxes. But with this many mailboxes, there's no way to get around the time lag between the script getting run and new mail showing up. Which means that there'll be some number of new messages that will re-download in POP3 when the switchover to Dovecot POP3 is done. To keep from getting too many complaints from customers, I'm thinking that I might have to write a wrapper script to do something like compare the mtime of ./Maildir/new/ against dovecot-uidlist and overwrite if ./Maildir/new/ is newer or perhaps see if the mtime of courierpop3dsizelist is newer than dovecot-uidlist and only if that's the case execute the conversion script with --overwrite. Considering we get between 500-2000 POP3 logins/sec, running any script after a POP3 login terrifies me--even a 6 line bash script. Anybody have any opinions to share on that? With a pooled architecture, it's near impossible to only have some mailboxes hit Courier and some hit Dovecot and keep slowly incrementing. At best my available units of increments to migrate are a few thousand at a time and more realistically 10-20k at a time. If we're going to have to live with users complaining about a one-time redownload of just post-conversion mail, I'll need to get started convincing the higher-ups that that's life. Hello, bug or feature? I'm using Dovecot 1.2.11. And because of a migration projekt I'm tempted to use the listescape plugin. If I understood well, it plugin { escape_char = "%" } should change the escape character to %. But it doesnt. Bug or feature? But more important: # sieve fileinto "a.b"; does not work as expected - the folder is visible as "a.b" in a normal imap client - because of the listescape plugin. # sieve fileinto "a\\2eb"; works. But the user won't understand this. Any ideas? [Dovecot] mdbox: Is there any more info on the "cleanup" step? (Dovecot 2.0beta5)

The wiki page which mentions mdbox talks about a "cleanup" step for mdbox: : The space is later freed in "cleanup" step. This may be done : automatically within the session or later in a nightly cronjob when : there's less disk I/O. The cleanup first finds all files that have : refcount=0 mails. Then it goes through each file and copies the : refcount>0 mails to other dbox files (to the same files as where newly : saved messages would also go), updates the map index and finally : deletes the original file. So there is never any overwriting or file : truncation. I was wondering if there was any code to actually do this, or any command-line tools (and if either of those where they might be), or whether it was just design musings at the minute. Regards, Bill

[Dovecot] mdbox: What format is the file "storage/dovecot.map.index" in? (Dovecot 2.0beta5)

I am looking at "mdbox" under Dovecot 2.0beta5. Looking at the documentation for "mdbox" I saw that we had a directory "storage" containing files "m.#" where "#" is an integer and a map file ("dovecot.map.index"). I think I expected the map file to be a plain text file with one record per line, but in fact it appears to contain binary data. According to the wiki ( http://wiki.dovecot.org/MailboxFormat/dbox ) the records go as: - map_uid: Unique growing 32 bit number for the message. - refcount: 16 bit reference counter for this message. Each time the message is copied the refcount is increased. - file_id: File number containing the message. For example if file_id=5, the message is in file m.5. - offset: Offset to message within the file. - size: Space used by the message in the file, including all metadata. The map file I have here is 1688 bytes in size (and I think there are 64 messages stored). Prime factors of 1688 are 2^3 x 211, so I think it is something other than just a straight array of fixed-size structures. Still, I can always look at the source if I really want to know :-) Regards, Bill

[Dovecot] newbie question about shared folders

I'm preparing to move our site to dovecot 1.2.11 and have a question about shared folders. We're currently using UW imap's mbx mailboxes for shared folders. We accomplish the sharing by use of file system permissions and ACLs. I notice that dovecot's method of sharing is more based on IMAP ACLs and apparently file system permissions are useful, but not necessary. On the main dovecot page, it says: "Dovecot allows mailboxes and their indexes to be modified by multiple computers at the same time..." So, my question is whether I need to use the dovecot imap sharing namespace in order to safely share imap folders, or whether I can just use file system permissions as we have been using? My biggest concern is safe concurrent access to the shared folders, which I'm planning to implent with mbox files for now. thank you Tom Lieuallen Oregon State University College of Engineering

I built and install Dovecot 2.0Beta4 on my NetBSD/amd64-current system, and am seeing the user-owned imap processes busy-looping. In Dovecot 1.2.x (and 1.x and 0.x..) I force ionotify and ioloop to kqueue, so I suspected that was the problem. Turns out it's not: Using poll or none also causes the same problem. This did not happen in 1.2.8 (didn't try anything later than that). After a quick visit to gdb, I added some i_debug() statements in ioloop-kqueue.c (when I had that as the notify and loop method) which showed that the loop was in io_loop_handler_run() . I haven't done any similar debugging for the other ioloop methods, but a quick look at the 2.0 changelog for those files doesn't raise any immediate alarms. Any ideas what to look for here? Hello, I may have missed a point, but I could have found an issue between plugins quota and lazy_expunge. I have noticed that the "lazy_expunge"d mails are counted as part of the quota, while the documentation says it should not be. I have first tried to find out if this was a configuration mistake somewhere. Notably, you can notice that the expunged mails are in directory ~/expunged while the usual mail is in ~/Maildir : expunged mails are not in a subdirectory of ~/Maildir (this was just to make sure there were no side effect with this). I have deleted some expunged mails to be sure : at its next cycle, the file ~/Maildir/maildirsize contained expected value. So yes, I do know expunged mails in the expunged directory are counted (size, number of mails). So I've taken a look at the source code, adding some i_info(...) at different places of the quota and lazy_expunge plugins. >From the source code reading session, I understand that : 1. In src/lazy-expunge/lazy-expunge-plugin.c 1.1. lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() sets the expunged mails namespace flag with NAMESPACE_FLAG_NOQUOTA 1.2. lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() is called by lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() 1.3. lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() is part of the callback list hook_mail_storage_create 2. In src/plugins/quota/quota-storage.c: 2.1. The only place in the whole dovecot source code where NAMESPACE_FLAG_NOQUOTA is checked is in function quota_mailbox_list_created() 3. In src/plugins/quota/quota-plugin.c: 3.1 quota_plugin_init() add quota_mailbox_list_created() to the callback list hook_mailbox_list_created. >From my observations : - Callback functions in quota_mailbox_list_created are called _before_ callback functions in hook_mail_storage_create. - This observation led me to move the piece of code that sets NAMESPACE_FLAG_NOQUOTA from lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() to lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created(). - But there, lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() is called after quota_mail_storage_created() because names of the library files are lib10_quota_plugin.so and lib02_lazy_expunge_plugin.so. - There I have also learnt that callback functions of the same list are called in the reverse order compared to the library filenames. So see if my observations were right, I have renamed lib10_quota_plugin.so to lib01_quota_plugin.so, then it worked. But I doubt this is the right way to fix it. This also reverses the order other callbacks between the two plugins are called, which migh not be expected at all. I'm not event sure moving some code from lazy_expunge_mail_storage_init() to lazy_expunge_mail_storage_created() was right : I've improvized the reading the source code and do not understand the whole logic, so I suppose this could break something else. Hi Timo... I made the plugin like you say. The header part is saved by dovecot, with o_stream_send , and the body with my function. This implementation, works fine. But i need to get / change some values to create the "link" from header to body. When a email is saved, have the S an W flags, that is the size of email. There is a way to increase this Flags ? I need to put one more line in the header, to have some link to body. To Increase the S Flag i increase the ostream.offset, but the W is based in the offset from istream, that's right ? There is a way to do this without rewrite the read function !? Exemple, when the email is moved from tmp to cur.

Hello. I need to know how I can get the final message file name inside a plugin like the zlib 2.0 plugin. I saw another threads about zlib plugin, but don't see no one asking about this. My interest is to use the message's file name in a specific function that will add some lines on it and, after that, calculate a md5 hash of the modified file. As the size flags will not correspond to the effective message size/vsize, then I could change the flags using the filename too, right? This is my first approach. But... There are another way to do this directly on message been received by the plugin, like pre-allocating the size/vsize flags? I cannot simply to pass the extra text directly on the message being received because I need to do some extra validations over the full content of the message before add my data on the message. [Dovecot] corrupted transaction log errors causing users mail to disappear temporarily

So Ive been looking into some problems with users reporting their mail goes missing for a second but then re-apears very soon after. I have tracked it down to happening at the same time these appear in the logs. Seems the transaction logs is getting corrupted somehow and then rebuilding itself (which works fine). The problem is while its re-builing the users think all of their mail is gone. Hi, I have a mail server (postfix/dovecot) running so far with normal local /etc/passwd users for domain example.com. mail_location = maildir:~/Maildir passdb pam { } userdb passwd { } Is it possible to add virtual domains/users to my setup without changing example.com to a virtual domain? I can do the postfix part with http://www.postfix.org/VIRTUAL_README.html#virtual_mailbox but I'm not sure if I can mix dovecot (IMAP and maybe smtp auth) for both local and virtual users. Any hint would be appreciated. best regards, Giannis

I Made some tests in zlib plugin, and in ostream file (ostream-zlib.c) in o_stream_zlib_sendv function, have it: stream->ostream.offset += bytes; In struct mail_save_context, have saved_physical_size and it can be updated, acording with the observation. /* if non-zero, overrides the physical size that should be saved. for example when using zlib plugin, this would contain the mail's uncompressed size. */ uoff_t saved_physical_size; in file zlib-plugin.c in zlib_mail_save_compress_finish function, have it: ctx->saved_physical_size = ctx->output->offset; It's a update to offset (the size of email) in zlib, but if you update this value with a new number, the W flag in email is NOT updated. OK, this not matter in zlib plugin, because the physical size is the email uncompressed, but if you use the zlib as example, and you use this value (saved_physical_size) to update your saved email size, it can't update the W flag, and the email will not be open, because the W size is wrong.

I'm looking at the possibility of using shared folders to solve a particular problem for my employer and I have a few questions: 1) Can shared folders be in mbox format while allowing the user's mail to be in maildir format? (I think the answer is yes, but wanted to check). 2) What version of dovecot should I be running in order to support shared folders? 3) Is there a good overview document that people could recommend I read that describes how best to set up shared folders under dovecot (and perhaps also gives an overview of shared folder usage in IMAP mail clients in general)? I believe I have the configuration set to use START TLS on IMAP4 (143) and POP3 (110) ports. However, it does not seem to be working. Yet "STARTTLS" is listed as a capability (which tells me I probably do have it configured right). In the session below, 172.30.0.24 is the mail server I'm putting up. 64.26.60.229 is an outside mail service. A similar thing happens on POP3. The always-SSL/TLS ports (993 and 995) are working. Hi all, ok, I couldn't quite find this in any of the documentation, so I figured I would ask here. In preparation to move to version 2.0 to take advantage of the mutiple IP and SSL cert options that are coming, it would be really nice to be able to include other config files in the main config file, so that I don't have to edit the main config in order to add new IP addresses or certs... Does dovecot currently have the ability to include another config file when it is parsing the main config??? If not, is that something that we can put on the wish list? Thanks, Tim.

I have quota with userdb sql override. When i overpass 100M deliver reject the message. I have 200M in sql. Deliver don't query the database. Hi i tested acls with some clients horde/imp mulberry thunderbird squirrelmail kmail and i couldnt get it run proberly i have no problems testing setacl etc with plain telnet session, and i have no error in verbose logging but it looks like acl is only working partly with some clients so show acls is working mostly but setting only partly horde/imp and mulberry dont show any acls any idea? -- Best Regards MfG Robert Schetterer Germany/Munich/Bavaria

What would cause these problems? What is the W value and how could I check it? Hi All! Just noticed a strange behavior of the FS quota plugin on delivery stage. We use group FS quotas via NFS. The first delivery is without error, but the INBOX is corrupted(last msg is clipped) but quota-tool show only 3300 blocks used (quota is 10240 blocks). - 2. Following delivery big msgs (over quoted) ends with an error: "Not enough disk space" (this is correct, because the quota is really ended) - 3. Following delivery small msgs (above quoted) ends well, msgs are delivered (used 3304 blocks and etc.) Our setup: -- slackware 11.0, x86_32 -- linux 2.6.31.6 -- dovecot 1.2.11 -- mailbox(not maildir) via NFS storage. hi, i red several hours a lot of documentation (wiki, Blogs, lists ...) how to get public folders. Under cyrus it is very easy. Create a mbox on the top with cyradm and some acls. Nothing more ... All i want is: public/info public/group/internal public/foo public/foo/bla on info, everybody can read on group/internal - only group has full access to internal public/foo/bla - read write for everyone The flags (seen, ...) is stored for all. I'd like to have a variable substitute take the domain name part, lower case it, MD5 it, and take a 2-character substring of that. Would that be like %2MLd ? The documentation on the H hash modifier described reversing with R, but expresses it at %3RHu which seems to me like it would be reversing the hash result rather than the user string. I'm undecided about MD5 vs. hash, and could go either way. But I was thinking: mail_location = /data/mail/%2MLd/%Ld/%2MLn/%Ln

Hi I'am using dovecot with quota_rule stored in mysql user table, and quota usage stored in mysql dict ###### Quota ############# dict { quotadict = mysql:/usr/local/etc/dovecot-quota.conf } plugin { quota = dict:user::proxy::quotadict quota_rule2 = Trash:storage=10%% quota_rule3 = Sent:ignore #quota_rule = *:storage=10M } ################################### Everything works as expected, but I have some inconveniences for domains with large number of mailboxes. Allocating and maintain quota to every account it's a hard job. I just want to implement some flexibility for this situations (ex the first enforcement to be the user quota and the second to be the domain quota). Is there a way to implement such thing in dovecot and what are the adjustments that I need to do. Regards Alex

I had hoped that this beta5 would be almost the same as RC1, but I didn't have time to put everything there yet, and thought beta4 is way too old already. The few things that should still be done: - Change expire-tool to be a plugin for doveadm expunge command - doveadm mailbox * commands should use UTF-8 for mailbox names, not mUTF-7 (and add -7, -8 parameters to switch between them) - THREAD command seems to be crashing - some other bugfixes Some of the changes since beta4: - default_login_user is now "dovenull". You should create this user. - imap, pop3 -u <user> now does userdb lookup + changes privileges if necessary, so it's much easier to start imap/pop3 session for a specific user from command line - doveadm has all kinds of new commands and changes - PostgreSQL supports now multiple connections to backend. Also supports load-balancing / HA by specifying multiple host parameters. MySQL and PostgreSQL now share the same code for that. - probably lots of other things I can't think of right now. h

I use dovecot, vpopmail. I wish to restrict a mail user's login to its mailbox according to its ip address. I don't wish other users to be affected . Namely, for instance, abc(a)domain.com can login to its mailbox from a few specific ip addresses but the same user will not able to login from anywhere. Meanwhile normally other mail users can login to their mailboxes from all ip addresses. How can I do that with dovecot acl ? any advice.

hello, dovecot2 implements "!include conf.d/*.conf" to build the configuration from multiple configfiles. So the settings for pop3, imap or lmtp may stay in different files. unfortunately the "protocol = " does not allow a += logic to enables or disable inet listeners. I would not have expected this upon implementing sieve. And I really need to get around this limitation. LDA has no problem writing to these large mbox files. Why does sieve have a problem with them? [Dovecot] List shared folders

Good morning! I run an imap-only Ubuntu 8.04 mail server with dovecot 1.2 and pam_ldap, so all my users are posix users. No virtual user or domain, no sql so far. I am setting up shared folders with "namespace shared". I got no errors upon restarting the service, but I get no shared folders listing. As per the wiki http://wiki.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Shared I can use a bdb file or sql connection to keep the listing. But when I use a single bdb file like: plugin { acl_shared_dict = file:/var/lib/dovecot/shared-mailboxes.db } everytime a user logs in, this file get its ownership to the user with 0600 mode. I could use an sql dictionary, but since I dont have any sql params on my configs I am not sure where to store connection params like user, password and host for database. Can anybody help me with that? My goal is to allow my users to shared selected folders with other users, hope to be in the right path. Thanks and regards. -- Marcio Merlone

Hi guys, I just suscribed cause I'm trying to do something which I'm not sure how. I need to prevent some accounts from deleting there emails. >From what I've seen [0] this could be achieved by using ACL. My first question is, is this right? Is there a way to achieve the same using POP3? I tried setting up ACL using the info at the Wiki [1], but it's not working. Hi, After many hours of testing, I've finally tracked down the issue I have been having with dovecot's SSL support. The problem is that the SSL certs result in "TLS handshaking: SSL_accept() syscall failed: Connection reset by peer" errors *if the certificate granted is not granted for client use*. For servers, I normally generate SSL certificates specifically for servers: [ server_ca_extensions ] basicConstraints = CA:false keyUsage = keyEncipherment extendedKeyUsage = 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1 If you just do that, then the SSL certificate doesn't work in dovecot (it will work fine in Apache, or Postfix etc etc). You also need the certificate to be valide for client side work: [ client_and_server_ca_extensions ] basicConstraints = CA:false keyUsage = digitalSignature, keyEncipherment extendedKeyUsage = 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2, 1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1 I believe this is a fault with Dovecot. This is with the Debian package for Dovecot 1.2.11 (Version: 1:1.2.11-1). The default self-signed certificate the Debian post-install script generates pops out a certificate that is valid for everything, which is why it works by default out of the box. Matthew
